I was loving Prometheus, up until it started asking too many questions. For me, those are the best kinds of movies, especially in the sci fi genre, but i felt this movie couldve gave us a couple of answers without asking more questions, and this film wanted to keep the engineer history a mystery, which i was completely fine with, but at the same time i was extremely curious as to who or what created the engineers. I don't hate this movie, i just feel like it has flaws, but those flaws dont bring the movie down to being able to say its a shit movie. It may have been disappointing to others, but i feel along the years to come this film will be greatly appreciated as a classic.
@nuke2625
@nuke2625 4 жыл бұрын
@@the_henchman4268 yeah me too. The problem for me was that I expected engineers to give us answers. They created us so they must be more civilized and enlightened and way advanced than us, instead we got a very aggressive primally behaving organism. That was a bit disappointing.

The reason we did not have a proper Prometheus' sequel and Covenant happened, because some damn children cried too loud about the former not being a movie about monster in a corridor. What a waste, I freaking loved the premise of Prometheus, and the cast was so freaking great!

It seems that most people are not disappointed with this movie not because of a lack of explosions or scares, but due to its ridiculously illogical character motivations and such.
@impalabeeper

stevethefishdotnet SPOILER: I still don't understand why Fassbender's character had to poison that drink. Sure one incident of insult wouldn't make me a killer or even experiment on a person or whatever purpose he has in mind. I never thought of robots as being onion-skinned and it is out of character to a stoic robot who was patiently waiting to arrive at the destination for years. Another thing is that these 'scientists' are not scientist. The biologist Milburn who has been attacked by a worm creature should know not to try to pet wild creatures!!

stevethefishdotnet Nah: I've debated a lot about Prometheus and usually the guys who think that the movie is illogical and is "full of plotholes" fall into these two categories: - they slept through the film - they are hopelessly stupid and they lack a very basic understanding of film language Sad but true, people nowadays are just more into movies that serve you story on a silver platter by overexplaining everything and they don't even do that through visuals anymore, it's just dialogue.

My expectations didn't cause me disappointment with the movie, it was the characters actions in the movie that left me feeling I was seeing only a beautifully filmed movie with poor characters. So I liked half of what I got . . . maybe the other half was on the cutting room floor, cut down for timing and/or mystery - the director's/writers' cut. To each their own, this my opinion of why I only half liked/half hated Prometheus.

This is exactly what I'm talking about in the video, a prime example. This film is NOT a direct prequel to Alien, there are still supposedly 2 more films in this series that Ridley Scott wants to do before Alien. Don't believe marketing and hype. This is a movie I feel years down the line will be hailed as something special, once all the hype has died down. People hated 2001 A Space Odyssey when it was first released too...

Well, the original script explained their situation better. The suits they were wearing were pretty much entirely bulletproof. Cutting details like that out made the characters seem a lot more dumb than they were

Prequels are always a hard territory. You have to make things right for the hardcore fans while also making it look good for the general audience. People just set their expectations too high. You have to remember, alot has changed since the past. New techniques and technologies are made for 21st-century movie-making. So while, being nostalgic, you have to be ingenious and create new boundaries. I think this movie created new boundaries. Just like when Alien first came out. Or even 2001: A space odyssey.

Well I see what you're saying but the term film came from the fact that movies were strips of film going through a projector. So in reality, since most movies are digital now, if you want to get all technical, that term doesn't even make sense anymore. However, I view all movies as an art form, whether they be big budget or small budget. So no I guess I don't adhere to that.

Didn't like it. The opening scene was quite promising, but after that there was nothing that really tickled me. Most characters were quite annoying and there wasn't a single character I felt was well-written. For all it's symbolism and suggested meaning, it really delivers a very shallow story and instead of expanding on the story, the whole thing degenerates into a gorefest way too soon for any real suspense to build up. This movie could've been alright, if it cut the bullshit and violence by about 80% and took some time to flesh out the story and characters. But that's Hollywood for ya.

