People use SA instead of sexual abuse because platforms like TikTok and KZbin flag and demonetize content for that. It is a form of self-censorship. The idea that teenagers started to believe that SA is the proper, politically correct term is dystopian. We are letting big tech change our language.
@LilianOrchard
@LilianOrchard 9 ай бұрын
I used the term "sexual assault" multiple times in this video and wasn't demonetized. I did an entire video about the Goth Incest Game and it went viral and made me a ton of money. The funniest part about tiktok is that despite how ridiculous and pervasive the censorship is, there's no evidence that any of it actually works. People get videos with allegedly suppressed words to go viral all the time. The practice of self-censorship was developed because people saw that their videos were flopping and assumed it was because they were getting shadowbanned for mature content rather than accept the reality that The Algorithm is random and unpredictable. A similar phenomenon happened on Twitter. People straight up believe they can't say words like "commission" or "fundraiser" or "auction" or else the algorithm will hide their posts from people, but the fact is people just tend to interact less with posts asking for money or advertising a product. Big tech didn't change your language. You changed it yourself. Mythology is not an ancient rock, but an ongoing unceasing river in the bloodstream of all humanity.

@@LilianOrchard So people self-censorship for no good reason? That actually comes back back around to being funny. I am not a creator on the internet, so I just assumed there was at least something to claim that certain words got suppressed.
@LilianOrchard
@LilianOrchard 9 ай бұрын
@@IvellScarlettThe truth is most people don't know how the backend of these platforms work. All they know is their videos aren't getting views, and they blame shadowbanning instead of just the randomness of the algorithm. This is especially true for TikTok, which is 100% reliant on recommendations.

@@LilianOrchard This seems consistent with behavioral research - One of slightly less famous Skinner's experiment was setting the reward/punishment machine to fire at _random_ intervals - this lead to animals forming elaborate rituals, magically thinking their actions had effect on their rewards. Humans, being a social species compound on it: a single human can be simply mistaken, but if multiple humans share the same superstition then surely the workings of Fate/Gods/Algorithm must be at play.

The reasons I've heard about why Angel's abuse is fetishezed is the sex scene where Val and Angel are having it. It looks like Angel is enjoying it. Here's the reality of it. HE IS, and that's a part of it! My abuser and I had good moments, too. It's a RELATIONSHIP. You dont see physical abusers constantly hit their victim, do you?? And with sex involved, it's so much more complicated. A lot of people wanna force the "perfect victim" stereotype onto Angel, and he just isn't. He likes sex! He isn't scared of it. that's the truth, and people can't understand that victims are more complicated than bad sex = never want sex again.
@LilianOrchard
@LilianOrchard 9 ай бұрын
Same holds true for me. In talking about the peer who sexually abused me, it was a sexual relationship I was coerced into. And when dealing with the 'hot and cold' aspect of abuse, there were times I was enjoying what we had, as much as I was a prisoner to this person being held in place by blackmail. But that fact would no doubt be used against me if I tried coming forward about it, even if I wanted to. Hell when it ended I was genuinely wondering if I'd done something wrong. I didn't fully recover from it for another twelve years. People are complicated and abuse is as pervasive as it is because our reactions to it can often make no sense to outsiders, and we have to stop treating abuse victims as either fragile smol beans or evil abusers tainted by their experiences.
@IvyLikesToDraw
@IvyLikesToDraw 9 ай бұрын
@Lily_Orchard I know exactly how you feel. I can honestly say I miss my abuser and what we had even though I know he was bad for me. The uwu-ification of Angel dust is something I've seen happen since the pilot. It's actually why I was against Huskerdust or any Angel ship, for so long up until the show because everyone babied Angel and wrote him as if he couldn't function without a good man in his life to show him a better life. It pisses me off so much he's more then the men in his life like wtf. I like to joke and say he got the woman treatment because that's exactly how a lot of women are written.
@k1productions87
@k1productions87 9 ай бұрын
Unintentionally enjoying aspects of the abuse is an unfortunate (and often inescapable) part of the whole problem, and what makes it so traumatic and damaging to one's psyche. If its not bad enough that someone is being taken advantage of and forced to do something they don't want, the fact it feels good gives the victim a sense of self-loathing that they allowed themselves to enjoy it in the first place. This has the side effect of painting themselves as the bad guy, rather than the true bad guy who forced them into it, and one of the many MANY reasons why it is so dangerous. It certainly doesn't help that sexual desire is almost instinctual (for most people anyway), so when those wants begin to surface, the trauma immediately links it to the horrible experience, thus reinforcing the idea that they somehow "deserve" the abuse to continue, rather than acknowledging how it damaged them. That it is their fault BECAUSE they're damaged, rather than realizing WHO actually caused the damage in the first place. Yes, there is definitely a lot more to it than that, and there are no doubt man things I am missing, but this is a topic that deserves massive books and not just singular paragraphs.

