The F-22 and F-35 wear radar reflector and amplifiers in peace time called "Luneburg lenses" that allow it to be seen by radar. If a combat situation were to happen these are removed and I believe they can be jettisoned by the pilot on the F-22, not sure about the F-35. Any training with foreign countries with the F-22 will have these lenses so that any attempt by a foreign power to gauge the planes true stealth will be impossible. Nice video! Great work in putting these videos out.

This is why the US doesn't want to sell F-35s to Turkey if they're going also going to buy Russian S-400 air defense systems: Turkey could then fly their F-35s *without* the Luneberg lenses against their S-400, and obtain extremely valuable information on how the F-35's stealth features would perform against its most dangerous adversary SAM, data which more likely than not would end up in the hands of the S-400's manufacturer.

F-22 has a better thrust-to-weight ratio than the Hornet though, and all the Raptor's weapons are internal, so it helps reduce drag as well, so of course, it's going to retain energy better unless it recently used thrust vectoring.

The range an F-22 can be locked by radar varies by several factors including radar noise floor, amplitude, frequency, viewing angle, and the Raptor's control surfaces. As a general RULE OF THUMB, cuz I know someone is gonna jump in with semantics and try to look smart, the Raptor can be detected at about 10 miles by older 4th gen aircraft like the F\A-18C, while newer PESA radars from the SU-35 or Eurofighter can detect it at about 15 miles or so. But since most IR missiles have a range of 20+ miles, aircraft will likely use other cueing methods such as electro optical.

@Mars Exulte Eh, maybe with newer pilots. With the more experienced guys, the F-16 has to use burner and is pushed to its limits. “It’s not a matter of trying to kill him, but to see how long you can survive!” is a direct quote from a Viper pilot of the 56th FW.
@hoghogwild
@hoghogwild 5 жыл бұрын
@@jordananderson2728 You arent a fighter pilot if you arent using FULL BURNER on every engagement. Its not the top speed that is being sought with huge engine outputs, its the acceleration that comes with it that matters. Acceleration is so much more important than top speed.

@jordananderson2728 5 жыл бұрын
@@hoghogwild thank you for pointing out my gaffe. It has since been fixed. I will now take all my AR-47Ks off of full semiautomatic so that doesn't happen again. Also, you don't always want burner - with some maneuvers, that can actually get you killed.
@hoghogwild
@hoghogwild 5 жыл бұрын
@@jordananderson2728 "Also, you don't always want burner - with some maneuvers, that can actually get you killed." Yup, there was an American fighter pilot F-111/14/15 that was experiencing a single engine out situation and he remarked that he was hesitant to use A/B on the remaining engine as he didn't want to be confused with the multitude of single engine Iraqui aircraft in the area. Using the "jugs" makes your IR signature MASSIVE. My point was that there are many people that think using a/b is only for reaching a faster top speed, when in reality max a/b is used moreso for the huge acceleration it produces as most engagements occur at subsonic speeds.

I'm not sure why you would want to see the Su-57 because the program was a total failure. All Russia managed to build was two prototypes that weren't capable of performing any combat missions. Also the Su-57 wasn't very stealthy, underpowered engines, and lacked the advanced senors and avionics that the F-22 and F-35 carry. Anyone can build a really super maneuverable fighter, but super maneuverability doesn't win air to air engagements in modern warfare anymore. The F-22 is the most manueverable and agile fighter in the world and that is the LEAST most impressive thing about the F-22!
@damoldavsky
@damoldavsky 5 жыл бұрын
@@mississippirebel1409 not at all. 10 flying prototypes of Su-57 are built. There was also combat testing in Syria in 2018. Objectively, Su-57 is more maneuverable then F-22 because of Su-57's engines capability of changing vector thrust in 2 dimensions. Also, it's not possible to compare F-22 and Su in other characteristics like avionics and stealth capabilities objectively, because they are classified for both of the aircrafts. But in my opinion avionics of Su are better, just because F-22 was produced about 20 years ago.