It had all the makings and an amazing idea but it just scratched the surface and I think it would have been easy to add more suspense to the first 2 acts, but they for whatever reason didn't. Almost as though they were banking on a grand finale of some sort. Can't wait for a sequel.

From all the bitching I've been hearing, I was expecting a really shitty movie with and a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. Instead I got a pretty damned good modern sci-fi films and a 73% Rotten Tomato score. I don't agree with the complaints at all: -It's an Alien prequel, so it should have X, Y, and Z- So? It's your fault for your expectations. I actually prefer more prequels like this in which it expands on the universe and has nothing to do with the plots of the other movies. -The characters are stupid- But believably stupid. Human beings are cocky by nature and will do very stupid things to impress people whom they want to be liked by (the worm thing). Also, when under shock, stress, and pressure, people may not think rationally. Yes, there are stupid moments, but nothing unbelievably moronic that happens in typical slasher flicks. -It's boring- I like slow movies. If you have a problem with this, then '70s sci-fi must be painful. I don't feel like arguing anymore points, but my point is that it's not as bad as it was made out to be and ... I'm disappointed that I wasn't disappointed.

I don't know why they didn't get the memo that everyone was leaving, but that is a more valid complaint than yours. (EDIT: even if they did get lost, the map is sent to the captin/pilot, not them) And yes, I saw Alien directly after. I like them both. However, I don't see the connection to "mapping guys" and your disappointment. Saying that your opinion speaks for itself is a fallacy. i didnt go into this movie expecting too much but at the same times a lot through the movie i was asking why. The questions and the motives of the people in the movie felt... klunky. Plot developments seemed half baked by the time they transitioned into new things, and there were several sequences of events that just seemed to defy logic. It seemed to transition very poorly between plot points, and felt like what they were trying to convey didnt fully develop by the time something new came along.

Yeah, it's confusing because the ship crash lands in the same position as the one in Alien, and it makes people think it's the same ship, which then leaves the movie with inconsistent plot holes. But it's definitely a different ship, and that makes the story wide open for part 2 of this movie.

Wow. I've got so much respect for you as a thoughtful reviewer and truly insightful thinker when it comes to storytelling and what you've called the 'director's perspective' on filmmaking. In fact, your take on Drive and the precise work of Nicholas Refn was one of the best videos I've seen on KZbin this year, and I watch all kinds of videos. Truly marvelous and sometimes poignant thoughts on a modern masterpiece. And so, if you have such an appreciation for that brilliant piece of storytelling, what were you smoking when you watched this stone-fingered piece of dreck? How could a mind as perceptive and articulate as yours get totally bamboozled by the smoke and mirrors of a big, hyper-stylized production and not realize you were watching a barely coherent story with plot holes you could drive a bulldozer through? How can you love Drive and this film as well? I don't get it. Please justify: 1. The main character learns the love of her life has been violently killed and shows not even a hint of sadness over this loss. 2. The two scaredy cat dumb-as-dirt scientists who get left behind somehow find the nerve to toy with alien serpents. 3. A woman who just had an abortion heads right back into the battle with no recovery time whatsoever. These are just the most obvious moments when I was totally taken out of the story. Even your own commentary made countless remarks on dumb plot twists and bad acting. An "excellent" sci-fi movie? An A-? I think I'll now hunt for your review of a great achievement for the genre: Moon. I hope you gave it better marks than this pile of overreaching nonsense.

Tell me was there supposed to be a 20min scene of her crying her eyes out about dudes death or what...Christ Almighty!!!!:-/ Now onto question #2 the two stupid scientist were exactly that, two stupid scientist. Not sure what the big deal is about those two and now onto question #3 She literally had no choice but to run for her life. Tell me, was she supposed to just sit there crying about her wound and let the engineer do his thing and destroy earth and/or kill her too while she's in the cradle position holding her tummy. She had no choice but to GTFO and do what she had to do and if you actually listen to her every time something or someone touches her tum tum or she falls or whatever shes in agony. If you don't believe me rewatch that whole scene. She wincing and squealing the whole time after the surgery. For gods sake, you all need to put your phones down or stop daydreaming while your watching these movies and actually pay attention.

