The spooky story from the guy in Celadon plays on the name of Curse itself: In Japanese, the words for “curse” and “slow” sound the same (のろい “noroi”), so ghost-types use the “curse” meaning and all others use the “slow” meaning. They couldn’t translate the pun into English obviously, so the humor of the story of a kid thinking their bike was *slowing* because it was *cursed* kinda got lost.

I still believe that Aerodactyl is Charizard's ancestor They both have two little horns at the back of the skull, bat wings, long neck/big head/big mouth, they are around the same size, too. That's a lot in common One fossilized and became rock, the other kept evolving and became fire

I really like your personal stories about playing Pokémon when you were younger. :) They remind me of my own experience I had with Gen 1 and 2. Especially your story about not being able to read ... For example: I remember playing Pokémon Yellow when I was 10 years old and since I'm from Germany, I had ... well, a german copy, of course. But there was the trainer class called "Teenager" and since it's an english word I never heard before, I always read "Tee-Nager", which means something like "tea gnawer" or "tea rodent" in German. I imagined that these trainers liked to gnaw on their tea cups, which didn't make sense, but I didn't know better and just took it as a fact... xD Anyway, thanks for redeeming Aerodactyl! I love that aggressive looking Rock Bird! Your videos are lot of fun!

I also started learning math without realizing it as I saw damage numbers. I also remember i liked magic damaging spells, so I think I started learning those too. At least, it logically would make sense as I don't see why I'd have wizards in my party if I didn't know how to use their spells.

27:08 the #1 getting lost for me was the Magma Hideout in Emerald. You arrive in Lilicove, try to go east, nope. So you find the aqua hideout... but the grunts are blocking the stairs. How was I expected to remember that single Magma grunt half of the game ago on the other side of the map that was standing near a wall? That section has a lot of potential to get lost too, I still sometimes forget that you also have to go to Mount Pyre and the order you're supposed to do these 3. There's a couple of spots like that in Hoenn when you have to backtrack without a good hint where, but that Lilycove debacle is the only one that kept annoying me even in the later playthroughs when I was a teen and could read some English.

I felt that Slowpoke Well anecdote on such a personal level! When my brother and I were little, our mother found two Gameboys, Pokemon Yellow, Gold, and Silver, and Pokemon Pinball at a car-boot market. We were so excited to finally have the games after watching so much of the cartoon, but we had no idea how to play them. The thing is, we didn't know how to leave the house. It didn't click that the doormat was an exit to the room so we thought the games were broken. We were trapped. Disappointed and angry, we ended up just watching the opening cutscenes or playing Pinball. One afternoon I discovered that walking into a wall makes a funny thud noise. I started walking into every spot on the walls until eventually I stumbled out the front door and our lives changed forever.

Instead the leader ran away ... and for some reason I have missed the point that she left for the cave behind the gym. This led to a young boy very confused running all around the whole region to find the gym leader. It took me the better part of a week to find that one cave. Yesterday, during your Gastly stream you and Matt were talking about the Ditto runs that Matt and Jrose have done. If you decide to do one, I recommend you watch Jrose's video first. He found a very helpful glitch. When transformed, if you level up mid fight, you'll get Ditto's stats back. That could be helpful should you go up against someone who uses a bad Pokemon to start with. The won't help with trainers like Surge, since he only has one Pokemon in Yellow. I don't know how helpful that will be in the endgame, but in the early and mid game, it should be pretty handy. I have no idea if the glitch works in gen 2 and beyond though. As far as I know, it's only a gen 1 thing

