Honestly as a Filipino, the anime is the exact reason Greninja was popular. He was extremely overhyped. Even people outside the Pokemon community knew who Greninja was because of how overhyped he was. Also the fact that the Pokemon anime aired a lot here and still does, it usually airs after school and is what we'd watch after a long hard day of studying. I know this is super late and you probably already got the answer, but I just wanted to type down my input.

Greninja is probably popular in those countries because of the heavy reliance on Japanese media in comparison to local media. A lot of the kids shows there are regional dubs of anime, a lot of which contains references to ninja (i.e. Naruto, Ninja Hattori-kun). This leads to more of a sense of familiarity with ninja. Furthermore, the reliance on anime also leads to a heavy exposure to Pokémon. These two factors are probably the reason behind Greninja’s popularity.

It's small (hard to hit), fast, has a very good projectile, ridiculous combo game, very good recovery, fantastic edgeguarding and multiple reliable methods of taking stocks. If you're unconvinced, watch top Pichu players like Void or RFang, both of whom were at the most recent major tournament, Ultimate Summit 2.

I think that the reason why Greninja is such a popular pick here is because of the INSANE popularity of Pokémon here: ESPECIALLY Pokémon Go. For anyone who lives here or has visited Singapore before (I am Singaporean), you may have seen people who have up to 8 phones all running Pokémon Go AT THE SAME TIME (no, I am seriously not joking, this is real). Brandon Wu - the top Pokémon Go player (before his account was banned) - is Singaporean. Heck - even some of the ELDERLY here play Pokémon Go (which actually makes sense considering how watered down Pokémon Go is compared to other games in the franchise). Because of that popularity, more people here of all ages are being introduced to the Pokémon, and considering the natural visual appeal of a Pokémon like Greninja, I don't think that there isn't at least some relationship between these two factors. Furthermore, if you consider that Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee were just released, and how Nintendo is moving their focus towards increasing Nintendo Switch sales in the Middle East and South-East Asia (where Singapore is), I don't think that it's surprising that Pokémon is becoming a nation-wide sensation, and as a result, Greninja is one of the most anticipated characters in SSBU here. As a Filipino, I can see why we, or should I say, they like Greninja because of One Particular Anime about Ninjas... Yeah, he's pretty famous around here. This is more about analyzing the characters you do pick and THEN determining what type of person you are based on that. because the style of play is completely unique from one player to another and also the survey never had an option of what play style you play so the data was just never really there to analyze and the survey would of been MASSIVE For example Link was the #2 pick out of all the characters across everyone which i can agree with I also picked him and i have been playing this since it first came out and i pick him because I know him the best i have my own play style and he fits it perfectly. That being said you can take Link and literally have 5 different play styles associated with him....other characters depending on what they do could have more or less. You would have to figure out how many play styles are available for that character set it up as a survey and then post it for everyone to do for EVERY character....it would be too long barely anyone would fill it out thus less numbers and less accuracy.

The reason why I think Greninja is so popular in the mentioned countries is that the particular pokemon anime season in which Greninja appears, is very freuqently airing in the 3 countries. I know this to be true for at least 2 of the 3 because pokemon is EXTREMELY popular here in India AS WELL AS Singapore! (I've lived half my life in Singapore and half in India). I know from personal experience that the anime series of pokemon is a HUGE hit in both countries. MOST of the younger generation (includes me) are familiar with Greninja and his journey with Ash, which leads us to pick that one super cool and popular pokemon whom we all know and love, that is, Greninja. In conclusion, I believe that Greninja is one of the tops for SSBU in these countries because of the anime's EXTREME popularity in those places regardless of gender. BUT HEY, THAT'S JUST A THEORY. I’m guessing Link is popular because he’s got a sword, shield, and other stuff a traditional heroic knight would have; he’s pretty much an undebatable hero without appearing overly intimidating. He has also been around for quite a while, while still having different versions to play as, and games that’ve been quite popular as of late-ish. He’s more or less a simple go-to. My theory about graninja being so popular in those three countries is that, if what you’re saying is true and they only really have exposure to the Pokemon franchise through the anime, then it makes perfect sense for him to be so popular. In the last season of the anime graninja played the role of the starter for Ash. It always happens during every new generation, Ash gets one of the starters at its first stage, develops a bond with it and it evolves over the course of the season, usually becoming his powerhouse for that season. This time though the graninja had some sort of “bonding ability” with Ash that made him a lot more powerful and overall just a lot more appealing than graninja actually is. I think Nintendo really wanted to make a new Charizard type figure this season due to how much marketing power it has and to be fair it looked like it worked.

