Not-so-fun-fact: this movie (along with her HORRIBLE mistreatment growing up) largely contributed to her wanting to quit acting and going off the deep end. I fell down the "early 2000s child star" rabbit hole and her story makes me so sad because she's a fantastic comedic actress. I'm pretty sure they didn't give the brother and Amanda's character facial hair due to her dysmorphia. Playing the male character was difficult enough for her--to the point where she would avoid mirrors while in boy drag--so I think facial hair would've been too much for her. I love Amanda, and this movie was so much fun to watch when I was younger (and is still a guilty pleasure for me to this day). I just wish she had as much filming as we did watching. She's an icon, and I hope she'll be able to look back on this movie one day and see how great she really is.

I feel bad that this role gave her dysmorphia. She's a stunning woman and was hysterical in the role. I thought she looked extremely feminine even while pretending to be the brother (which made it funnier since we could tell it was her), but I can understand why it'd mess with her head. Of course we'd selfishly love to see Amanda star in more roles because she's so talented, but if she has some peace in her life that's more important

Amanda and Channing are so talented and pull off both the comedic and serious scenes, which can be hard to do. The fact that she didn't really look like a boy didn't bother me because the people she was trying to fool into thinking she was her brother had never met him. As soon as she encounters Monique, she hides her face because she knows the disguise isn't enough. Thanks for the review, it was entertaining! I'm off to watch She's the Man 💕

I have to say that I love the crap out of this movie! Unfortunately it gave AB a huge complex around "looking like a boy" but I think the comedy *is* the absolute absurdity of it. She very much did not look like her brother (even from the back) and did not make a "convincing" (for lack of a better term) cis male character at all. And it was still somehow funny and charming. The mom is a waspy gem of a human. I would like to suggest "Ratz" (2000) as a movie review. It's about two teenage girls using magic to turn literal rats into humans for them to date. So.

At one point she was convinced that someone had implanted a microchip in her brain. Last year, she credited her parents with helping her recuperate and kick her addictions, and when she moved to end the conservatorship, her parents fully supported it. The conservatorship option exists for a reason, and not all parents are the same. They saved her life.
@jogighopa
@jogighopa Жыл бұрын
Amanda Bynes' case is actually the case of conservatorship helping person; Britney was put under it for basically having emotions at journalists stalking her; Amanda was driving under influence and using drugs and actually had issues that need addressing and they were addressed; she also moved out of the spotlight to get help for her mental health and recover from her addiction, while Britney's famil abused her and forced her to work; in case of Britney, her family wanted to prevent her from getting out of the conservatorship so they could keep their "cash cow", while Amanda's parents actively supported her in ending the conservatorship. Conservatorships aren't inherently bad; the whole system was just abused when it comes to Britney, but can be very much beneficial to others.

I have so much to say about this one! I am a Shakespeare teacher and use this movie as part of our study on Twelfth Night: Or, What You Will. I think it's a really fun and decently accurate example of a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's play, as well as the Disney movie Motocrossed. In both of these the Viola character has to pretend to be her brother due to gender discrimination in sports, but in the play she doesn't pretend to be her brother at all; she's just mistaken for him because of the resemblance. She's the Man is pretty clever in how they incorporate the Malvolio character, but definitely had some cringe, especially at the end lol. Fun fact: Twelfth Night is named after the Eve of Epiphany, which is a "topsy-turvy" celebration & masquerade where one pretends to be someone/something else and everyone plays along. Even in Shakespeare's day this plot was not believable lol. The second part of the title "Or, What You Will" is basically Shakespeare for "Or, Whatever the Heck You Want". 😁

What discrimination in sports? Women and men are segregated to protect women from getting hurt. Also, I know it upsets you to hear this, but if all sports leagues were unisex, there’d be no female athletes.

One more thing. Do you really think this movie is a good example of Shakespeare to play for students? Maybe this is why our education system is so bad these days. The teachers are as dumb as their students. I used to be an English teacher, so I’m asking you as a peer, not some condescending jerk who doesn’t know anything about your job.

@@danieljohnson2005the discrimination being that the girls team was cut with no discussion about it and the boys team was allowed to remain in tact instead of just splitting the budget for both teams. I watched a deep dive on KZbin once about Amanda Bynes and it made me feel so frustrated on her behalf. The IMDB fact about her role in this movie giving her depression is really simplified. Seeing herself as a boy gave her intense body dysmorphia/gender dysphoria. Her life as a celebrity being publicized (often without her consent by paparazzi) coupled with her own body image issues made her afraid of being seen when she couldn't control what she looked like. So I can totally see why playing a role in a movie where she looked nothing like herself could mess with her in a "that's not ME" out-of-body kind of way, as well as a "people are going to make fun of the way I look in this movie" kind of way. If I can find the video I saw, I'll add a link, because it really gave me some insight on her experiences!

@@Lily27636 I can only say this as a trans guy, but I feel gender dysphoria when I look like a girl, it's distressing and confusing. I can totally see it as logical, that someone who is a girl, strongly identifies as a girl, loves their appearance as a girl, but has to look like a guy; would also find that disconnect with their self image distressing and confusing. people just don't feel comfortable having to be something they don't connect with. it's scary looking in the mirror and not seeing yourself. true, many actors have to change their appearance for roles, or even to conform to industry expectations. Be it dressing a certain way, or feeling pressured to have plastic surgeries to maintain their careers. all these things can be really bad for peoples mental health. Some actors may be fine with gender-bending, others may not. it's all about peoples personal comfort levels.

Hey Jaime! Excellent video as always, your skits are amazing and I absolutely lose it at your added sound effects. I just wanted to pop in and add some perspective to Amanda’s reaction to seeing herself in boy form: I think Amanda has some body dysmorphia going on; I’ve been a chronic sufferer for years and educate people on it pretty frequently: when you see yourself in a different way, especially in this case where she has limited makeup and a downright unfortunate haircut, it can be *extremely* triggering. I think it’s been confirmed she does experience BDD, which is why you see her go through radical changes in appearance. I remember hearing a story from Lisa Foiles about Bynes being so upset about her acne she’d been to cover her face on the way to make up. It’s really sad, stuff I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. I hope someday she really finds peace.