It's really interesting to hear all your johto stories, especially your experience with the E4, since my experience was the exact opposite. When I were a kid I wanted ALL the pokémon. I didn't have a favorite team of 6, I had a huge roster of pokémon which I switched between as-needed, and I spent hours grinding to keep as many of my pokémon at a decent enough level, so that none would fall too much behind in case I would need them on my team in the future. The result was that I had lots and lots of pretty under-leveled pokémon. This was felt HARD in the sudden level-jump between Jasmine and her lvl 35 Steelix, and then Clair and her lvl 40 Kingdra, and then the whole E4 + champion with lvl 40-50. I had managed to make it as far as I had because most of the time I simply had more pokémon on my team than what the opponent had, but when I came to the E4, which suddenly all had 5+ pokémon, which was all at equal or higher level than my highest leveled pokémon, the E4 was this seemingly impossibly difficult wall for me. when I first faced will, he simply sweeped me. Most of my team was simply outsped and one-shot by his Xatu using Psychic. It took me like 2-3 of my team to chip-down his lead, and then his next pokémon would just keep using psychic to do SO MUCH DAMAGE.. After tons of grinding in Victory Road I finally managed to just barely beat Will. It was at this point I learned that you can't go back and heal and then take on the next trainer, how I'd managed to get through hard parts previously, but that I had to beat several fully stacked elite trainers in a row! It was at this point in the game that I learned that maybe buying potions to heal and restore your party between battles was a good idea (previously my thinking was: "Why waste money on potions when healing at the centers are free") It took me so much grinding training, and my whole bank of money spent on buying potions and Full Heals to finally beat the pokémon league, but the moment was absolutely magical, as it was the first pokémon game I ever actually beat

28:02 - I was one of the unfortunate ones who, as a kid, did not have the brain functionality to figure out sliding puzzles like in Ice Path. So, as a result, I would remain in the areas prior to Ice Path and powerlevel my Meganium, thinking that the levels of the Elite Four were consistent with Generation 1, where they would be in the level 50s, early 60s. In the end, I got a friend to solve the puzzle for me and I steamrolled the Elite Four with my level 64 Meganium. I figured out that puzzle, and the new puzzle in Crystal, in subsequent playthroughs. And it was this experience that prompted me to make two video guides on my channel on how to complete the Ice Path puzzle; one for Gold and Silver and one for Crystal from the entrance all the way to the exit. And those two videos still - to this day - get a lot of comments from people who also could not - or even still cannot - complete that puzzle without help. The Crystal video, judging by one of the comments, was used to help guide TwitchPlaysPokemon when they did Pokemon Crystal.

And, with a similar method right in the beggining of the game (silver/gold) you could have all of the starters. 1- Save inside your room right when you start. 2- play the game normally till you can catch a pokemon. 3- do the clone technique WITHOUT SAVING BEFORE THE PC by boxing your starter 4- when you turn on the game and continue, your save starts in your bedroom. but when you check the pc you have the starter pokemon you had boxed before in there.

Yeah, that is an awesome use of the glitch.

Good video again for the fossils. And the little animations for the pokemon on the side are good too. Aerodactyl seems happy that it's doing well in his battles when he wins and determined to win while battling. The anecdotes were really nice too. I like hearing people's stories with pokemon. The Johto Region as a whole is very special to me and my favorite region because it's the region that I started pokemon in. When I was a little kid my parents got me a Gameboy Advanced and Pokemon Crystal for finishing my summer homework. My first ever pokemon was a Cyndaquil since my father helped me set up the game. I still have the original cartrage too for Crystal, just need to change the battery inside if I want to play it but I got it on the 3ds for Virtual Boy. Cyndaquil, Quilava, and Typhlosion have been my favorite starter line for years and I love when I get the chance to have one along for the ride. I even have two Cyndaquil plushies for myself. One of them is a normal plush that you would get. It's one of the plushies that came with the plush poke ball, in Cyndaquil's case I think it was the repeat ball. The other one I have is one that I bought myself at a convention. This one is a hand crocheted Cyndaquil. It's really special to me since I don't normally get hand-made plushies for myself. I just wanted to get the little guy though since it was my first pokemon ever. Long story not so short, Johto is like a second home to me in the pokemon series. Please keep up the good work.

I’ve played every generation released up until the 6th and onward multiple times, like actually played them all the way through countless times since I was a kid and the only shiny I have ever found was a few days ago During a catch chain in let’s go eevee and I was stoked until googling it and realizing chains increase your chances lmao Your content is such a pleasantry man. Please keep up the good work ❤

I feel your pain! At age 7, playing Pokemon Blue on the OG game boy, I had no idea that that squiggle in the top right corner of your bedroom were stairs!! I wandered around that bedroom for at least half an hour, trying to play the snes, thinking that would launch the game. Good, poor pixel'd, times

Man I remember finding a shiny wild donphan as a kid. Unfortunately it rollouted my entire team of legendary birds when I tried over 50 ultra balls and failed to catch it. I told my brother about it and he called me a liar, and that only Gyarados could be red (shiny donphan in silver was red so I called it a red donphan). It wasn’t until he fished up a shiny poliwag about 2 months later that he did eventually believe my story. Ah the days of heresay and rumours.

