The Zucker brothers absolutely loved to make comedy films but cast actors known for their serious, dramatic work. They would direct them to deliver their lines in dramatic fashion, and the juxtaposition of it all just sent the absurdity and hilarity through the roof.

The reason for his comedic success, and Don Adams (Get Smart) had the same approach, was to play the role _straight:_ the character regards any situation in deadly earnest. It would also apply to Kubric's directions to George C. Scott for general Buck Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove: the 'rehearsals' for the scenes were, overtly stated, 'intended' to be ridiculously over the top in order that Scott would be loosened up for the actual 'finished' shoot. Scott was not told that scene which he was playing was playing was supposed to be comedic, and Scott wasn't trying to be funny, just...over-the-top. This suited Kubric's _covert_ intention: the ridiculous 'rehearsal' footage was put in the film. When Scott learned he had been played, he was furious.

I was able to use part of this quote yesterday and am so proud of myself.
