"we had 44 Spanish people come to my wedding" gives me similar vibes to "I'm not racist I have 44 black friends" **EDIT cause some of y'all be real dumb** "44 friends from Spain" is similar to "I'm not racist I have 44 black friends" because people usually use statements like this as a PASS to excuse offensive behaviour. Regardless of your genetic makeup being white or not , I would assume that if you grew up in Spain/born there etc you would find a person trying to fake a Spanish accent/nationality/culture etc, strange and some might even find it offensive, especially since she benefitted from her FAKE heritage for so long, so it really doesn't matter white or black or Asian or wtv in this case. @fearghalmurelagaosullivan5296
@fearghalmurelagaosullivan5296 3 жыл бұрын
@@madrina1067 I wouldn't say all Spaniards are white as that disregards a lot of Spanish peoples ancestry. Spain is a melting pot of different cultures due to having been occupied by the Moors of Africa for so long. A lot of people in Spain have African ancestors, as well as some have Western Asian ancestory or both. Spain shares more DNA with North Africans than with the rest of Europe. I have family members who are dark-skinned and I have some who are white. So Spain is very diverse and is going to be even more diverse in the future due to an influx of Senegalese, Moroccan and Malian immigrants.

No, they can absolutely mean the same, since Hispanic is (relating to Spain or to Spanish-speaking countries, especially those of Latin America.) and Latina is ((in North America) a woman or girl of Latin American origin or descent.). So it really is the same thing. The word that you are looking for is Spanish, not Hispanic. "Spanish and Latina are not interchangeable." That is the accurate statement.

@@cozytimes4461 Yes! A lot of people get confused because of the usage thing. Here in Spain no one says "she's latina", you would say "she's latin-american" (because saying latino/a is weird because our language came from latin, therefore we're included in the label), but in USA they just use latino/a, which tends to lump southern-european people with latin-american people, even though we have bastly different experiences (we may be in the south, but we're still mostly caucasian, this is still Europe).

@@cozytimes4461 After reading your post, I have some questions and I would really like for you to educate me on it because you taught me something I didn’t know. Why do Hispanics (people from PR, Mexico, Honduras, other hispanic countries) call themselves Latino or Latina if the term is from Italy? Would that be considered cultural appropriation or something else? I’m really curious because honestly it’s all confusing to me 🥴. I’ve never heard a Hispanic-American or a Hispanic in general mention anythingggg about Italy and it seems like they claim the term as their own and some want you to address them by that term but if it’s not even their term (by origin) then what is the correct term for them? I’m sorry if I sound confusing 🥲.
@cozytimes4461
@cozytimes4461 2 жыл бұрын
@@sneakergoddess4120 of course thanks for your questions, basically Latino is any countries that speak languages derived from Latin or if the people or country have some relation to Italy theyre automatically Latino, so the Romance languages are Spanish, french, Italian, romanian and Portuguese that makes France, spain, Italy, portugal and Romania the first Latinos because these languages originated there, but of course Romance languages exist because of Italy so Italy was the first Latino and thanks to them Latinos exist today, hispanics call themselves Latinos but not only hispánics even haitians do, the reason is because these countries were colonized by france, spain and portugal which portugal, Spain and france are Latinos so since these countries like Puerto Rico were colonized by spain now their language is Spanish and they have Spanish blood so that makes Puerto Rico latino because their roots and language comes from Latin European countries, same as haiti they’re Latino because they were colonized by france which france is a Latino country so that made haiti Latino too, so I wouldn’t be cultural appropriation since they do have the blood and the language and the culture of Latin Europeans because Latin America is like 90% European culture from france, Spain, Italy and their language is from Latin romance languages, the thing why you haven’t heard from a (Latino American) that Italy is Latino is because Latino Americans from the USA are ignorant being honest. They don’t know what latino means, most Latino Americans that were born in the USA don’t have the culture of actual Latinos they think latino refers to Latin America but they don’t even know why Latin America is called Latin America , they have no idea what latino is, that’s why an actual Latin America. from like Argentina etc would know what latino means they can easily tell you that Italians are Latinos, I’m Venezuelan myself and here when we say Latinos we refer to spain or Italy etc, we know that we Latin Americans are Latinos if because of them. Latin America is called Latin America because we speak the Romance languages derived from Latin and who gave us these languages? Latin European countries like Spain, france and portugal, I suggest you to search latin europe in google it says more about this. Btw sorry I know I sound confusing but this is not my first lnfuage

No, that's not true. It totally depends on the circumstances. If you were born in A and moved to B as a baby/toddler, but your parents still speak language A all the time and maybe your environment in country B is full of people speaking language A, than it's pretty likely to still have an accent. Some people don't speak any language without the accent of another they also speak. I am Russian German, moved to Germany when I was 3 and within a few months forgot Russian and only spoke German. I didn't have a full accent, but had a bit of Russian intonation as long as I lived with at home. Most people couldn't hear/recognize it or just saw it as my personal way of speaking. But a few people recognized it and immediately asked if I was Russian German/Russian. Only when I moved out it disappeared. But when I am more emotional the Russian intonation can creep in again. (For example saying "nEeIn" instead of Nein. ^^) Many Russian German people I know have a bit of a Russian accent, even though some were born in Germany. But they spoke Russian with their parents a lot or all the time and lived in predominantly Russian communities. Some of them have a German accent in their Russian and a Russian accent in their German. Also many other people who are 2. or 3. generation migrants, but still have an accent or certain subtleties from the language of their parents or grandparents, because they mainly interact with other people from the country their parents/grandparents are from.

