Nice to see a 48 in Delboy's Garage :) Cheers guys, from a huge fan and 48 owner from Down-under... Mine has the 3.3g tank off an 883 on it too, amongst many other mods. Rock on!!!

AussieDreamChaser Hello mate, how many miles are you managing until fuel light? Cheers
@AussieDreamChaser9 жыл бұрын
G'day mate, just so happens I sing in an original rock band also :) current name is "Solarstatic" if you want to check out a couple of our songs on iTunes or Google Play etc, but we're thinking of a name change. 48's must be the bike of choice for lead singers hehehe. Mine's a 2011 model, I get about 140km before the fuel light comes on but I can get over 200km before I really need to fuel up. I have screaming eagle slip on pipes wrapped and a Kuryakyn air cleaner with a Power Commander V. I've tucked the wires and made several other mods. I think the fuel sensor get's a bit confused when we do the tank swap but you'll learn to judge it. When I fill up, normally around 170km on after a fill, I usually still have about 3 litres in the tank. Del and Penny are awesome :) your bike's looking good and you'll appreciate the extra mileage, well done mate, love your music too. Rock on!!!
@TheTransitionsCovers-Originals9 жыл бұрын
G'day mate, I have no idea how you are getting those miles? Maybe it has something to do with your Power Commander V? Have you done a tank swap too? I can't get anywhere near that even with my new tank! 70-75 miles and my fuel light is on. It still seems to read correct though with my new tank. I will have a listen buddy and thanks for the comment! :)
@AussieDreamChaser9 жыл бұрын
The Transitions Yeah mate, same tank as you have now so 3.3 Gallons is about 12.5 Litres. The original peanut tank from the 48's is 7.9 Litres and a few guys I ride with get about 120km before they start looking for a gas station. I had a ride yesterday and filled up after 120km and only had to put 7 Litres to fill it to the brim so in theory I still had 5.5 Litres in the tank. My fuel light normally comes on around 140 - 160km into a ride but when I fill up I usually only need to put 9 - 10 litres in. I've never fully ran it dry with the new tank on it but I have gone over 200km and still had fuel in the tank. I have had my bike dyno tuned and they re-mapped it for the power commander to get around 73 HP at the rear tire. Maybe the PCV and Dyno have something to do with the mileage I get. Also I'm not sure what pipes and air-cleaner you have on the bike but they could play a part. The other thing is, I always fill up with 98 octane usually BP Ultimate here in Sydney Australia, so I'm not sure if that increases my fuel efficiency as well. With that new tank you should see more than 75 miles for sure? Keep me posted on what you find, feel free to contact me through my bands Facebook page if you like. Rock on bro!!!

I know a lot of riders who have done the tank swap. Your right in not putting the 4.5 gallon tank on. I think the size tank you chose keeps the lines and the flow of the bike looking better than the fatter tank. Thanks for the video. Ride safe!

Ahhh a real treat that and really great to 'meet' the man behind the voice and band. What a lovely chap! Enjoyed that tremendously. His 48 is now looking way better and will now go (a bit) further on a tank! I love the 48, especially in this guise! Very cool indeed. Many many thanks for the other night, it was a rare and great pleasure and extremely informative. We both know which way I'll be going, so I'll keep you posted once I set wheels in motion. With a more capable bike, I think I can safely say that we'll end up getting to meet face to face before too long! 350 miles from me to Poole!