From what I have heard, I think the biggest problem was them marking it as a prequel to Alien. Because with prequels, people expect all the answers. It shoulda been like with Split, where they make no mention of how it was connected to another movie and then people woulda maybe had different thoughts about it

I expected a more critical review then this... Prometheus had a lot of potential but too many stupid moments took me out of the experience... And I don't know, but to me leaving story elements out of context is more a sign of confusion and bad writing then the film being smart. Those who defend that this is actually a smart movie I feel sadly is under cognitive dissonance, wanting the movie to be more then what it actually is so they double down on it being great. To me this is just being incredibly dishonest.

Flawed but enjoyable. Pros: - Visual style, colour palette, art design. - Score - Good premise - Noomi Rapace - Fassbender, Pearce. Theron fell short but OK. - Some interesting hints and insight on the Alien mythos. Cons: - Some of the dialogue is cringy, cheesy and outright bad - Most of the ship crew are nonsensical assholes who behave absurdly. Had they stuck with a smaller crew including the competent actors and it would have been much better. I overall liked it.

@@Brakiri The "space jokey mystery" isn't the problem NOR was it "killed" in the way that you have said because people have always wanted to know who the space jockeys were for the longest as there were alien comics BEFORE prometheus that explained on who they were, people DO want answers to who the space jockeys were but we don't need to know exactly THAT specific space jockey was at the beginning of alien movie, just the species themselves and who they are, it's making the engineers the space jockeys themselves which is the central problem, they should have been two separate species because the space jockey's "fossil remnants" is clearly a living being, it's NOT a suit as they stated in the first movie that ribcage bursted OPEN from the inside, it's not a suit. I like the engineers existing, I'm not fine with the space jockeys BEING them, as I said, they should have been two separate species. And the backstory as fine and a good premise, the characters doing illogical nonsense is not. Also the engineers should NOT have been the one to make the xenomorphs, they should have been a natural species in the galaxy in it's nature that naturally grew out of nature and that's it. NOT created. And Chris Stuckkmann IS a good and serious guide to know for good and bad movies and people SHOULD listen to him but you don't have to agree with him in every scenario.

It's probably a mix of nostalgia & that I really dig the Xenomorphs, they've never managed to mess them up, no matter how bad the movies are (arguably AVP series included, honestly). Prometheus? Prometheus is garbage. You know something's wrong when the director makes the protagonist incapable of running sideways for a nice long running sequence, which they probably could've done with her running sideways like a normal human being anyways, no?

I think it's a mistake to say "you shouldn't watch this film with any expectations, or hopes of continuity to the first Alien." It is a prequel, and theoretically should tie in and fit with the first Alien, but it doesn't. When the characters arrive at that site in "Alien," things have been left a certain way, there are EGGS on the ground, not metal containers full of black goo, etc. It's just a vague connection to the same universe, but it doesn't connect with the story AT ALL. Plus, most of the characters are idiots who don't have any business being there in the first place. Why is Guy Pearce even there? Are we supposed to believe that the LA-hipster boyfriend of the lead character is really a scientist, or contributes anything to this mission? All he does is complain and get drunk. Characters do things that are completely unmotivated or illogical, or even just physically impossible (like getting an emergency C-Section of an alien squid, then getting stitched up and immediately be physically able to run and jump and perform in action scenes). The bit when they're running from the alien ship as it's rolling towards them, when all they had to do was takes a few steps to the right or left, and they'd be out of its way?? STUPID. The bit where the "scientists" encounter a weird, alien-cobra monster, and the one guy is like "Hey, let me take my helmet off! Hey little guy, coochie coochie coo!" STUPID! The lead character piloting an alien spacecraft at the end that she'd never know how to fly… COME ON. Yes, visually it's beautiful. Amazing FX, amazing shots, production design, sound and music, etc. The acting is solid all the way around, and of course Ridley is a great director. When you have 200+ million dollars, you can afford great actors, great FX and everything else. But the problem is, on a 200+ million dollar movie, you have so many studio executives in the kitchen trying to stir the same pot of soup, and the SCRIPT suffers. You get countless re-writes, several different writers brought in, so many opinions, so many people putting their two cents in, that the whole thing gets dumbed down and makes no sense. Bottom line, IF they wanted people to just watch it as a new Sci-Fi film and not come to it with any baggage or expectations, they shouldn't have made an "Alien" prequel. They should have just made some new Sci-Fi movie, not had those iconic croissant shaped spaceships, not had any connections to "Alien" whatsoever. But because it's a prequel, people are going to have expectations, they're going to come in with baggage. And those people, like me, will be disappointed...