The idea that angel dusts abuse is fetishized just seems like a take youd only find on twitter from someone whos only seen the scenes where "SEX IS HAPPENING" as opposed to free other miriad of scenes where they're pretty blatantly forced into it. Also the implication that alastor just has several demons collectively going "What the fuck do you want this time" every time they do their little symbol spam thing is funnier than the reality.

To be fair, as a fan of this show, Alastor's writing is bland & overall mid. He's just so entertaining to watch, and that's all his character offers. He may be interesting for sure, but he falls OFF compared to the other characters' stellar writing. Angel Dust is portrayed as a victim of the sad reality of the effects byproducted by decisions, his whole character is all about making the right & correct choices, because sometimes, the effects are permanent & may affect your overall life, and you just can't take it back. The lesson I mentioned above can also apply to Husker. Lucifer is a complex character & a correct representation of a man with guilt & depression. I just heard from genuinely (and diagnosed) depressed people that they like how Lucifer is a realistic take on guilt & depression. Of course, there are times I feel extremely depressed or constantly guilt, (I had multiple suid*cal thoughts), I'm not depressed or anything mental whatever, but I really feel Lucifer.It's odd how fictional characters usually mess up about the portrayal of shame & constant sorrow, they usually portray this as either an "emo" person with negative emotions 24/7 or the really cringy "Outside I'm smiling, inside I'm dying" take. Despite Lucifer being a fictional Angel, he feels like the most realistic human with genuine emotions to me. Whereas Alastor is just... Funny? Interesting? Intimidating? Don't get me wrong, I extremely love him (he's my 3rd favorite character in the series, just below Adam & Lucifer), but he's not well-written or anything to offer new to the table...

i find the "Angel's Abuse is fetishized" argument so fucking bizarre. Because I can't imagine having watched that episode and not feeling viscerally uncomfortable. I watched it with my brother and he is not the kind of person to be uncomfortable with SA scenes (unlike me, i have refused to watch multiple shows because I knew it heavily featured it and I didn't want to do that to myself) and after that episode he asked if we could take a break. If someone that is pretty far removed from having any trauma with SA got SO uncomfortable with the depiction Hazbin Hotel had, I really can't see how anyone saw that and sat there like "yup, this is fetishising" It's absolutely baffling to me.

Over the last few years I’ve been slowly coming to the realization that the belief that “Being Subtle” is an imperative that all stories must adhere to is this weird defense mechanism people use to not want to think that hard about the media they consume. If something is up to interpretation, it leaves them an opening to either push their opinions or deny someone else’s. When I went to see the Barbie movie last year, my friend insisted that it was unnecessary for the characters to spell out in plain English their feelings about all the struggles and expectations they are forced into because of their gender. And I told him that the fact that there were reactionaries decrying the movie as “woke” and “destructively feminist” and “men hating” was exactly the reason WHY subtlety had to be thrown out the window, because there are still idiots out there who don’t get it. Also, I’ve never seen a PSA that made me want to boil my skin with how gross I felt watching it. God damn was that effective.

Plus lovecraft horror often dealt with the fear of the unknown, so you could still have the creepy and mysteriousness of his character. I mean he already uses tentacles to attack and eats animals skin that sounds like a lovecraftian monster already.

Hell, the show could have had a completely exploitive and explicit abusive sex scene played for sexual arousal, but as long as they put up an accurate trigger warning, it’s on the viewer to choose to go no further, not on the artist to censor their vision.

