As an INTJ with ENTJ and ENFJ parents, this explains why when I was younger I was always a thrill seeker. When I got to college, I immediately noticed I started planning more long term and became more serious and more introverted. I never had the opportunity to be a planner of my own life until my late teens and it really showed. I am now much more comfortable being myself because I am in control of my own life.

Sometimes when you can feel TOO MUCH of a function in the room, you just naturally switch over to the other style to make sure there’s balance. I do that all the time in my marriage, because the Se/Ne gets out of control and SOMEBODY needs to sort out the chaos and get some control.

Also I have one close friend who I think is ESTJ. Watching this video made me think about our interactions in the past where sometimes she would be 'in-command' on our group of friends but there's also time when she's not so I let my self to be 'in-command'. But I doubt she's an infp because she had easier time making acquaintance everywhere, making schedule for herself, going to the gym, etc lol.

I love being both incorrect & correct because in your initial subjective judgment you were correct. This is why it is so important to discuss everyone’s results/feedback in related & unrelated fields. It reminds me of times when I was failed/ruled out in the corporate world and then discover that I was in fact correct in my result...at the time. Life and most of everything is a learning process, and it is frustrating that majority of problems will not be interpreted/handled in this manner. During your exploration of discovering X’s type (forgot her name so going with ‘X’) you explained your piece of the puzzle very well, discussed another observers result, and then discovered the underlying issue & actual type through teamwork and collaboration. That’s where us ENTP’s truly excel. Grreat video!

that would be my subconscious instead of shadow. I'm an ENTP like him. I'm really not sure. It's just a hypothesis I've been developing since learning more from Chase. But I definitely wasn't myself because I wasn't accepted for who I was and was trying to be who others wanted me to be. But I was very into tradition and what a person should do. I think it helped me develop my resiliency but I made some poor life choices based off of a side that wasn't really me.

Glad you mistyped her, so I could learn a lot from this video! In fact, because of those 'social masks', I've always asked myself if I could ever figure out exactly the types of others. I'm an introvert responding and I change a lot my interaction style as a way to overcome my shyness! So fear and worries can make a person shift to subconscious or unconscious, but when interacting with others, this shift depends on which side best fit the situation??

This is so true this is why I have a hard time deciding type because I don't know which ego people have and also I see peoples shadow as prevailing usually as a clue but also I see peoples' subconscious as their ego so I was wrong about a couple variables while typing...have you ever had that happen where someone's thinks their ego but its actually their subconsious? This is actually the first argument for "peer review" that's ever convinced me of the significance of it! Wow I really need an ENTP in my life if I am not one myself...to wake me up in a way I understand using all the variables! Thanks for sharing this 👍

This explains the funny dynamic that goes on between me with an ENTJ I know. I noticed that we often seem to shift roles. I go into my ENTJ shadow and she acts more like an INTP. It is more tiring to be "in charge," but as long as she doesn't mind, I guess it's OK.

This idea of changing one's personality type in order to survive.... I 100% relate to that. That's my birth-family. That's every job I've ever been in. That's various groups of friends that have come and gone over the years. Maybe this is why it's been difficult for me to figure out my type. But now I've been in hermit mode over the past 10 years or so... So maybe it'll gradually get easier to "find myself" or whatever.

Interestingly enough, a day before watching this I (INTJ) met up with a long-time friend I had pegged as an ENTP. I presented Type to him, and in the midst of the conversation I willed myself into my ENTP Shadow. It was fascinating seeing him transition into INTJ in real-time, his facial expression began looking very much like my usual one. It's funny because he constantly teases me for looking scary and intense to others. This confirmed my assessment, plus what you said in this video. Thank you once again for the work.

Just stumbled across this video. Thank you so much for this explanation. While in grade school, I was typed as an INFP and felt uncomfortable in my own skin. Turns out this is because my father is an ENFJ, and at the time I was dealing with very low self-esteem and a desire for acceptance. I felt so liberated when I began having more interactions with others through high school and college. Recently, I've had a few interactions where I felt strange coming out of some 1-on-1 interactions where I felt awkward and, again, not myself. This is because those few people, I've concluded with help from the grid, are also ENFJs. I just adjusted to my shadow type to keep social harmony. I was giving myself crap for it up until now. I just so happen to be surrounded by other ENFJs and, as it's difficult to identify one's own type, was shocked to find they, too, were ENFJs when they tested. This really makes sense of so many of my relationships and interactions, so thanks again!

