Then again, it is hard to look for people who are legally not even there, have no officially known home or work addressess, probably no known phone numbers, no known local family, etc. I'm not saying the police did everything great, but think about how you would look for someone if they were lost. Go to their home to check on them. Go to their workplace and check if they came in or not. Look for their families and friends. Any other place, like school or gyms/official clubs they regularly attended. Illegal residents are much harder to find. Like here people could find me in a million ways, I have a car insurance, a job, I regularly take my dog to her vet, etc. I'm easy to follow, because the things I do are regularly documented in a way police could search back and look up. But without any of those?

Not enough people realize that sending your kid to fancy schools and paying for everything doesn’t equate to love. I did some more reading on this case and it appears Rurik had a total falling out with his mother after he chose a career path that she didn’t approve of. I'm really glad you are finally covering a Hong Kong case! I live in Hong Kong for about almost 3 years and this is still one of the safest countries fro me. Although, I want to point out that the domestic helpers do not just work for a family and they leave afterwards. The helpers actually live with the family most of the times and share room with the kids, they are provided very less privacy and their working hours never end. They have only got one day off per week, no holidays whatsoever unless the family is nice enough to provide them that.

Oh dear ... as someone who is a Hongkonger through & through, I will say that if Domestic Helpers are not getting any holidays, that is absolutely against the law. I think what's important is that they know their rights, because the laws are in place - and enforced! Punishments can also be quite harsh. Unfortunately, it is human nature that people take advantage ... which is why it is important to know your employment rights.

@@AuditClerk hk labour laws are not very good at protecting workers, no max weekly hour-load and only one required day off per 7 days. annual paid leave is also a very rare benefit not many get. i think while there might be laws in place , these people probably work in informal conditions, a lot of them probably don't have work visas and just renew their tourists visa by taking the ferry to macau or mainland china, no written co tract and have little knowledge of whatever protection they might be entitled to. its very common not only in hk for immigrant workers to be treated like this and work illegally.

I am touched by your end note on this video. The stark comparison between Rurik and his victims does put this crime in a much harsher and heartbreaking perspective. I'm from Hong Kong and am well aware about how terribly abused some domestic helpers are. My family employs a lady as well - she lives in our house like a lot of other domestic workers, but we do our absolute best to pay and treat her well. But I've heard and watched so many horror stories of them being screamed at, stuff being thrown at them, having to live in a closet sized room the literal size of their bed... I walked into the kitchen one night when I was sleeping over at a friend's house and the door of what I thought was the pantry slid open and their domestic helper stepped out. I was shocked - it was a literal pantry closet. There needs to be better regulations for the treatment of these women, but unfortunately the police here don't care, and because a lot of these women come in illegally they're unable to even keep track. I hope things get better for them, thank you Adrian for taking time to comment on this issue.

What? There may be a nearly ubiquitous amount of ways that people's actions can be retrospectively found out with certainty, but ever notice that none of these things actually tend to lead to them being caught in like 80%-90% of cases? Plus, these are all biased obviously by covering cases where someone was caught. There are more, proportionally speaking, of cases that are not ever solved, nor the person responsible caught. I mean even assuming for a moment that all the people convicted of a homicide are in fact the actual person who did it [which we know with complete certainty is not true, but let's assume it is,] that still means there is a roughly 50/50 chance of getting away with it. Which only increases [by exactly how much I wouldn't be able to speculate on,] once you narrow it down solely to those who commit them with the intention of getting away with it... i.e. excluding all the people who turn themselves in for it in whatever particular way, people who dispose of bodies instead of keeping them around in the place they are staying in, etc... And of course all that has a caveat of restricting what is included in "homicide" numbers because in any given there ranges between [at least officially,] around 1/4 of these intentional taking of life to many multiples of this type of intentional taking of life by things that people do not criticize [unless the people involved are not liked by the particular person in question,] that are deemed "conflicts" by governments themselves against external people. They are also "homicides," but they are the type people tend to support... or at least large majorities of people do.

It entails the case of Oscar Pistorius, the internationally known paralympic athlete, who ended the life of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on the night of Valentine's Day 2013. His court case was nationally televised, but there are still debates among locals whether the act of ending Reeva's life was intentional, or a sincere mistake. There is a lot about the incident that raises questions. I would love to see your analysis of the case, and the inputs from your subscribers. Thanks for the contribution you make to our lives.