They don't end up sexually repulsed all the time, they try anything they can to get that back into their hands. Some form of catharsis from what I've heard. Again, it's like a spectrum. Some get repulsed, some work to regain their sexuality, and some don't give a shit. So while Angel's song Poison could be seen as him lying to himself about enjoying it, it could just as much be about him trying to convince himself that he's strong by pushing himself to do this. As someone who’s been raped I really liked how the show handled Angel and I’m glad people like you are talking about that. I’m personally sex-repulsed but not everyone is! It’s important to have varied representations for things like this. There’s nothing “wrong” with Angel for being hypersexual after what happened to him, it doesn’t mean he “deserved” it or “wanted” it and it doesn’t mean he’s a “fetishized” depiction. It’s sad people are trying to say that. However I did find it wildly uncomfortable how after handling Angel so well, they then made a rape joke with Pentious, with the “I’m having sex with everyone!” Where he got dragged away _clearly distressed and withdrawing his consent_ and it’s played off for laughs. He got raped! No ifs or maybes. There was no room for interpretation there. He got dragged away unwillingly into the sex room and raped by multiple people and the show treated it like a throwaway joke. Cherri didn’t do anything to help him, nor did Angel, who you’d think would be affected by that considering he’s also been through that! It’s so bizarre how that came from the very same show that had Masquerade and it’s amazing handling of the subject matter. I found that joke distressing since Pentious is my favorite character and he deserved better than to be treated as a living punchline since the show literally never takes him seriously. In general I just really hated the Pentious x Cherri attempt because she doesn’t care about him until Angel says he might have two penises, which feels pretty objectifying if you ask me- she’s only interested in him for his dick(s)! I hope they handle him better in future seasons. It’s honestly surprising I don’t see more people talking about that.

About Charlie and Vaggie, i feel like fandom just can’t handle anything that isn’t sexual, wether it’s a relationship or character. Alastor is probably a big example of this, people either intentionally ignore or deny the fact that he was confirmed to be AroAce in the seventh episode, yet people proceed to ship him with any character and fetishise him. The dude don’t want that! (It’s also weird that people find him “cute.”)

A friend of mine is a rape survivor and Hazbin makes them uncomfortable? They just prefer we don’t talk about it in the server too much and that’s it! It’s not a big deal. Excellent video about the KZbin content mill. Stuff like this makes me more conscious when I’m falling into a spiral of content like that like with that guy being wrong about Godzilla. Seeing people angry about Angel liking sex after being constantly raped is so discouraging as a person under the Asexual umbrella. Rape isn't ubiquitous with an aversion or apathy for sex. People, ESPECIALLY in LGBTQ spaces, glorify sex so much that people who don't prioritize it the way they do must be "wrong" or "broken" in some way. Which just goes to put not only rape victims and asexual folk, but themselves, in a box. With Alastor getting a quick implication of being ace, I really hope that future seasons can expand on this difference. While I don't love that one of the only characters that has a purposeful implication of asexuality is a psychopathic serial killer (cough, wrong or broken, cough), I really think a positive conversation could come out of featuring the differences between him and Angel.

"the conversation is uncomfortable and therefore impolite to discuss it" My mom was born and raised in Suriname. When she was a child, it was common for children to be sexually assaulted by adults. Whenever a kid tries to bring it up with their folks, the child would be ignored, the adult wouldn't believe them or, in some extreme cases, the child would be punished for bringing up something so "inappropriate." The only thing kids could do is warn each other about any adults that sexually abused them. Sadly, this was kind of passed down as generational trauma, but in a different way. I'm certain that if I was sexually assaulted by an adult when I was a kid and brought it up with my mom, she would do something about it. However, she was an adult that did not listen to her kids. She believed that our thoughts and feelings didn't matter at the time, so any anger and sadness we felt was something we should just get over. **BONUS** During the slave trade, Suriname (which was called Dutch Guiana at the time) was notorious for being one of the most horrible places for slaves in the entire world. Like, slaves elsewhere were threatened by slaveowners that they'll send them to this place if they were not obedient. Dealing with the generational trauma of that is not fun, let me tell you.

The PSA reminded me of a dutch government advertisement which consists of a call from a scared woman calling the dutch emergency number where she orders a pizza. The man answering first is confused but asks if there is an emergency going on, at which she says yes. Through a few yes or no questions it is shown that there is someone (presumably a spouse or other loved one) in her home and is insinuated to have abused her. It is a very well crafted clip. The dutch household violence hotline has a lot of very well crafted and hardhitting clips like that. It's nice to see other countries have these, as I as a young(er) child became a lot more aware of household violence due to those advertisements. Hopefully it did the same for others. With Alastor and Vodoun, hearing about the fuckup made me want to see if anything could be done to salvage the idea, which I'm guessing is well intentioned but insensitive on my part - I know next to nothing about Vodoun, so the possibility of someone using the actual mythology and orthopraxis of the RL religion to tell a story in a mainstream property is almost inherently exciting to me. Which is where I then cringe at myself, because that kind of feels like I'm treating a much-maligned religious faith which has weathered centuries of imperial extermination attempts like a particularly intriguing & obscure vintage of wine at a soiree.

