I think Venom got a lot of hate for not being Rated R and also not having Spider-Man as a part of his origin. Also compared to movies with a lot of hype like Black Panther, Wonder Woman, or Infinity War, I think critics didn’t care for it as much. It’s not a flawless movie but was better than the critics said it was.

I don’t think the critics are wrong, it just depends on what you’re looking for in a movie. If you’re looking for mindless entertainment, or just some fun, then Venom is good enough to please; but if you’re looking for a well-directed, well-written, and well-paced film, then maybe you won’t find it here. To me, it’s not completely terrible; I got what I expected, and it didn’t fail to deliver, unlike something like Fant4stic (Just typing the name makes me want to puke), which bombed with both fans and critics.

Saw it with friends last night and I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed the whole movie. The trailers didn't do it justice, IMO. I was only familiar with Venom from Spectacular Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3. Venom never seemed like a character to me, just some dark entity that ruins Eddie's life. Tom Hardy performed so well. I really hope we get to see more.

Spectacular SM is great and has a great Venom, but there both Eddie and the Simbionte looked like some sort of jealous friend and possessive ex-girlfriend trying to show off and bully Peter. This Venom looks away funnier(in the right tone for him) and way better on it's own.

I absolutely agree! I was surprised about how much I liked the movie after really hearing no good reviews. But regardless of the kind of bland look of the movie, I found it enjoyable and funny! I agree that the trailers didn't portray Venom as a proper character, and after seeing the movie I'm a bit dissapointed in that. I really liked the relationship that Venom and Eddie achieved during the movie

It's a lot like the old superhero movies, where the story is an afterthought and the real focus is showing off the hero doing cool stuff for 2 hours. The Sam Reimi Spider-Man movies are exactly that, people like those movies not for the plot or deep meanings, they like them because Spider-Man.

IVOLUKE I haven’t watched Venom yet so Idk how Hardy Venom is, but Topher Venom had a character, he lost his job, got humiliated in front of the entire city and anyone who bought Daily Bugle newspaper in that universe, he had the basic setup from the comics, to get revenge on Spider-Man and Peter Parker, the issue was that he never got any other development, on top of the awful casting, his character ended up rushed and killed off.

IVOLUKE Spiderman 3s Venom is an amalagmation of Eddies and the Symbiotes rage and hate towards Spiderman and Peter the character a big part of what Venom is and its more accurate than Venoms version, it was done way to quick thanks to Sony rushing the movie. This Venom doesn't make sense given the origins of the character, the Symbiote fuels on rage, changes the hosts personality yet Eddie is the same doofus throughout the entire movie.

He was done like the comics, except for making Brock one of the actors that auditioned for Peter Parker, instead of someone more like Hardy. I was expecting this movie to be a LOT worse. I definitely expected them to play it safe with the character for a wider audience. Most aspects of the movie definitely felt crafted to be safe. But I'm just glad the central character wasn't as watered down as he could have been. Judging by the majority of the incarnations I've seen in comics and games, he's pretty spot on.

This pretty much summarizes how I feel about Venom. Is it a cinematic masterpiece? No. But not everything has to be. Some movies just gonna be stupid and fun and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, we need stupid fun movies. They're refreshing and nice to watch. Not everything has to be a grand work of art. On one hand I wish Venom's marketing team had advertised it properly, but on the other walking into the movies and seeing that was one of the best surprises I had this fall.

Venom is a $100 million dollar horror comedy monster movie. It has more in common with An American Werewolf in London or Evil Dead than it does The Avengers or The Dark Knight. It may not be perfect, but it's at least something *new.* Something *different.* Which the superhero movie genre desperately needs after years of Marvel and DC releasing the same movie 15 times and pretending it's something new. It may actually be my favorite live action comic book movie of the year so far and I doubt Aquaman (Which, again, looks like a generic superhero movie) will beat it.