When I first did the test in highschool I got ENTP. I’ve gotten suspended, arrested and did illegal shit then...It made sense because I was never organized or a planner, also raised in a feeler household. I never did homework and would go out with friends all the time and my mini dream was to have a pack/squad of friends since I’d always been alone. I guess I never wanted to see myself as an introvert or a judger. It wasn’t until grade 7 that I wasn’t so shy so I reveled in it and eventually got overwhelmed with socializing every time I’ve tried. Now I’m 21 years old. Cut off friends, haven’t gone out in more than a year. Started uni and tried to go hard even with insomnia, started planning. Got diagnosed for ADHD, decided to drop out of uni as it is boring for me but maybe I’ll come back. My Ni is telling me to live life and move out. Now I’m doing door to door sales and trying to do music( very hard for me to learn but fun for me to create music) When I first saw the INTJ description I thought it was for judgy rigid overtly logical people. Looking at socionics I might be Ni-Fi subset of INTJ, since I relate to most INTJs to a certain extent but most of them are in something technical. Ever since reading I’m INTJ I try not to be too serious, and not be in my head too much. It’s weird but I’ve felt the 4 sides of my mind before not to mention that my third eye opened and I have been into spirituality which is for INFJs... Not only that but my enneagram is type 8-7 when most INTJs are type 5 So trying to make sense is what I’m still trying to do. P.S so many ideas and thoughts I’m gonna have to make a list.

I talk fast. I talk loud. I am informative saying a lot about what I am talking about. I am more concerned about how I feel. I like having shared experiences. I speak up when I see injustice. I write songs about real life situations. I paint real life like trees and I love to live in the moment when I am happy. If I am depressed, I ruminate about the past. I can also be happy when getting nostalgic about my childhood growing up in the 1980s and 1990s. I don't stand for bs when in my superego. I don't listen to other people's thoughts when in my superego. I will be so sure of what is true and false in this world when in my superego. I will be informative most of the time. I always wanted to be smarter at algebra, geometry and calculus. I am terrible at remembering things in my ego. I hate being disrespected. I used to watch a lot of conspiracy videos out of curiosity and wanting to know if I am just paranoid about this world. I don't watch conspiracy videos as much as I used to because I don't really care about that stuff anymore.

Man, I had just thought about this the other day! And I've been there, as well! More often than not, I can not make sense of other ENFJs. Because it is the unconscious that both of us are looking for. And it is the conscious, that our unconscious is looking for. This puts up a distance naturally. I see them acting outwardly, the inner world that it's coming from is hard to see. That being said, I have worked alongside quite a few of them in recent times. And it gets us somewhere, as long as we look in the same forward direction together, not at each other. My first ever, letter based, test result was INFP. I disregarded that one rather quickly, as soon as it came to INFP "shyness from attention". Now, there's moments at which I do feel being closest to my unconscious, feeling like "this is how being an INFP would feel". And that is whenever other ENFJs take the social lead around me, while I have nothing to say, or they turn directly towards me. I also notice myself slipping into ISTP mode around some of my SJ family members on a regular basis, that makes some sense...

I am an INTJ (I think? After watching this lol) and my mom seems like a textbook ENTJ. I am very quiet among my friends and I usually speak when spoken to and I'm very finish oriented. I feel like I have to jump in a more extraverted state of mind when I am around them so they don't get worried. I'll start conversations and talk to them, but I never feel totally "comfortable". I struggled with the same issue. It would be cool if you just held private sessions to talk to people, ask questions, and type them 😆 I keep getting INFJ but I think I was having trouble typing myself because the explanation of Affiliate vs. Pragmatic and Systematic vs. Interest. Trauma will definitely alter things too. You could always just film people talking on camera answering questions so they are not influenced by other types. Questions would have to be answered in the form of “what have you actually DONE in certain situations?” and what are the patterns of those actions.

