I was raised by dachshunds, had them for fifty years and saw two through back surgery. The surgeon told us that Gonzo was not peeing as expected after surgery and they had to squeeze him to empty his bladder; there were concerns there might be nerve damage. We got him home and straight to the back yard and propped him up next to his very favorite thing to pee on. He peed. And he peed. We didn't think he'd stop peeing. And we realized that there wasn't a damn thing wrong with his bladder. The problem had been that the vet hospital had been expecting him to pee on *their* schedule, on a vertical object of *their* choosing. And that was not how Gonzo the Obnoxious rolled. He lived long and prospered, and is sorely missed over a quarter of a century later.

In German we call them "Dackel". we also have the term "Wackeldackel" which refers to the little statues some people have in their car that constantly wobble their head once set in motion. It has a nice ring to it with the rime. Also also especially in old buildings, it's not uncommon to have long, heavy pillows in front of doors so the cold air won't get in through the gap on the ground. The pillows are sometimes in Dachshound-form which is so fitting.

My daschund is the same, she doesn't let strangers approach her. Only exception will be my parents, me, brother and nephew and one of my aunt. But other than that, she'll bark, and hide behind me. As for socialising with other dogs, they have to be either at the same height or smaller. It's one little step at a time and just being patient and reassure her that no everyone means harm ( She was beaten up with the rest of her siblings when she was with her ex-family). Maybe introducing your dog to quiet places could reduce stress? And make one baby step at a time? Maybe she would act differently if meeting another daschund? (Mine's behavious changes when she encounters one, she seems super happy). They also say daschund comes in pair so if you have time, money, having another one could probably help too? :)

I've had two. These are the most stubborn, loyal, sweetest dogs I've ever seen. They adopt you not the other way around. I always say a dauschund is 12 inches tall with 12 feet of attitude. They don't know they're small and resemble a food. This is a breed that has to be socialized carefully but they are perfect for older owners and homebodies. They love cuddling with their humans and hiding under the blanket (serious burrowers as they've been bred). My family had a boy who didn't like anyone but my mom. He'd growl at strangers but would not go after anyone unless they got too close to mom. He was mistreated in his last home and he adored my mother, they were inseparable. I was tolerated because I was the cook in the house. He was the smartest dog I'd ever seen. I once told him if he caught a mouse that had gotten in the house I would give him his own steak. He killed the mouse and proudly showed it off. When he growled at me my mom asked what I did to him. He was clearly the favorite child. When he disappeared, I got my little girl. She was the sweetest dog I'd ever seen and I would have placed no money on her standing up for herself. One night she was outside my room barking and growling. She had cornered a opossum outside my door and was keeping it away from me. I was heart broken when she passed away at the vet's being treated for kidney problems.

As a German I feel like many people underestimate that the Dachshund (Dackel) is a pure hunting breed and is still used for mainly this purpose in Germany. They need lots of exercise, long walks and a strict upbringing as they are incredibly stubborn. It’s also important to keep them skinny and fit, bc even slight overweight can damage their back in the long term. For their specific hunting purposes they need to be strong willed, independent and fearless to a certain degree. “Dachshund“ literally means badger-dog (like you said), as they are/were supposed to go inside batcher or rabbit holes to clear them. But you really can’t argue about the fact that they’re cute and charming😊, that’s why so many European royal families including emperor Wilhelm II held them as pets.

These owners often seem to fall into a rut of "Well, I can just pick them up and remove them from X situation," or "Well, I can just get more puppy pads if they keep going in the house," because they're small, and thus don't make as large of a mess, and are "portable." I saw this a lot with my grandmother's doxie, and my stepsister's chihuahuas, where instead of teaching them properly, they just covered large areas in puppy pads and tried to "encourage" them to go only on those.

My mom and dad had one when libing in an apartment. When they took him out for a late night walk he barked at people when he was startled. People would look around for the dog...at around waist height... Then not finding a dog would get confused until they looked further down, at the mini-weiner with the giant bark.
@critterwatcher80092 жыл бұрын
They just either have to 1) think what you're asking of them is their idea or 2) feel whatever you're asking of them is worth it (getting praise, love, a treat ... whatever). But they can be frustrating when you ask something of them they absolutely know, and they turn around and look at you defiantly.

I have a 4 year old mini dachshund I love more than life itself. She has a serious attitude, we go to the park almost every day. She can play fetch way longer than I can ever stay in the park. I love it when she chases the squirrels and how ferocious she is. Also very loving, not aggressive at all. Doesn;t bark unless I an holding back her balls in the park. She loves everyone and frequently will go up to groups of people to get pets. I love her so much I can cry.

