People can do strange things after a severe head wound. Peter Porco walked downstairs, opened the front door, got the newspaper, and went back inside, all after suffering a massive penetrating and ultimately fatal axe wound to the skull.

There's also the one where the guy had been shot in the face while sleeping and his girlfriend had been shot too, but they just thought he was on drugs or something, wasn't until later they realised he'd been shot, but by that time it was too late and he later suffered fatal brain injuries.

I saw that interrogation. He kept saying "i just want to go to sleep man". They were screaming at him, and he was literally dying before our eyes. "I don't know man; I am just so sleepy, can I please go to sleep."

I'm an alcoholic. Though I've been sober for a little over two years, I absolutely fell/hit my head more times than I can count while drunk. Waking up with mystery blood from something I couldn't remember happening was fairly regular. I don't know what happened in this case, but I can see myself falling while drunk, knocking myself out, and just staying where I fell, because it happened so many times.

I did that once when I had been binge drinking. Had a drinking problem up till about 6 years ago. I had caught a taxi home, but didn't have enough cash on me. I went up to my apartment to get the extra money. I passed out and hit my head on the tiles in the bathroom. I woke up later and went outside to pay the rest of the fare. I thought only 10 minutes had passed, but it was an hour and a half later. Taxi long gone.

So happy you ACCURATELY explained what bipolar really is. Movies and media have made the mass believe its severe mood swings multiple times a day. I'm diagnosed bipolar type 2, which means longer depressive episodes followed with short spurts of manic episodes. For example, I had a depressive episode last 6.5 months, with a 3 day manic episode. I’m a recovered alcoholic and I can’t count the number of times I fell over. I was just lucky to never be seriously injured. I wonder if she took the bottle with her when she went to get her phone, dropped the bottle, then fell and hit her head on it. In the state she was in, she possibly didn’t realise how injured she was, managed to get to her feet again, picking up the phone and bottle before stumbling to the place she eventually collapsed and died. It just feels more on the side of accidental death than murder to me. 🤷‍♀️

Very true. I as well used to heavily abuse alcohol. I would stumble, fall, injure myself severely. I twisted my ankle twice, tore my acl, almost drowned myself in a tub. Then woke up the next day having little or no recollection of how or why I was injured. ( Edit: Not all in the same night) As far as the tracking of the husband's movement and account of what happened he too may have been to fucked up to remember what he did or went and woke up only remembering what he could. He may have gone back outside to look for her been to fucked up to actually do he job and went back inside and fell asleep.

That's the thing about this case which causes me to have reasonable doubt; why would anyone stage the scene by placing the bottle on top of the phone? That just doesn't make sense. I think the bottle would be more likely to end up on top of the phone, were it a genuine accident. Furthermore, if the man was guilty, wouldn't he have likely taken the bottle back indoors with him and destroyed it, instead of leaving it at the scene of the crime, with his fingerprints all over it?

I was a bartender for 12 years and have a hard time believing that you can hit someone hard enough to kill them without breaking the bottle. Also, absinthe is no joke...even the one in the US. It hits differently than other alcoholic beverages. If it was her first time drinking it she could easily have become erratic. Sad case either way.

Agreed about the absinthe part. That is a highly potent alcohol that most people wouldn't touch. I am included in that group, but I had a former neighbor that had it. He said it totally messed him up, way more than any other type of alcohol & he didn't consume much of it. If the they consumed it & weren't familiar with its potency, then that may have led to the fatal injuries the wife sustained.

I was a bouncer for 6 years and I can assure you you can strike someone with a bottle without it breaking. A girl and her brother and some of his friends were visiting my city for a night out and she ended up hooking up with her brothers best friend and having sex in the toilets, he found out and hit him with a bottle of grey goose vodka they'd bought at table service, it didn't break but fractured his skull and put him in intensive care. The police took the whole bottle as evidence and he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and the copper said if the lad died he'd be looking at a manslaughter charge. So it can happen!

