Hello everyone. My interview with endocrinologist Dr, Janet Rubin on how to discontinue Prolia. We really appreciate all the support you provide by watching the videos and for your kind comments. We wish we had the time to respond to them all. Stay safe, stay active and keep well.

I took one shot of Prolia for my shin splints. I’m a healthy, physically active 59yo male (marathons and triathlons). Currently taking Vit D3 and Calcium daily. At least two orthopedic surgeons recommended Prolia after MRI showed a few micro fractures on my tibia. Both surgeons suggested either 1 or 2 doses only (6 months apart). Your thoughts please, on the risks of rebound effects e.g. fractures. Thank you.

PLEASE add subtitles in Spanish - so many people in South America are suffering because this drug is extremely expensive, sometimes the insurance companies do not continue giving the drug which makes people stop it. d we already know what happens if stopped with no plan. There's no information online in other languages.

My wife, a dance instructor, was diagnosed with osteoporosis and her doctor prescribed Prolia injection in the stomach. It changed her life. She has become almost helpless. Constant severe bone pain all the time, day & night. She has almost lost the use of her right hand, I have to help her dress, wipe her down after a shower, and cut up the food for her on her dinner plate. I wish I could sue the firm that makes this stuff.

I only took one Prolix shot and I could not walk or get up from a chair without help. Before the shot I was walking about 2 miles a day and after the shot it took about 6-8 weeks before I could walk a short distance. Only through pure grit was I able to walk normally without sitting down every few feet. I regret taking the Prolix shot and will not take any more.

I am so sorry 😢 Bless you for sharing. What the heck did the prescribing MD have to say about this ? 👉 Please demand this MD to Report this adverse affect. ... did you know that MDs are not even required to report the adverse affects. In the comments once a patient said how the doctor scoffed at the pile of paperwork he'd have to fill out from the pharmaceutical company... If the doctor does not, you can submit what happened to the National adverse Effects Drug database. Sorry I do not have the exact name... I at 62 take nothing ... Please let your darling wife know we are thinking of her.

I've been on it for several years and had the bone pain initially but pushed through it and have had some great success. I don't dance but I hike several miles 3-4 times a week and I row in a single scull with a group of older women with chronic illnesses 2-3 times a week from Spring-Fall. I'm sorry this happened to your wife, but for some of us, this drug has been wonderful. @@cryals4714

Yeah don't do it. My aunt was the same. Six months after is the risky time for going off it... my mom reversed her osteopenia with diet and excercise taking vitmin k2 of 45 milligrams not micrograms. And taking various herbs and minerals none of whcih were calcium. She is in her 80s and also reversed her type 2 diabetes. I am very proud of her. She got lucky and got a diabetes nurse who was ayurveda trained in India and supported her. Her doctors were very unhelpful and she had to go private to get the She needed as her doctors didn't support her choices to go off medications. Anyway if she can do it then it's possible. I'm aunt has been taking proliia I've given her raw cacao which helps if you take ut twice a day to procure stem cells which I figure must be a good thing and vitimin k..unfortunately she does not take advice very well or follow any diets whras my mom is very into a positive frame of mind that her body cna heal. My aunt is very stubborn and didn't listen to this video so she just tstopped taking it without a plan and six months later she seems to have a slight hip bone bruise and has some vertebral collapse fractures. I tried to help and inform her but she just doesn't have any interest in helping herself. So what can I do. Her sister my mom has tried too. But the diet and excercise and positively taking your health into your own hands seems to really work. My mom also reversed her high blood pressure too and basically off all her keds except for an emergency insulin needle she keeps in the fridge just in case. Good luck have faith and positivity and I am confident that doing that can really help a lot.

The difference between exercise and drugs: Exercise has measurable benefits and no harms. Drugs have some benefits and some harms. It's alarming that removal of the Prolia drug results in harms that did not exist before taking it.

It's bizzare that you're not meant to take it for more than two years or something but there's no way to safely stop taking it?? Same with antidepressants you're only meant to take them for two years but once you take them coming off them can cause worse issues than you started with. When such lack of common sense and safety and indeed informing patients of any of this...its very hard to think they have our best interests at heart at all. I kept going to my doctor about an ear problem...I got handed lexiprp for anxiety cos the doctor made me very anxious cos I had such ear pain and dizziness and itching I could hardly sleep and the doctors made me afraid ...cos they'd given me a banned drug already...she hands me lexipro which I knew had side effects and asked her what re the side effects she said there are none and I should read about it because it would make me have more anxiety. Lexipro isn't even for anxiety apsrently ...like wtf?

