The “I swear all the colors taste different” is a great example of priming. All the froot loops have the same flavor but the commercials have primed you to believe that the blue ones are blueberry flavored and the red are cherry flavored , etc so when you see them individually and taste them your brain is able to pick up that flavor but it’s basically impossible to discern them blind because your brain doesn’t have the colors to associate the flavors to. If the “Froot” flavor is just the 7 fruit flavors combined, I guess it would make sense that we can detect the different flavors… as long as we can see the color. If our mind sees red, we expect “cherry”, and since cherry is 1/7 of the flavor profile, our brain focuses on it and masks the other subtle flavors. But! With no visual clues brains to point our brain towards a certain flavor, no particular flavor will stand out and it will just taste like “froot”, which Matt seems to describe as generally a sugary, cardboard, citrus blend.

But if we don't see the color, we won't be able to associate a flavor, meaning that none of the flavors will stand out.

It's not even a theory, it's fact. It's color psychology. Colors are part of social constructs and we relate colors to specific things throughout life, so you are scientifically right. That's what helped collectors in prehistoric eras to avoid dangerous/poisonous/inedible plants.

MatPat does make a compelling case, but I’m surprised after the taste test results he didn’t delve into the science of color influencing our perception of food. “Food: Fact or Fiction” does a similar kind of blind taste test in the episode “Hungry Eyes” with cake that has different icing colors to demonstrate how seeing the color can make you think a flavor is present when it actually isn’t, especially based on psychological associations you may have with a specific color. That accounts for why MatPat thought the flavors tasted different from each other without the blindfold when clearly with the blindfold they all tasted the same. Maybe this is common knowledge or super obvious to some people, but I felt the need to throw my two cents out here anyway.

I've a theory that because he can see the colours and because the mixture of scents and flavors is *in* all of the loops, that there's sort of a 'confirmation bias' in which he 'blanks out' the other scents and flavors, only noticing what he expects to notice.
@Cinking_city3 жыл бұрын
They shouldn't smell different because they are all the same just with added coloring so I just think it's association Let me explain: you would typically associate lemons with a citrus flavour and a yellow coloring so if you see a yellow froot loop and are told it is lemon flavoured you're brain would trick you into thinking your smelling and or tasting citrus I don't know much about the human mind but I think I know that this is right? Idk google it 😅

Food Theory: Why does cold water taste better?

I don't have a better way to say this but is because your body is already hot. Cold water makes a shock in your tongue making it seems it taste better and give a sense of refreshment in your body temperature.

Actually, I agree with the act that fruit loops are just the same flavors regardless of which color. We only get that "colorful taste" of it since we associate the colors with the fruits that has the same identical color. For example, red cereal loops are just plain cereal. But since we see the red food coloring in it, we get to think that its strawberry flavor since we associated it with that specific cereal loop. after we identify what color the cereal loop is, our taste buds reacts to that specific flavor our minds want us to think about. And thats where our mind blends with what our taste buds what flavor it wants us to imagine.

It’s the placebo effect, by making every loop have all the fruit flavors it makes it so when they taste any color loop they will pick the faint piece of taste to accommodate it, that’s the reason they say they have flavors while looking at them and eating them but completely fail when they can’t see it