My dad has faced job discrimination because of his accent (complicated by his dyslexia) and even had to file a lawsuit against his past employer. I think this also even further complicates people thinking Spanish people are non-white with her going to that Latina magazine. No, we are not people of color and shouldn’t be used as stand-ins for representation. We did used to be viewed as non-white by the Nazis and even during early waves of U.S. immigration, and I do think for a lot of people, they are still confused. As a Spainsh woman: I'm flattered that she loves our culture so much that she learnt the language and thaught it to her children (they have Spanish names, which I find weird), but I'm a little confused as to why she would repeatedly say she was born here. Especially because you could just get the double nationality like Martin Sheen or just say she loves Spain bc she spent time there like Gwyneth Paltrow. Also, I didn't know being Spanish was considered "diverse" because we are European and mostly white, but I don't know if that's just her thinking we are latinos. In conclusion: fair enough, I'm a little lost but fair enough 🤣

I understand the names thing. Some names are just beautiful, you know? I don't know what her kids' names are, but I'm sure she likes the names. Maybe because they're spanish names, maybe not. Personally, I really like the names like Cerys, Llewellyn, Bronwyn, etc. They're all Welsh names, and I think they're beautiful, even if I have literally no connection with Wales, or Welsh culture. I think I would find them even prettier if I did. So I don't find the names thing weird, or learning Spanish and teaching it to her kids, but the rest was too far.

I’m Irish and Mexican, but I really like the names Gaetano (Italian name for boys) and Celestine (French name for girls) as middle names for my future kids, so I don’t think that is weird at all. As someone who is biracial, I really do love when people of different races appreciate my culture. As long as they aren’t racist, I won’t care if a white person wants to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos or if an Asian person wants to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. My parents are immigrants from Nigeria. For years, they faced racism and discrimination for their skin, accents, & cultural differences while living in America. They feared my siblings and I would go through the same experience as them and chose not to teach us their native tongue because they feared we would develop an accent like them. Now, in my 20s, I'm trying to learn more about my culture and learn my native tongue because I want to be proud of where my family came from and pass it onto my future children. For her to go around and pretend to be someone she's not while others are dealing with horrific experiences for just existing is inexcusable. She benefited from the lie. She can brush it under the carpet and the public will forget about it and she can go on being famous. But we can't do that. Those of us born into those cultures can't take off our identities like an accessory and walk away unscathed. We deal with discrimination on a daily basis for just being us, but when privileged celebrities do it, they're trend setters and "brave." It's tiring to see this.

As an Spanish person I can tell exactly what this girl is trying to do. Mallorca is known to be a touristic city, so there are lots of very expensive houses and hotels for tourist. If I have to guess her parents were probably pretty rich and owned a house to spend the summer in Mallorca every year because that is super common there, so she did come to Spain a lot and probably had friends that spoke Spanish, because her Spanish is actually really good, but I guess since pretty much any touristic country like Spain hates American tourist (because they usually are the rudest not gonna lie) she realized that probably a lot of her friends didn't like other Americans like her, but she decided that because she spends a lot of time in Spain that she is pretty much Spanish at this point so that way she seems so much more interesting. In case anyone in the comments is confused: In English: Hispanic means a person from a Spanish speaking country and their descendants. Latino means a person from a Latin American country and their descendants. Spaniards aren’t Latine. They’re European. But Brazilians are Latine even though they don’t speak Spanish. So Brazilians aren’t Hispanic since they speak Portuguese. But most Latin American countries main language is Spanish so many people are both Hispanic and Latine. BUT in Spanish: Latino means a person from a country with Latin roots, while Latinoamericano is Latin American. So Southern Europeans in general could be considered Latino but not in the same context that’s used in English. In English we’d just call them Latin. Edit: I’m replacing Latinx with Latine.

“Latinx” is not a thing anyone outside of the US really uses since it’s very awkward to say and relies on English context and pronunciation of the letter x. Latino is generally seen as gender neutral, but Latine has also been offered as an alternative because -e is explicitly gender neutral and actually works with languages like Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, etc. where “Latinx” could be read like “Latinsh”, “Latins” or, rather counter-productively, “Latinha” 😅

@@p0lyxena Thankyou! I’m aware that I was using the word in context within the US since I figured D’Angelos audience is mainly American. But I definitely agree. Latine is much better and hopefully we stop using Latinx since it sounds so awkward 😂

@@p0lyxena I'm nonbinary, and I happily jump on anything gender neutral - it often comes with the territory. I couldn't figure out Latinx without saying, "Latine ex", Just using Latine without the excess...x is something I can totally do, especially/mainly because I'm not Latine, and I try to use the terms, etc that that culture/race prefers. This is too long, especially since I'm practically a double hermit right now. I can use it for media and Zoom calls. Thanks! 😸

Hi guys 💖 I’m latina and here’s why Spanish people aren’t latina. Latina is Latin America, it includes Brazil but doesn’t include Spain as it isn’t in Latin America. HISPANIC is Spanish Speaking Country, this doesn’t include Brazil but includes Spain. I really am confused as to why she was on Latina magazine even if she was from Spain.

Exacto! La única razón que la nominan a un Grammy Latino es porque su música es en español. A Beyoncé la nominar a un Grammy Latino (puede ser más de uno, no recuerdo bien de momento).
