Don't blame yourself, Matt. You're right that any company advertising certification under obsolete criteria needs to make that fact extremely clear. In any case, the previous data is still useful. Also, nice to hear the RPK mentioned, and yes, they do exist, even in the US civilian market, although they're all either kit builds or rare and collectable (e.g. FIME FM-RPK74-33). RPK-style rifles in 7.62x39 are much more common in the US, with the AES-10B being a reasonable facsimile of the Russian RPK, and much more affordable than imports like the FM-RPK47-33.

Hence why the NIJ implemented this. I would have to read other standards to see if they account for this.
@ninjagold9244Ай бұрын
Yeah, how can a plate be "multi-hit rated" if a mere drop compromises the integrity, let alone stopping an entire round? I think there is a serious QC/inconsistency in the manufacturing, and they are trying to blame the drop test.
@Dark_Heart5580Ай бұрын
@ninjagold9244 You do realize these plates were originally designed before drop testing standards were implemented with the NIJ right? And the overrun plates are plates that the Ukranians ordered that were produced to those same pre drop test specs. High energy small impact is going to only compromise the area around the hit. A drop test is moderate energy impact but spread across an entire surface so it makes sense that a drop test would compromise an entire plate rather that a single hit compromising it.
@ninjagold9244Ай бұрын
@@Dark_Heart5580 So the plate material is weak enough that an impact on a fist-sized portion will propagate across the rest of the material, but a bullet strike will be contained? That doesn't make sense to me.
@Dark_Heart5580Ай бұрын
@@ninjagold9244 Its not a fist sized area tho. Its quite a bit larger. But either way, a larger area being struck means more areas that can have a micro crack or will have that additional stress put onto it that may weaken the material. A tiny impact from a bullet means less area that will be affected. The bullet impact effects a much smaller area than the drop onto face would. Its like if i took a screw driver and hit a wall. The screwdriver would probably go through the drywall but only put a hole in it. If I instead hit it with a sledge hammer its going to also put a hole in it but there will be noticeable cracks and damage to the surrounding wall.

We always remained upright and treated our plates as if they were made of glass. That's absolutely a realistic test.......ARE YOU F***IN KIDDING ME? How much are these and they can't be dropped at all? Our issued plates in '07 sometimes took multiple heavy blunt strikes a day and of the 4 guys at my FOB that took rounds, none of their plates failed. I don’t necessarily agree. I haven’t watched the new video yet, but from what I know now they passed to the standard they were rated at, nothing more and nothing less. I do believe they should publicly release the name of the foam or structural mesh they use for the face protection like Buffman did. But, I do not believe the company owes every one of the tens of thousands of people who bought a set of cheap ass nigh obsolete plates for $100, a $25 pad for them. The buyers of this below bargain bin price plate should use the hundreds of dollars they saved and buy their own pads for their own plates like you do with everything else. Highcom does something great for us. They do bridge the gap between threat capabilities, weight savings, and budget. And they would lose hundreds of thousands of dollars to send a bunch of cheap asses their padding because they think they bought a plate that is worthless since they can’t Bautista Bomb their homies in it and then stop high caliber AP rounds. Especially when those cheap asses bought their plates off a shady ass website and Highcom got MAYBE $25 bucks per plate out of it on a wholesale price. I don’t care about their $99 plate and I don’t give a shit who thinks they owe what. The plate does what it’s supposed to, period. I want them to keep doing what they are doing, making high quality, lightweight, high rating, inexpensive plates. And they can’t keep making great plates for a good price if they have to go and send every fudd who jumped on a goofy website and bought the absolute cheapest plates they could get their hands on a pad. That’s dumb. If you can’t afford a pad for your plate you have a long life ahead of you in the preparedness and military readiness department. $25 bucks and a $99 plate is about a 10th of what you’ll spend on a decent rifle. Bunch of fuckers running around in condor plate carriers if they can’t afford their own pad and a nicer plate.

If this testing tells us anything, it's that NIJ .06 and the new .07 standards should be a hard and fast rule for those purchasing armor. Compromising to a lower .04 standard just means you're giving away plate capability. These are the kinds of plates that propagate the FuddLore about ceramic armor being useless if dropped and can't take multiple hits. This really says a lot about the offerings from HighCom, much to the chagrin of certain armor dealers in the world. It should be further noted that HighCom only has ONE level 4 plate on the CPL currently, and it's not this plate. This further goes to show the issues of not having plates validated by the NIJ that aren't otherwise Military issue plates.

