Seeing the comments makes me want a third song. Johnny's an old man now, and he finally dies. He's standing at the pearly gates, but St Peter says he has to wait. Even if it's justified, pride is still a sin, and while he's carrying the devil's fiddle they cannot let him in. (bah; that rhymes and almost scans. My brain must be in music mode) He has to return the fiddle, so Johnny goes down to hell. The devil laughs, says he knew Johnny would be coming here. All those years ago he claims he let him win, because he knew that pride would bring the country boy's soul here in the end. Johnny can't take that, so he challenges him to a rematch. The devil might get his fiddle back, but if he loses for real he has to renounce all claim on that man's soul. The devil has all the great musicians to form his backing band, but even the demons are tapping their feet when Johnny starts to play. So now the devil can't take Johnny's soul, but Heaven says "Johnny, we can see that you're the best there's ever been, but even for the greatest you know pride is still a sin." So he passes that fiddle down to his son, and returns to Georgia to live for as long as he's the best, until his son can beat him and lay that pride to rest. No idea why that popped into my head, but I want to write it now.
@RedT...TheOriginal.NotANumber5 жыл бұрын
That's an awesome story. If I were you, I'd write down as complete a version as you can get, dig up the address of the studio or producer, and send that in certified mail.
@AngelWedge5 жыл бұрын
Now Johnny's son's a young man while Johnny has grown old. Hanging over Johnny's mantle is a fiddle made of gold. It's a legend in their hometown how he came on such a prize, The only man in Georgia who could best the Devil twice. He's the best there's ever been and he knows that is no lie, But time kept moving on and even the best must die. Secure in the belief that he had always done his best, Johnny came to paradise to face his final test. But St Peter closed the pearly gates, and said "I can't let you in; "'Cause even for the best a prideful act is still a sin." … woke up with it in my head this morning. Think maybe it's a bit too slow, though. Going to be too many verses to fit the whole story.

The fact they got Johnny Cash and Charlie Daniels to team up for this song makes it just as epic as the original. I would love it if Charlie was able to make a third and final song for this series a 3rd and final act as it were, where Johnny is an old man who the Devil knows is not as fast or young as he once was. He would thing that now would be the perfect time to finally take the soul that had long been evading his grasp.

So what was Johnny playing for? He already had the golden fiddle, what was the prize for beating the devil this time? The devil had everything to win and nothing to lose.
@tango6pl8 жыл бұрын
Well in the first song he invited him back. So it was a matter of pride. Johnny was a prideful fiddle player, and greedy for wanting a useless golden fiddle. I think the devil already has his soul, and is forcing him to play the fiddle in hell.

Or it's the devil's rematch against Johnny, like a double or nothing. If the devil wins, he not only claims Johnny's soul and fiddle, he gets bragging rights over the man who beat him. Johnny is prideful, but he's trying not to lose in this rematch.

It's been ten long years since the devil laid his fiddle at Johnny's feet And it burned inside his mind the way he suffered that defeat In the darkest pits of hell the devil hatched an evil plan To tempt the fiddle player for he's just a mortal man "The sin of pride," the devil cried is what will do you in "I thought we had this settled, I'm the best there's ever been." Johnny did you ever know that time keeps marching on The coldest hour is the one comes just before the dawn The devil's back in Georgia will you stand up to the test Or will you let the devil be the best? "In truth I haven't played much since the baby came in June But give me half a minute an' I'll get this fiddle back in tune" The devil grabbed the golden fiddle out of Johnny's hand and said "Though I'm the fiddle player underground and I walk upon the land" "Y'all just better be just turnin' back if you want this boy to win 'Cos practice is the only cure for the predicament he's in" "Now devil it would be a sin for you to get my bow You go on back to hell and to the wood shed I will go" Johnny are you practising or will your hands grow cold? The devil walks the land and plays a fiddle made of gold Can you hear the babe a crying, will he ever know The devil wants his daddy's very soul? Before we play I want to thank you for letting God's own Word ring true He said you can't be trusted" "Yes but what you gonna do?" "Well you get your fiddle devil if you think that you can win 'Cos I beat you once you old dog and I can whip your butt again" John Brown's green, the devil is red Mama's little baby loves shortnin' bread The devil's dream is that he can win But Johnny is the best that's ever been

