And now that we know the whole story, it's even funnier! Loved ALL the cast on that show, every one of them, but I especially identified with Vicki because she's closest in age to me. Vicki's deadpan, ticked-off delivery sold the final punchline! Fans of the show will remember how her character in the recurring Family sketches was the crotchety old Mama, Carol's character's mother, although Vicki was 16 years younger. Here, Carol is 45, Vicki is 29, and it's the show's last season in 1978. The two enjoyed a long friendship, starting when a 17-year-old Vicki sent Carol a fan letter, and Carol decided to cast the teen as her younger sister on the show, in 1967 after Vicki turned 18. Now aged 90 and 74 respectively, these two great ladies will always be lovingly remembered by the fans.

@@kevinmcgiffin10I grew up watching the show with my family, and I think all of us that did are very fortunate. Comedy is very subjective and is also dependent on context. Not just in the immediate, but the culture and the times that people live in. Compared to today, the seventies were a more innocent time and there was a place for this kind of humor. However and quite unfortunately, we live in a much different world today. As a result, humor, which to a large degree exists as a form of relief from stressful circumstances, has also changed dramatically and there is very little place for this more innocent form of comedy.

Sorry but that's not even remotely true. I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show and Mama's Family and I always hit up KZbin every few months to watch cast bust ups during some of the funniest sketches to ever hit television audiences and I know a ton of people my age and younger who do the same. Gene Wilder, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman were Gods of sketch comedy and comedic timing and you can plainly see their influence in shows like Madtv and SNL and they are terribly missed by millions even in this age of Netflix "comedy" specials and social media content creators. Also can't forget about the absolute legends who are still with us in Carol, Vicki, Mel Brooks and Dick Van Dyke.

This is kind of a bittersweet thing to watch. My mother loved that show, and that bit was her all-time favorite T.V. Moments. She loved to tell people about it. In fact, that was the last thing she ever did. She was in the hospital recovering from a major heart attack. My brother and a family friend were visiting her and she was talking about that skit. When she finished the story, she laid back and she was gone. It hurt to see her go, but a few months later I was discussing her passing with a coworker and I said, "she finished her story and then she was gone." There's just something beautiful about that realization and the fact that this was the last story she wanted to tell.

Why can't comedy be this good again? Why do we as viewers have to suffer through the most atrocious "comedy" today where EVERYTHING has to be some perverted (how many wiener or muff jokes do "writers" have to have to get a laugh?), sick, toilet humor? This is why The Carol Burnett Show is such a cherished classic. This was the best of the best in sketch comedy and shows the level of talent that we will NEVER see again. When I was but a kid, my father, worked for the parks department, in Oakland California. When an elephant died, and the autopsy had been concluded, my father transported the carcass, via heavy equipment, up into the hills, overlooking the zoo, and met a few others up there, as an impromptu funeral, for the creature. He'd already had dug a hole, with a "Backhoe" and used that same bit of equipment, to place the dead animal, into the ground. Well, the hole was not so deep, as needed. The Elephant's tail, had stiffened beyond rigormortus. It stuck up, like a flag, over the Elephant's body. My dad, drew a machete, from the equipment's utility tool box (Normally, for clearing away, small brush and undergrowth, about the various parks, hed be assigned to). With blade in hand, he intended to cut off the fallen beast's tail, and bury it, with the rest of the Elephant. He was stopped, when the Elephant handler, threw himself, upon the remains of the pachyderm! Sprawled across the rump, of the dead elephant, he cried out, "Dont you dare, hurt her!" One of the attendees, was his park supervisor. He calmed the man down, talked him off the beast's butt. My dad was told, to put the machete away, bury the beast, leaving the tail, alone. So my dad did as instructed, and as he all but finished, burying the animal, two guys, with a truck bed of rocks, and towing a small mixer of concrete, built a marker, around the standing tail. And the handler, crying, the whole time. True story. So when Tim spoke of the handler and the elephant, my dad's experience, came to mind.