I went into the movie with lowest expectations, thinking it was gonna be another Suicide Squad or mediocre like Ant-Man 2, but I was pleasantly surprised. The biggest strength of this movie is obviously Tom Hardy playing off himself, but all other performances were on point. The cartoonishly slimey bad guy, his love interest and her new boyfriend, honestly I enjoyed all of their screen presence and they each served specific function for the movie. Now, the second biggest strength might also be the movies biggest issue for some folks - its tone. For me personally, I didnt want a dark broody movie ala Spawn or Shadow the hedgehog, and this wasn't it. It felt more like a dark comedy with Jim Carrey from the 90's. This movie is very stupid, but in a good way, and I think they know it. Some people say that this is as bad as catwoman or daredevil or a bad dceu movie, which isn't true at all because those movies took themselves very serious. So this felt like a throw back to the tone of the 90's, but not the edgy 90's, which I loved. So this movie will either work for you, or you will reject it like an incompatible symbiotic host. I laughed quite a few times and really appreciated certain immature jokes that felt appropriate for the character, and not dumb pop culture references, which felt out of place like in Doctor Strange. That being said, the movie isn't perfect either. The final boss battle is hard to make out due to the nature of the characters, one minor sub plot is completely wasted and could have been cut from the movie, there are a few plot holes as one might expect, and lack of R rating really does prevent it from utilizing its full potential , but honestly, aside from those, I had a really good time and the kiss scene was my favourite ;^]

The size of the narrative doesn't help much. I'd say most of the film is made focusing on act 2(with end of act 1 and start of act 3 together there). It's the Inner strugle and how Venom and Eddie interact the focus of the story(my personal opinion). Without Riot Venom would be fighting average War equipment and the main villain would just fell like a weakling(in a bad way). On the other hand, having Riot in Act 2 and Act 1 wouldn't really work with the inner struggle of Venom because it would was the combat in Simbionte vs Simbionte or having Venom and Riot work together only to fight in the end. As a result, Riot had to be dismissed to a just cliche fight(barely decent, although some small parts where good). Many films suffer from these details, but it's just as is.

I agree with you overall, but I think that the movie has a kinda huge flaw: the relationship among Eddie and Venom, which has always been the key to their character. Venom telling Brock he likes him “because on his planet Venom is a loser like Brock is on earth” is just one of the poorest justifications and agency motivations I’ve ever heard. The whole plot could have been much more meaningful if they both shared hatred towards Drake and Life Foundation, and if Venom was a way for Brock to enhance his righteousness. Without this, it’s just a bunch of gags and an amazing actor (Hardy) with some mediocre stuff around it.

I surprising enjoyed the movie. I had a good time. It’s nothing special. The movie is a bit of a step back for the superhero genre, feeling like something out of the early-2000s, but it’s not terrible-terrible. The villain, for me, was one of the best parts of the movie, mainly for the actor’s performance. Now, I don’t think the villain is good, but the way he has his head SO FAR up his own ass about “saving the world” and shit, is hilarious, especially when he’s trying to convince the others that what he’s doing is right, that “everything is fiiiiiine.” It’s great.

Snyder is in his own league though, Venom nails what he failed to do with Man of Steel, reinvent a character without taking away the qualities that make the character great. Story wise it was definetly better than BVS which was all over the place and just stupid. Venom's story was just more simple and straight forward. it could definetly use more work but its not a bad movie, I can think of better movies with more plot holes and poor editing, *coughs* Jurassic Park *coughs*

I might be the only one thinking this, but Venom gives me hope for the future of superhero movies. We're finally starting to see audiences moving slowly away with "if it's not a cinematic masterpiece, it's *trash* and a failure", something the Dark Knight has done to the genre. That "good/okay" movies aren't just discarded and seen as pointless. Also, that bad reviews aren't the defining factor of if people are going to see it.

@@thebatmanbadass30000 no, I actually implied that Venom is the exact opposite of the Dark Knight, when talking about movie quality. I'm saying that TDK set a very high standard for all following movies to come. Which some have met, but overall we shouldn't use the *best* as a baseline, because good to average films will always be seen as irrelevant to a great film such as TDK.

I appreciated your commentary -- except for your jab at the CG. God Himself could spend 10,000 years on CG and people will say it's spotty or subpar. A film critic could be stabbed to death on a holodeck and his final words would be, "That knife didn't look so real." I'm so tired of good CG being ripped apart. We had mediocre CG in the final fights of Black Panther and Wonder Woman. I will allow that, but Venom delivered. What I thought you would mention was that pointless and ultra-long car chase. Low point of the movie for me.

