wonderfully discussed about a delicate issue...so appreciate your frankness...would that we would all just be aware of each others needs....

This was my biggest fear before my first Camino. My first few days I didn’t eat and drink enough because I was worried about it. I eventually figured out the right balance and have always been able to time stops at bars to use a restroom. In two Caminos I have never had to use nature’s toilet.

Grew up camping in the Pacific Northwest. Expert peeing in the woods, my sister could never get the hang of it, always peed on herself. Feet wide, squat low and bit of slope helps. Definitely get out and practice. We always have a tree up here, so open spaces are a new experience. Thanks for opening the discussion.

This might be evidence that I'm malnourished/dehydrated while hiking, but personally I found that I was going through the bathroom less often than usual throughout the day.

Using a P-Style lets you pee without taking down your pants. You can just turn away from the trail. Think about when it is raining. Wearing a poncho and your back pack, you don't need to squat down or anything like that. Also useful for those less then clean toilets or the ones with no seats. Bandana squares work for me, but a Kula cloth is pretty popular. I saw a lot of them on my last 2 Caminos. Just wash the squares with my hand laundry. Almost 500,000 pilgrims walked last year and 50% of them were women. Think about all those plastic bags we can save by not using TP and baggies.

Great topic on an important issue. My wife has “stomach issues” and is a veteran at outdoor “toileting.” We were shocked, however, at the amount of toilet paper left behind in all the places just off the trail that lend themselves to being that stopping spot. It was disgusting in places. If you have to “#2” outside, you really should have a trowel and dig a “cat hole” and bury your business - but put the toilet paper in a ziplock bag and dispose of later. So yea, the ziplock bag advice is excellent, as is the rest of your suggestions. Buen Camino.

Ich habe immer Desinfektionsspray dabei und benutze es vor dem hinsetzen. Ich verlasse die Toilette immer sauberer, als ich sie vorgefunden habe. Wenn das jeder macht, gibt es kein Problem.😂
