Listening to the 5’s videos are so entertaining because you can explain my husband so well. The dump truck analogy is right on. We are at social gatherings and he goes on and on about something and people are politely waiting for him to end. He doesn’t pick up on the social cue that no one cares. 😂 yet on the flip side, he has no patience to listen to others talk about something he doesn’t care about.

I just discovered the enneagram and have been trying to actively incorporate emotion into my life and relationships. There's an anxiety to it (which I understand is the ego/personality fighting back), but it's one of the most gratifying things I've ever done. It's a whole new world to explore, and it adds richness to my life.

The mad scientist working in his secret lair... LOL. Now THAT is right on the bullseye. As a 5 who is can laugh at all the mistakes/social blunders described in this video because they were me when I was younger, I can say that the best way for a 5 to get ahead in life is to develop their social and emotional intelligence. That is our weakness by nature. Develop that as much as you possibly can, and it will allow you to exercise your strengths and really get ahead in life, really do great things. If you're not good socially, it doesn't matter how smart and knowledgeable you are, other people will not want to work with you. Develop yourself in every area so that you can exercise your strengths.

My most successful instance of leadership was when I got hired on to teach at a flight school that was floundering. There wasn't any time to plan on how to fix things, I had to focus on putting out the fires that I could and leaving some of the less important issues for later. I took on a "lead from the front" style, and I was able to fix so many issues from the back office, to the front desk, to aircraft maintenance. I essentially went to each department and asked what they thought needed to be done and we hammered out plans to enact fixes and I checked in regularly to see how they felt the changes were going. I also trained people outside my department when they were struggling with how to use certain programs and new practices. I quickly got promoted to Asst Chief and essentially ran the school and expanded it through the pandemic.

Being a 5 I laughed so hard when you said, “nobody cares Martha!” because I’m totally guilty of just getting on a topic and dumping information. Luckily I have a partner that just sits there and goes, “ok, that’s nice.” 😂😂😂

INFJs and INTPs are pretty universally 5's, usually 5w4. I am INTP and my wife is INFJ and we both think 5 is our wing, for sure. We both test pretty high for 9 too, though, so I don't prefer this system. Enneagram seems more focused on feelers and extroverts (Not surprising with its Christian/organized religion ties) whereas MBTI/Jungian theory fits intuitive a bit better. (And has more room for both thinkers and feelers, but defines feeling a little less than enneagram)

I agree with most of this (lol coming in like a 5) except for one small, but important caviot. For me, can't really speak to others, when I back my dump truck of information on to others it's not to show off what I know. It's in an attempt to be helpful. More of a: "I have this information that you don't. Perhaps this information will be helpful in your decision making or be able to correct a misconception. Therefore, I will share my knowledge with you. Yay! I helped." Though, I get the impression that most people see it as showing off or as an attack of sorts, so...not so yay.

Like the info but this is a great example of WHY 5's (INTPs for my experience) withdraw. If you're someone that doesn't like what other people need/demand out of you, the only logical course is to withdraw. Extroverts and people like this host (Tom) should attempt to cross the aisle a little more and come towards us. Not that it's OK to stay sheltered in your house forever, but I really cannot express in a single YT comment how toxic and destructive to my own self worth it's been with a lifetime of constant criticism from extroverts and outgoing types who think I am wrong and broken. Simply because I do not go out of my way to serve THEIR needs, yet rarely take even a single step in my direction. Or if they DO, it's only with a begrudging resignation of "leaving me alone" or whatever. Which is, many time, EVEN WORSE. You get the message: Ok, FINE, you FORCE ME, I'll give you what you NEED! Ugh! You're soooo inconvenient for ME! Regardless of the intention, this is the received message. WHen you get this message from someone, surely even you non 5's/introverted types can understand that, from our perspective, we are doing the only thing that makes any sense in our reality. Just so all ya'll extro's know.