I agree, in another video, one 48 owner replaced the peanut tank with a much bigger and wider 4.5 gallon gas tank and it did indeed completely destroy the look of his 48, and it now looks more like a Honda or a touring bike, I would not be able to tell if the bike was a Sportster. The 883 tank is a far better alternative.
@hulkhatepunybanner Жыл бұрын
*The 3.1 gallon 883 tank (which I thought was a peanut) at best gives a 100 mile range. My thought a decade ago was to extend the 883 tank upwards, making it taller instead of wider.*

Hello again Del and Penny, Just wanted to say thanks again for having my bike on your bench, swapping my tank and making this video. I know it will help loads of people over time because its such an obvious mod to do. The 2.1 tank does look cool but i need this bike to be a bike i can ride and even with this tank the range is still quite limited. I'm pretty sure some comments will eventually show up here with the speech about this tanks heritage regarding 1948 etc etc and now I changed my tank its not a 48! I don't care if its not a 48 in your opinion anymore (although it is, I only changed the tank lol), this is my bike and i (and Del) just made it better. Thanks for the nice comments about my bike guys. I love it even more now. Few more mods and it will be sweet. Maybe its a 4 Iron? See ya Thursday Delta and Penstar and a massive thanks again. RocknRolla x

Good info. Del. First thing I did on my 2104 "48" was the tank switch. I went with a 4.5 US gal. tank I got off E-Bay with custom paint and airbrushing for $600.00 US dollars. Then switched to Vance and Hines Short Shot staggered pipes in flat black to match the engine. Had the dealer do a stage 1 download and finished up with a Bates style solo springer saddle. I live in Arizona,USA where we have good roads and miles of open spaces to ride year round. The 4.5 gal. vs the 2.1 gal. stock peanut tank made a BIG difference.

@Moonfleet418 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy, happy to help with this - you say 'vent hose', then 'fuel line' - firstly, do you mean vent hose, as in the overflow hose that I cut and shortened in this video?? Or do you mean the fuel supply line to send fuel to the carb?? And, is your bike fuel injection, or carb??
@soulassassin24248 жыл бұрын
Moonfleet41 Yes, overflow hose in my EFI fuel tank. Also the hole looks like i have to screw something in it because it doesnt have anything sticking out like the one in my OEM tank. I dont know what it's called. Thanks.

Byron Anderson Hi Byron, good to hear from you! These little jobs are really never that difficult, if you buy yourself the big, fat, blue service manual from Harley, you'll be surprised how easily they lay it out... ! It was great having a Harley back on deck, and I promised myself I will have another Harley some day, so it will happen! This recovery is slow and I just don't wanna tempt fate diving in to a heap of finance for a bike I'll only use on Sundays ... we only missed out on winning the StreetGlide by a cat's whisker, top 5 out of 10,000 and all that, but you never know who's watching!

The peanut tank is one of the great things about the 48!! I can easily get 70-75 miles to a tank... not much better I guess in the grand scheme of things lol nice how to vid as usual anyway Del, keep up the good work... ;-)

Great vid... was able to swap out the tank. I disagree though that the 4.5 gallon tank would ruin the look of rhe 48. I installed one... looks great! Fat tank matches the fat tires!

I have a 48 and would love to upgrade the tank. Thanks for the demo how too. Your Mate needs to upgrade those pegs, and Air filter. Let the girl BREATH! He'll be amazed at how much more the 48 comes alive, with simple mods. Have fun and ride safe.
@Moonfleet419 жыл бұрын
Bill Fuget I think he'll get to all of it in time, but he was hardly gonna upgrade to stage1 until he'd dealt with the tank range, as it was bad enough on standard fueling!
@TheTransitionsCovers-Originals9 жыл бұрын
Moonfleet41 The air filter will come for sure! Del is right, had to sort my tank range first. The problem for me with filters (apart from cost as they cost a small fortune plus I will also have to tune or get the V+H fuelpak or tons of other choices) is the huge choice available. I just can't decide which i like best. The ones I like the look of so far are 10% over OEM but if I'm gonna do it i want to increase air flow by 20% + As far as foot pegs the standard 48 ones aint that pretty but i do find them comfortable and they grip my boots good. I wonder how well the metal ones will grip. Dont really like the look of bare trap and jaws style ones. Some use a mixture of metal and rubber which so far I'm prob swaying towards most. To be honest they are not top of my list just because mine are already comfy. Just got rid of all that shit that hung over my back wheel though so looks way cleaner and much more RocknRolla at the back now. :)

The Transitions HD Black diamond pegs/grips and V&H intake/exhaust. I love the grips and pegs, far better then stock in my opinion.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=962026940500530&set=pb.100000797007684.-2207520000.1439099955.&type=3&theater
Nice one Del, nice and simple but the extra range will make one hell of a difference, I can't imagine not being able to get the 135 miles I get out of mine before the reserve light comes on, and I've still got 4.5 litres left before it's empty, RSM8.

