I once dated a black man that once said something to me that had stayed in my mind and confused me for the longest time. After watching this video I can see why it did. He said to me, “i want you in my bed undressed with your light skin against mine.” When I heard that I remember being confused and frankly quite turned off cause I by no means found his comment romantic nor sexy either, whatever intention he had was beyond me. The part that confused me the most was that I have never considered myself light skinned despite being Latina, but I can see that colorism is real and that’s a huge disappointment. It’s a disappointment that black women have to continuously fight to feel appreciated, particularly by their own men. No woman despite their color, life expectancies or age should feel excluded from being loved. Black women should be loved and appreciated just as light skin women. All men were born out of a woman and it’s shame that many like to forget that. Stay strong my beautiful queens!

Two great examples of gas lighting! “You cant change what black men prefer” and “look better/step your game up.”They say all that gas lighting stuff to and around these non black women to our detriment. That’s why these non black women feel so comfortable saying things like this out loud. It should really make you black men feel some type of way when non black women talk about you and black women like this. It shows that black men don’t care about black people and their black sisters, mothers and grandmothers. If black men the supposedly leaders in our community are uplifting non black women it states that he doesn’t value his own blackness. When you speak that “preference” talk ask yourself why do you prefer?

Cyn is afro latina technically. She is just deluded like most Dominicans. Go over there and ask girls as dark as Amara la Negra what their race is. They will tell you they are Dominican because they conflate being "black" with being African American or African. Dark skinned afro latinas can be worse sometimes. Many want nothing to do with the concept of being black. It is more of a cultural issue than it is a racial/colorist one as mixed Dominicans also deny their black side.

@J Colón Maybe its because her black features are more pronounced but phenotypically her african ancestry stands out. Maybe it because back in brazil I see girls like her all the time and regard them as black. She looks like most light skinned black women. Compare her to the singer Mya. Most african americans are also mixed so saying she is mixed doesn't really say much.I don't think mixed and biracial are the same thing. Biracial is half and half to me. Being latino yourself you must know its almost never half and half with us due to the fact most of us also have native blood as well as african and european. With african americans its more straight forward african and european

Can we please stop acting like rappers and athletes are the end all be all representation of black masculinity? Success in those fields typically requires an especially pronounced form of toxic masculinity, so we really can't be surprised when they come out saying crazy things. It's not that black men who aren't rappers or athletes don't share some of those perceptions, but their occurrence is more varied. If this person is primarily selecting the rapper/athlete type, then her experiences and perceptions of black man will definitely be skewed. Black men who don't like hip hop or sports exist too and don't necessarily fit into these conversations in predictable ways. We need to also talk about the ways in which the perceptions that many black men embrace of Latinas are rooted in their history of racial oppression. Those stereotypes of being loud, hypersexual, crazy/violent, etc. are racist characterizations of Latinx people that are used to oppress them to this day (whether they have African ancestry or not). Even if the end result is "desirability" it's still a form of oppression. We can't act like the Joe Buddens of the world are trashing black women but somehow have Latinas best interests at heart at the same time. If his attitudes are oppressive to black women, they are likely oppressive to all women of color. I don't know anything at all about his music, but I would not be surprised if I were to find that he makes misogynistic comments frequently. I'm not trying to "AllLivesMatter" this because misogynoir is definitely real and more than worthy of specific attention, but I am saying that oppressive mindsets love company. I'm not sure how a black man could be fully on board with misogynoir but have no oppressive relation to other kinds of women as well.

My point is that the mentality you speak of is more prevalent in certain pockets of black men, and those men are overrepresented in the celebrity class because of how they make their money. Therefore, those men should not be the center of the conversation; addressing them is fine, but to treat them as typical does us all a disservice. The Name I Was Given I agree with you. As a black woman, I don't waste my time with men like this who don't have a healthy sense of who they are. I've always been a nerdy type and have never been into the flashy rapper or athletic types. These types tend to be very superficial and I wouldn't have anything in common with them besides skin tone. If they find certain Latinas more attractive because they want something to show off, that's their problem. And let's face it, they don't want just any Latina just because she's Latina. They want they kind that fits their stereotypical fantasy of the hot, crazy, freaky, feisty Latina.

So when we started goin out I asked him why he always went out with Latine only and he said He’d never go out with someone darker than him. I was like WTH like I didnt know what to think of that.. our relationship lastes a couple more of mnths and one of the reasons was I couldnt forget that answer. I think the problem with this mentality is low self esteem.. parents should raise their kids to be proud of their race/culture and respect others but also respect yourself.