I loved all the Silver/Crystal stories :D Extremely cute. And your poor mum, having the differences between Crystal and Silver explained to her 😂

I still have that red pokemon handbook! I read it at night sometimes with my son for bedtime. Also, I can empathize so much with the nostalgic stories. My rental game experience was pokemon stadium 1 and 2, I also recently bought copies.

I don't think you're getting unlucky on Omniboosts, I've never seen it activate on a hit that knocks out a Pokemon in Gen 2, Stadium 2 included.

It’s okay Scott. I couldn’t figure out how to get the item behind the fence where the bug catching tournament happens. That one small space you can walk through was so stupid.

I played Pokémon yellow as a kid and I remember once when I got stuck in sea foam island, I thought I was softlocked and so restarted my save. Years later I remembered that story and realized I could have at least fainted all my Pokémon to go back to a poke center…thanks for sharing your memories!

How do you get softlocked there?

I remember not realizing that the red Gyarados was a shiny when I caught it as a kid. Thought it was simply just that, a red Gyarados and it was kinda explained at some point, it was red because the magikarp was evolved too quickly and under force, so it was red. That was, until I caught my first shiny pokemon in the wild, a golden ratata in front of pallet town. This was in my silver edition. I called her Serenity and cherished her a lot, even though she was just a ratata. Love hearing your stories alongside these wonderful challenges that really highlight different pokemon!

I feel you dude. Pokemon crystal was my first game in the series, and at the time i got the game i don't even think i could fully read and/or write my native tongue, so english was a no go. the game became more about trial and error than strategy, and who even knew what STAB and type effectiveness was. at school we had this ritual where everybody would use Fury Cutter against the rivals gastly after the 2nd gym, because it was the only move we knew that would hit it, and we did it religiously because we thought that it was the best solution even if our starters had water gun/ember. while i did manage to find fly, i never got to experience the post game fully in my crystal game because i couldn't do the power plant quest. there was only 1 guy who had managed to get past it and he didn't remember what he did to progress the quest so the rest of us were stuck lol. Oh also that reminds me that there was also only one guy who knew the path to Lugia, and he was a bully in school so it was a coinflip if he'd help you or kick your ass. Also i killed suicune by mistake lol. forgot to save before engaging it, and had no pokeballs. however, Raikou is my fav of the three beasts, and zapdos is my fav bird. well this was a real blurb but honestly they are all good memories. edit: wow i just remembered my first league win. i was down to my starter (feraligatr) and lance was down to his aerodactyl. feraligatr was hurt badly from the dragonites and only had 1 move left, which was water gun. mind you i didn't know aerodactyls typing at the time, and as mentioned above i had no idea what STAB or supereffective moves were. i land the water gun and it either one or two shots it, and im just vibrating with excitement and joy while screaming at the top of my lungs. the next time i'd feel something close to the same was in gen 3 when capturing Rayquaza.

As a kid with pokémon yellow as my first game, I spent so much time talking to everyone. I remembered getting it in kindergarten. I don't remember how I got silver, but I spent so much time playing it. I always thought after you go through the Kanto gym leaders, you had to take on the Elite 4 a second time before you could fight Red. I remember the excitement, the wonder, exploring every little corner. Having the item finder, and using it everywhere, just to find every single item.

And Aerodactyl's drawing on the left apparently used Double Team during Whitney's battle. 21:40-21:51 I think you would like Crystal Clear because Swinub becomes the "mascot" of the game. Have you ever played either of the Pokemon Stadium games on N64?

There's a bit in final fantasy seven that had me stuck for weeks for a similar reason. You have to walk up a ladder, but it doesn't look like a ladder. It looks like it's just part of the background.
