I'm new to your channel and a complete noob to sim racing in Rally, thanks to your vids I've been able to take part in a 5 event's Rally Championships and sitting in 5th place. Dude, thank you so much. This technique helped me alot. I mean it is quite obvious but I never thought about it. I was always scared of using the brakes in corners and only braked before turning in. :)

These videos are really informative and well explained! I'm fairly decent in DR2 (I actually have, or had at least, the WR on Naarajärvi (Wet), Finland on RGT class) but I still have some problems regarding car control, many times running too wide or spinning out. Way too aggressive driving, probably. I'll have to take notes and adjust my driving.

It can make it faster for very sharp corners, but it's not necessarily needed. Glad I could help!

New here and he in rally 2.0 but I got much better when I learned to use the shift! (Even playing with my ps4 controller) if you learn to use the shifter you can be really good!!!

Great video, dude. Most if my friends and I play with gamepads rather than wheels, and being able to easily, smoothly balance the brake and throttle inputs is probably the biggest (and only) advantage a gamepad has over a wheel setup, at least in terms of gameplay. So this technique is the best way to go when using a gamepad, but I'm dumb and have a hard time explaining it to my friends (who aren't dumb, they just typically have way less time to play than I do.) Looking forward to that RWD video to see if I'm missing anything. RWD cars are my favorite across all racing games, especially in DR1, but I kind of feel like RWD cars in DR2 are a little "off" somehow. Or maybe I'm just searching for ways to excuse my suck. Anyway, new to the channel, and new subscriber. Keep it coming!

@Zwenk Wiel I didn't say there's no way to do it in a car or with a wheel set up. I just think you can get more precise movements out of your fingers than you can out of your feet.

I don’t have a setup and I bought one of the expensive fancy Xbox controllers with the paddles on the back for racing games and I am really struggling to not lock up my brakes, I’m fine up to 50%, but I’m having trouble between 50-100% input, I just can’t quite get my finger to not go too far under heavy braking. Apart from that I would say controller triggers are easier than pedals. However I disagree on “feeling more with a controller”. I haven’t tried any actual sim setups but I have driven competitively in real life’ and you definetly have a lot of control and feeling of how far the pedal is with your feet, apart from the trickiness of left foot braking and heel toeing feet just seem to have better control.

I think the proper title of this should be weight transfer to go faster cause when breaking you moving the weight forward. It's not balanced, you creating oversteer, front tyres bite and the rear have less grip. It's part of license tests on Richard Burns rally. (To see how much they do this in Real life, go to WRC channel and watch they on onboard video with Telemetry)

Well I am surprised that I was already balancing my car on the same stage (new Zealand) even before I watched this video, although it was with a FWD Lancia Fulvia which is much slower than the WRX STI and also the fact that I play on a keyboard 🙂, but thanks for the tip, really appreciate it.......

That comparison you’re doing @3:40 no brakes vs brakes in the corner. You are also going in full throttle vs little throttle and down shift. So yeah, braking for the corner makes difference but none or little throttle through the corner + downshift and feathering the throttle makes the huge difference. Probably even more than braking.

I have seen info on shifting the weight on your front wheels by letting off the throttle or breaking to induce the desired oversteer in many places. What i couldn't find anywhere though (and i probably spent 2 or 3 hours searching by now) in information on the timing between turning and shifting the weight forward and on how strong the steering input should be, unfortunately you don't explain it either in this video. But that's where your nice demonstration comes in. Do i see it correctly that you steer just a bit, then shift the weight forward to induce oversteer and then go back to throttle while steering as needed? What do you do if you have to brake first? Let's say there is a long straight with a sharp corner at the end and you have to slow down first because you would go off the track otherwise no matter what you do, kinda like on that comparison left corner in the free roam, but if there were a drop on the right side of the track. I guess first you brake in a straight line. But then, do you just start turning while braking, or do you let go of the brake, turn and brake again? Or do you do something completely different? Sorry for all the questions, but i really couldn't find the answer to those anywhere. The only thing i found was some Red Bull blog post about how Sebastien Loeb changed how rallies are driven by using a different techinque of braking. But they just explain it for gravel as "On gravel, what you do is you brake, feel [the grip] a little bit, and then when the corner comes, you come off the brake and full throttle." www.redbull.com/int-en/jari-matti-latvala-art-of-braking

Brake just a little bit before turning, it makes it much more predictable. Sometimes the inputs that show up on screen can be slightly delayed. As for long straights before turns it's heavy on the brakes in a straight line, then turn in. In that case I will typically try to use the Scandinavian Flick to make the corner.

Also thanks for the tip in the video for that New Zealand stage, i'll go and practice there later. As for the Scandinavian Flick: I'll wait with that until i can get corners consistently the normal way. And even then, i guess the Scandinavian Flick alone can't compensate for every speed difference either e.g. the hairpins after the top speed sections in New England, though i guess a handbrake turn is better there anyway.

In racing this technique is not "balancing" its "trail braking" which as you described is braking to help rotate the car around not just to slow down. in road courses and autocross its used as a late braking technique in corners where it's not necessarily good to take the traditional line due to the following corner. Very good video show casing the technique tho 👌

You still have to modulate the brake which shifts weight either way, balancing or trail braking could probably be used interchangeably in all honesty.

@@RoadsideTV08 balancing typically is referred to as physically putting the car on scales and balancing the corners in other words "corner balancing" or a "balanced car" is one that doesn't over steer too much or under steer too much it has the right "balance" of both. I understand fully where you are coming from in the sense that you are shifting the weight around so you say balancing. It makes sense. Just not correct terms. Never the less love the videos just got into dirt rally 2.0 a week or so ago to give me some racing during the off season.

It can apply to FWD cars as well since you need the front tires to "bite" for traction while turning, but you have to be careful not to overload the front tires to the point where they lose grip and cause understeer.

4:45 "we still went a little wide" yeah but you didnt even let off the throttle the first time xD imo, a poor demonstration. its not only braking to aid you around the corner, its the brake bias and LSD locks that make the turn for you. as a viewer, i appreciate the 'how to, when to brake' but there was alot of information about braking left out :/

That was the point of not braking at all, it was to show how much of a difference using the brake to shift the weight and help rotate the car around. Admittedly I did take it very fast but I wanted to demonstrate the effect.
