Dr. Gundry, after following you for several years at this point; I have found one of the biggest keys to my personal weight loss after a weight gain phase I went through, is that dark coffee and intermittent fasting were the keys to me losing about 40 to 50 pounds. Even though I am still guilty of eating forbidden foods, I find that coffee can be a strong counter balance. I wonder if it is the caffeine that can strengthen my stomach, (as I like to think), coffee being a diarrhetic, (and in ways fiber as I found), or the strong polyphenols; let alone everything I described. Thanks for your advice, as it has really served me well.

Had many problems with irritable bowel, lack of energy, aches and pains over the years, and finally I've managed to join the dots, the common factor is lectins, what made it all add up was that I remember my doctor many years ago recommended I ate more brown bread instead of white, it exacerbated my irritable bowel, now I understand that brown bread contains more lectins because it's contained in the rusk of the wheat and adding up all my other loved experiences with health problems, it's pretty obvious that lectins are the common factor. Now I've practically eliminated these foods, at 53 I feel better than I did when I was 18. What strikes me is that soon as you look for related research papers, it appears to be quite conclusive that this will be the problem for millions if not billions of people across the world, why don't the healthcare specialists in government make themselves aware of the potential trillions of pounds that could be saved.... the mind boggles

Dr Gundry, I went and looked at the lists of food you should eat and ones not to eat. You mention don’t eat bread, so what kind of bread should we eat? I’ve been eating whole grains 100% whole wheat bread. I tried to eat the Ezekiel bread, but the seeds irritated my colon stomach. My gastroenterologist that I had who did my colonoscopy told me no seeds, corn or nuts.

Dr Grundy I need your input because I cannot find much online on non diabetic hypoglycemia. I have been diagnosed with this shortly after a dx of Acute Diverticulitis. I completed my ten days strong antibiotics and I am scheduled for a Cat Scan soon but my problem is I feel just awful. I have severe sweating of my head if I exert myself, irritable, trouble eating and a slight headache behind my eyes. It's almost like flu symptoms. I had adrenal insufficiency issues years ago along with a small pituitary tumor. The tumor disappeared after a neurologist kept track of it for ten years. I also had a triple bypass in 2021, total knee replacement in 2022 and a neurostimulator put in on Dec 5, 2023. I have been through a lot and on many meds including thyroid med 137 mcg ( left thyroidectomy 15 years ago due to calcified benign tumor) and Amiodorone for AFib and several other medications. I am perplexed about how to eat and if I should find someone that specializes in this problem. Family doctor suggested Selenium, iodine, tumeric and zinc and eat fibrous foods and stay way from refined sugar and flour. Is there any way you could tell me how I could find help for this? No one seems to know what to do,... especially ME!!!!!!

Hello Dr. Gundry. I started your diet and been on for 3 months. Since I started the diet I have had a stomach ache frequently. I am guessing it is when I ate something that negatively affects my gut microbe or gut lining. I cannot specify the source. Maybe it is a trace amount of gluten, dairy or other kinds of irritants. Today at my wife's birthday breakfast I had A1 milk whip cream with Cassava flour pancake and I am now having the stomach ache. I want to believe that my gut has become more sensitive to negative foods and is giving me a signal, which is a good thing in my opinion because it can help me identify foods that are not good for my owner (the gut community). But I am also afraid that there might be more serious illnesses. Could you give your opinion on this?

Can heat inactivate lectins in soybeans? Is lectins in soybeans water-soluble? Tofu is made from soybean by boiling smashed soybeans and sedimenting denatured protein. Through this process lectins should be deactivated and filtered. Furthermore, you need cook tofu before you eat it. By going such a long way, there will be no any lectins can harm you.

@@gcs7817 who told you fermented tofu is miso ? lots of half baked "experts" online. Tofu is a staple of the Japanese diet. It's a common ingredient in miso soup, where it's found in small cubes, and is consumed almost every day this way. And then there's nabe or "hotpot", a common winter dish in which tofu is either substituted for meat, or eaten in addition to meat and vegetables. fermented soyabean is natto , not made from tofu

The controversy around lectins stems from their ability to bind to the cells lining the digestive tract. High levels of lectins can lead to negative health outcomes, including nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal distress, and in extreme cases, can trigger immune responses. However, it's crucial to note that the lectin content in foods is significantly reduced by proper cooking methods, such as boiling. For the general population, the consumption of foods containing lectins, when prepared properly, is not considered harmful and these foods contribute beneficial nutrients to the diet. However, there are individual differences in sensitivity to lectins, and some people may experience adverse reactions to even normal levels of lectins. The lectin-free diet can lead to the exclusion of many nutritious foods, potentially leading to imbalanced nutrition without clear scientific evidence supporting such broad restrictions for everyone. I am a scientist in drug research and development, and am familiar with the concept that the dose makes the poison. This principle applies to lectins as well; while in high concentrations they can be harmful, the amounts typically consumed in a balanced diet, particularly after proper food preparation, are not considered a risk for most people. For most of the population, lectins in food are not harmful due to the significant reduction in lectin activity through proper cooking. However, individuals with specific sensitivities or underlying health conditions may need to monitor and adjust their intake of lectin-containing foods accordingly.