I may still get the fuel bottle as well as my nice new tank mate. The mileage is still very limited. Only got 75 miles with the new tank until fuel light came on today. Better than 55 but still pretty poor.

The Transitions hahaha! Definitely a good choice having the tank upgrade ... I use my 48 on a daily basis, goes without saying I know all the petrol stations between work and home !!! :) It's a sweet ride though I like your handlebars too ... is that comfortable to ride or do you have to stop every now and then to get circulation back to your fingertips? (Serious question as I'm considering the purchase)

EFI bikes have a reserve capacity metered by the fuel pump buddy, so when the fuel light comes up on the speedo clock you 'are on reserve', just like in your car !

thanks for the vid nice details and proper installation. Was going to upgrade to the 4.5 gal tank but, think I am going for the 3.3 tank. Like what you said about keeping the lines of the bobber look.

Sure thing Whitey, the 3.3 is a fine range, you'll still get maybe 120 miles on a standard 883 which is usually enough for a bum break..lol

You definitely got it man. Your video jumped out the same day I bought a new peanut tank for my 48. Just a question: does white lithium grease work properly as lubricant of that plastic gasket all around the fuel pump?
@jimmete532 жыл бұрын
Great video. Will use the info in the video to fix my fuel guage on my sportster. Just one suggestion on the breather tube you cut and used super glue on. Why didnt you cut the other end of the tube to make it shorter? This way you would keep intact the press fit and not need to use super glue. Regards Jim

Do you think this would apply to 48's of the more recent year models? And if so, does it safely transition to US made bikes as well?
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
I guess if you think about it, they're all US made anyway, and im not sure that things like the gas tank are different spec from Home market to Euro market.. but if you want to be sure, then your HD main dealer will know the changes that are current to the 48 model now.. and whether the tank can be swapped... i know they are still a very poor gas range for a 1200cc bike..!
@AudioArcturia5 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 that was my concern, I just worded it poorly. I'll give that a shot! I love the look and feel of the 48, and really wanna buy it soon. But that gas tank is a deal breaker.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
@@AudioArcturia Yeah, for many people too i think.. why they haven;t managed to overcome it with a small auxiliary tank to increase capacity i dont understand.. if its any consolation, they look great with a regular Sporty tank in place, and then you get 100 miles between fills.. not 48..!!!

Now that the old tank is off how do you store it so that the old tank doesn't get rusty from sitting out? Great video by the way.
@Moonfleet415 жыл бұрын
Good question, great way to do is to take out the fuel pump assembly, if you haven't already, so it's empty... pour in a pint of engine oil, seal it up, then roll it all round the inside so it's fully coated, then stick it in the loft in a box... and if you're really worried, maybe roll it round again every few months, and if you come to re-use it in the future, you can rinse it out with petrol till it's clean and ready to use.
@sirtooby9 жыл бұрын
Thanx. I have a 7.9 liter tank on my 48. You can use the location of the petrol stations as GPS dots.... Need to have a bigger tank, was looking for a 4.5 from the super low but not shure about the looks of it. Perhaps better to follow the same route, buy a Iron tank. Just a side note: I have a 2014 and tried to find the data port to match the cable I bought. Beware.... the data port has 6 pins from 2014 and forward compared to the old 4 pin connector.

Hello. Question here. The Grease. Did you use a Silicon based grease? That tube you cut, Might be able to get one with the bubbled end from an Auto Parts store. And cut to length. I know we have short fuel line ends in the Help(Dorman Brand) section. I just bought a 1200 Custom. And thinking about doing some work to it.