You mentioned that many people often get mistyped as an INTJ, so as an INTJ myself I´ve always been unsure if my typing is correct. I´ve known about MBTI for over 3 years and I have watched all your videos up to this one and a little more (did not watch em all in order). So I´m constently worried that I´ve got my type wrong because I´ve gone so deep into the details about it. I can really see myself as an INTJ and don´t think any other type fits. I wonder if this worry comes from Ne Nemesis and that I really test my truth because of Ti trickster. Some further "proofs" are that I have an extream fear of performing to others and stagefrigth. Been learning Guitar for some time and am quite good, but I still can´t think of playing in front of others. Anyway, just wanted to write this out to see if you have anythig to add, cause no matter how deep I go in my mind, I still have this little angging feeling of insecureness.
@poppystils9746 жыл бұрын
So strange you mention type transference because as an INFJ I wasn't gelling with my ENFJ gf, my logical mind was saying that we're not compatible yet my feelings got attached and I found myself acting like an ENFP around her and that's the me that she liked and I was almost ashamed of just being myself, my ego. Relationship ended and I sort of came to the conclusion that my shadow was attached to her while my Ego wasn't and the two were and still are in conflict about it. Odd but I defo think there's some truth because to this day I cannot logically see what I liked about her and yet my feelings are still into her. Maybe there's something to this and needs exploring more.

Very fascinating video!! This exact same scenario I believe played out often with my dad and I. I believe we are both the same type. We both liked to debate and we had great conversations. We both liked to talk A LOT and for hours about politics and philosophy... I believe we took turns leading the conversation and both developed our shadow. I believe we are both ENTP and took turns developing our INTJ shadow. When I took MBTI 2xs in a couple months period, I typed as an INTJ almost INFJ (53/47%). As a child, I learned to stay in my shadow INTJ because my ENTP dad had a hard time being accepted in my family so I changed like a chameleon to be more acceptable to my affiliative family being pragmatic like my dad. I still often wear my “mask” as well and slip in my ENTP once in a while just to slip in some chaos with my family... it’s kinda fun to slid in and out of ego and shadow... lol 😂 Also I re-typed myself on your website and got (ESTP) at first and after listening had concluded that was not quite accurate and took it a second time and got an ENTP which makes sense with my INTJ being my shadow. Also I listened to the ESTP/ENTP difference video of yours. So here’s another ENTP C S Joseph follower. Also I feel strongly that I am a firm Ti/Fe and Ne/Si user as well. The Ti/Fe is more obvious for me to see because I don’t much think or care about my own feelings but I think of others more and have a more intimate relationship with my thoughts than feelings.

Amazing! So...would you say you have noticed many ENFJ’s jumping to being Informative rather than Direct out of fear or possibly because they may have been conditioned to think telling someone to do something (possibly against their will) equals a bad experience for that person?

It's the "sass." And your love of books & mentoring. Etc.... Every time you say you're an ENTP, you project the same vibe as the DJ (who temporarily replaced Robin Williams character) in Good Morning Vietnam did.. Every single time he tried to crack a joke. I think that this question could have been answered in the video but I am still unsure/confused. Anyways, how do you figure out what is primary and secondary and which side of the mind is your ego? In my personal experience, I behave in a responding based way when I am at work and then I behave in an initiating based way when I am with family/friends. This variation is also happening with the other factors. What I just described is consistently happening and my behavior is constantly adapting based on who I am with and what would be most convenient for the environment. I am aware that it is probably due to transitions to the other side of the mind but I am not sure which persona is my actual ego. Thank you.

Ive found I can type other infps pretty easy sometimes but there are 2 infps I could not figure out the type of for a while. Maybe try and see if you’re going into your own unconscious around them. One reason I can type other infps easier is because Fi hero can be a lot more noticeable to me then something like Si hero. I can tell generally when someone uses Si but it’s harder to tell if they’re Si hero sometimes. Comparatively Fi hero is pretty noticeable because a lot of statements made by Fi hero sound the same regardless of the person. One challenge an infp or any behind the scenes type poses is that they tend to act more direct if they aren’t comfortable instead of informative

On the internet I’ve noticed that there are a statistically impossible amount of people claiming to be an INTJ, myself included. In light of this, there’re a few things I would like to ask. Is it incredibly common that ENTPs are typed as INTJs, or that a great amount of other types are typed as INTJ? I also wanted your opinion on something I’ve noticed about myself, in reviewing your season 16- everything about the cognitive functions and attitudes attributed to the INTJ seem true for me, with the exception of the thinking function. I honestly couldn’t possibly care less what credentials a person has to their name; in my mind, credibly comes from consistently accurate information. I have always considered myself to be incredibly logically sound, and while I enjoy studying theoretical ideas, I will not entertain a thought until I am sure that it is possible. Is this easily explained, or should I look further into what type I truly am? I’m sorry for the incredibly long comment, I have too many questions for my own good.

you may care less for others with credentials, but INTJs make it a priority for themselves, my point still stands.