@@mattc2320 the very corners/bottom of the bottle if stuck by a certain angle, could deal ALOT of force without breaking. It's basic physics when it comes to constructual form, it's a right angle point that's bent in a circle. I've built walls with steel/rebar that were curved and can tell you the pressure in those areas are stronger and way more durable. I'm just too dumb to give you the scientific explanation >_

It actually takes a lot of force and it generally won't break first impact unless you struck it on a hard surface that's not a human skull which isn't as hard as let's say the table.

But it's not really all that farfetched. My brother was a bouncer for 15yrs and one of the guys he worked with got hit with a bottle so hard that it fractured his skull + bottle didn't even break. It just depends on what it is. Real life ain't like Hollywood where a bottle breaks just by bashing it against a counter.

Bottles don't break that easily, glass doesn't either. For bottles, certain cups and other things, glass is actually made to not be easily breakable. They even test it by dropping it to make sure it's not gonna break (for example, glasses that are given to kids in cafeterias are made to be specifically more resistant since kids can be clumsier.) But it is true it seems weird he'd have absolutely no trace of blood on his clothes, not even a little bit. It's also surprising to think that if he did kill her it'd be in a fit of rage/as an accident, which means probably a fight would have happened, yet nothing in the house shows that, nobody heard anything, and he didn't even end up with even a scratch or something.

@@Libellulaire I worked in a bar for 10 years. I have broken many many alcohol bottles and glasses. Glasses break if you look at them wrong. I've set down a bottle on a counter and it broke. Is that normal? No. However. Hit someone and knock them out? Sure. The bottle may stay intact. Hit someone hard enough to spray brain matter and the bottle only chips? Sounds off.

Head and brain injuries are more likely to happen if the bottle doesnt break. You can literally smash a bottle on someones dome, and it will not break, but the person is knocked out or even worse. And sometimes you cant even see anything, except for a bump etc.

Yeah, this is a tough one. I think the husband is being perfectly honest in saying that he would never intentionally hurt Kitty, but there was a lot of alcohol involved that night. It’s entirely conceivable that an argument got out of control and he lashed out in a way he would never have done sober. Manslaughter was the correct call. A tragedy for everyone involved.

There are 2 types of bipolar, 1 and 2. It runs in my family. My mother was bipolar one, delusional, paranoid and psychotic. Bipolar 2 is much less than that. My sister and I have it. It's more like very strong mood swings; very depressed and overly talkative. No psychosis.

I wouldn’t have convicted either. It’s insane to me that anyone would call that 100% positive he killed her. If there’s ANY realistic doubt, they’re not supposed to convict. For all we know, nobody killed her, or there’s some lunatic out there who might kill again while the jurors think they got the bad guy. But most people never think about what it means when they convict a potentially innocent person. They just think “oh I wouldn’t have done that. An innocent person wouldn’t blink that much. Those are fake tears.” And other bs like that that doesn’t really mean anything.

Sad case, I feel for their daughter the most. There is so much reasonable doubt, I wouldn’t be able to convict him. It sounds like she had a tendency to get a little wild (no judgement), and things can happen when you lose control. In the end, none of us really know but I would rather have him walk free than be wrongfully convicted

I’m 59 and have gone through most medications out there and my symptoms are still pretty bad. The older I get it seems the worse they are. It can be very disrupting to say the least. Thank you for explaining no two bipolar people are the same.

My mom has bipolar disorder I can honestly say there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking if someone has taken their medication if you know them well enough seriously if you live with someone who has really bad bipolar there is nothing wrong asking …. If you have bipolar and you are going through a manic state do everyone a favor and excuse yourself from that situation because you might not understand it but you are driving everyone insane… and that is coming from a person who as a mom is bipolar schizophrenic type 2 my wife has PTSD with bouts of psychosis so I will say again if it’s someone that you love and you have a good relationship with them there shouldn’t be anything wrong with asking if they taking their medication if they’re acting in a way that would warrant that question….. living with bipolar has its struggles issues by living with someone that has bipolar totally different situation‘s

However it is worth noting that certain head injuries could allow her to get back up, wander around, even go into and out of to the house, before falling unconscious and dying. A subdural hematoma, for instance. So an accidental death isn't impossible with the two locations.

