My great grand uncle fought as a VC in he 5th Division in that battle. I only manage to talk to him a few times before he passed away in 2012. He talked a lot about the good and the bad things they did during the war. This one he talked a lot, and till his dying breath he still doesnt believe that they were only 108 Anzac soldiers he fought, due to the fact that they were so ferocious. Even till his death he still believed he was fighting against a larger force. That was how badass the Anzacs were. Additional Note: We also called him Uncle Charlie. A nickname which he hated at first but later learned to love before he died. Rest in peace uncle.

I saw this today and it was fantastic. The theatre was nearly full and you could tell every one there was right on the edge of their seats. We were all waiting for that moment when the first major engagement happened, and we sort of knew when to expect it, but I think every single person in the audience jumped in their seats! You felt like the bullets were headed right at you. Everyone involved in this should get awards, including all the leads. Fimmel in particular was terrific - intense and heartfelt in his performance. The photography was amazing and the music was moving. I'll remember this for a long time. Go and see it!

Most of the Australians and NZ soldiers who served in the Vietnam War never really received the recognition they deserved, or any recognition at all. The war had become so politicised by the end that a lot of people resented and hated on the soldiers, instead of on the politicians responsible. For other returned vets, they found it difficult to join clubs like the RSL because older vets from WW2 mocked the Vietnam vets and said they didn't know what real war is. As a result they lived silently with their experiences and PTSD, and many still do. It's good to see a film celebrating these guys. On ANZAC Day it would be nice to see more focus put onto Vietnam vets as well, while they're still with us. It's good to remember the dead from older wars, but celebrating these people while they're still around is underrated and important.

zenrising I couldn’t agree more. Some of these blokes didn’t even have a choice thanks to the National draft being used to “recruit” soldiers. They still fought and died bravely under extreme conditions. They definitely deserved more recognition from there fellow countryman upon their return of service. They were disrespected by the lucky ones who didn’t get drafted or volunteer. As an Australian I have a huge amount of respect and pride for all of our AUS and NZ servicemen and women, past and present. They did what was required of them and often with high praise from their respected allies, but also the soldiers they fought against. 🇦🇺ANZACs🇳🇿 Lest we forget

Yeah lets not worry about battles like Gallipoli, the Western Front. Beersheba, Tobruk, or Samichon right? Long Tan was an epic fight and a tragedy but lets be honest and put it in perspective - it wasn't the biggest battle where Aussies were vastly outnumbered and suffered horrendous casualties..

@@timthewarlord2304 Being from a country does not make you an expert on it's history by default. You then go on to sate you got yoru info from "alltime 10s"??? So do you know because you are an Aussie or becasue you saw it on "alltime10s"? Yes they were outnumbered, took horrendous casualties but prevailed. That makes it costly, tragic, historic and inspiring but not by definition the "biggest" underdog battle in scale and magnitude when you compare it to battles in Korea, WW2 and WW1 where company sized elements as part of Battalions in defense bore the brunt of repeated wave attacks by thousands of enemy and artillery for days on end like the battle at Samichon in Korea otherwise known as "The Battle of the Hook" by 2 RAR who held the left flank: "On the night of 24 July 1953, the Chinese 137th Regiment attacked 2 RAR aiming for the gully between the Hook and Hill 111. D and C companies of 2RAR, on Hill 111, bore the brunt of the attack but lost no ground. During the day the Chinese artillery, provided by the Soviet Union and much stronger than at any previous stage of the war, bombarded the Australians. Nowhere did the CPV penetrate to the Australian trenches. On the morning of 26 July, the Chinese abandoned the attack after losing 2000 casualties. In the last two weeks of the war while holding the Hook, 2RAR lost 17 killed and 31 wounded. The battle honour The Samichon was awarded to the Royal Australian Regiment." But hey as an Australian you'd know all about that right? :-)

You are simply letting the men who went when their government called on them, [many by conscription meaning-they had no choice and many at only 18 years of age] they are not forgotten and certainly did not deserve the treatment and the public condemnation they received when they returned home. To each and every person who served, thank you for your service and sacrifice. You make out like Long Tan hasn't got attention in Australia - It is the subject many numerous books, articles, news stories and documentaries. Yes this is the first movie but certainly not the first time it has got public recognition. I'd argue after Gallipoli and Beersheba it is likely the most well known Aussie battle to the average person on the street.