NASHVILLE - Charlie Daniels, the singer, songwriter and bandleader who was a force in both country and rock for decades, bringing a brash, down-home persona and blazing fiddle work to hits like “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” died on Monday in Nashville. He was 83. His publicist announced the death, at Summit Medical Center in the Hermitage section of the city, saying the cause was a hemorrhagic stroke. Mr. Daniels made his first mark as a session musician in the late 1960s and early ’70s, playing guitar, bass, fiddle and banjo on Nashville recordings by Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr and Leonard Cohen. He also produced albums for the Youngbloods, including the group’s 1969 folk-rock touchstone, “Elephant Mountain.” But his greatest acclaim came as the leader of the Charlie Daniels Band, a country-rock ensemble that hosted the Volunteer Jam, the freewheeling Southern music festival, established in 1974, that featured Roy Acuff, Stevie Ray Vaughn, James Brown and the Marshall Tucker Band.

The Devil went down to Georgia Where he got his red ass whupped Johnny was proud And he said out loud "I'll never be one-upped!" But as that challenge echoed Out into the Georgia blue The Lord jumped in With his violin Said, "It's time for round two!" "You're getting mighty cocky," Said the Lord, "Now you're in trouble!" "That kind of pride, "I won't abide! "It's nothing or it's double!" Well, Johnny tightened up his strings He said "Don't make me groan! "I'll take the bet, "But what I get "Is a day upon your throne!" There came a flash of lightning And the Lord said "You're all in! "But if you lose, "You'll take a cruise "Into oblivion!" Johnny, now you're in too deep; that fiddle better sing! 'Cause now you're up against the guy who made everything! If you win, you get a chance to rule both great and small But if you lose, you won't exist at all... The Lord rosined up his bow And said "This will be quick! "I know some things "On Heaven's strings "That ought to do the trick!" With a mighty flourish The Lord began his line And his fiddle played A serenade That was quite divine: ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♬ ♩ ♩♫ ♬ ♪ ♬ [ANGELIC MUSIC PLAYS] ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♬ ♩ ♩♫ ♬ ♪ ♬ When the Lord had finished Johnny only rolled his eyes "If that's your best, "Just take a rest, "And witness your demise!" ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♬ ♩ ♩♫ ♬ ♪ ♬ Rationality that you can't resist! Jehovah's in a fight with an atheist! All of Heaven's angels start to grieve! You can't beat a man who doesn't believe! ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♬ ♩ ♩♫ ♬ ♪ ♬ The Lord, he raised an eyebrow, saying "Johnny, you've been cheating! "There's no sense smiting you, boy, if you can't feel the beating!" Johnny said "I'll tell you what, just save those declarations. "I'm so high, I've been playing the fiddle against hallucinations!" And he played: ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♬ ♩ ♩♫ ♬ ♪ ♬ Eating all the mushrooms and seeing stuff! The Lord and the Devil have both had enough! But Johnny has a question buried deep within: Where did he find a golden violin? ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♬ ♩ ♩♫ ♬ ♪ ♬ ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♬ ♬ ♩ ♩♫ ♬ ♪ ♬!

I'm from the Netherlands and I'm a big fan of county music. I think for country music you have to have a specific kind of voice, both clear language, a clean voice, a little tough and let's face it, you have to be American for it in my eyes. There are so many out there that fit the qualifications I mentioned. Most of their songs could easily be turned into a feature film. The devil went down to Georgia and The devil went back to Georgia are great examples of this. You could make such good movies from these songs.

Keith Urban is Australian and has become a staple of country music. To really be able to do country, it's not so much about your nationality or race, and more about what's in your heart and your ability to project that. See the Kris Kristofferson song "The Ride" to get a good idea of what I'm talking about.