Like others have said, I think the amount of alcohol might've caused an argument that quickly escalated into violence. He might not have realized that he struck her, and figured he'd give her some time to cool off outside. He went to bed until 1am (or whenever that odd security blip was), realized she wasn't back inside, and went out to see what she was doing - only to find she was dead. He panicked and went back inside, tried to process all that happened and how he could explain it, paced around his house, and unable to come up with anything, decided to just say he'd been asleep. Regardless, it does seem like it all came down to an unfortunate series of events from too much alcohol in a short period of time. That poor child, and both families, now have a wound that will never fully go away.

@@craigmeyer6957 I think he switched to killer mode from his military training. When he was completely drunk. There are places that you can hit on the head that will shut a person down. Full force with a bottle... you're done. I won't disclose where to hit people for such an effect. Hand to hand combat is trained in military and it's not the martial arts one. One hit with full force and it's the end. I think he just snapped over an argument and failed to process it in time, and give first aid. Then he just panicked. Shame. It's now a ruined family. 2'nd degree manslaughter, criminal negligence, failure of duty to warn. That would be some heavy charges.

My grandfather had a significant head trauma, laid there, got up and fell 3x before passing away. Mild heart attack first one, major heart attack last one. Head traumas are weird things, each one different. Accidental or otherwise

Elderly people are more prone to serious head injury when falling, as their tissues, including their bone and blood vessels, are more fragile and easily damaged. Kat West was not elderly.

As a true crime enthusiast who has both schizophrenia and bipolar disorders I have to say how much it means to hear someone fairly outline the reality of bipolar symptoms rather than sensationalizing the diagnosis and further inflating the stigma surrounding the condition to increase dramatic appeal or whatever. Me and my family lived in Calera from May 2013 to December 2020. The West family lived a short half-mile away from us. My wife initially saw the story in the local community Facebook group and said “surely this is another Calera, right?” Saying that this story shocked the residents of Calera is an understatement, since at the time, nothing this crazy had happened there in recent memory. Absinthe is no joke, you can get super f****ed up on it and its a completely different kind of drunk than regular alcohol. Accidents do happen, sometimes there is no one to blame, its simply an accident. To me he was charged on flimsy circumstantial evidence. Im not saying hes guilty or innocent but it didn't seem like there was enough to prove without a doubt he did it, and if thats the case, you are supposed to find the person innocent. It's estimated over 900,000 innocent people are currently serving a prison sentence solely based on circumstantial evidence. So many people throughout the years have been released after a re-trial was granted with new evidence. Far too many people are locked up with circumstantial evidence, that shouldn't be enough for a conviction. All these people getting released are proof its not a reliable way to prove guilt.

@@mrandersson2009 if she was hit instead of a fall its not proof without a reasonable doubt it was him, that would be considered circumstantial evidence, or an assumption based on circumstance. Assumption is not proof. And from everything I've read on discerning the difference between a short fall vs a blow to the head, the forensics do not prove one way or the other but rather fall into categories of "more likely" but definitely not 100% one way or the other. It is much easier to determine a fall from a high height, say a cliff, staircase, balcony etc to a blunt force hit vs a short fall onto a hard surface like concrete or a rock vs a blunt force hit since both usually cause small linear fractures, usually impact is of similar force and there is no penetration of an object, like a hammer, knife or pipes tend to cause. A solid unbroken bottle would cause a similar injury to a short fall onto a hard surface since both are mild blunt force. Intense blunt force would be drastically different in that these types usually cause a cave in with massive breaks in the skull, and severe injury to the scalp. An unbroken bottle would create a similar scalp injury where the skin might simply split open from impact much like when a boxer slices open skin when he punches their opponent or if a child fell into the corner of a table and needs stitches. Higher velocity head injuries, like high falls and car accidents also tebd to massively bruise the brain because of the impact of the brain against the skull, usually causing the brain to move back and forth rapidly and repeatedly hitting the skull.