I think 5s can hold information when they see the futility in sharing it with someone that is too closed off to hear it or can tell they don't care, also struggling with have I gotten enough information that it is worthy of presenting yet, or in the trap of the love of gathering so much that there isn't time or to share it, or waiting to make novel connections and find that niche that it's worthy of sharing

Oh god, the “dumping information” part, was actually painful to listen too, I know this too well... It’s like you’ve spent all this time learning and analyzing everything about this (probably stupid and unimportant) topic and you finally wanna share the results and you just get hit with the “I don’t care” and “I didn’t ask for this”... Hey Tom, I'm an INTJ 5w4 and I got pretty lucky because my niche is clinical, developmental, and social psychology. I'm sure I'm an INTJ because I resonate the most with one. But here's the thing, I'm a 5w4. I'd assume most INTJ type 5's fall into the 5w6 category and really focus on data and facts but if you knew me I'm clearly a 5w4. I LOVE the lore of games like Dark Souls and Destiny and have always had an interest in philosophical ideologies and things of the like(greatly involving psychology and why I think the way I do and everything that goes into it). I focus a lot on esoteric and hard to grasp subjects that can be viewed in many different angles. My friends have always joked with me about being a conspiracy theorist and talking about hard to grasp subjects such as Carl Jung's teachings. Anyways, I'm sure of my types. The problem I'm facing is finding the Hero's path(I'm 17 by the way). I want to be able to successfully integrate and acquire the positive traits of an 8, but I'm having trouble finding my path of healing. Again, I'm an INTJ 5w4 and my niche is psychology. One of the biggest problems I've come across in myself is that I'll acquire a ton of information I know will help a great deal of people and possibly even reform or even save lives for the better, but I can't clearly get the information across. A lot of times I'll lock up a little and be stingy with my information because I know the person I'm talking to won't be able to take it all in and process it. I desperately want to mature into myself to where I can clearly elucidate and clarify complex and 'theoretical' topics that I delve into such as things like the enneagram, psychology, and understanding the shadow(Carl Jung's teachings). I just don't know where exactly to start and I was wondering if you could give me a little insight to what type of action I could take to develop into a higher version of myself and shed myself of negative feelings such as insecurity and loneliness and become more empathetic and authentic(things I've had trouble with in the past). Any insights as to how I could become a better speaker and feel and understand my emotions a little better? Or are there any steps I could take? Or any links you have for the development of a Type 5 INTJ? And by the way your videos have already helped me more than you could imagine. They've given me a catalyst to heal my repressed emotions and bring my shadow to light.

Wow, this is an incredible comment. Very well written as well. Part of the 5 going to 8 is that they are able to articulate and communicate their information well, as you have done here. They move from the withdrawn 5 space to the assertive 8 space. When you speak with others consider that you are probably going to have to summarize information into smaller bytes for them to take it in. Also try to pay attention to social norms such as greeting rituals and etiquette. Small talk and social pleasantries, no matter how insignificant they might seem, is the grease on the wheels of relationships.

Dr. Tom LaHue I really appreciate it. I’ll start working on doing that because something I’ve noticed is that I can build relationships, but I’m not even close to being consistent with them. I’ll spark an interest in someone and then feel almost fake, like I have to put on a show of me being more outgoing and sociable. But as I integrate more into an 8 I’m sure these minor things will fall into place. Anyways thanks again, you’re helping me more than you realize👍🏻

5w4. I don't agree the fear of the outside word. I moved to the mountains as an 18 year old. I skied the some of biggest terrain parks in the country, skied out of bounds and took a lot of risks. Now hike deep in the woods in pursuit of whitetail deer. I put myself in dangerous situations often and always looking for the next adventure. I am particular about who I spend my time and energy on. I like off beat passionate people. I Have been accused of being over invested in my hobbies. I think I'm good in most social situations and am very aware of what is going on with others. I also don't agree with the 'preservation of energy' I'm almost always on tilt with my time, money and energy.

Are fives just grey rocking it through life? Especially that metaphor where a five is a village hermit spending all their time learning how to cast spells against a dragon. It really reminds me of a grey rocking strategy (hermit) + trying to figure out how to handle a volatile narcissist (dragon) once and for all.

