Ok. So I see a lot of comments about Ian not calling himself black and referring to himself as Afro Latino or Hispanic. And to understand why the term Afro Latino is used and not black amongst Hispanic communities, we need a little history lesson and we need to define race and ethnicity. Race is a social construct used to categorize different groups of people that share physical and/or cultural traits. And ethnicity is a shared culture, language, religion amongst a group of people. For example, “white” being a term used to describe a person with light/fair skin and of European/Caucasian descent. An Englishman may refer to himself as “white”, and a Russian man may also do the same. Their features are similar in comparison to other phenotypic categories. But when speaking to one another they may find they have very little in common in terms of culture, language, religion and so will speak about themselves in reference to their ethnicity/nationality. So people of the same race do not exclusively share the same ethnicity. In the United States, calling someone “black” is very much synonymously used (and most of the time interchangeably) with African American, a phrase used to describe someone of usually sub Saharan descent whose ancestor was a slave to what was the at the time the thirteen colonies and later its expanding territory. The term was used regardless of skin tone variations amongst slaves and or offspring of slave women and European slave owners. That is one of the reasons why today actress Viola Davis and television personality Tyra Banks are both in the same racial category (“black”) despite their differences in skin tone and facial features. The second reason why Davis and Banks are called “black” is because there is shared culture amongst the descendants of enslaved Africans in the US. In spite of being enslaved a culture, language, was able to emerge creating an ethnic identity. So in the United States “black” is a racial and ethnic/cultural identity. The United States made it very clear who was “black”, by passing laws that anyone whose mother was a slave was also “black” and thus a slave, paper bag testing, pencil testing, etc. The Spanish had a much more detailed take on race. They created a caste system based on the persons ancestry and their current physical features. While miscegenation was strictly forbidden in the English territories (although ignored in cases of rape), it was quite common to be of mixed race in the Spanish Americas. And so different words were created to describe the different variations in physical features and a persons traceable ancestry. The highest position in the cast system or “sistema de la castas” was to have European features or to be of a mainly European descent, and this of course affected your social and economical position in society. This is were the phrase “mejorando la raza” or “bettering the race”comes in to play. It encompasses the idea that someone with more African/Native features should “better” themselves by having children with someone whose features are more European in the hopes that the child will appear either less African or Native. And to this day in South/Latin America there are multiple terms and categories that don’t exist in the US to describe a persons skin tone and facial features. If Banks or Davis were to travel to South America they would not be put in the same racial group because of this. This caste system was later pushed aside in favor of a national identity. This allowed people from different caste to unite under one identity. And allowed the Spanish colonies to liberate themselves from Spain. This is why Hispanics/Latinos (Hispanic/Latino being a loose term in the US used to describe someone from a Southern/Central American country particularly Spanish, Portuguese, or French speaking) will refer to their national identity as their race/ethnicity. And with further questioning might use a phrase/term describing their skin tone or racial category. The removal of the caste system did not mean that discriminatory practices against darker skinned Hispanics did not happen nor do not happen to this day. And because of the different racial practices between the colonies in the present day, when dark or darker skinned Hispanics/Latinos move to the US many are confused by the catch all term “black” (because of the caste system). And since “black” is also a ethnic identity, it even furthers the divide and struggle to connect between communities because the language/culture/food of a “black” (African American) is not the same as a “black” Dominican, Colombian, Mexican etc. (“black” in this case used to describe a person of whose features are majority African). (Think Rap vs Merengue, Jazz vs Bossa Nova etc) To bring social awareness to the struggles dark skinned Hispanics/Latinos face and to acknowledge and feel proud of their heritage the term Afro Latino was coined. TLDR; race and ethnicity are similar but not exclusive. There were different racial systems in place in the English, French, and Portuguese colonies at the time. You can be Afro Latino or refer to your country of origin instead. And this doesn’t mean you’re ashamed or shunning your race/identity.

You know white people live in the Caribbean too but they are not black because of the heat. It would take a long ass time for that to happen. People have always knew Afro Latinos were real, especially when it comes to Dominicans, it's just that 99% of Dominicans don't acknowledge it, so when you have some claiming black now, people are kinda skeptical.

The two labels that confuse everyone are black and white. Those two get confused for being a race when in fact they’re not. Those are colors. TECHNICALLY speaking.....keyword.... TECHNICALLY speaking black, white, and Mexican are not a race. Yes I know you will claim it is because that’s just how we identify with ourselves but you’re still wrong. My mom always tells me I’m Mexican when I was born in the USA but actually I’m a Chicano. The problem with these labels get messy when people mistaken Nationality, race, and ethnicity as the same thing as if being Mexican is a race when it’s not. Even my own mom thinks Mexican is a race and she was born in Mexico. So trust me when I say it can be confusing.

Everybody wants to be African American so they can use the N-word and Big- up African AMERICAN culture but they don't want to say that they are African American SMH. Who cares if someone mistakes you being African American. YOU ARE BLACK anyway.

That set is as tight as it gets--not a single word wasted. I especially love the way he gets laughs from the simplest pauses and perfectly timed simple words and phrases. "I'm not the kind of guy that thinks just because I paid $265 that you owe me sex... "...but..." (Goes into next punchline.) Gets a huge laugh just by the way he times "but." Does the same thing with "but it wasn't" when talking about the cruise. This guy's good. He minds the details.

Why is it so difficult for americans to separate two different concepts? Race and nationality. eg: Conan O'brian. Race: white. Nationality: american. This guys parents: Race: black. Nationality: dominican. Latino is not a race, as there are latinamerican people that are white, others are black, some are mixed, some are natives... It is so unbelievably simple that I don't know why does it seem so difficult to catch.

America isn't comfortable unless everything and everyone is labeled AND you're only American so long as the majority are okay with you. Case and point ,win a gold medal at the Olympics you'll see a bunch of white folks screaming "why are you saying he's is the first black person to win a medal in this event or in the winter olympics.he's just American goddammit". BUT let that same medal winner commit a crime then it's "YOU PEOPLE are responsible for every crime committed in America"
