Thank you I appreciate the feedback! I have recently written similar articles for Your Dog Magazine. This month (Oct cover) is all about recall!! The following five months are based on life in the park with exercises and training games.

Lovely dog, good simple method just needs client patience. I also teach checking in and clicking for dog offering it progressing to long line and off lead but the whistle is good, clients like 'things' to do :)

Thank you. Yes. Always better to train individually. After getting each tuned to the whistle, and you reintroduce them, you will still have to train a little more. You can also introduce a little competition and reward the first dog back! 👍🏻

I'mbvhopeful this technique will work with my 15 month. He has never had a recall problem but we recently moved to a farmhouse and discovered he loves to chase tractors and wonders off to the nearby plough fields. He comes home eventually but after he has had swim in the ponds and roll around first! I will order one of those whistles recommended for sure too.

This is a superb video. Will definitely give it a go for our 7mo springador. Struggling a little with voice commands as we have 3 children so is naturally quite alot of noise all at one time. Would you do this through out the day starting out with the toot indoors or just every now and then? Thanks.

Thank you. I appreciate your comments. Yes, start in the house but process to garden...do it as much as you can. Try not to tip off the dog though. Also, try and get the food to the dog within about 5 seconds. You want to make the association very, very clear and so consistent it becomes a near reflex. Pip>food. Pip>food. Pip>food etc.

A lot may depend on the dogs prey drive . We have a pointer, good recall but he chased a deer the other day. Went missing for nearly 30 mins which felt like an eternity

I really like your video - not just because you have a Toller! Is he a Decoymans? :) I have a young Toller myself and although I have introduced her to the whistle, I didn't train it properly, so I'm in the process of teaching it again with a new whistle tone and 'pip pattern.' Love the way you teach recall, it's the same way that I have recently learned and I wouldn't teach it any other way now! Also love the advice you give about touching collar or harness - the only little thing that I would add if it were me (sorry, I know you didn't ask for feedback so take it with whatever size pinch of salt you like!) is that the touching of the collar/harness should really be before you feed if you're conditioning it properly and ensuring the dog knows what you're doing. But thank you!
@tonycruse3648
@tonycruse3648 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenny, yes he is a Decoymans. :) Glad you likes the video. You can re-condition the whistle and as you rightly said, change the the pip patters or introduce a a vague tune. Incidentally I have a book out which may help you and your Toller for many issues. It's called '101 Doggy Dilemmas' and is doing really well on Amazon with over twenty five-star reviews.

Fantastic video, thank you greatly. We are introducing this to our 5 month old puppy and we've also read to associate good things with the whistle and to start we could use her dog food at feeding time. Now, she already sits and waits until released verbally to eat her food. Would we make her wait as normal, or would we make her wait, whistle and then release? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for posting. I have tried this but I find that as soon as my dog is off the lead he is far too interested in getting his own rewards and my treats are only second best, so he fails to come to the whistle. This happens even when I take him to a quiet park early in the morning when there is nobody around, simply because he finds great enjoyment in following scents, chasing birds, etc. WHAT THEN?
@tonycruse3648
@tonycruse3648 9 жыл бұрын
+lamegalectora Ensure the pip produces a near-reflex head turn from him. Go back to week two. And when you get to week three, don't allow him off the longline until you start getting that lookback and return. Use his breakfast in the park after the pip of the whistle. If he likes chasing toys, you can pip and whip out a toy for him to chase. The important factor is when he does return to you, even from a few paces away, touch his collar, reward and release him back to his chosen fun (if safe to do so). He will learn that most of the time, if he returns to you his chosen rewards will not always end. Do this many times during a walk. Hope that helps.

Thank you, very helpful indeed! I am now starting with stage 4, and I get mostly good results, BUT sometimes my dog appears not to hear the whistle (when he is very concentrated on a scent, he is a hound). What shall I do then? Keep blowing the whistle? Go back to stage 3 and pop on his lead to draw his attention? Is it that I have not imprinted it strongly enough? It works well when he is not lost in his own world of scent. THANK YOU
@CrueLoaf
@CrueLoaf 9 жыл бұрын
+lamegalectora If you have blown about five pips and he is ignoring. Stop pipping, if it is safe enough, wait until he looks up and re-pip. Or go and get him. It is normal and called 'environmental drift' and happens occasionally when the environment trumps the whistle. It's almost like his ears have shut down. :) Plus his instinctual hard-wired behaviour kicks in. With a dog that chases, you have about a five second window to pip. 100% recall is practically impossible with an happy and enthusiastic dog. Aim for 90% and most people will get 70%. You are going to get the best possible recall using this technique. Tony

I personally would use treats for every recall. Once it is fairly reliable you can switch to a favourite toy or tennis ball but only if your dog, truly loves the toy or ball. You are competing with the environment and other dogs so it is worth making the rewards high value.