No high FIVE for you Doc. Fives are the most misunderstood types of all types...primarily because we don't fit your mold...the box you are trying to put is in to cater to the general population's value system. If you Label me...if you put me in a box...you negate and limit me said Keigegaard. You miss out all the possibilities that I can be. As a Five, I like the freedom to flow in all that IS. We don't get stuck on any one tree. We enjoy the whole forest. And yes, we enjoy hugs...you just don't get to decide when and where. And I do not apologize for that. We live in hypersensitive times...where people are needy and clingy...the age of coddling and the death of Tough Love. Sad. However, we care about our fellow beings and our planet...but I don't have to show you that by protesting and holding up a picket sign. I help by changing myself...my energy habits. I help by being self-aware and making adjustments in my life, considering all of life. We are are interdependent after all. No person is an island...not even Fives. We KNOW that...trust me. To all my FIVES...I send you a HIGH FIVE!! Stay focused, imaginative, and curious!

Some parts of this video , i cannot relate, because of my 4 influence. i'm either 5w4 or 4w5 and I'm ISFP. I'm equally as emotional as I am detached. I have difficulties with boundaries. I don't awkward people out as I'm really nice person to be with. I do have issues navigating powerfully in social network and within an organisation and hierachy because i tend to be loner. Even when I try to be invisible, i tend to stand out because of my E4 dressing style. I'm not really a computer game nerd kind of person, though i did used to play some computer games like Lara Croft and The Sims. and yup, i love to do research.

Chrislynn Sharp hey, you do you boo! One of my pet peeves happens to be labeling people; honestly, it’s my biggest struggle with the enneagram. A lot of Christians use it to “understand” themselves better, but the Truth is each one of us is uniquely made in the image of God. Not one of us is the same, we are are all so complex, and I believe the enneagram creates limits for people, even excuses for ungodly behavior. But hey, that’s just one human’s opinion.

INFJ 5 somehow I doubt it, INTJ I can see it but being an INFJ is almost totally against being a five. Most important INFJs who believe they’re fives are just fours

GainFitnessSystems I am an INFJ 5w4. I’m a text book 5. If you spend 5 minutes with me you would have no doubt. That’s why you will find that the INFJ will withdraw if they feel emotionally overloaded. They are considered a paradox. The 5w4 has a head/heart battle going on at all times.

What you’re describing is more 4 than five if I’m honest, with five there’s no battle between head and heart it’s all head and zero heart, it takes a lot digging to find the heart of a five...

@@kchild71 You don't read like an INFJ at all. Type 5, sure. Everybody wants to be "special", but assigning the ego is not how it happens.

Dr LaHue, I'm a Five, would you advise me to include that information in my CV? Or do you think it would be rediculous?
@Scents4em
@Scents4em 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the job you are seeking. If you are looking for a people-oriented job, it may be beneficial. For a technical job, it may not matter or be appropriate. As fives, we have a desire to present the piece of information that will tell readers everything they need to know. Unfortunately, it’s usually not that easy. BUT, if a Five reads your CV perhaps they will be more interested in interviewing you! I used my MBTI in a CV for a job as a clinical social worker and got the job! Would it work as well if I was applying to be an engineer?....maybe not 🙂

What scientific basis does the Enneagram have?
@twlahue
@twlahue Жыл бұрын
The Enneagram is not widely accepted within the psychological or psychiatric academic communities as being scientifically validated. Unlike psychological typologies that have seen extensive research, like the Big Five Personality Traits, the Enneagram is primarily a tool used in the realm of personal development and spirituality. The Enneagram was developed without an evidence-based scientific approach, and rather emerged from a mix of spiritual traditions and philosophical concepts. However, this doesn't mean it's without value. Many people find it a helpful tool for introspection, self-awareness, and understanding others, and some preliminary studies have suggested potential correlations with other psychological typologies. If you're using the Enneagram as a tool for personal growth or to understand others better, it can certainly be useful. But keep in mind that it doesn't have the same level of empirical support as some other personality models, and it should not be used as a diagnostic tool or as a substitute for professional psychological help. As always, new research may continue to shape our understanding of the Enneagram and its utility.