He can say whatever he wants to try and backpedal his way out of the lack of continuity between this and ALIEN. From the design and position of the alien craft, to the Engineer, to the birth of the alien at the end, it's clear that this is setting up the first ALIEN movie. If his intentions were anything other than that, it's really misleading to audiences, and convolutes the whole issue of what relation this should have with the ALIEN movies. It's kinda sorta in the same universe, but not really. It's kinda sorta setting up the first ALIEN, with visual elements that are exactly out of that movie, but it's not really a prequel… The whole thing is just muddy, and even without these discrepancies, I'd still have a few dozen other problems with this film. Sorry, yes it is just a disagreement. I respect your views.
@sulezraz
@sulezraz 10 жыл бұрын
Jesse D'Angelo ure probably right its too muddy to go either way, the whole alien getting born from the engineer was more of a side story or add on, it was mixed up with the main aspect of the story which was discovering where they came from.

It breaks down complex organisms like the sacrificial engineer and Holloway, into pure genetic, primordial material. That can then reproduce through cell divsion to be ingested by more simple organisms. 2. When it is ingested by simple organisms, the organism rapidly mutates resulting in accelerated evolution like the worms of LV-223.

***** Actually, NO it isn't! *It's CRAP!* And if YOU knew anything about cinematography, you'd realize that. It's a shallow reproduction, made for shallow individuals, who have no idea what the word, "Pacing" means. The first "Alien", was a gripping HORROR MOVIE, in which they never actually showed you what creature looked like. But instead, played off the viewers own fear with clever timing that made you were completely invested and cared about the outcome. Prometheus, on the other hand -- is just a fucking mess! I did not care one jot, what happened to any of them. And after an hour, was just waiting for the damn thing to be over. *If you like it --- well, good for you. Some people also liked the Star Wars Prequels.* There's no accounting for taste. Jesus Chris... you may want to go back and reform your opinion on this one. It is possibly the worst movie of the last 5 years.

As someone who didn't see any of the Alien movies until after watching Prometheus, I actually thought the movie was quite good and could have done without all the Alien references. After seeing the first and second Alien movie, I now understand and like the references, but I still believe that movie stood on it's own. It was a solid sci-fi movie.

Glad to hear it's good! Do you think it's necessary to see in 3-D or is 2-D good enough?

Is this sarcastic? I mean, honestly. It's pretty much famous for being bad. And really really stupid. And you think it's deep and amazing. Fuck me, man. Are you sure that you're in the right line of work?

+Northernmight It ... isn't famous for being bad. Its in the 60s on rotten tomatoes. Its famous for being controversial. And Chris is in the camp that likes it. He explained why and backed it up. And in a broader sense, I expect movie reviewers to have some difference of opinion. I wouldn't want Chris(or anyone for that matter) to just go along with whatever the general consensus is.

+Dillon McManus He backed absolutely nothing up in any detail whatsoever. This movie is quite blatantly an incoherent mess. It's as if a few amateur script writers sent in half-arsed first drafts and an editor meshed them together into an abomination of a screenplay.

