Douglas Rushkoff (digital humanism author and documentarian) helps us break down human autonomy in the digital age and the social implications of the tech world. He takes us through his start in the cyberpunk movement, from goals of uniting humanity through the early internet, the intersections of psychedelics and counter-culture with computer programming, through the big business takeover of the internet. Douglas explains the perils of algorithm technology, the evils of cryptocurrency, and how social disconnect can contribute to consumerism. He reveals ways politicians and corporations capitalize on our fears and insecurities to push their own agendas and the factors that led extremist movements like QAnon to become so popular. Mayim and Douglas break down the neuroscience and biology of human connection and consider ways tech physically primes our bodies for dehumanization. They discuss how to combat feelings of helplessness tied to digital media’s prevalence in our daily lives and practical ways to retrain your nervous system to disengage with tech in favor of human connection.

I am so grateful that Douglas Rushkoff is in the world. Sometimes, he is the only voice I can listen to in the endless information jungle. So much heart, so much sense. Thank you Douglas, you restore my faith in humanity! Team human FTW!

This conversation is so important, I don’t know if you all realize it or not - I’m sure you do. Douglas and his history and this conversation needs to be main stream. It needs to be a documentary - I don’t think people realize how they all came to live in this so-called virtual, warped reality. I bet Mayim and Jonathan could work with Douglas and make a stellar documentary - a absolute main stream documentary. This history, & this 100% necessary information needs to be presented well beyond your amazing podcast. Great show. Don’t let this one get away. This is too important not to make main stream. Seriously. I was born in the 40s, I grew up in the 60s in Silicon Valley when it was fruit orchards - before they were destroyed for silicon chips. Douglas, you mentioned you want to talk to some people that are not mean stream etc; let’s talk.

Asking if this episode is “Mental Health” related? ABSOLUTELY YES! If you want actively participate and do your own part towards ensuring what our future as species be and getting involved about what we collectively decide and what kind of world we’ll live in. If you want to be a part of the enormous power of Human Connection (that mankind was never so aware of it as is now), a member of this TEAM HUMAN, while internalizing the right way to use the tech we have, knowing about the insane way economy grows and if or how we must de-escalte ourselves/world or not, this episode touches all the piano keys of MENTAL HEALTH. In caps. Still mouthdropped after watching twice this episode, while trying to digest all the wisdom contained in it. WOW!

Fan of the show since day 1 here. I love your topics and your guests. Jonathan has important information to share. We listeners want to hear more from him. We especially want to hear the end of sentences he already started. Please can we let him finish. Thank you for considering.

“I kinda wish I didn’t know” I feel the same way Mayim. Love the energy and insight Douglas shared. I wish I could be positive again. I used to be. I too feel like “I was born in the wrong time”. Haaa.

That is an amazing analysis by Douglas Rushkoff. It gives listeners a very thorough understanding of how modern day capitalism is inhernently responsible for many social ills including mental health. Well done!

Such a good episode and I really related to the question of ... what do we do with this information, and it's so important to take time away, disconnect.
