I am a gay man, but when I grew up the terms "top" and "bottom" were not in common circulation, instead people would ask if you were "active" or "passive," and I did not mind that terminology, even in front of family and friends as it got the point over sufficiently without a glaring graphic connection. When I first heard the terms "top" and "bottom" coming into more regular parlance, I never liked the description of a "bottom" which has a very direct physical description. To me, it would be like calling a woman in a heterosexual relationship a "vagina"! Do we need to?!!! I know it's commonly used now, but I still squirm when a family member or good friend asks me if I am a "bottom," rather than ask if I am active or passive. There can be gentler less explicit ways to explain our sexual role in a relationship without having to refer to a man's backside!

@@fxx9169 Yes, I think I do prefer the more euphemistic approach of "active" and "passive" esp at the dinner table! But I guess we're stuck with the description and mental image of "bottom" for the unforeseeable future. I was 27 in 1992, but interested to hear that you remember the term. 🙂

I came out in Dallas in 1983 and all I've ever heard from literally thousands of gay guys (and a few straight ones) were the terms top and bottom. I find those to be rather sexualized in a 0rimal sense. The time I ever saw the terms passive and active was in Human Sexuality textbook in the chapter that discussed homosexuals. I guess that is way those sound a bit clinical to me