It also seems very counterproductive that a drug that was created to help your bones can quite possibly compromise your teeth. It also it doesn't seem a good thing that if you stop, you can have rebound fractures. Doctors used to follow, "First do no harm." That now seems to be out the window. Unfortunately, I've been on it almost 7 years. My new endo recommended reclast. I'm terrified of the idea I could be in worse pain than I'm already in. I feel stuck and just may continue prolia. No one explained I would have to relay to a biphosohanate. I was told tumlos/forteo.

I believe until more research is done or doctors have a much better understanding of these drugs then they shouldn't push then to the intensity they do. They fearmonger patients into making these choices.

Prolia and then, subsequently Actinel nearly crippled me! after the two injections th doctor said I needed. I could feel my entire skeleton ( but especially in my thighs and hips) almost feel hot. I would walk around and was conscious of every step I took. I would not have had a third shot as I believe I would have been crippled.My GP realised I had had a bad reaction. The doctor then swapped me to weekly Actinel and after about three weeks the same thing happened. I joined Save our bones institute, ditched all these meds. I take D3 + K2mk 7, Vit D3 extra 1000mg, magnesium, selenium, zinc, Co Enzyme Q10, vit C and collagen. I swapped being vegan for low carb, high fat vegetarian diet and eat vintage cheese, Greek yoghurt and open range eggs plus avocado. Reversed a fatty liver, lost abdominal fat. Ghee and Extra virgin olive oil for cooking and meals.I Exercise in the pool with hand weights, plus weights twice weekly and walking/run as I always have. My bone density has improved as has my skin. I would not care if the density had stayed the same there is NO way I would poison myself again and suffer terrible pain with these medications. I shall take my chances with thinner more supple bones than dry, brittle, painful bones.

Nice my mom in her 80s reversed her diabetes with similar strategy to you she refused drugs she also reversed her high BP and her type 2 diabetes ...she still has bad kidneys but her kidneys have stayed at a level of stage 4 from stave 5 at one point. My aunt on the other hand had menopause at 35 didn't take hrt took proolia wouldn't take any advice to get any excercise or change her diet took phosamac and the other one actinel and bisph9sphenates and back to prolia which she went off six months ago didn't look at any of these videos or take any advice for having a plan to come off it now she's got hip pain and agony all day long. All I can do is tell her where the water is. I cant makes her drink it. She eats very badly and its sad but also the choices we make for our taste buds over our bodies needs is a choice that won't end well. It might be pleasant to eat all the nice sugary foods but in the long run the vegetables and things are what e need. She also is afraid to eat any fat cos she has high cholesterol. Sigh. I send her videos but she doesn't watch them

Before my mama passed away, she took at least 3 injections of Prolia. Eventually she developed hip pain that couldn’t be explained. It was debilitating and we went from doctor to doctor, not understanding this could well be a side effect. At the same time, she was declining from vascular dementia. We had stopped the Prolia. She ended up in inpatient hospice care on morphine from the pain. She would grab at our clothes and beg us to help her with the pain. She lived about 2.5 more weeks.

Thank you so much for this. Last year, at 62, a bone density scan showed that I have osteoporosis ( neck of L femur) and osteoporosis lumbar spine and both hips. I am healthy, I exercise , I take vit d and k , I eat well. I am not overweight, I bought ( and use) your book exercise for better bones . My dr put me on a weekly biphosphonate but I couldn’t tolerate it. She then started me on Prolia. I did my research ( after my first shot) and have not had another. I have decided to continue on my healthy regime rather than take the Prolia at this stage. (I have also had a total L knee replacement and am having my R knee later replaced this year - old meniscus surgeries). Exercise is the medicine of choice at my age. Thank you! ( From Australia)

@Marina Harris, you can’t just stop Prolia, you could get rebound fractures. Prolia stores dead bone cells and when you stop taking it, the dead bone cells leave your body at a rapid rate. Then the chance of fractures is very high. Sounds like you have a high chance of ending up in The Prolia trap.

