@@itzjay116 that's awesome. I think most people like MMA, whether they know it or not or have been exposed to it. I would estimate somewhere around 70%, there are some people who either don't care about sports at all, or are just eeked out by all violence and don't want to see it. And there are also the old school boxing fans, you know, the "sweet science" guys, but a lot of them can be swayed too. But any grappling heavy fight will set that back, there can be 3 straight fights that are mostly striking and then one with a lot of wrestling, and they'll be like nah, don't like it. Which I don't quite understand, because a lot of boxing matches turn out to be stalemates where they're mostly proding and clinching, that's just as boring as a mostly wrestling MMA fight if you're not into it. it's hilarious how the skill mom doesn't think it looks real, because the only violence she has ever seen was choreographed for a hollywood movie. i love how she also just outright refuses to accept that people competing in a world championship are elite athletes who have spent thousands of hours of hard training in order to master several disciplines of martial arts just to get into that octagon, meanwhile she probably couldn't even run 2 miles in half an hour.

Joan was spot on about the referee. In muay thai you see them diving to the ground to stop a fighters head from bouncing on the mat but in MMA you have the likes of Herb Dean standing at the side counting sheep while a fighter gets 20 years taken off their life with ground and pound
@Ashley123at Жыл бұрын
Incorrect, the refs are taught to step in when the fighter is not defending themselves and they do stop the fights when that happens.
@MrDylanm842 Жыл бұрын
@Ash-vg8px No, a ref is meant to step in when a fighter is unconscious, seriously injured (ie. A broken arm), not defending themselves or has tapped. It's ridiculous how many referees I've seen stand idly as a guy lies unconscious, taking 2-5 unnecessary shots simply because they're not paying enough attention to see the fighter is out. I pray you never officiate a fight
@rishab0B Жыл бұрын
The rules of Muay Thai cannot be applied to MMA. MT doesn't allow ground fights where as MMA does. So a ref cannot interfere when one is falling. Yes there are some refs who should've stopped fights sooner and then there's refs who get complained by the fighter for stopping the fight too soon. Go figure.

It's neat to see folks who may not have had prior knowledge or experience with the sport witness it for the first time. I wasn't very familiar with the UFC or MMA in general before my boyfriend walked me through the rules, forms and various techniques (with the help of FightFront and MMA on Point), and admittedly it was interesting to hear some of my early misconceptions echoed here (i.e. I remember thinking it seemed a bit chaotic and brutal at first, and I didn't understand how much thought and practice went into something like this primarily because I just didn't know what I was looking for.) Above all else though, I admired how quickly their opinions adapted and how often they asked questions. I hope at least a few of them keep watching, learning and maybe down the line become fans as well!! :)

@thisdude9363 Жыл бұрын
Just the elderly? You realize that the vast, overwhelming majority of the population has no formal martial training and are VERY influenced by fantasy and movies, right? This is a community of people who, at the very least, watch a lot of combat sports, and many who have trained. So at the very least, everyone has at least a slight idea what actual fighting looks like and what kind of skills it takes. The vast majority of people are just like that old woman, regardless of age. It's why people still think Medieval Knights somehow rode around in 300 pounds of metal while swinging 40 pound swords. Fantasy movies and video games feeding them a steady diet of the most ridiculous shit since their childhood, and they have no actual knowledge of the subject to counter these assumptions with.