Ditto to all that. I wonder how many negative responders have actually read Harry Smith's book and understand the enormous circumstances under which it was conducted. Not to mention the politics of feeble command decisions by higher ranks not within cooee of the battle front.
@gregpartridge1142
@gregpartridge1142 5 жыл бұрын
@@titaniumquarrion9838 I partially agree with your comments. The Australian public have some knowledge and understanding of the historical battles at Gallipoli, the Charge of the Light Horse at Beersheba and perhaps the AIF actions on the Western Front during WW1. When it comes to WW2, the average Australian might be able to tell you something about the horrors endured by the captured Allied forces who were worked to death on the Burma/Thailand Railway, maybe the aerial attack by the Japanese on Northern Australia and the shelling of Sydney Harbour, the 2nd AIF actions in the Western Desert and most would have heard about the Kokoda Track! I would argue that the average Australian knows absolutely nothing about our contribution to the Korean War and even less about our actions during the Malayan Emergency. In relation the Vietnam War, I agree that some Australian's would have heard about the Battle of Long Tan, but most would have little understanding of the details involved and how a vastly outnumbered Royal Australian Regiment Infantry Company managed to survive and repulse repeated attacks by a much larger enemy force, comprising regular units of the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong elements. As an aside, it was not unusual in the early and mid-eighties to still encounter serving Vietnam Veterans in the ADF, albeit their numbers were becoming less and they were normally senior Officers or NCO's. Our Company Sergeant Major (CSM) and Platoon Sergeant were both veterans of 3 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) actions during the 1st Australian Task Force Battle of Fire Support Base (FSB) Coral and Balmoral. After work when we were all gathered in the Mess, it was normal accepted practise to "take the mickey" out of all other elements/members of the Australian Army, plus the RAN and RAAF obviously! However, when our CSM and Platoon Sergeant were present, you never - ever made any derogatory comments about 6RAR, nor in particular the "drop shorts" from the Royal Australian Artillery (RAA), 161 Battery Royal New Zealand Artillery (RNZA), 9 Sqn RAAF or 1 APC Sqn Royal Australian Armoured Corp (RAAC). Any fool who broke this rule normally ended up near naked on the parade ground at 2am doing PT exercise until they collapsed from sheer exhaustion, as the sun slowly rose in the east - having just received hours of personal instruction from the CSM and Sgt. The respect that these two senior NCO's had for 6RAR, plus the RAA, RNZA, RAAF and the RAAC was legendary - 6RAR obviously because of their actions at Long Tan during 1966 and the RAA, RNZA, RAAF and the RAAC for not only their support of 6RAR during the Battle of Long Tan, but also for their later contribution to 3RAR's survival during the 1968 Battle of FSB Coral-Balmoral. Both D Coy 6RAR and later 3RAR provided airborne capability for the Australian Army. My respect to all who served and died during the Vietnam War, regardless of Service or Branch, Regular or Conscripted.

@@gregpartridge1142 You stated: "I would argue that the average Australian knows absolutely nothing about our contribution to the Korean War and even less about our actions during the Malayan Emergency." I never stated that wasn't the case so you aren't arguing about ti with me - I agree. I also stand by my statement there are numerous books, tv segments and docos about Long Tan and I'd argue more Aussies would have heard about it, even if they don't know the details, than the key battles fought by Aussies in Korea. The biggest issue I have with Long Tan is the lack of formal military recognition not civilian recognition and how long ti took for the few to get the little recognition (Honours & Awards) they did from the battle. Of course much of that was a result of WW2/Korea veterans then in senior leadership positions who did not consider Vietnam to be a "real war". The ADF has now gone the polar opposite and hands out DSMs/DSCs etc like candy to officers these days for simply doing their job (or rather get their subordinates to make them look good) . Hell you don't even have to perform that job under fire to earn one.

Enemy mortar fire bombarding our position killing my ammo bearer and wounding our platoon leader Lt. Flint. The enemy took point after point with their Commander effectively using Ho chi mind trail, SAM’s (AA) and their SL’s squad tunnels. Last objective, no reinforcements and for 5 minutes of holding the ruined mansion. Both sides resorted to nade spamming and screaming ” Go home Gi” Lt. Flint played his bugle and yelled ” fix bayonet boys”. We charged into the enemy... 10/10 rising storm 2

With a blast kill radius of up to 150 meters and a dispersed radius of up to 300 meters, calling a danger close mission takes A LOT of accurate grid plotting and skillful artillery gunnery. The Stratatigerizer Our radioman mic spammed that as we were pushing the NLF back. Admins loved it and let him mic spam the team. We kept him alive cuz we NEVER LOST A MATCH. Also John F Kennedy was our commander and we constantly called BROKEN ARROW the second it was available........ we never fell back past Alpha on supremacy because of that. The broken arrow landed on top of a church that was Alpha point with no roof. The whole team authorized broken arrow before the point started to cap. VICTORY IS OUR TRADITION WE NEVER LOST A MATCH WITH THEM

Great to see Vietnam war movies being made again. I feel like not enough people make movies to tell these stories of 'Nam. Everyone still focuses on WWII. It's about time our Vietnam veterans get some recognition.