@@marinaharris4880 Also it’s a good idea to get your parathyroid checked. You should get that checked at the same time as your calcium and vitamin D levels. The test should be done early in the morning in the same blood draw, as you will get the correct result then. Best of luck with your osteoporosis. I’m also only using diet and exercise for my osteoporosis, I saw what happened to my Dad and Aunts when they took osteoporosis drugs, many fractures in their spines.

I had one infusion of a biphosphinate and had a severe reaction. I was told not to have it again. 5 years later i have gone through a bad distal fracture of my wrist, 6 mos later an incomplete fracture of my forearm., same arm. Two years ago i developed a fracture in my top jaw which developed an infection. It was not until then was i asked if i had ever had a biphosphanate drug for osteo. This dental specialist did a root canal and advised me of this issue. Surprised? Oh YES! AND WHY had i not been advised of this issue??? Since only having that one infusion i have been adament to di this on my own i guess. Every doctor i have seen has strongly encouraged me to go back on these drugs for ny osteo. I carry items up and down my stairs, do other heavy lifting doing yard work, walk stairs, take Vit D3 and have that and a bone density every year...on my dime until i met Medicare age. If my doctors who are trying to get me to take these meds and claim they did not know of this problem, but an endodontist does what does this say to us elderly patients?

My doctor (Nurse Practitioner) tried for years to get me to take Prolia. I refused. Finally, I was coerced into getting one injection. She was aware of the fact that I am highly sensitive to a lot of medications. Nonetheless, She did not tell me about the black box warning nor examine my mouth as instructed in the black box warning. When I refused to get a second injection, she became angry and argumentative, then stormed out of the room,. I had one injection two years ago and immediately suffered every reaction mentioned in the warning. My implants and crowns fell out, my right jaw twisted to the right with severe pain in the every bone in aches as well as my muscles. I have difficulty walking or exercising, My weight dropped from a healthy 115 to 93 pounds. I can see my rib cage. My nipples inverted and breasts dropped to below my rib cage. My skin looks like it is falling off of my bones and it looks like crepe paper.. This drug should be taken off the market. It is a death sentence!!!! The doctors that recommend it should be sued and jailed.

Eye opening episode. Thank you for this information. Could you please suggest timing for when to stop Prolia: for a Very thin boned woman, Numerous fractures since childhood, diagnosed with osteoporosis at 52yrs old? Dr said numbers would be concerning in a 72yr old woman, but to have such bad numbers at 52 was almost unheard of. Insurance required Bisphosphonates to start but that caused problems with diverticulosis and stomach polyps. I've been taking Prolia 5yrs now.

I believe that I was dx just in the nick of time to do something about it without relying in medications so far. Since I am in my late 60s, I though my problems were the getting old theme. My testing and labs reported no OA at least not in my knees and hips, regardless how painful it had become to walk and raise my arm all of a sudden. My back has been injured from extremes of work and activity, but the scan cannot look good at your upper and even your lower back, drs just assume and visually assess. MRI can do a better job but still incomplete. My lumbar is stenotic that might have contributed to my right hip and knee issues, and my nursing job makes me sit for long hours. As I am typing this, two years after the dx of osteoporosis, I am feeling almost no discomfort, and I am pain free, just a little tick here and there and most of the time nothing. I am blessed that I have never have had fractures, but I have had a few traumatic falls. I read an article long time ago that if you were a very active child, free roaming (like me; kids today are not as active as kids from the last century) the quality of your bone stays with you regardless. So trusting that and my research (I am a nurse) helped me make my decision to go med free, at least for now. As a new partially retired, I am living day by day, but making sure I take care of my body to the best of my knowledge. Thank you for your work and the drs answers because it is my experience that many dr do only prescribe without providing the education and the facts. Mine never told me that once I accept the prolia, I had to stay on it for life, or the process to effectively discontinue it. I did not like the idea of a long life with the treatment, but I was willing to take it if I fell I really needed it. I had to do her job and do my own finding work.