The Dachshund (or Dackel, as its more often called in Germany (also Teckel in hunterspeak)) really is a dog breed with quite some attitude. I still remember a senior one whose old owner (who used the dog as hunting dog so it was well trained) sadly had passed away so his family took him in. On a visit a schoolmate wanted to show off how well the dog was trained and gave him commands, which the dog ignored. Claiming that he was already a bit deaf due to his age he gave him handsigns at which point the dog deliberatly looked into the other direction, like i dont take orders from pups 🙂
@danyvorphal2 жыл бұрын
My Dackel, Tobias, will do as he wants, when he wants to… unless I use my “command voice”. Then, he knows shit’s getting serious. If my husband tries to tell him to do stuff, he just won’t listen, like saying “I’m not your dog”

As a German I feel that Dackel is such a fitting name. Short like the dog, makes you instantly think of the tippitytaps when they walk. I once met the most dramatic one at a riverside (Main in Würzburg) that barked at the water like MADNESS and entertained everyone by splashing into the water with an epic sausage jump after he had intimidated the water sufficiently. It Was a fun summer afternoon.

Or you can also say "Lovely child has many names" (it sounds better in German 🙂). The dachshund has 3 official names. Dachshund, Dackel and Teckel. And as so often in German, the meaning of the name disappears in the mists of the past. A possible explanation for Dackel could be the combination of da (chshund) and (te)ckel = Dackel. But I'm not a linguist.

How can something so adorable be the second most ferocious breed in this whole world.
@ClockworkEngineer2 жыл бұрын
This may have been rhetorical, but I'm going to answer anyway. It's because they were designed to be very aggressive hunters. Going into a cramped hole to, well, murder a small animal takes a lot of aggression. This is called "prey drive": the instinct to pursue, capture, and kill prey. Dachshunds are going to be little killers, it's just bred into them. This doesn't cause aggression towards people though. That's all up to how they are raised.
@susanc46222 жыл бұрын
@@ClockworkEngineer The small animal would put up a pretty good fight. That was why the dachshunds needed the ferocity.
@TaliPolk2 жыл бұрын
they were bred to fight animals their own size and bigger in a cramped tunnels. High adrenaline fighting needs fierceness. There have been news highlights of a small dachshund running up on a bear to protect it's owner. Dachshunds usually have a favorite human and disregard others in the house. My dachshund is a total mommy's boy and likes it that way. He has never been afraid to tell very large men to get out of his house and needs a little time to acclimate well to others. Overall, they're a great breed and aren't yippy and nippy like other small dog breeds. They're like a pocket hound. They're also incredibly intelligent and have HUGE personalities. It feels like my dachshund really understands what we are saying. When he was much younger we taught him how to differentiate between the road and the sidewalk and he refused to cross the road without a human to come with him. He was trained to walk without a leash and stayed with us the whole time. Never walked out into the road. They also live up to 20 if taken care of properly. I feel like they are the perfect dog.

We had two of these when I was in my teens. One was the laziest lovebug ever (long-haired breed). The other, short-haired, was 100% a hunter. And extremely stubborn. We had so much fun with her - we could just point at a random spot on the ground and say "mouse!" and she would dig a bit, stick her nose in and take a few deep sniffs. If there was no mice, she would look at us with a confused "the hell did you do that for?" face. But if she picked up rodent scent, she would go absolutely nuts. There was NO way to stop her once she got going. If you tried to drag/carry her away, she would wiggle free and sprint back to the digging site and continue. One time she saw a mouse or rat run into a semi rotten tree we had in the backyard and her whole body just went into bloodlust mode. She dug all the way through the tree with dead wood and dirt flying everywhere. 4+ hours later she came out with 2 dead rodents in her mouth.

I've had around 12 dachshunds in my life, and zero were aggressive unless you were a groundhog. They were all dog, cat, and people-friendly. The only slightly aggressive dog I've owned is a chi weenie. She was a little food possessive. My mother's dachshund lay in bed with her 24/7 when she had cancer. only leaving to eat and go to the bathroom. He knew she didn't have long. her two dogs the dachshund and chi weenie lay with her and licked her hand as she passed away.

Just said goodbye to Bear, the 2nd of my two Dachshunds after 16 years. Despite being considered a very stubborn and aggressive breed, like most dogs, with patience and training, they can be the light of your life. Amazing how such a small animal can have such a big place in your heart.

So sorry for your loss! How lucky you and Bear were to have had each other while they were on earth.

I lost my dog, Dexter, 2 years ago, he was 17, close to 18 years old. He was never trained and despite that, was the most calm and friend dog ( towards me and my mother) he didn't get along with some dogs and didn't like small children, his biggest disaffection was another dog also named Dexter who lived in my neighborhood..

