About a guy with weird noise when driving in reverse - he might have a loose plastic wheel arc cover. I had such an issue recently. It detached from the front bumper undercover, so a part was touching the front wheel. When driving forward, it made some sound, but quietly, when in reverse - it got stuck in tyre ribs and made a similar fast clap-clap-clap noise

Or it is a chipped gear tooth on the reverse gear cluster. Slammed into reverse a few times too many, as there is no synchromesh on those gears.

Or a broken engine mount. Had a similar noise from an engine fan hitting a cowling once. Got worse as I eased the clutch out.

It’s a mk3 VW. My guess is the axle or the reverse gear.

There's a BIG difference between being able to BUY a car, and being able to AFFORD/KEEP a car. Often times is the more expensive cars in the worst shape. They typically cost the most to maintain. It's all they can do to pay the $1200 car payment every month. No money left over for maintenance costs

You're right. A friend of mine bought rather expensive pickups and refused to spend the money to change oil. He had the money, just wouldn't. And bought a hot tub but wouldn't put in any chemicals so he had a hot tub with green and black stuff growing in it.

After working on cars for 40 years it amazes me how people drive them til they drop. Then the repair bill is much greater than if they had just maintained it and they decline repairs. Idiots will be idiots.

As a customer for many years... Prices are too damn high. .mechanic wanted to charge me $500 to change the spark plugs in a 1990 Ford Ranger. The book said 5 hours and some of the engine would have to be disassembled. I did it my self in 30 minutes and didn't have disassemble anything.

i worked in an auto parts place that did repairs and state inspections in the '80's and saw peoples vehicles like the tires /brakes worn out and when you inform them what they need they say NO REPAIRS-we had several times that the state inspection police unit would stop people on the street,inspect the vehicles,find bald tires/brakes etc and look at the new stickers,determine that the vehicle needs repairs and scrapes the stickers off and has the vehicle towed away,2 months later we got sued by the cars owners because he said that we were lying and he wants us to put the new stickers on and refund him the money spent for towing,etc-the judge called a recess and went out to see the vehicle at the tow lot with another mechanic-after the mechanic inspected the car he told us everything that we put on the repair order is correct and until he gets the repairs done he won't release the vehicle plus he has to pay $500 in fines to the court and wants the vehicle re-inspected at a place of the courts choosing to insure that it was fixed correctly,we never saw that customer and his vehicle again

It was the same on the front drive shaft too. We are a jeep specialty shop and always recommend Adams driveshafts for all of our jeep customers when they need it. Unfortunately this customer was not having it.

By not stopping before shifting into reverse eventually the grinding leads to a chipped tooth on the reverse idler gear and it makes the sound you heard on that VW.

tyres can lose their thread layer like that if they are properly abused, or sometimes, refurbished. many years ago we saw an Opel Manta who just came off the nearby Autobahn. the rear left tyre had lost it's threading layer in one piece, and by the last turn it hammered the rear side panel's lower end upwards and spread the panel wide from the impact. driver was white as a sheet, it must have been quite the noise, and even at maybe 100-120KPH, too. if you lose a tyre at those speeds you'll need all the skills and luck you can come up with to avoid drilling a hole into the vicinity. the real shame was, that the poor car was in a near-mint condition; no rust-holes, no bumps, nothing. just bad refurbished tyres.

The reverse sound could be something rubbing the engine would twist the opposite way in reverse. Had it happen on my jeep the fan would hit the transmission cooler line because the engine moved that way in reverse only.

For the reverse one - bad cv joint. They get clunky and funky in reverse when they wear out

VW gearbox standard fail, bearing shot. The box is a MK 1 GOLF design used in newer vehicles. However they declared it a non maintenance box with lifetime oil, removed to ability to change the oil by removing the plug. That didn't work out too well, thousands of them failed I've replaced two of them, lupo and polo,

Had a problem with a bunch of weird and incomprehensible sounds coming from the passenger side of my car every time I would go driving. Put the seat belt on it, zip tied the hands to the arm rests, a little duct tape over the mouth, sound was practically gone! Still waiting to find a use for the WD-40...

The VW reverse only noise was something to do with the transmission gears. Clutch and related components turn the same way during reverse and forward. The only thing that changes are the gears used to reverse. Exactly what in the transmission we cannot say without looking inside.

That transmission is slipping when in reverse had a geo do that when going into second wouldn't stay in gear but I could force the shifter into position and then it would stay in second for just a few seconds

I've had someone complain that their brakes are making a grinding noise. It was so bad that it chewed through the entire inside of 2 rotors, leaving just the fins for the vents. Smh..🤦‍♂️

With a broken engine mount. Engine lifts in reverse but not forward. The opposite mount bad instead would cause engine to lift in drive. I had a car that happened to. Engine would lift and fan hits the shroud making horrible noise.

My Guess for the VW with reverse noise: Reverse gear is munched. Disassemble transmission, replace gears. OR... Could be a bent shift fork. Same procedure except replace shift fork too. Some idiot probably jammed it into reverse not knowing you need to, STOP THE CAR, THEN push the shifter DOWN, ALL THE WAY before shifting into reverse.

That's actually the exact correct way. Audi takes its name from founder August Horch's nickname, and being German, the Au- sound is similar to Aw-. Aw-guhst and Aw-dee. Ow-dee, as it's pronounced most commonly, is not correct to the native language or roots of the name.