Let's interview some ourselves...or email them...I emailed an entomologist about mosquitoes at Denial Bay in AU putting off prospective buyers of houses over looking the sea for example...turns out they're literally the TINY ones!!! There'd be a whole lot of academics I the field and practitioners who wouldn't mind a chat NOT the ones who write prescriptions necessarily.

an excellent and thoughtful interview. thank you. I'm turning 70 and my doctor is thinking prolia, but I do fear being on it for over ten years or the doctor retiring, etc. I think I should wait and try fosamax even though I think that 'eats' the stomach lining despite my best efforts to take it properly. I'm very healthy and active but old age is still encroaching on my body. I've been looking for answers about Prolia and I am so appreciative. I think it's a good drug, but too complicated to come off of should and when that becomes necessary. Unfortunately, my doctor hasn't really offered any answers about Prolia or making a plan for a 'holiday' or coming off or when to really think about starting it. Yes, you shed a LOT of light on this. thank you both!

This was a great video. I’m a 71 yo who has been on Prolia for 2 yrs. That was the plan with going on biphosphonates after. I have a lot of GI issues, including a giant hiatal hernia. So I’m reluctant to take the orals. Can you comment. What about the Iv doses. Would I be a candidate in your experience? Thanks for your help. I’ve already had a spontaneous spinal fracture prior to going on the Prolia. I’m an old 71 yo btw. I’m morbidly obese, don’t exercise and have multiple mobility issues and deformities.

Actually balance is a subtle thing and partly to do with eyes and brain and posture- core strength. Look at Margaret Martin videos. Very soothing. You might be quite surprised and excited.

I took 2 injections. The side effects were awful. I had to miss my third injection due to an invasive dental procedure. I was not put on anything else because of an extraction and bone graft. It’s a year since I had my last injection because my mouth is still healing. That’s the problem with these drugs, you can’t plan for emergency situations that may cause you to have to get off them for things like extensive dental work. My mother has had 2 injections of Prolia in the last year or so. I believe her last injection was about 4-5 months ago. Well, about 2 or 3 months ago she started having severe pain in her jaw, arms, legs, hips and neck. We started to eliminate all her supplements thinking it was one of them. The pain continued. She's seen a couple of doctors and they have done blood work and just tell her it's arthritis. But this pain came on suddenly and is crippling her. She said she feels like her body is cramping up like a Charlie horse. I then remembered that she is taking these shots and read about the side effects and one of them being bone/muscle/joint pain. I really think that is is the reason for her pain. How do I safely get her off this awful drug and get her back to feeling like her normal, healthy self again safely. She already takes vitamin D3/K2, magnesium and eats lots of calcium-rich foods. Before this pain, she was working out 5-6 days a week. She is almost 84 years old and takes no other medication except for those two Prolia injections.

Wonderful discussion! I am 74, had 11 Prolia injections. Actonel for a year before Prolia, Fosamax for 9 years before Actonel. I was diagnosed with an Atypical Femur (stress, not complete) Fracture in August. I was non-weight bearing for a while, so did PT to regain strength. I have officially stopped Prolia (due 10 days ago). My endo will start me on Actonel in January after he looks at bone markers to see what’s going on. Question: I have always been very active - taught ballet many years (still some now), I walk, I do Pilates (modified now), have started working with free weights - Is it recommended at this time (relaying off of Prolia) to back off of the exercise so as not to tempt the devil, so to speak? I am very worried about spontaneous spinal fractures. Thank you.

Depends on your situation - age, health and reason for the osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates increase bone density for most people but studies show the demensobub (Prolia) works faster. A further talk with the doctor would be best - if you don’t have to go on Prolia, don’t. You have to take it for the rest of your life otherwise you lose bone when you come off it if you don’t take a bisphosphonate. I’m pretty sure that bone resorption does not occur anywhere near the same rate as Prolia. The Mayo Clinic site has an interesting article on stopping pisphosphonates and suggests that if you’ve been on them 3 to 5 years, the effects appear to continue for several years, but that’s going to depend on a lot of factors, not the least of which is the reason for your bone loss in the first place. Best to talk with your doctor.

