I hate this penalty in general, it's literally based on how the ref feels that current day. You see players and coaches giving it to the refs damn near every game, especially when they get called on penalties, yet hardly any ref calls "abuse of officials" unless there's a physical altercation. It's a call that varies from ref to ref and they can call it whenever they dislike a player or dislike a team.

That's correct. If a player or team continually over time bitches at refs about everything and makes themselves unlikable, they put the bullseye on their own back.

None of us know what was said, because Jomboy hasn't told us; however I do wish it was called this seriously more often in the NHL for words none of of us ever hear. The reason I say that is because what happens in youth hockey will never get the same level of international attention, I once had a coach tell me I (as a 16 year old) should make sure I get to my car before he got to me in the parking lot during a 10U club game. If words are punished harshly at the NHL level for abuse of officials, I think we would see it a lot less of it at the the lower, especially youth, levels.

These announcers are absolute clowns. These kind of interactions where players are upset and lose respect for the game, their teammates (2 minute penalty, 10 minute misconduct and a game), the referees and their self-respect is far too common. It’s this kind of abuse that refs take on a consistent basis from players that gets normalized and that co-signs parents losing their shit on their kids coaches and amateur referees. That being said, it just feels like there’s nothing we can do on an individual basis. It’s just disappointing to see it continue to poison a game that means so much to people.
@jacoblamb3535Ай бұрын
You are wrong. This is the highest level of simulated war, sport. That’s what you’re watching. Nothing verbal should ever be a penalty. Respect for referees is for people not playing pro.
@drewcohen8237Ай бұрын
Agree, Sheldon. I played growing up and refereed (don't do either anymore after I graduated college). We'd lose around a third of the referees we'd gain every year because of abuse. It is so normalized and trickles down from the highest level, same with other sports. In few other context would it be appropriate to vituperously verbally abuse someone, but in a sports context, it somehow has become a tradition of deviance. Hope there can be change, but the outlook seems pretty bleak.

Appreciate your opinion and contribution to the discussion. I also used to referee and lines. Was one of my first jobs as a teenager. Pretty sweat gig at first; 20$ an hour, more time on the ice and got to help protect the sanctity/fairness of the game. That is until an incident in a playoff game where a coach from a AA Bantam team tried to assault the lead ref, myself as the linesman and my co-linesman (both 16 yoa) as he “disagreed” with the call the ref made. The chaos that ensued led to a tribunal for the parent/coach with him being barred for life from coaching and charged with assaulting two kids. Needless to say both myself and my peer quit referring shortly thereafter. I am hopeful that something changes, right? It has too. I feel like the mandatory conduct courses parents have to take in Ontario are a good start. We just need the leagues to step up and make the necessary adjustments to demystify the process of discipline and make the rules of conduct consistent and transparently clear.