What's with the deletion of the old video? Seems to me like these plates absolutely shit the bed if they're dropped before ballistics testing. Seems like it's kind of dishonest to call a plate Level IV if they're bumped around or if you don't have a backer. Approaching the manufacturer first when plates don't live up to their advertised protection only gives the manufacturer another chance to manipulate the results. The consumer should see the results first in the interest of transparency. You have *your own* testing standards, do you really want the manufacturer to tell you that you're doing your own test wrong? The typical consumer doesn't get a chance to test or a second chance when they are buying life saving products and the product doesn't hold up to it's claims.

The original dropped plate failed to stop M2AP COM at the NIJ spec. it stopped a slew of other rounds as it did here, but because of the 3 M2AP hits on that plate, it degraded it enough that the plate then only stopped 6 out of 10 5.56 threats. In reality that's way more hits then the plate was meant for considering it was designed for 1 M2AP hit. The original video is in the description.

7n6 isnt really used in the Russian army anymore. They have switched to 7n22 and 7n24. Both have significantly higher penetration and speed

Unfortunately I have no access to those rounds. I don’t see them doing any better than M995 though as even with better cores than 7N6 5.45’s pressure cap is still 10k psi lower than 5.55

Nobody tried to discredit anything. Just showed that the armor worked as per it's 04/05 cert. I would think it would be good of this clown to test something his company sold after the original video raised questions. Glad this video put those questions to bed.

@@tjkirgin The frack he didn't. He literally called Buffman's testing flawed 3 times, then proceeded to set a plate on a stack of tires, walked approx 45ft away and center massed it out of a 17inch AR. With zero chrono, and closest we got to the ammo specs were "these are green tips"

Another amazing informative vid for free 👍 Hey Buffman i know its probably not your area of expertise but i wanted to spread an idea i had and get different perspectives Here it is. Tungsten carbide rods can be bought online and sharpened/cut with small dimond saws and dimond files. My idea for the future is 3d printed bullet jackets (not sabots) for sharpened tungsten carbide rods (not unlike the shape from that AP incendiary), think of the 3d jackets as easter egg shells snapping together around the rods of a particular length & shape (although its more complicated then that). I've seen 3d bullets be shot out of guns a few different ways on youtube and i think they could hold together as long as they arent put through hight twist rate barrels like 8.6 blk. The tests ive seen also havent used the strongest 3d printing filiments which would increase the chance for success. If its possable people could make and reload their own AP ammo comparable to m995 & m993 along with other interesting rounds like subsonic 338 spectre or 300 blk or ap 9mm
@BuffRANGEАй бұрын
That would be interesting if those tungsten carbide rods are of a composition that is beneficial to armor penetration.

By the books these are level IV. They stopped the NIJ 04/06 shot pattern; one single hit of M2AP. There is no requirement to stop lesser threats or anything else with level IV. I think ultimately that’s a major downside of not creating a new RF4 or even 5 rating. They allow certification now up to 6 shots but in the end it’s still an R3 plate per the CPL.

What's the most economical and easiest rifle and round to obtain in the usa (overseas?) and defeat level 4 plates on the first shot? I'm guessing the cheapest .50 bmg rifle with ball ammo. Anyone else agree?
@BuffRANGEАй бұрын
At what distance? Truthfully it's going to be 50 BMG. There's varying levels of construction and materials on hard armor, that make it a total roll of the dice to be able to do it on the first shot.
@blackberet9997Ай бұрын
Probably not even ball ammo, you'd need .50 BMG AP or similar to consistently penetrate level 4 (or european equivalent) at most ranges. High quality level 4 is tough as hell.
@jb7483Ай бұрын
@BuffRANGE 1 50 bmg from an m2 browning or m81 Barrett, it will defeat level 4 armor, lol. If it doesn't, which I have never seen a level 4 stop, blunt force trauma is a real thing, and you are dead either way. With just ball and tracers, we shredded through a bmp within 50m to 100m in Bosnia. So I truly doubt it's even a dice roll, more like an act of G-d.
