Breakfast cereal is a staple of many childhoods. Trying to get your parents to buy you the cool cereal with the fun and colorful box? Been there, done that! Now that Food Theory exists, I can go back and try to answer some of the questions that have haunted me since childhood. Questions like, what the heck do Apple Jacks actually taste like? They never say they taste just like apples despite it being in the name! So what flavor are they and WHY do they taste awfully close to their competition - Froot Loops? Get your cereal bowls ready, Theorists!

I remember eating them individually as a kid while I wasnt paying attention and noticed they tasted the same. When he mentioned the orange and green ones having different flavors my immediate thought was "i thought they were the same?" my entire life I thought everyone knew this. The only difference Ive ever tasted is some of them have less flavoring.

For when it came to the different colored Froot Loops, I believe that the different flavors idea are physiological more than anything else. I think that when you look at the colors, it automatically makes you think of a certain flavor. Kinda like how we compare certain colors to emotions. And because you think of that specific flavor and all of the flavors are mixed together, your brain automatically picks those specific colors and flavors out of all the others causing you to taste different flavors.

The “I swear all the colors taste different” is a great example of priming. All the froot loops have the same flavor but the commercials have primed you to believe that the blue ones are blueberry flavored and the red are cherry flavored , etc so when you see them individually and taste them your brain is able to pick up that flavor but it’s basically impossible to discern them blind because your brain doesn’t have the colors to associate the flavors to. Brilliant psychological tactics there Kellogg’s

So I used to work food production in a facility that made Clif bars, and a whole bunch of other brands of bars. In regards to the listing of ingredients, the fact that are weighted the same is pretty much 100%. The fact is, it could be done in multiple facilities, but in all reality it makes sense that it's just a secondary conveyer with a secondary hopper that pulls half the batch of fruit loops down into a cinnamon bath or whatever. The place that makes Clif bars, also makes those quaker baby bars, which are far better than clif bars lol.

“I swear they colors tasted different” They all taste the same it’s just your brain telling you they taste different based on the colors. There was a study done with jell-o where different favors of jell-o where died differently. Like grape was colored red. And most people thought that the grape jell-o was actually cherry just because their brains told them red should taste like cherry not grape. Now what about that for a new food theory 😆

The fruit loops having the same flavor reminds me of when my fifth grade teacher told me of an experiment. 4-6th grade are the grades that do the science fair stuff, and a 5th grader decided to see if the ketchup flavors where the same (this was when ketchup could be grape flavored or something). The kid had the teacher blind taste the different ketchups and guess, which yielded the same results MatPat got.

Here's my theory When our eyes see one color, we associate it with certain flavors. So if all of the loops have all of the flavors, the one we associate the color with will stick out. But if we don't see the color, we won't be able to associate a flavor, meaning that none of the flavors will stand out.

It's not even a theory, it's fact. It's color psychology. Colors are part of social constructs and we relate colors to specific things throughout life, so you are scientifically right. That's what helped collectors in prehistoric eras to avoid dangerous/poisonous/inedible plants.

MatPat does make a compelling case, but I’m surprised after the taste test results he didn’t delve into the science of color influencing our perception of food. “Food: Fact or Fiction” does a similar kind of blind taste test in the episode “Hungry Eyes” with cake that has different icing colors to demonstrate how seeing the color can make you think a flavor is present when it actually isn’t, especially based on psychological associations you may have with a specific color. That accounts for why MatPat thought the flavors tasted different from each other without the blindfold when clearly with the blindfold they all tasted the same. Maybe this is common knowledge or super obvious to some people, but I felt the need to throw my two cents out here anyway.

If the “Froot” flavor is just the 7 fruit flavors combined, I guess it would make sense that we can detect the different flavors… as long as we can see the color. If our mind sees red, we expect “cherry”, and since cherry is 1/7 of the flavor profile, our brain focuses on it and masks the other subtle flavors. But! With no visual clues brains to point our brain towards a certain flavor, no particular flavor will stand out and it will just taste like “froot”, which Matt seems to describe as generally a sugary, cardboard, citrus blend.