You really need to work on your energy management. And your general aggression in all fights to be honest. 2 circle fight, even with a deep slice you ended up well under 200 knots which just gives the fight to the enemy. Seen that in pretty much all dogfights, along with exclusively lead pursuit trying to get the guns kill. Unfortunately theres more to ACM than putting the enemy on your lift vector and pulling the stick back as far as it will go. With a bit of moderation and energy management you'll be in a much better place to actually work on the other tactics like lag offset rolls and the like. Still, against an F-22 whilst trying to keep the fight above 350 knots would help you're still outclassed in every area. An F-15 would be a fairer fight, except for its missiles and lack of HMS it is the best performing machine in pretty much every area of the official DCS aircraft. I'd still want the fight above 350 knots, but it might have actual parity in that region which is something. Also as an aside above about 450 knots you're not really gaining anything. You might turn with a higher G, but the degrees per second is still lower which is the important part in a rate fight like the 2 circle.

@olivialambert4124

Appreciated. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to make content now. I've a fairly severe medical issue right now, I haven't even been able to casually play DCS for some time. 1400 subs with zero content - there's a lot of desperate creeps on youtube and I used to comment fairly regularly. Pretty sure it was 2500 at some point before the youtube sub purges, its just silly. Its not really important, if I was to make content it would be a new channel. I'd want a subscriber base who are there for my content, not for creeping on me. I'm guessing with good content surpassing that number shouldn't take long at all. I'm lucky enough to have grown up with some of the best books around on ACM. It just takes time (and practice) and some reliable and accurate sources and it falls into place reasonably quickly. Unfortunately most online sources and videos show misinformation (both WVR and BVR) which significantly slows down most people's understanding. As you've mentioned making videos would probably help that somewhat but for now I'm limited to comments. Still until I can get back on DCS its at least something. I was looking forward to the F-18 since they first mentioned it and I really haven't been able to play it properly. Plus it passes the time fairly well, air combat is something I could talk about forever.

Is this right, and how do I get that close without getting shot, and while obtaining situational awareness?

In a tight turning gun fight an F-16 is a tough opponent, even for the F-22. This F-22 model is broken. An F-18 should not be far behind an F-16 in agility. At low speed an F-22 should not be able to sustain tight maneuvers because of wing loading, even with vectored thrust. It should be bleeding energy like crazy but in this video it keeps flying circles around a teen series in tight turns. It should get one or two tries to bring nose around and then have to back off and get energy.

This is a broken F-22 model. They are agile but at low speed should not be out turning you by that much. Vectored thrust would give an advantage but that is still a big aircraft to bring around, not a missile. It should be bleeding energy in a tight turn fight and run out of wing load. F-22 has good instantaneous turn performance but the sustained turn performance is still limited by physics. This aircraft model doesn't seem to care about physics.

I'm actually pretty curious how bad that engine damage was for the F-22, and how accurate said effect was (since I remember you said its FM is probably pretty wonky). The turn-around into guns was pretty quick though, so maybe he just managed to make the most of what energy he still had and was still getting from the good engine to get that kill.

The pilot of the -22 in an above comment didn't notice any difference with one engine gone. He said he suspects the mod failed to account for an engine out.

Eurofighter has an EXCELLENT AESA. This hornet would be blind to this thing at most distances head on except you're already WAY under AMRAAM NEZ. Nevermind the Raptor could burn the Hornet's radar out with a targeted offensive EW strike. ((assuming nose on, of course.))

Growling Sidewinder I do have to say, my love for the Hornet started when I went and watched Independence Day in ‘96. I’ve seen the Blue Angels four times. Never seen the Thunderbirds and I was in the AF. I always hear the Angels are a better show but, I always thought the ‘Birds would be better because of the F-16’s better maneuverability. Correct me if I’m wrong.

In the third fight, the Raptor had a pretty decent flight path overshoot just before he killed you. If you had reversed and tried to go into the flats, you could've at least neutralized the fight if not become offensive. Also, you should strive to always be in the rate band even on deck transitions. Trade the altitude for airspeed and pull harder to get angles on your opponent. Being fast and enlarging your turn circle will never be a good option.

Yes you can lock it up at close range. Stealth just delays the detection! But that's a huge advantage. The point is you kill the other guy before they detect you. You're not supposed to wait till the merge and then have a dog fight. Hide and then take your opponent out before he sees you. That's the goal.

Ace combat isnt anywhere near as realistic, but when I did a 1 on 1 dogfight against an F-22, I was using an F-14 D, I knew I couldn't outpreform him, so I focused purely on dodging his attacks. After a long struggle, I made him run out of everything he had, including the 99 generic missiles he had. I barely won that fight and they dropped out the 2nd respawn lol