I think you'd find the Bergitte Tengs case here in Norway quite interesting. After over 20 years it has been solved. It's a convoluted story where the cousin was wrongfully accused of being the murderer, so much so that the family was split apart. This caused financial and emotional distress on the cousin, who was wrongfully judged for most of his life. It's a tragic story. The murderer, a man in his 50s, who took the life of Birgitte Tengs (1995) is also accused of taking the life of another person, Tina Jørgensen (2000).

Working in the ED in a hospital I’ve seen instances where a person suffered a head trauma and functioned for a short while afterwards but then succumbed to the injury. This is a tricky case and I can’t say one way or the other. What I am surprised about here is that this occurred in a modern neighborhood but there are not any doorbell cams or other security cameras that caught anything at all. It’s a sad story. I think if I had to blame anything it would have to be the alcohol. It’s fine in moderation but it sounds like they had consumed quite a bit.

It could easily be that someone saw her outside ( after he locked her out) and came around, hit her in the head, and had his way with her before leaving her to die. There hasn't been any testing to find out if he had low sperm counts or not. If he doesn't, then leaves room for someone to have come by when she was passed out. I don't think she was out there without the bottle, drinks don't leave bottles far from them. That means that whoever killed her had the bottle to hit her with before he had his way with her.

Evidence seemed very fishy against him at FIRST, the door being open was the main one that got me. It was supposedly open for like FOUR hours or so, HOWEVER possibly Kat was trying to make her way back into the house after possibly injuring herself and stumbled back outside, leaving the front door open. Then Jeff might have realized the front door was open probably hungover or still drunk, shut it, and went back to bed not realizing or seeing his wife outside. I don't know by the end of this and after seeing them happily together, and even hearing about their "argument" (which just seemed like him being sort of bitchy but not violent) he just doesn't give killer even in the mug shots. Him being "weird" to the police could have just been him being disoriented and having no idea what the hell was going on WHILE he was trying to find his wife might have even been annoyed if he had just woken up and was hungover. Two more things, the neighbor wasn't their "neighbor" she lived a couple STREETS away so how did she know who was pacing in what house?? LASTLY (sorry for so long) he WOULD NOT take the plea deal? Like guilty people don't really do that they usually take the plea deal if they're shit out of luck.

She very easily could have hurt herself being that drunk. When I was in the middle of my drinking days I had a bad weekend that I have no memory of. That Saturday I remember pouring a drink around 10-10:30am and the next thing I know is it's Monday late morning nearly afternoon. I couldn't figure out how to use my phone to call my work, I remember waking up knowing I was supposed to be there and it was very important that I call in. Then I decided I needed a shower before going to the hospital but I couldn't figure out how to turn on the water. Got to the e.r. and it was quickly determined that I had a concussion, pneumonia, and lost 5 toenails....5 toenails no longer attached to my toes and I to this day have no idea what happened. Now, my ex was there the whole time and he said I fell and hit my head, he found me passed out on our front porch in nothing but a t-shirt a d it was middle of November so Dr assumes that is how the pneumonia came about and the toes was from me repeatedly bashing my feet underneath the edge of a heavy glass tv stand. When I asked him why he didn't take me to the hospital before Monday he said he was too scared because there was a warrant for his arrest and he didn't want to answer a bunch of questions and risk getting caught. He is an addict and there his a definite reason he's my ex now. I'm happy to say I'm 6 years sober but that weekend could have ended much worse. I honestly think she most likely fell and he was either too scared to call for help or he really didn't know it happened.

difficult to say from here. how well lit was the place where her body was? how drunk was he? he could have had a clear enough mind to check on her if she was just sulking in front of the door, but couldn't see the body on the other side of the road due to it being dark or him being too drunk to see it from far away.

In regards to her stumbling out of the house with a major head wound either from falling or being hit.. and then dying further down, I watched a case (I think forensic files) where an older man had been violently beat in the head by his son, the man got his newspaper from outside, then started preparing his lunch and getting ready for work before dropping dead. So it is possible a person could go about trying to move and with significant brain injuries even while dying. I don’t think that’s the first incident I’ve heard or read.