There’s a lot of media I don’t watch because I know it has a sad ending, or because it’s brutal. That doesn’t mean I think it’s bad media, I just know to pick media tailored to the escapism I want to have…? I feel like a lot of this is linked to trigger warnings, but backwards. A piece of media that deals with something triggering should have a trigger warning on it, but if you ignore that trigger warning it’s on you to handle yourself…? Omori is a game that has a trigger warning for suicide/self harm, and pretty early on in the game it has you mechanically kill yourself to progress the story. Yeah, it upset me, but it’s on ME to handle my reaction to it when the game *told me I’d have to deal with these topics*. It’s all in all a very respectful game and narrative, and it depicts a brutal topic brutally.

Okay but you mentioned Digimon and I've been wanting to talk about how asinine Ty's parents are like. They left their children at home all day for work (While one is horribly sick and their older sibling isn't even a teenager yet.) The little boy wants to go out and play so he takes his sister outside with him instead of abandoning her (which most little kids who wanted to play would've) and even played WITH her, she got worse which okay sure he's kind of at fault for but this is a CHILD who probably has little to no knowledge of how sickness works. They're in the hospital and Ty is literally panicking hoping she's okay and what does the mom decide to do?? Slap him !!! YAY When Kari (I think that's her name sorry it's been a while) gets sick you see how much this event affected him. Without his parent's emotional support the guilt and regret from this situation just got worse to the point he had a literal mental breakdown when he couldn't find medicine for her cold while they were in the Digimon world. My sibling mentioned this when I was writing this but their parents left Kari alone for MONTHS until she was dragged into the Digimon world (She's EIGHT YEARS OLD) thinking Ty would leave summer camp early to take care of her. (He's ten HES TEN) This sort of shit is what leads older siblings to resent their younger siblings and Ty's parents are lucky it didn't happen to Ty and Kari instead it just led to Ty having trauma and feeling a strong sense of guilt and protectiveness if she so much as catches a cold (Sorry if I got any of the names, events wrong I just remember being really really upset about this when I was young and both my siblings remembered this nearly the same way I did. I'll take the comment down when I rewatch this or if anyone corrects me sorry)

You can see the abuse not only impacting his self esteem, but his actions, hypersexuality, sexualising himself and although it being a painful relationship, enjoying it from time to time, cause that’s what SA can present itself as, some people become avert to sex, but some indulge in it, for different reasons, so never ever say something is fetishised until you know every perspective and every way abuse can present itself as, basically, before you judge, maybe crack open a book, surf the web and do your research, cause blindly attacking something cause you feel like what you’re saying is the truth is plain uneducated waste of everyones time.

The concept that a gay couple can be "not horny enough" to please an audience is honestly baffling to me. I honestly think it's better that way. Now I will say, this idea is kind of dependent on the writing of the rest of the show, but generally I don't see the problem with just having a purely romantic relation that also happens to be LGBT and not have any explicit scenes or implications. I find the "Haha I'm so horny" behavior really annoying. I genuinely hate sex scenes in most movies / shows because they feel like a waste of time, and it's like, I'm not trying to watch dirty stuff right now, that's not what my Netflix subscription is for. As a bi-lesbian with a bisexual girlfriend, she is more than ok with our relationship being vanilla af. Because we love each other and respect each other's boundaries. That's why we're dating. I'm not comfy with sex bc it's still new to me in terms of participation, and my girlfriend respects that. So we act lovey dovey, give each other pet names, compliment each other's looks(like "Oh you look so pretty!" "I just cut my hair-" "AND YOU ARE SO PRETTY ANYWAY!"), wishing each other good night and good morning, worrying about each other when our bodies decided to hate us that day, very protective whenever my bro decides to make a lewd joke about us(often times my girlfriend mildly threatens to shank him when he does that and holds off when I tell her no and call my bro out myself). Even if it's online, I feel a connection to her and she to me. I like the fluff, even if I joke about sex myself. I'm comfy talking about sex, but more comfy with the fluff. Angel dusts dynamic with vals feels real to me, the way val sends all the voicemails and switching his mood immediately between all of them, begging for him to come back and threatening him, and even showing angel dust enjoying it, because when your being abused or manipulated you obviously feel awful but you also are under a sense that its a good situation and are tricked into staying or liking it. This isnt fetishizing sexual abuse, people are too sensitive to ACTUALLY deal with it being SHOWN, instead of media companies talking about or implying it for 0.2 seconds and getting awards and praise for jackshit. Because as anyone who’s read the book knows, Frankenstein is not a doctor. But “Dr. Frankenstein” is what got popularized by media and Halloween stores sell stuff with that label, so that’s what everyone knows, even if that’s antithetical to Frankenstein’s role in the story. The snippets in this video were hard to watch, but it's also super effective in conveying his struggle. It also helps explain his self destructive tendencies, he literally states it in the episode that maybe if he's broken enough he'll stop being Val's favorite toy. Also Charlie and Vaggie are great, don't need to change a thing. Didn't know about the Voodoo thing, Honestly when people talked about Dr. Facilier in relation to this show, I thought it was about Husk, because they're both voiced by Keith David and both do card tricks. I don't engage with twitter so I am never on the pulse of their outrage