An acting INTJ (ENTP) would come off differently than an actual INTJ though, right? Is there a "weirdness" trait or something we can look for when someone is not in their EGO?

Thanks again for the fabulous content ! It actually explained quite a few doubts of mine about typing (in that the fact that one I'm in a extraverted situation quite often I'm introverted(as in my subconcious IRC is more dominant) unless I find someone whom I know and like to talk to/ start feeling comfortable in the specific environment( e.g. choir). I even got a comment from my teacher that when I am at class I seem very secretive about my life and a bit cut off from the rest Xd. Well once aggain thanks!

Also quick question, you mentioned that the subconscious is the anima animus but didn't Jung say that you have to go through the shadow to get to the anima animus? Does that mean the way to the subconscious is through the unconscious? I thought it was through the inferior function?
@CSJoseph6 жыл бұрын
the answer is yes, it is through the inferior function. Jung was actually incorrect about that.

Its funny you mention the difficulty typing your shadow. I'm generally able to spot another INTJ easily enough, body language and the death stare are often dead give away's.(Helps that I grew up around other INTJ's with both my grandfather and uncle both being INTJ's as well) ENTP's on the other hand I've generally had some issues typing you guys. Wasn't until I learned ENTP body langue and the fact that you do have some commonality in voice and tenor . I'm just starting to nail it down some what.

Loved the vid...please if you will. The Chinese say “yang” like “yawn”. Add an “n” where the “w” is and the “g” where the “n” is!

I mistyped my boyfriend as an ESTP instead of an ISTP and it took me 2 months to figure it out 😂 I always felt like something was off 😅 I watched the Eminem typing video and that’s when I finally realized! And now I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen again 🙃

C.S.Joseph I think the yin-yang equilibrium can also be very transient during the conversation, as in the person in the yang position can then switch places with the yin person. I think so since when I (IIM - ego , DRM - unconcious ) talk with friends that also have the same temperaments in their ego(&unconcious ) we (at least I) end up changing between IIM and DRM depending on whether I'm initiating (speaking atm. ) or responding( thinking about what my friend is saying). I also think a more transient equilibrum is prevalent when there's a similiar level of growth in the egos(as in the case of 2 ppl being forced to go into their unconcious to be a bit more accepted in their families/deal with a sotuation) and when neither have a more specific goal with this social manipulation (which is the case when we talk about abstract ideas). Though it's my hipothesis (didn't have a chance to check it except for when talking with my friends), I think that if it is true / plausible, it's worth mentioning so that ppl won't start assuming that all social interactions are stagnant when they are introvertive/ one on one.

You are honest looking for truth. You are humble admitting lowliness of mind, admitting that this is an area you are consciously trying to improve. Are you hungry for truth? It seems that you are. You seem to be searching for the human core and wanting to better the world with what you have found..... can we talk over coffee? I live in Chico and would drive to where you are to have a one on one talk.

20:20 is it also a bit the effect of social moratorium (which you mentioned in season 2 bonus episode)?

Cool video! Does the cognitive transition to the shadow only happen when dealing with the same type as the ego or can it be very incompatible types in general? - for instance would a cognitive transition to the shadow happen in a difficult family with incompatible types - but none have the same type as your true ego

this same thing happened to me yesterday so im glad i found this. I spent almost two hours trying to type my friend I just cant believe I didn't see it. I kept making comments about how we seemed to have a few functions in common "that's why we're so compatible haha" Then I realized wait could it be possible she's an infj too?? Turned out she is... At least i think i typed her correctly I hope i did.

What would the compatibility be for the same types but one is in their unconscious ( like 2 ENTPs but one is in their INTJ shadow while the other one is in their ego) would they be compatible but the stress of being in their unconscious make the ENTP transitioning to get away or they still would be incompatible?
@chadherbert186 жыл бұрын
Lol, I’ve typed a bunch of INTJs and I kept getting them wrong because of this... I started thinking of it as a matter of tuning. Instead of seeing the big differences, I would compare the difference between me and them to others and them and that let me guess a little better - lol...

Do we need a mentor to find out our type? How would a person without a mentor find their type? Sometimes (often) a mentor is critical to self discovery. And you are certainly a sort of a mentor. Curious about your answer.