When I was a wee child, 60+ years ago, my grandparents had a doxie - one of the old, original, very-long-back doxies (I don't think this type is around anymore). His name was Brandy and he was my BFF; it mattered not at all that we were different species. Have had a great affection for the breed ever since.

Amazing how such a bond is formed, my grandpa's Irish setter Sam and I were boon companions for many years so long ago. Thank you for helping bring back that memory. Hope you have a wonderful day.

we had a doxie :) called frankie she was the best dog ever - not a bad bone in her body despite being a mix of two feisty breeds

Are you referring to a standard dachshund? There's two recognjzed varieties: standard and miniature
@caseyleichter23092 жыл бұрын
@@normal4810 No - I think even today's standard version is shorter than the original breed.
@BestKCL2 жыл бұрын
@@caseyleichter2309 Interestingly, after looking this up, the even older ones were somewhat more normally-proportioned than now. It was them being used and bred in the show ring for a century that took off and inch or four from their height, and added even more exaggerated length. Her dachshund was probably bred for show in the time before considerations were taken for the health implications of such a crazy shape.

I have a wired haired standard dachsund, scottish terrier, chihuahua mix that is DEF the pack leader in my home. Fearless is super accurate. Loving, loyal, and protective too!

Finally! I’ve got three. They’re all nightmares at the groomer and I’ve been taking them since puppyhood. Touched their feet, whole nine to get them used to it. Nope, still assholes 💀 but dang if they aren’t the most loving, fun, sweet, guarding dogs I’ll ever have the pleasure of owning 💗

I have two dogs; one is a 15-pound chihuahua mix that no matter how much I touch her paws she believes I am trying to steal them and she with the most annoyed face snatches them away every time, the other is a 100 pound great dane mix (we think..) who has huge paws that he allows to be touched and held, I think he actually enjoys his paw being held when he is laying down.

My Sons mini daschund is THE sweetest, cuddliest, sensitive dog I've ever known. I love that grandboy.

Yes, Dachshunds are ferocious. Or, they can be. When I was a kid, the lady that bought our first house had two weiner dogs that she named Buttons and Bows. Cute, right? WRONG. These two were every bad stereotype about the weiner dog. Nasty, hyper, aggressive, ankle-biters who loved to hide under cars and then try to take you apart at the ankles without warning. Give me a pit bull any day over a badly-socialized Dachshund. These two look like they've been properly socialized and are great dogs, on the other hand.
@rangerlove72 жыл бұрын
That reminds me of the two doxies that lived next door when I was a kid. Natasha and Roscoe. Meanest dogs I’ve ever met but their daughter Gidget was the complete opposite. I was terrified of the breed after that until I met my in-laws dog Kandy. And then we got one of our own, Maximus Simon. He was a tweenie (standard x miniature mix).

To be fair, I'd take a badly behaved dachshund over a badly behaved pit bull.
@orangebeagle30682 жыл бұрын
Hahaha. I guess the difference is that an angry pit bull can do a lot more damage than an angry daschund.

It all depends on the care taker ... If they turn out aggressive (which is their inherent nature which could have been moulded with proper socialising)blame the owner.
@sinisterthoughts28962 жыл бұрын
Very true. They can very easily be snippy grumps.

@@katakisgyura5675 peanut is földimogyoró, but nobody says that. So Mogyi can be peanut, too, and Peanut and Mogyi has a humorous owner with Hungarian origin.

Are fearless as stated....my late Dachshund, Max, who I nicknamed Weasel Head, would rough house with my Pittie. He was left at a house I used to rent and just took him with when I bought my home. I asked the owners if they wanted him back but they just said he seemed pretty happy with me and knew he would be taken care of, so that was it. Even in his latter years, old, fat, and toothless he would "attack" and "bite" my Pittie and waller all over him when Zeus finally laid down on the floor.

I grew up having two dachshunds. They are literally the best family dogs. Playable, loveable, and loyal. Sadly the oldest ended up getting cancer and had to be put down. If I ever decide to get another dog. Definitely will be getting a dachshund again.

Thank You Vanessa for including the information about disc disease...it's a terrible thing for a dog to have to go through. ❤🐶👍

Our first ever family dog was a Dachshund and we named him Pepsi. He died way back in 1994 and I don’t really remember him aside from pictures, because I was still extremely young when he passed. But what I do remember just how calm and loving he was, especially with my grandparents. He loved my Grandparents so much, that they took him with them when he was about 2 years old. We were shifting houses that time, so we let them take care of him. When we went to take him back, he stopped eating and wouldn’t stop crying. So, my grandma came all the way from where they stayed, about five hours away, to take him with her. And there he lived in their huge house with them until the ripe old age of 14.
