I have looked at the earlier AMD offerings and, as I think you have found, felt that apart from initial cost they had no significant benefits over the similar Intel variants and didn't have the same grunt for the power consumption - disadvantages outweigh the advantages really. I have recently got my hands on a 805 G6 with a Ryzen 5 pro 4650GE in it and, for the price I paid, that promises to give more advantages over a similarly priced Intel box ... but that's to be tested.

Let me know how that works out. I grabbed that G3 because I was intrigued with how odd it was and I figured a cheap way to check out an AMD unit.

You can update the processor to an A12 9800e, which I have in mine, but that’s as high as you can go currently.

What do you use your unit for?
@thomasburnett47126 күн бұрын
@ Bought it as a barebones home for old parts, including the processor, also tried my hand at repairing a realtime clock battery holder. It works great. If I keep it, I’ll install Linuxmint once Win10 goes extinct.

These old units are great for experimenting. If things go wrong at least you're not out 100s of dollars
@thomasburnett47126 күн бұрын
@ I strongly suspect HP could make it compatible with Ryzen with a BIOS tweak if they chose to do so, but they just don’t have any incentive to do so.

I have a 705 G4 with a 2400ge, I got it off ebay and it came with the RX 560 gpu installed, I don't think they knew what they had but I'm a happy camper. about to upgrade to a G5 with a 3400g since I found it "cheap", so why not. (should be able to swap over the gpu and I gain an extra nvme slot)
@handmedowntech3 ай бұрын
Now that's the kind of eBay purchase I'd like to have. Do you use the GPU for anything?

Thanx for the video. Wht do these organizations junk these units?? I thought because of win 11 but I see your one was running it.

Lots of companies don't want to keep things past a couple of years - most of these come with 3 year warranties. I've used Windows 11 (and received updates) and G1 to G4 - with my main machine being a G3

Got about 1.3w at power off and sleep. After logging into windows it was at 38w and on heavy load, 100% it averaged in the 50w range with spikes up to 61.

Inside I have one memory plate 8GB DDR4 2133 all ok . I would like to replace it with another memory with a different frequency, for example 2400MHz ,2666MHz ,3200MHz. pc will work better or not?
@handmedowntech3 ай бұрын
Couple things. How fast the memory can operate is based on the CPU so if the CPU can only handle 2133 then a 3200 is not worth it. For the best performance I'd just get a second 8gb stick so you have 16gb of dual channel memory.
@Yandarval3 ай бұрын
Interesting. The CPU has been swapped out. As the 705 G3s have 9 series CPUs officially listed. Top CPU is the AMD PRO A12-9800E with AMD Radeon R7 graphics. You will need a 6th Gen is you want to try a Ryzen. The G3 does not support them.
@GizmoTheGreen3 ай бұрын
a shame they (seemingly) lock it down to certain cpu's in software, my G4 should be a normal b350 chipset so slapping a 5600(g) in it would be amazing.