Black men are often taught to devalue black women not just from society but from older black men in their families growing up. They grow up in a family where their fathers, uncles and grand fathers often rhapsodized about white and light skinned women. The athletes and performers they grow up admiring further confirm these beliefs. They are seen as prizes and achievements. Yet a lot of these same men get mad as hell whenever they see a black woman with a non-black partner.

Girl! I’m a medium skin Latina born and raised in Venezuela and you’re 100% right in everything you said. it even happens in Latino countries, colorism is STRONG in Latino community the more European you look the better because Latino man feel it’s not enough if you’re medium or dark skin you gotta be light with light eyes and straight hair , but when you move to the us and you start dating Americans (blacks and whites) you’re fetishized it feels like you’re light enough to be brought into his parents home but still ethnic enough to be considered “exotic” as I’ve been called many many times. Girl something I’ve learned is that you be whatever you gotta be and find happiness with someone who makes you happy and doesn’t just think “you’re exotic” I feel the girl you’re talking about in this videos is just projecting because In Latino community she will be treated as a dark skin black American woman. Much respect to all Black American women who have not only to prove themselves to other ethnicities but also to men from the own race you truly are queens and I hope someday ppl would stop the light skin bs and just love women for who they are. I totally agree about, Going where you are wanted. I rarely ever get any attention from black men. When I was doing the internet dating thing, 99% of the men that were hitting me up was....other. White, Latino, Middle Eastern, even Asian which I thought was interesting. If I did get a black guy, it was because he had mistaken me for being biracial. Once I told him I wasn't, he was gone. One guy actually argued with me over my heritage. I just HAD to be biracial. My hair is long, my nose is skinny and long, I'm 'light skinned'. (I am brown skinned....take pictures in the sun, you'll look lighter too) My mother finds it a compliment to be mistaken for being biracial. Which, there is so much to unpack there.......but. It seems like black women are not the ideal to black men, and so we as black women have to go where we are wanted. My boyfriend is white. I went where I could be myself. How weird and fucked up is that.

It’s been ingrained in me since I was little that black men ain’t shit and to get treated well and be loved I have to find a man who is of another race. It’s really sad but it’s gotten to the point where I can’t even picture my self marrying a black man and when I’m asked about my “dream guy” he’s never a black male. Situations like this make me think about why black men seem to never want or care for black women. Because of black men making comments ALWAYS uplifting others races but NEVER their own women, I don’t ever want to be with a black man and I feel bad about that because I am black but my mind can’t even picture me with a black man.

I don’t agree that Cyn was wrong for speaking publicly about this instead of privately. I worry that we are encouraging people to be two faced in public and becoming liars which is why when someone does say something real in public it causes such a big firestorm. Let’s try to strive for transparency and honesty so that real problems are not tiptoed around

Outside of Cyn Santana, I had to learn this week that "Latinos" don't know enough about the history for me to see them as allies. Maybe it's their sense of privilege that adds to their ignorance. Either way I'm glad we can have this discussion. I don't know if there's any hope for black men in this arena (the Joe Buddens of the world), just imo.

Most non-black women love the pedestal that black men put them on.. I will go as far as to say that they aren't that attracted to BM.. sometimes yes but most aren't.. However, they love, love love that pedestal.. Most know how to act obtuse in certain spaces...like the Kardashians.. they KNOW that BM love them and put them on a pedestal..but you never ever hear them say it directly..

I'm Latin American and I beg of you please, PLEASE, Americans, stop calling Latin Americans "Spanish," please. Use Hispanic if they speak Spanish or their family does and Latino if they're from Latin America (which includes Brazil, wehre they speak Portuguese), or whatever the person you're talking about prefers to be called. But unless you're talking about Spaniards, people from Spain, PLEASE don't call us Spanish. It is so unbelievably annoying.

I read a statistics of non black women who date black men. At a high number end up as single mothers. So I guess she isn't fully correct. I personally never been in a relationship with black men. I just hear a lot of this. From black women being mistreated. And hear from non black women. It's only good for a bit. Those relationships end horribly.

Black men are over protective too. I'm native and black, all the black men I've been with even if i didn't even date them or flirt with them or even touch them, wanted to know everything i was doing, wanted to follow me around, didn't want me talking to others as if i was obligated to them or they owned me. But they wanted to be all possessive when they couldn't even buy me a sandwich. All they wanted to offer was their "chocolate bars"

I knew she was right which is why I didn’t get upset (not that I would anyway because that’s who I am as person) ; however, the problem I do see is why she felt the need to mention black women. Black men treat “Spanish” women better cool keep our name out of your mouth. A lot of black women don’t have a problem with interracial dating we do however have a problem with people dragging us in order to justify it