Personally Venom has always been one of my favourite Villain type characters and I hated how the portrayed him in Spider-Man 3. So because of that and how some of the older comics portray Eddie and his motives I was expecting another stupid trope filled Sony film. (Personally I think Sony isn’t good at being a superhero film company) But I was super surprised. The action (aside from the final battle though that wasn’t bad, I think the confusion of who is who ties into how Eddie and Drake would feel in that situation) was really good, they learned how to fight with each other rather than against the other. The comedy was awesome, the dynamic of Eddie and Venom was reminiscent of what they’ve developed overtime in their comics. The other characters were really well done, they wonderfully showed how every character worked, and how they’re relationship dynamics functioned. I like that while Eddie still loves Anne, he doesn’t get her back and he doesn’t sabotage her relationship. He knows eventually that he was really not good as a partner to her and the film shows a healthy way for someone to deal with that. The cinematography actually wasn’t that bad, a hospital isn’t meant to look amazing or inviting, in a real hospital it looks bland and plastic, the only comfortable places are psych-wards and neonatal care units. For them to glorify a hospital would be idiotic and useless to the plot. The rest of it fits things, the streets Eddie walks fit how he is in each part, in the beginning of his story here he is relatively well off so things look nicer and cleaner, he’s in a better part of San Fran and he’s healthier. Later he has lost everything, he’s jobless and about to lose his shitty appartement (which they make look like shit reasonably for his character too, by that point he’s a slob alcoholic) the city itself has beautiful points, like the city scape Venom admires. They use the Cinematography in an intelligent and story driven way that I really enjoyed. Personally I think it’s an all around good movie, though it has flaws everything does. I was immensely surprised and I’m happy with the result.

100% on point. 'Endearing' is the word I used in my review. Venom wasn't just a maniacal monster hellbent on chowing down on livers. He was, as you said, a loner, a bit of a loser, but lovable and loving-he had personality. I can imagine him being bullied by the other symbiotes, being more interested in going skating or playing video games than taking over the universe. He was the Lethal Protector. They captured that Venom so well. I was not expecting to like the film at all, but I came out enjoying it and wanting to go see it again. People say it's a film that the late 90's lost on the way to the box office, but that to me is its charm. It's a quirky buddy comedy. It's The Odd Couple for comic book fans.

Dude I’m hearing such conflicting things about this movie 😂😂😂 I guess I gotta see it now. I am liking all the snuggly fanart of Eddie and Venom. (fight me). And I mean look...for those of you new here there has always been a weird romantic connection between Eddie and Venom. HELL Venom is essentially Peter Parker’s jaded ex who wants to get revenge on him so it teams up with Eddie (who also hates Peter) and deem that they together will destroy Peter. ANNNNND then time goes on and they discover they’re actually a pretty good team and Venom discovers that Eddie is a better fit for it anyway so they stick together. If that isn’t an adorable (albeit parasitic haha) love story I don’t know what is...

I especially liked when Mrs. Chen tells him "Life hurts Eddie.. that's just the way it is" and I could feel Eddie thinking "But I don't want it to be, for you and for others" without the character ever spelling it out to us, a great testament to Tom Hardy creating a character so strongly that we can anticipate his reactions to things.

This movie was so sloppily written, they really did take the easy way out I can’t believe you don’t see it like the symbiote latched on to some lady that then latches on to an older lady who holds on to it for 6 months while our villain is testing with his own symbiotes that he OWNS. Then some little girl gets infected from the old lady and somehow manages to get Into this facility which the movie goes out of it’s way to show is hard to get into because of tight security, just to infect our villain with a symbiote that just travelled across the world despite he had symbiotes that he OWNED in this very facility. Also why would the scientist girl go to some random reporter for help instead of I don’t know filming the homeless people that are trapped in that facility and showing it to the cops to get her boss fired. Like that’s literally all the reporter is gonna do, but it was just an excuse to get Eddie infected. Sooo nonsensical it’s like they didn’t even think twice about the story

Professional film critics look at all aspects of a movie. That's how everyone should look at films. The best films are the prefect mix of content and form. A film needs to have more than just great acting. Or just great craft. Or just a great script. It needs to succeed on all levels. The acting, tone, writing and editing in venom are all over the place. Unlike a film like Spider-Man 2, which feels like a fully realized vision, venom feels like a studio product. If you want to see a far better version of the story, watch the low budget gem UPGRADE that came out earlier this year.