Hey Matpat, I'm sure this will be lost in the sea of comments, but I have an important theory regarding Super Mario 64. Don't stop reading, because I have some juicy evidence to back it up. Here it goes: the villain of the game is Peach and not Bowser. This might be surprising, because it seems obvious that Bowser is the villain. However, my theory is that Peach used the star power to assume the form of Bowser. Consider this: what are the in-game effects of wielding the star power? First and foremost is the ability to change shape and warp reality, as seen with various bosses given portions of the star power. There's also the ability to speak to Mario "telepathically" without being physically present. Obviously, these both apply to Bowser. Let's see how they apply to Peach. Does she change shape/warp reality? Well, yes. At the end of the game, she appears floating outside the castle. How does she appear? The star taken from Bowser transforms into Peach. We're led to believe that Bowser locked Peach up somehow and that the star power is the key to release her, but what if Bowser being "defeated" was just Peach transforming into the star form and then back into Peach? That's not conclusive evidence, but I have more. There's also the matter of telepathic speech. Obviously, Bowser can do this, but what about other characters? There are a few others. For one, Big Boo's Haunt includes telepathic speech, presumably from the Boo(s) that had stars. There are occasional instructional popups in various worlds, which could just be from Lakitu himself. However, there's one other character that speaks telepathically: Peach. At various points in the game such as Peach's Secret Slide, Peach communicates telepathically to Mario, a power that seems to be reserved for wielders of star power. So it seems plausible that Peach could have been using the star power, but we'll need a little more evidence to prove that she did. My next piece of evidence is the note at the beginning of the game, which says, "Dear Mario: Please come to the castle. I've baked a cake for you. Yours truly, Princess Toadstool." Based on the timing and context of how this is displayed, it's assumed that it was sent and delivered shortly before the intro cutscene, and that Mario left immediately for Peach's castle. We know this because it says she already baked the cake, which she wouldn't say if the letter would take days to deliver. It almost reads like a text message in terms of its timing. There are a couple problems with this. If Peach's letter is to be believed, then in the short interval between the letter being sent and Mario's arrival, Bowser arrived at the castle, overtook the entire thing, found where the star power was hidden, used the star power to bring most of the paintings to life, entered the paintings to give stars to bosses and hide the rest, created various traps in the castle, and still had time to greet Mario at the door. That seems suspiciously like it would take a long time. I'll get back to that in a moment, but there's another problem with the letter: the cake. Peach had said she baked a cake for us, yet the cake is nowhere to be found in the castle. Even when we "rescue" Peach, she tells us that she's going to bake a cake for us, as in she hasn't even baked it yet. This confirms that at the very least, the cake is a lie. There was never any cake waiting for us at the castle. So why did she say there was? This brings me to the part where I tie it all together. Peach was bored and wanted some adventure, so she used the star power to transform into Bowser and bring all those worlds to life. Then, after visiting each one and giving some extra star power to the bosses, she wanted even more adventure. That's when she sent a letter to Mario promising cake if he comes to the castle. She lied to him to get him to come to the castle and play along with her game. She wanted another adventure so much that she deliberately set up a crisis for Mario to rescue her from. Peach played the whole thing off as if Bowser captured her when she was behind it all. At least she followed through with the cake.

In this video, I will be explaining exactly what I do to collect Watch for Rolling Rocks in 0.5x A Presses. But first, we need to clear something up. Because every time I post a half A press video, I get the same comments over and over asking what it means, even though I always have a whole paragraph in the description explaining it, which even starts with "If you're wondering what a half A press is, read this before commenting to ask." But maybe what you guys need isn't a paragraph, maybe you guys need an example. So, consider Wing Mario Over The Rainbow, not even the whole star. Just consider getting to that cannon platform, which is a necessary part of getting the star. So, how many A presses does it take to get there? Well, If you say zero, that's wrong. Because then Mario can't go far enough. If you say one, Well it's true that Mario can get there with one but we can do a little better. We can do it in half an A press. To do that, we start the level already holding A and then we use that A press to reach the platform. Now hold on, I know what you're thinking, "an a press is an a press. You can't say its only a half". Well TJ "Henry" Yoshi, hear me out. An A press actually has three parts to it. When A is pressed, when A is held, and when A is released. And together, this forms one complete A press. Now, usually, it's the pressing that's useful. Because that's the only part that makes Mario jump. However, sometimes it's sufficient to just use the holding part, which allows Mario to do little kicks, to swim in water, to fall slowly while twirling, and to fall slowly with the wing cap. And as for the release, well, there's currently no cases where that's useful or important, so don't worry about that part. Now, if we map out the required A presses for Wing Mario Over The Rainbow, it would look like this. We merely need to hold A to reach the canon platform, we need to press A to launch from the first canon, and we need to press A again to launch from the second canon. So, how many A presses is that total? Well, it appears to be three, and if we were doing this star in isolation, then yeah, it would be three. But, in a full game A button challenge run, there are other A presses that occur earlier in the run, such as this A press needed to get into the course. So, if we take that A press into consideration as well, then how many A presses would it take? The naive answer would be four. One to enter the course and the three within the course that we established earlier. However, we can do better. We can actually do it in three by simply holding out the first A press to be used for the half A press. Because the half A press only required A to be held, not actually pressed. So in this fashion, Wing Mario Over The Rainbow only adds on an additional two A presses to the run since the first A press just leeches off of a previous A press. So, to capture this phenomenon, we call it 2.5x A presses. On a single star basis, you'd round that up to three. But in a full game run, you'd round it down to two. So, in conclusion, since that first A press counts in some context but adds no additional A presses in other contexts, we refer to it as a half A press. So, going back to the video, you can see that I start the level with the A button already held, as indicated in the bottom left corner. And so in the full game run, this A press will just leech off of a previous one. And so it won't incur an additional A press. Okay, glad that's explained. Now, what am I doing in the video? Here, I'm using a trick called Scuttlebug Transportation. You see, like most enemies, scuttlebugs have a home, which is just a point in 3d space. And they'll patrol a certain radius around that point. So, if Mario enters that radius they will lunge at him to attack. But, unlike most other enemies, a scuttlebug's home can change positions. Because if a scuttlebug bumps into Mario, the scuttlebug's home will update to where the scuttlebug was when the collision occurred. So, by strategically luring the scuttlebug to the edge of its radius and bumping into it, we can effectively transport the scuttlebug and its home. So, that's what I'm doing here. Note that we can't actually transport a scuttlebug to outside of its native room. They actually get stuck at the door. So, if your dream was to bring all the scuttlebugs together for one big jamboree, I'm sorry but it's not gunna happen. Also worth noting is that scuttlebugs will actually disappear if they walk into a wall while too far below their current home.