When I was in the Marine Corps I saw a guy who had a severely traumatic massive gunshot wound to his head. He was somehow still walking around despite slurring his words badly and having a chunk of his skull the size of 4 side by side fingers where the skull bone was missing and you could see into his brain and the chunk of brain that was blown out. He ended up dying but he somehow survived for almost 5 months after that and died in a military hospital back in the US during one of several brain surgeries and skull reconstructions. Also, Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell tells the story in his book and Movie Lone Survivor about one of the Seals on his team that was also his best friend and how he was shot in the head during that ambush by the Taliban and survived the first headshot despite having a large part of the back of his brains blown out. Not only did he not die instantly, he somehow kept fighting back for almost 25 minutes in a gun battle until he was shot in the head yet again.The human body is absolutely amazing. Some people are able to absorb obscene amounts of physical trauma that would kill most other people instantly. The best example of this is that Navy Seal who is the biggest badass I have ever heard of. Despite initially being shot 10 times he killed 2 Al Qaeda fighters during a raid on an enemy compound in Iraq. After he had killed those two a hidden one used a grenade to blow him up. He awoke after the grenade had knocked him out and got shot 17 more times. He then still killed the last 2 terrorists despite having been shot 27 times AND blown up by a grenade he WALKED hims of to the medevac helicopter with the body of one of his teammates. Think about surviving the shrapnel and blast wounds of a grenade that goes off next to you. Then somehow try to contemplate being shot all over 27 times and being able to WALK yourself out to the medical helicopter.

My mother was bipolar back when it was called manic/depression. She went through life untreated. She married a great man, my father, who treated her like a queen. Since my father was a truck driver, he never saw the phases where she doled out corporal punishment. So I understand what those around this ladies' family went through. I am glad she received treatment.

Huh...my Dad was suicidal manic depressive, and untreated until he moved out and married a nurse. He also doled out physical and mental abuse....odd though, if Payne is your real last name, as that's also his/mine. *Side note: He eventually went into being a trucker.

The door confuses me. So at 10:54, the door opens AND closes. This is when he throws out the phone and she goes out. Her app shows no more movement after this, so it's likely (but not certain) that she died around this time. She could have left her phone and bottle out there at that time. Jeff's story is that he stayed inside when the door closed, and went to bed. His phone app supports this, since there was no movement between 11:10 and 5:12. At 5:12 he hears sirens, grabs his phone and gets up. He finds the door open and closes it at 5:12. The court seems to think that he went outside with her at 10:54 and put his phone down outside at 11:10. He stayed outside for almost 3 hours before opening the door at 1:51, leaving it open. At this time he could have moved in and out to clean up, stage the scene or whatever. He did not touch his phone which was laying still outside until 5:12 when the police was showing up, when he hurried outside to grab it, closing the door behind him. Based on the information in this video, I think the evidence against him is weak and contradictory. It sounds like the bottle has not been confirmed as a murder weapon, and the height argument sounds weak if they don't have a specific scenario to consider it against.

Depends on how you look at it! - 10:45 pm, Kathleen's movements begin 10:54 pm, door is opened, Kathleen's final movement (she may have been attacked by Jeff instantly when outside), he walks back inside and the door is closed 11:03 pm, after washing up, Jeff picks up his phone (which he didn't have on him prior); he then heads to bed 11:10 pm, Jeff puts his phone down in bed. 01:51 am, Jeff leaves his phone untouched, opens door to make it look like Kat walked out to get her phone and died on the way 05:12 am, Jeff picks his phone up and proceeds to close the door when a witness/the police show up. I'm honestly down the middle on this one, but the security/phone data can be used both ways!

@@CoffeehouseCrime That sounds like a very planned and odd way of doing when the theory seems to be that he did it in an alcohol-fueled rage or blackout, not a planned murder. My problem with this case is that everything seems unlikely in one way or another! Combined the fact that Jeff didn't take the plea deal that would have made him a free man, I can't help but lean towards the accident theory. Thank you for another respectful and thorough episode! I have never heard of this couple before, but I can imagine how it's been covered in the media.