I disagree. Movies must be judged on many ways and film critics tend to be dismissive by not considering particular elements of movies. As long as a movie manages to have mostly okay or decent elements, but do well on some parts, it works as a good movie, and in some cases, as a great one. This means some movies can have better focus on some things and can use the others solely to serve it or as an extra, while staying true to the budget.

Character development was totally lacking, Venom's change from wanting to destroy the world to "oh I like you so no thanks" (in like 2 days) made no sense as did Anne suddenly liking Eddy again, etc. I can agree with you to some extent, moreso on the humor front, but I thought it they really missed the mark.

I will agree the character arc is lacking but there wasn't space for that in the movie. The only arc that actually mattered was the relationship between Venom and Eddie, which was good enough in the end. Venom's reason didn't really stick, but it really fitted with the "egotistic" side of Venom and allowed to short cut it. I feel like this movie used the time it had well, but it would take a really longer time to do it a great work.

I’m happy that you enjoyed it. Whilst I did like some of the goofier elements of the film, I think Tom Hardy’s performance is the only thing to write home about with the film. Even then, nobody really has much of a character arc, the action is hard to follow and edited terribly, and great swathes of plot seem to have been cut and replaced by offhand lines. Like, the idea that Venom is kind of a loser on his home planet would have been interesting if it was actually demonstrated anywhere else in the film, instead of clearly being thrown in there because they realised they had cut all the scenes that actually showed Eddie and Venom‘s relationship growing and Venom deciding to be a good guy. Also, I wouldn’t be that bothered about a PG rating if it wasn’t so obvious in the film that it was originally going to be R rated; the Carpenter’s The Thing-style opening scene and the fact that Venom is clearly eating people’s heads off camera clash a lot with the goofy Jim Carrey-esque comedy. I guess I didn’t like the film because I’m more of a nuts and bolts kind of guy who gets bothered when a film is clearly badly put together, and whilst Hardy’s fun double act was enjoyable enough to watch, not only does it not redeem the movie, if this is going to be Sony’s statement of intention with the rest of these, I don’t think I want to see any more of them.

this movie just didn't do it for me. my biggest problem was that there wasn't much depth to the character of Eddie Brock. there's not a compelling reason as to why he dawns the suit, he just kinda comes across it. and I was hoping for a lot of real internal struggle between him and the suit, but there wasn't really any, it's just the suit trash talking Eddie and Eddie getting comically freaked the whole time. he has no arc in the film. the closest they come to developing him is the bad decision he makes in the beginning, but they're don't really go anywhere with it. and yes, the suit technically has an arc, but the problem is that it's an off screen arc. we don't actually know anything about the suit for most of the movie, and then he just tells us what he was like and how he changed. we don't actually get to see him change. we're only told about the arc, we don't experience it, so it has no weight. the tone was also all over the place. sometimes it felt like a horror movie, sometimes it felt like a goofy comedy. now both of these tones are fine or their own, but when put together they just don't mesh. this honestly might be the most tonally inconsistent superhero movie I've ever seen. it was so uneven that I was genuinely baffled in the theatre.

Thank you!!! It's nice to hear a review of the film that is actually positive. I honestly stopped listening to most critics a long time ago. In fact now a days when I look at a movie's rating online I always look at the audience score & completely disregard the crititc score. It feels like critics feel the need to always find negative criticisms in a movie or else they feel like they haven't done their job or their review is incomplete without negativity. So what I have been noticing with so many critics is they will either trash a movie giving it bad reviews if they hate it. Or even if they watch a movie they enjoy, they still feel compelled to say what they liked about the film while also balancing out what they liked with criticisms, regardless if those criticisms are legitimate in an attempt to hit some kind of unwritten quota they internally feel obligated to reach. I find this approach super hacky. Can't people just enjoy things anymore? Other than no Spiderman & the editing, Venom was a good film (I Didn't Even Think The CGI Was Bad). The minor problems with the film mostly come from things like the look which is a studio problem & less the film's problem. Even Spider Man Homecoming (An MCU Film) had that same look. I still go back & play my old consoles like N64 & PS1, the games look horrendous & yet I play them because the gameplay is fun, the characters are well developed, & the stories are engaging. I have so much I want to say in defense of this film, but I don't want to rant for paragraphs, so I will just say thank you for making a good review & a defense for this film. I enjoy your Channel & I am happy to be a subscriber.