I've been trying to teach myself to wolf whistle for a year and finally given up, and bought a shepherd's whistle to do this with. How many times a day/what session lengths would you recommend? Our dog is a 8month BC/Toller mix and has quite the learning capabilities. I will definitely just add this in throughout the day, but I'm thinking of maybe adding a session a day?

I train recall by whistling--- the key is no repeating command as backgound noise like the first part of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJOuhn9ne7afqtU Later I teach a silent recall...if I stop, my lab checks in: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGHIaWCvmbSSY6s I do not use a leash or long line up here in Alaska.

Tony -- I hope you still check this. I am going to try this as my dog has huge recall problems. Can you let me know where to get this whistle, or will any dog whistle work. I only have a regular sports whistle at present. Will that work or should I only start when I can get a "gunner" whistle (is that what you called it?). I live in the states and I haven't seen a whistle like that one.

Good question. An Acme Gundog whistle is ideal. Any frequency but make a note of the frequency, in case you loose it. They are fab whistles and come in a variety of colours. I've also recently discovered a long line made by Julius-K9. Very soft for the hands. Choose a 10m line though.

Great video. A question though. Do you always have to reward the dog/puppy even when it's a learned behaviour after training ?? Or once learned as an adult will it be there for life?
@tonycruse3648
@tonycruse3648 9 жыл бұрын
Hiya. Good question. No, you can substitute the food treats or the toy for a 'free life reward'. That is being released to go back to what you called the dog way from and maybe adding some fuss and attention. Plenty more rewards out there! ;) It doesn't harm to reinforce it once in a while with food though, some folks feed their dogs meals in this way which could be considered better than given it to them for nothing (it disappears in 30 seconds in a food bowl). See the food as a payment…if you like it…pay up! Dog's don't usually work for free..

Matt Neumann short but frequent sessions are best. Training can be done easily during a walk or a park trip. Basically, a dog is always learning so little things can be added. Doesn’t have to be a chore. 😉

@CrueLoaf
@CrueLoaf 5 жыл бұрын
Once it becomes reliable you can start fading the treats and giving intermittently. Swap rewards to a toy or simply praise and allow the dog back to what you called him away from. It must always be rewarding for the dog though, dog must enjoy returning! :)

Tony Cruse My 2 dogs are in the third week of this recall response training using this simple and effective video. The results so far have been outstanding and I am thoroughly impressed with my dogs. I have been using lean hamburger meat and hotdogs as rewards. My question is, when they are fully trained can I switch back to my regular dog treats? Will they get bored of the treats and ignore the whistle? I don't plan on carrying hotdogs and hamburgers everywhere, so what happens if they respond to the whistle and get nothing but verbal praise?
@tonycruse3648
@tonycruse3648 9 жыл бұрын
Patrick Roberts Hi Patrick, Once you get a reliable quick recall as close to 100% as possible (no recall is 100%), you can start being random. A piece of hotdog, a piece of your dog's usual meal (dry food is great for this). Many of my customers feed their dogs in this way. Breakfast in the park after each recall. Be random and with multi dogs…you can reward the first one back. Create a bit of competition. Other rewards can be a) simply allowing the dogs back from what you called them away from. b) having a brief game with a toy or c) blow the whistle, turn and run in the other direction…allow the dogs to chase you. After the third week you can start being random, occasionally give loads of praise and release them back. Always touch their collars before you release them back…at some point you'd obviously clip the lead back on but you'd need to hold the collar to do that. Start mixing it up now and have fun!

So after the dog has had full training do you still have to reward him with a treat every time you call him with the whistle?
@tonycruse3648
@tonycruse3648 9 жыл бұрын
Jazmin Villalobos It depends on how highly you value the recall. You could whistle him away from a safe distraction (smelly patch of grass or friendly dog?), touch his collar and send him back to the distraction. It's a free reward! But every now and again you may need to re-condition the whistle using tasty food if necessary. One morning a week take your dog's breakfast with you, for example. I was at a conference recently and it was thought that a food reward for one in every three recalls was a good ratio. For the other two...lots of fuss and allow the dog to return from what you called him from (if appropriate).