Bipolar and alcohol is a no go, I have seen what unexplained antics and destructable behaviour to themselves occur. They were both under the influence of alcohol, he was the catalyst for what transpired however if he had unintentionally caused her accident as educated as he was, he would have taken the plea deal as he knew he would be the prime suspect. Excellent again Adrian, your compassion and digntity with this case. This one is tough as their daughter has suffered the most and her live is destroyed. Illness + alcolhol + social media 😪😪 what a tragedy. Thanks Adrian, you rock 🌠☺

I was a cop for 34 years I’ve dealt with mental illness especially Bi Polar disorder. First if she had Bi polar disorder she should have never drank. Just out of this video I can pick 5 or even 10 things discussed showing he didn’t do it. There is no way. No struggle in the house. An intoxicated bi polar lady could have through herself on the ground or bottle. She could have struck her self in the head. Drinking and the mental illness she would not have felt the pain. She was probably getting attention from him it went to far. He had been drinking so he fell into a deep sleep and never heard her outside. I dont think he did it. The only thing he or she did she should have never dranked. That is a depressant and makes her illness worse. I say the dude needs to be out of prison and raise his daughter. She done her own business even if accepted by him she craved attention. I think she was a good person she had her issues but not drinking and when she wasn’t having an episode they wer happy.

Thanks for not demonising her just because she had only fans. Its quite clear that from this information, it was something they both were ok with and enjoyed. I can't stand it when people demonise things and make assumptions without looking at the situation objectively. I am personally not a cam girl or only fans user/creator, but just because you are, shouldn't mean you're assumed a promiscuous person or a cheat on your partner. As there are I believe a range of reasons some people do it, sometimes to feel better about themselves or just because. Whatever their reasons, sex/porn workers and those in that genre industry don't deserve to be dehumanised for it. So, I just wanted to say thank you. I'm a bit over the media and even other content creators just blasting these people for their choice of activity or job or status. Can we just stick to judging based on people's actual actions?

I think the head wound is the only piece of evidence that holds any real weight. Nobody could hit themself in the head with a liquor bottle hard enough to kill them in one blow. The pools of blood and the fingerprints are also really specific. There's only one reason to hold a bottle downward by the neck and that's to crack somebody with it. I believe he did it, but as Adrian said, it was not premeditated and didn't display any true brutality like other cases.

He was offered a plea deal that was basically admission of guilt, time served and boom, he's out of prison. Nobody wants to admit to something they didn't do, but given the evidence against him, I would have strongly urged him to take that deal.

You're right, this is a tough one to call. I can see it happening either way which is why I wonder why he was convicted. You are not suppose to convict if there is reasonable doubt and I believe there was plenty of reasonable doubt. I also believe if he did do it, prison or not, he will suffer to the end of his days for what he did to the love of his life.

Unfortunately a lot of Jury cases convict without the prosecution seemingly reaching the standards of "beyond a reasonable doubt". Some you're left questioning if it even met the civil standard of "on the balance of probabilities"

Exactly what I was going to post. I don't think I would have found him guilty, but that is just from what was in this video. I wonder if the Prosecution managed to prove their case, or if the jury defaulted to " no one else to blame." Which would be a miscarr6of justice as the defense is not required to prove innocence or offer a reasonable alternative

What really bothers me is some of the gaps in the DNA evidence like was mentioned @ 21:36 I see a lot of people concluding he must have done this in a drunken state but I’m wondering how someone ends a life whilst inebriated and doesn’t leave a more substantial amount of damning clues behind in the process. I’m usually one to jump on the spouse doing it but I have a reasonable amount of doubt, especially because that plea deal was so favourable. Incredibly tough call.

I think the one aspect that may not have gotten enough attention is her bipolar disorder. Medication and alcohol can lead to some very dangerous situations. Often bipolar in in its manic state express itself in impulsive behavior, specifically poor choices of sexual inhibition. I wouldn't rule out accidental death as she was quite hyper at times which could have caused her death. Most importantly I don't think there was enough evidence to charge him with murder let alone find him guilty.