Mr. Arsebiscuit See what you just said has no evidence backing it up. It's just an insult without any examples. You could literally say that about any movie, so it's not good criticism. I'm just pointing out the tiny bit of hypocrisy.

+Dillon McManus It's not an insult Dillon; it's a criticism, there is no need to get so salty about it. Simply disagreeing with Struckmann's assessment is not hypocrisy; it's called a difference of opinion. The entire movie is self-evident in it's incoherent plot structure, lack of interesting characters, character development and weak dialogue. If you wish to disagree and explain to me what exactly is worthy of praise in the movie you are free to do so, but I doubt you will be convincing. This movie is a famous example as a failure in script-writing, you should look up the production problems of the script to give you clarity on this matter. :)

+Dillon McManus Yesterday at around 8:30pm a punk who was wearing a black sweatshirt pulled out a pair of scissors at me. Luckily I had enough agility and I pulled out a rock because if I'd pulled out paper, he would have won.

I usually go into a movie without any expectations. Doesn't matter how many great movies they've made. I honestly liked Prometheus a lot. Sure there is some ridiculous stuff in it (running away in a straight line from the crashing ship) but the overall cinematography and atmosphere is great. I think a lot of people go watch a movie and expect an even better film than the previous movie that the director made or the previous movie in the series. In this case people expected a movie as good as Alien (yeah... that's basically impossible). Same thing happened with Elysium (people expected it to be as good as District 9). I didn't tbh and I liked the movie as an action movie with a bit more content in it to make you think about certain things within our society. I honestly think that if Blomkamp hadn't made District 9 before it, the movie would have gotten a way higher score from most people.

Prometheus IS an Alien prequel and in that respect it's an insult to the first Alien film the way the three episodes of star wars is to the original episodes of star wars, yeah I hate this movie
@annonymousmaniaciii

It is NOT an Alien prequel, it is a completely separate movie that exists within the realm of Alien. It is an Alien spin-off, AT MOST. Stop bringing Alien into the mix when you are meant to judge the movie based solely on ITS OWN MERITS.

I don't know when i'm seeing it maybe i'll see it when "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" comes out and this was a great review. I'm seeing for Ridley Scott, the trailer looks incredible, and Michael Fassbender. Chris, what did you think of "Alien3" and "Alien: Resurrection?"

yeah then again, it's not IMPOSSIBLE real live humans would react like that. Out of confidence, peer pressure of an other scientist, showing off, an above all super confident about their gear... It shouldn't be singled out because it doesn't hinder anything else in the film and it's not one of those knots you'd have writing the story that you would just throw in a stupid concept and everything turns out fine. It's actually a strong scene.

Chris, did you see the new lizard featurette? In that you can finally see and hear him speaking. And as expected, that really compliments the design. I mean, I liked it before, but now I love it!

Had Ridley Scott took the Prometheus premise and made an original movie. That would've been a great movie. On the other hand everything that reminds you of Alien in this movie, kinda undermines it. Or it falls short in comparison to the original. IT SHOULD BE AN ORIGINAL MOVIE WITH ITS OWN PREMISES AND DIRECTIONS TO GO. DAMN YOU STUDIOS

I was disappointed with Prometheus originally, but now I'm starting to lean towards "Hold on... maybe there's something there after all." I can't say whether my opinion changes once I see it again or not, but I'm getting some "maybe" feelings. There were a few similar cases that didn't quite get me all hot at the first time (Inception, The Expendables...) and I've eventually grown to love those movies, so perhaps. Thanks for review and your thoughts on the movie, Chris, it's been helpful :)

I think prometheus was truly marvelous and they should definitely do a direct sequel to finish off that part of the universe. its definitely not completely an alien movie (some of it i would say goes with the original alien movies). i do think it more than deserves to be in the same universe happy to know its a part of it to be honest.
