I went out looking for a used garden tractor that I could use to replace my YT3000 as my main mower, and ended up with a old school GT6000 with the Hi/Lo trans and a sleeve hitch for $40.00 !

Had this same tractor, bought it new with dozer blade and mower deck. Cut grass and plowed snow for 15 yrs. Replaced starter,Mower deck mandrel,rear tires. Gave it to a friend, he still uses it to clear snow from his business parking lot. Worth every penny.

Just bought mine. Didn’t run owner said it runs with gas in the carb. So for fun I put gas in the tank. And a new air filter, fired right up. Going to clean it up and use it for off-roading.

I like these stories. Why does old always seem better? Of course this is not the case but there is something rewarding about getting and older workhorse tractor for cheap and fixing it up. As has been said before, the new ones don't compare in quality unless to go into the 5-8k range maybe. I saw the Troy Bilt Pony they sell at Tractor supply and HD for $2200 and it looks like a toy kids tractor, something you would buy little Johnny to learn on. Back in 2008 I bought a 1988 Wheel Horse 518-H, Onan engine and it mowed great and was built like a tank. They do eventually have problems and die but that is after 30 years or so of hard labor. I currently have a Craftsman GT5000 (Husqvarna) that I love but it is about 20 years old and needs a new engine. So now I am on the hunt for another GT........

Because for the last few generations that the old timers have been saying "everything is turning to shit" it turns out that it's not because they have become cynical with old age. It's because they saw how things were, and things actually are turning to shit.

cool, while back i picked up a couple gts, one a 86gt 2 with 18hp opposed twin horizontal, the other a 90's? gt6000 with 20 hp onan. well 86 was in by far worse shape, but 90s had a bad coil. so my gt6000 became a parts tractor for the gt 2, used the practically new deck, went thru and cleaned/ painted it, motor was full of water, but with cleaning it did run. its a beast, i pull my trailer out of the back yard, it digs right in. sometime id like a sleeve hitch and front plow on it.👍

Great machines. I miss mine a lot. Mine was an 88 model closeout in early 89...served me very well for 21 years before the engine failed. I'd love to find another one, only difference was mine had the 18HP Briggs & Stratton 2 cylinder engine and the 44 inch mower deck. That 2 speed transaxle was great for all sorts of work, with weights and chains it would do great for plowing too and attachments.
@FarpointFarms6 жыл бұрын
It's a really underrated work horse. I've pulled some pretty heavy loads with mine, and in 1 low its a beast!
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
Yes they were, they were a pretty dang good machine, and if they would have had an option for a locking differential and some agriculture tires they'd make a great tractor for small gardening projects for sure. I really want to find another one and set it up to use for gardening. The stuff they build now is too cheaply made to hold up to any actual pulling. Not sure how the larger John Deere Garden Tractors like the X500 series and X700 series would be maybe ok, but not the box store stuff.

Heads up, that doesn't have a peerless trans. That has a Roper 633a, 3 speed, high low, with square cut gears and needle bearings. Oil filled, and has 3 sets of planetary gears for the differential. Also has 1in axles with splined ends. The hubs are 5X4.5, same as Ford Rangers. I've got a 1992 GT 6000 that has the all metal hood and grill(it's my profile pic). It originally came with a horizontal Onan 20hp but I've converted it to a 18hp Briggs opposed twin pressure lubed vertical (PO got the tractor for the engine for his Craftsman FF).

Thanks for the heads up, and even more so about the info on the hubs. I've been thinking about a set of dual wheels for the rear of this one and that info is perfect timing!

I just picked up a GT 6000 ll with the 20hp Onon Engine. Tractor is in beautiful conditions with a low 247 hours. 2 issues. Engine cuts out if I engage the electric clutch for the mower (seller says he thinks the mower spindles may be frozen) second issue is the battery discharge light is on. (seller says it may be an alternator or something). If anyone has any experience with either issue I would much appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

I have the 1994 Sears Craftsman Diebard II LT4000. 42 Deck, 18HP Briggs, Gas tank sits under the seat. Sat in our family barn since I was a kid. I recently resurrected it, cleaned the carb, changed the oil, new tires, greased and changed the oil. What I found fascinating is for the size of the engine it does not require an oil filter…I love the “Made in the USA” sticker on the metal hood. Runs strong and that engine sounds like lion lol the neighbors love it.
