Not completely true, as the Nisga'a First Nation negotiatiated a treaty with the government. I believe the Haida Nation has done as well, or is in the process.
@jengoodwyn27153 жыл бұрын
I hope they don't negotiate treaties!! First nations in BC don't have treaties and as a result own their land outright and can and do create their own laws and services. It's what has allowed the marijuana industry to flourish as they can sell products that are illegal in the country of Canada. But only in BC because other nations who do have treaties have to abide to the treaties which years and years ago made them subject to white law on the land they now pay rent to the Canadian government for. In BC the RCMP and city police are not allowed on first nations land without a direct invitation from the local chief and council as they have their own legal force on land. They are unceded territories where the people live by their own laws and culture with no white interference. My first nations friends here in BC are very passionate about their lands and their rights, and I hope to God they are never pressured to give those up by a white government that really is only there for big business.
@WukongTheMonkeyKing3 жыл бұрын
@@lesleypatterson466 The Nisga'a treaty is only about 20 years old. So, they were jerked around for over 100 years. Haida Gwaii is still in the process. In both cases, the land claims weren't taken seriously for over 100 years. Recently (within the last 30 years), the land claims are being taken more seriously, but these have been hard fought victories. Often the Nations have to fight the government to get the government to honor even basic promises. I'm proud of my country, but when it comes to Indigenous matters, we have come a long way and still have a long way to go.

Loved this, so much fun the only thing that jarred a bit with me was ice hockey, in Canada when we talk about hockey or skating, we NEVER put the word ice in front, that’s assumed (except when we host Olympics and only then because the IOC makes us 😂) . Thanks for another great video!
@remycallie2 жыл бұрын
@akplmn Same in the US. When somebody talks about "ice hockey" you know they're from the UK (or, as in this case, Ireland.)
@junbh2 Жыл бұрын
@@remycallie Really? Because as a Canadian, the phrase 'ice hockey' is one of the ways I identify Americans. I have only ever heard it from people in the US or from the US. Maybe both are used there... But the ice sounds super weird in Canada.
@remycallie Жыл бұрын
@@junbh2 It sounds super weird to me as well and I can't recall ever hearing anyone -- Canadian or American -- ever say it. Why would Americans say it? We have just as much hockey as you guys do -- just numerically I would say even more -- and there are ZERO "field hockey" events that someone would watch on TV or attend in person unless it was your 12 year old daughter playing. We're pretty much all watching the same hockey on TV, why would we use different words for it?