Was it a baby elephant? OCT. 8, 1996: Kijana, the baby African elephant that the Oakland Zoo spent the last 11 months painstakingly hand-rearing, died suddenly early Monday morning from shock brought on by a bacterial infection in his intestines. Nearly a year after zookeepers were surprised one morning by the appearance of the newborn elephant, they were just as stunned by his death. “This elephant spiked a fever at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and it was dead 12 hours later,” said Joel Parrott, the executive director of the zoo. On Sunday morning, keepers noticed that Kijana “didn’t seem right,” he said. By the afternoon, he had a mild fever of 101 and Parrott instructed that Kijana, whose walks outdoors had become a popular attraction at the zoo, be taken “off exhibit.” The zoo began to administer antibiotics and oral fluids and continued the treatment into the night. As Kijana often did, he spent Sunday night nuzzling Colleen Kinzley, the zoo’s curator who became the elephant’s favorite night nurse and handler. About 3 a.m. he let out the low rumble that elephant handlers take as a sign of contentment and lay down. Kinzley thought he was falling asleep. When she realized he had stopped breathing, she called Parrott to the zoo. “She was pretty distraught,” Parrott said of Kinzley. “It’s been hard for all of us, but this has been real hard on Colleen. She really bonded with that elephant." ...From the moment that Kijana’s skittish mother, Lisa, kicked him away out of fear, the zoo spared no effort to raise him. A rotating staff of handlers and volunteers cared for the elephant around the clock, feeding him by bottle, cleaning up after him, baby-sitting him through the night and charting his every mood and activity. Most important, the zoo tried to replicate the mother’s milk so crucial to an elephant’s upbringing, buying a specially made formula from a Canadian company and supplementing it with some real elephant milk they were able to obtain from another elephant at the zoo. With the exception of a couple of mild bouts of diarrhea, Kijana appeared to be healthy, gaining about a pound or two a day. At the time of his death, he was drinking about 60 to 70 pints of formula a day, weighed about 625 pounds and stood 4 feet tall. Kijana followed Kinzley around as if she were his mother, and on the several nights a week that she baby-sat him, he would reach over with his trunk to tweak her bangs. “He loves hair,” Kinzley said last month about her young charge. “His trunk is stronger now and he has really good control of it. He’ll get hold of a little wisp of hair and almost yank it out of your head.” Kijana was in many ways an overgrown baby. He woke up continually through the night demanding to be fed formula. But the head-butting that was playful at 300 pounds was dangerous at 600, so his trainers had gradually taught him to stop. A couple of hours after Kijana’s death, Kinzley led Lisa down to the barn where her baby lay dead. There, Lisa gently fondled him with her trunk. Kinzley assisted Parrott at a necropsy conducted Monday morning. ...The Oakland Zoo, which had seen a surge in visitors since the arrival of Kijana, had been planning a big first birthday celebration. Instead, the elephant will be buried in the back of the zoo grounds, where other animals are buried.

@@vidpie Oh no....this was back, in the 1970's (I'm an old guy, myself, now) I tried to look on-line, for records or reports of it. But back then, Elephant passing weren't front page material, like today. Oldest records I could find, were back in the 90's, a bit after my dad's retirement. 🐘

Tim Conway was one of the best comedians to ever grace the little screen. WHen he is paired up with Harvey or Don Knotts, hilarity ensues and he KNOWS what buttons to press to get the co-star going. Look at all the old man sketches with Tim and Harvey, especially the fireman skit. Chaffed from sliding down the pole. The walk, the CPR. Harvey couldn't hold back. Pure comedic genius and not once was a dirty word used, well, except for Vikki in this skit, which was the icing on the cake and SO appropriate.

Back in the mid-80's I was attending a boarding school in PA. One day, going by the school office, I just happened to mention to the school secretary that she reminded me of Vickie Lawrence, and her reply was "Well thank you Dave, you picked the younger one." It wasn't until a few years ago did I finally realize just HOW younger she was.

@@davegreenlaw5654 I've had that happen. Something happens when you're a child, then many many years later you realize what you experienced as a child was not what you thought it was. I had a horrifying experience like that. As a child, while playing in a park I impaled my fake foot on a nail. The nail had been hammered through a 2X4 that was under sand. The park had opened that day once it's construction was compete. I had assumed the nail had been left by a careless construction worker. I just thought it was lucky it happened to me. If any other kid impaled their foot, they would have been badly injured. 20 years later I saw a news report. Some sick MF had glued razorblades on playground equipment in placed where kids would put their hands. Several kids had been injured with 2 of the kids losing a finger. That was when I realized that nail was no accident. Someone had tried to hurt me, and I was really pissed off. Now I was even more glad it had happened to me. I think the person who set the trap even saw me impale my foot. The woman had been watching me play. When she saw what had happened she just looked at me with her mouth open. She had no way of knowing I was an amputee, so she had no way to understand why I wasn't hurt. I hope she went to her grave never understand why I wasn't hurt. .I