Alastor has Faciliers esthetics but his character is kinda similar with Tiana and Usurla from the little mermaid Tiana because of her ambitious and determined Spirit to fulfill her open her restaurant - which *kinda* relates to Alastor's Pride over his Radio Show and uninterest in anything else in order to achieve what they already believe in -( this is not to be negative toward Princess tiana im just pointing similarities nit entirely being mean to the gal...just a trait about Alastor that i perceive similar in a way - Tiana on a positive character which the opposite to Alastor's way if using his character but similar in a way) (Ursula frkm the little mermaid) - Alastor is similar to Ursula the two are confident and sassy in they're on way, charming and manipulative taking advantage of they're target at the weakest to make a deal,and since Alastor's most known for taking they're victim's voice to broadcast different but close to similar The reason why i consider Alastor's resemblance to facilier as esthetics is from the is the video said it well that Facilier is not for eben an ounce close to Alastor's strength abd personality so this is just my thoughts on the Video

You already know that the same people who say Charlie and Vaggie are too vanilla would lose their minds if the couple was more openly sexual. They'd accuse Vivienne of fetishizing gay women to no end. They already hate her for making Angel hypersexual, so I guess she isn't allowed to depict gay people at all. It's not the subject matter they dislike, it's just Vivienne herself, and they'll change their own personal views in the blink of an eye just so they don't align with hers. Similar to what you said in your last video, most "critics" are also artists, so there has got to be some degree of jealousy. People who think, "If I had my own show, it would be SO much better!" I've witnessed a number of people complaining about Adam being a white man in this show, saying that the first human on earth should be black and that Hazbin Hotel is promoting racist ideology. A take that is so stupid it can be immediately shot down with, "You're upset that the genocidal, misogynistic antagonist isn't a black man?"

So the Angel Dust episode... It was definitely an uncomfortable episode for me as I started crying while watching. And it was noticeable to my partner who was watching with me and paused it. I told him that I would be okay and to just continue playing the show so it could be over with (which, looking back at it now, is basically how I coped with most of the bad experiences that I went through.) Finding out that I wasn't the only one that was triggered (hate that term, its so bastardized) by the episode, while disheartening, brings me comfort in knowing that even though it was uncomfortable to watch, I'm not alone.

2:45 This seems obvious. Death of the Author is classic postmodern, which all these shows certainly are. So it doesn’t matter what the author intended or what they explain elsewhere - the work and the viewer’s interpretation are ultimately what matters in that reading, right?

I love Vaggie and Charlie's relationship it's nice to let something be soft for once. And hearing "being gay in a straight way" makes me laugh so hard lmao. But yeah you got me spot on towards the end about media illiteracy. Most of the critical analysis I do on media is just what I remember from high school english class and youtube videos. And I am well aware of that, its why I when my friend (who is studying film in college) asks me about my opinion on any film I always add the caveat that I am only speaking as someone from the general audience and not anyone who should be taken too seriously.

I remember back on the CBR forums X-books a critique about Wolverine stories is that they were too "chickens come home to roost" critiques of US foreign policy . I found that weird due to the fact that I was in college at the time having being told art is inherently political. Being from a west African family I thought that was common knowledge.