Went on 4000 d3 with K2 280 m7. Prolia for 2years did nothing for me. Calcium went to my mainairta instead of the bone. Doctor discover that because on Prolia I start getting worse. Through tests we saw my aorta was now 4,5 in a section which could cause bleeding and death. Yes I just went off Prolia. Last time my regular doctor had bone density done and it was better. This time they called me to come in as bone density got bad. I’m 83. Was on foxamax first before Prolia but it killed my stomach . I hate to say this but all these medications that are supposedly “build” bone only build inferior bone which actually can break, hence the warnings in commercials about the possibility of breaking your femur or hip, but yet most doctor keep pushing these drugs. I have osteoporosis and improved it, I refuse to take any of those meds, not only will they build inferior bone, but they also can cause jaw necrosis and other dental problems. My niece who is a pharmacist was on an oral bisphosphonate for 5 years and then was taken off it by her doctor, she had her hip replaced after that with the stipulation that she would have build good bone, however during her surgery her femur totally shattered with the ortho surgeon saying that she a had what they call a Bisphosphonate fracture! So in other words, her 5 year treatment was useless, she had a longer hospital stay, had screws and wires used to put her femur back together besides her hip joint replaced, besides that she had a compression fracture just recently. Also my sister-in-law has been talking this worthless stuff for 1 year and just had her 2nd compression fracture in her spine, so what’s the point taking this stuff, can anyone tell me that? So if you want to build good bone, do it naturally by doing weight baring exercises, eat a healthy diet, do not smoke and take your D3, K2, magnesium Glycinate and some researched algae based calcium, I actually improved my osteoporosis to osteopenia by doing that but I will NEVER EVER agree to take any Bisphosphonates, orally or thru infusion, not going to happen!

@@MariaKosmalovaI I am so sorry about your mom having such a terrible time with osteoporosis. I am German born and was raised there until I moved to the US. Yes I know of Silica, Boron and Strontium, I take a multi vitamin that has Boron in it, in the US most vitamins included it. I take a Calcium Supplement made from Algea, I get it from Amazon and one particular one I like and really works is called Vitamin Code Raw Calcium made by Garden of Life, it is a bit pricy but worth every penny, I really could tell the difference when I started taking it. I also take Vitamin D3 which is very important but I have my blood level checked at least ones per year, I have to take a lot of it (8,000 IU’s per day) because if I don’t my level goes down and it should be at least above 55 which mine now is, I have tried to take lower doses and my level went down right away each time. When I got diagnosed with osteoporosis years ago my level was at 28 which is very low and not good, I went to a Rheumatologist which are the doctors here in the US that specialize in osteoporosis and treat you for it, it was recommended to me to take a medication but I declined because of the possible side effects and besides that they really do not work and you are supposedly only be on those meds for no longer than 5 years.. I also take extra Magnesium, the one I take is chelated Magnesium, I alternate between brands so I don’t always take the same kind but the one I the the most is by Design For Health Magnesium Glycinate Complex and I also take extra Vitamin K2, anyone will do and I just fallow the directions on the back of all my supplements I take and all of them I get off of Amazon. When it comes to exercise I just walk at least 30 minutes every day, do stair stepping on a devise I got from Amazon called an Aerobic Step Deck, stepping up 20 times alternating between each leg with stepping up first with my left leg only for 20 and then my right leg 20. I then do it sideways the same way but you step compliantly over the deck and down the other side. I have some hand weights from 1 to 5 pounds that I use to do arm curls with (20 curls) and I also raise my arms above my head with 1 weight held with both hands, bending my arms at the elbow 20 times. I do wall push-ups by putting both of my hands on the wall spread apart a little, stepping back some with your feet, like several steps so that I am at an angle. I than lean forward towards the wall and push myself back again therefore doing push-ups, I do 20 of those. I hope this helps and I wish your mom all the best of health.

After reading up on it, I decided I'm not takiing it, especially because of the side affects and because my bone scans were lookiing better. He is a general practitioner. So what do you think of this? Seems like all the drugs these days may help, but cause so many other things with the side effects. I'm not taking Cholesterol medicines, because my neck got so stiff I could'nt even turn my head, it hurt so bad. He keeps trying to get me too take them.