Yooooo. Hit the nail right on the head! Dude ive tried explaining this to some of my friends and they still have more modern interpretations of venom in mind instead of taking the book its inspired by and the tone of it. Dude i love lethal protector and separation anxiety!

I’m honestly so god damn tired of edgy superhero movies. This was a breath of fresh air for me as a non-comic reader, and was the most I have honestly enjoyed a superhero movie in many years.

See, I came into this movie wanting so badly to like it. I'd been excited ever since Hardy's casting and I defended it through nearly every controversial reveal (up until the pg-13 reveal, which came in stark contrast to the filmmakers' promises before), but it unfortunately was just not a good movie to me. I did get some enjoyment out of seeing a genuine venom on the big screen for the first time, and there were some standout moments, but it was just an incredibly poorly put-together film on nearly every level. I'm typically the type that does appreciate the visual/technical aspect of film more, but I still have an almost equal appreciation for character and writing. Both are a necessity to every movie to me, but Venom honestly didn't do any of that very well at all. As much as I genuinely want to agree with the points made about the film's strengths, I just can't help but feel like even those were glaring failures, or at best, mediocre. That being said, I'm still glad people can enjoy this movie, as I recognize there is fun to be had with it. Unfortunately, I just can't quite agree with the argument that it's script and characters were its biggest positives. Regardless, this was still a good video, and it is interesting to hear your thoughts.

I saw the movie last night and I was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews but man I really liked this goofy film and I literally almost cried when Eddie (SPOILER ALERT) “died” even though I knew Eddie would make it out alive, but you know what made the scene to me more tear jerking was when the venom symbiote crawled back over to Eddie’s hand to bond with him. Also when venom said “bye Eddie” I almost cried.

To me, Venom wasn't a movie, it was a product. The characters don't have arcs, they stay pretty much the same. The humor is absurd and really over the top. Sometimes it comes unintentionally. Entertaining movie at best.

I would really disagree with the characters not having arcs. Eddie, Ann and (lol) The Symbiote all have pretty clear ones in my opinions.

But Eddie only loses his job, girlfriend and apartment (he just reacts to what happens). We never find out why he becomes and anti-hero, what's his motivation? Ann is in a relationship when the movie starts and by minute five, she's in another! The symbiote says that he likes Eddie and he identifies with him but that's it. And the villain... my Goooooddd, every time that guy opened his mouth he was giving the same speech about the future of humanity and humans being disposable. It was like listening to a comercial, not a character. We never see a backstory or a detail for why he is the way he is. Although i agree with you about that moment when he's talking about the Isaac's story, it was a really good metaphor.

I agree with the movie feeling like a “product”. Idk it just didn’t feel as organic to me as other movies in the genre. Seemed like it had a checklist it was going down and hitting all the beats. Took no risks. Not a bad movie, but kinda jank.

Venom is a ok movie with some very enjoyable scenes. Not really better nor worse than the average MCU movie or general comic book live action. But because its not a MCU movie, MCU/Disney fanboys tried to sabotage it even before release. Even boycoting it because of it. Shills will ofc jump on that bandwagon too, because it generates clicks. Tom Hardy is way more enjoyable than for example... Chris Hemsworth as Thor, who for some reason has gotten to be in so many MCU films.

Blind MCU hater spotted, Hemsworth as Thor was good/passable until Ragnarok and Infinity War where he's become one of the best actors in the whole franchise now. No knock on Hardy as I love the guy but that's just a silly comparison with Thor. A better comparison would be with Cavill as Superman tbh

Well, some actors you enjoy, some you dont. I cant really say he is bad actor, its just his Thor character. I have not watched Ragnarok, but I have read that some MCU fans dislike that they changed his character to become a more "surfer dude bro".

The 80's Wolf some fans, lmao like one in a milion. The only people who i've seen dislike him were 40 year old comic book fanatics, sooo :/ also, hell, why would marvel fans try to sabotage the movie?? Damn, from what i've seen, marvel fans are all over this movie! Maybe it was a corporate scheme to sabotage the movie's earnings, but don't try to pin it on the fans mate

Not really @@yuungi9391 Marvel fans went to twitter and copy pasted the same things over and over to try to make others not go and watch venom. Stop defending idiots.