I don't want to have another injection, I'm doing as much exercise (weight bearing). I've had spinal fusion from L1-L5 plus the medius/medius muscles on the right hip were torn. I had 2 failed surgeries to repair the muscles, the 2nd surgery the Surgeon used mesh which now has caused great irritation. I wonder if I'm now at risk. I worry about having foreign products. I am now 70 years old. My Dr. First put me on Fossamax in my 50’s, them Boniva for about 5 years. Both caused severe acid reflux. I was then put on Prolia almost 10 years ago. My insurance changed and because my deductible was high and I was never sick, I could not afford to pay $2000.00 a pop for a shot. I stopped the shots without any knowledge or concern from my family physician about 7 years ago. When I retired in 2020, I started walking a lot more than I had before retiring. I started having pain in my hip and groin and it got so bad that I went to a specialist in sports medicine thinking my hip was going out but to our surprise and only after an MRI found that I had two fractures in my pelvis. I had not fallen or done anything to my knowledge that would have caused this. I am wondering if going off the Prolia May have caused this. They put me back on Prolia and I have been taking the shots now since 2021. I have osteoporosis which is why I have been on the medications and then shots. My bone scans show improvement but I do have osteoporosis arthritis in both feet. Will taking Prolia make my arthritis worse? I have always been very active and do not want to become an invalid but have no idea what course of action to take having been on Prolia for as long as I have .

My last bone density remains normal. My mother had severe osteoporosis and suffered greatly for several years before she died. There are many positive aspects regarding pellet therapy. This therapy is not covered by insurance but due to medical necessity is covered under a FSA. My GP does not endorse pellet therapy citing possible risk of clotting. When you look at the dilemma for patients and treating doctors of how to manage osteoporosis, it is abundantly clear that MORE needs to be done about treatment. I’m sick of the medical approach to osteoporosis for aging women. The attitude is that it is inevitable (bone loss is but not necessarily to the point of osteoporosis) and we’ve got drugs to treat it. Yes, all the drugs do achieve bone growth, but they come with side effects that impact quality of life. If we took more steps to support women during peri-menopause period, we’d be better off. Hell … we shoul;d be ensuring all our girls are doing impact exercise/sport from the time they are little to help grow bone density in the first place and continue to maintain healthy bone less likely to fracture. For some, medication is critical given the extent of the condition and/or other health issues. This is a condition that falls perfectly into the “prevention is better than cure” because there is no cure and the consequences of fracture can be life altering.

@@mariamarino138 I’m sorry this has been your situation, Maria. It will be no comfort but so many women have similar stores. The medical profession KNOW osteoporosis can be prevented for most women and yet they do nothing until you have a fracture. Osteopenia can be reversed by non-medical treatments and osteoporosis can be prevented from getting worse if caught early. Your dexa score does show a worsening situation that has put you in a delicate situation. Doctors are not interested in older women. They rely only on “take the tablet” advice and now prescribe Prolia which has lifelong issues for the patient. I do hope you can make sense of the situation you are in and get some good advice on other things you can do to prevent falls and prevent fractures. If you haven’t had a fracture yet, that’s a good sign, but Margaret Martin is someone who does have exercise programs that assist people in fall prevention, developing balance and posture and exercising safely. I really wish you the best. I was totally depressed on my osteoporosis diagnosis but have been doing lots of things to try to prevent fractures and this has made me feel less depressed. You really have to be conscious of yourself now. Keep doing some research and see how the information sits with you. Margaret is a really sensible person who does understand osteoporosis so I’d be starting with her. Good luck. Be careful without locking yourself in a black box from the world. Someone like Margaret can give you advice on how to live safely but still live.

NEW INFORMATION: It isn't just bone density that is a part of the bone puzzle. This video, at minute # 25:24 explains that when strength training exercise occurs, bone DIAMETER increases which adds to stability of the bone. So while the density may not increase with strength training as much as with drugs, the drugs cannot increase the bone diameter. Think of trying to snap a small diameter piece of bamboo (which is hollow). Easy to do. But a wider diameter piece of bamboo is much more difficult, if not impossible, to snap despite also being hollow. This is what strength training can do for you. BMD is NOT the entire picture and doctors need to learn this new information. Here's the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWPalIOwo6mcnac

@magpiegirl3783
@magpiegirl3783 Жыл бұрын
A holiday in this context means the doctor wants to give your body a rest from the drug for a period of time. The extent of the rest depends on lots of factors, but with Prolia it would mean not having Prolia injections but taking one of the different forms of bisphosphonate drugs. Doctors will also suggest a drug holiday from bisphosphonates as well. A drug holiday does not mean you never take the drug again … the body is rested and then treatment resumes as per doctor determination.
