Here's a little tidbit which might emphasise how much Henry initially thought of Anne Boleyn before he went mad. When a king (who has already had a coronation) marries, his new wife gets a separate coronation of her own (which the king plays no part in but watches from behind a concealed screen). At such a coronation, the Queen is crowned with the Queen consort's crown. However, at Anne's coronation, on Henry's insistence, she was actually crowned with St. Edward's crown (that's the crown which is only ever used to crown the actual ruling monarch, not the consort. St. Edward's crown is the crown you saw Charles III be crowned with at his coronation, although the current St. Edward's crown is a replica of the original, which was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell. The replica is apparently however made from the gold from the original. There's even good reason to believe the bottom half of the current crown is the actual original, which may have been saved from the melting pot). A Queen consort being crowned with this crown is a singular event in history, and had never happened before and has never happened since.

BTW, coronated is not a word in English. At a coronation a king is crowned.

One of the charges in Anne Boleyn's case was that she slept with her brother. There's a fantastic Yeoman Warder called Bill (Billy Beefeater_, he's left the Tower of London now but check out his tours recorded by the public - he was brilliant at explaining the history without it seeming like he was doing it. As Ann and I think Catherine were both beheaded at the Tower, he covers them both in the tour.

Henry, when he was champion of the Catholic church, denounced and had put to death, William Tyndale, for translating the Bible to English (a crime in the Catholic church). After he broke from the church, Tyndale's Bible, became the official (with a big picture of King Henry on the facings).

Ah yes, Henry VIII. A man more famous for marriages than his politics and the wars fought under his reign
@nez9751
@nez9751 Жыл бұрын
Well he was famous for all that which is what people focus on in the modern day, he’s a you tube/ tabloid wet dream before it ever existed. The truth of it he was actually famous for his politics and influence and seen as a right and just monarch Then it all started to go wrong. The common opinion I agree with is that he suffered bad health and brain damage after his accident and then became a monster. The medieval version of a modern good person being consumed by addiction etc and going off the rails When younger Henry was apparently a handsome gentle polite peaceful young guy, intelligent, articulate etc. the perfect king. The it all kicked off. He was an example how power can corrupt. He suffered a lot in his life, the problem was the culture and politics at the time couldn’t and wouldn’t and didn’t take control. He was king appointed by god (not my belief) , everyone was too scared to argue with him when he was basically mentally ill. Even his personal doctors weren’t able to tell him he was severely ill as they would be inadvertently predicting the death of the king , which was a crime resulting in prison torture and terrible death. They knew he was f***** but couldnt say it. Henry was a good man that turned into a bad one through bad health, brain damage , strokes in later life do this to good people. He was also manipulated a lot , but it is true he did end up a monster. And on top of all that he did have poisonous people around him that plotted to cover things up, and betray good people like Anne Boleyn , it was a bad time in our English history for sure. But it wasn’t all down to him

The only thing I'm not thrilled about with oversimplifieds retelling of events is his depiction of Henry the 7th and his fines. Listening to this kinda makes it sound arbitrary and not much reason for doing it other than paranoia, but what's important to note is England just had decades of civil war in which each new monarch gave concessions to the nobility in order to try and keep them on side, this resulted by the end of the civil war that that the nobility was far too powerful and was a potential threat to the stability of the entire realm. Henry's actions weakened the ability of the nobility to maintain and field their own private armies and brought the nobility back into line with the Monarchy, it made him unpopular but for the stability of the country, it was a good call.

Henry did truely love Jane Seymour and had she survived things may have been very different. He probably would still have shagged anything going but she would probably have remained Queen. Henry had requested that he and Jane be buried next to each other and they are It is believed that at their last meeting Anne Bolyne told Henry her daughter would one day be Queen and be a better stronger ruler than he ever was and she was right. . His last wife survived him but not by much dying quite young a year after him. Anne of Cleves lived the longest after Henry and got a tidy divorce settlement. His first wife Catherine lived the longest at 51 dying the same year Anne was executed. Less than 3 years after her divorce from Henry.

I am not sure where this idea of brain damage comes from because as far as I know this is the only history that has ever mentioned it. You have to remember that to the people of the time having a son as a royal heir was of supreme importance. It meant continuity and security for the nation. There had never been a woman take the throne in her own right before. After Henry's son Edward died and Mary came to the throne the nation was worried about who she would marry (and she would be expected to marry to provide the all important heir for continuation) because in a marriage of the time the man was expected to be the boss. So most nations were wary of a woman coming to the throne because they thought it meant that a foreign prince would actually end up ruling. It is why, even to this day, if a woman inherits the throne the man she marries is never crowned a king he is only a prince. When Mary's sister, Elizabeth I, came to the throne she got around all of this by not marrying at all.

I too am an English man (fee fie fo fum I smell the blood of an English man) Yes indeed. Just a short note to say thart Enjoy I do your kchannelle and am forward luckeeng to the Henry yhe 8th, a cool king (kule) His dad Hnry 7 was kule too but in a different way, he ended the wars of the Roses on Boswoth field while his slain enemy King Richard the 3rd was buried under what would become a car park for many a centaury. His final resting place was uncovered by some exquisite historical detective work. THEN; a comedian did a tour " Richard the 3rd, the car park years ! I ask you is no memory sacred herein England, England as William Blake ( an English poet, rather good but dead now) " all things begin and end on Albions rocky shore. He wer reet two. PS Albion is wot we secretly call England when we are at home with our loved ones. you too must keep this secret now or the druids will find you and take you to Stnehenge via Woodhenge and durrington walls ? Yes they exist ear in the inner ear of Albion. Looking forward to you take on/ reaction too old H 8 PS I dont know if you watched the coronation of King Charles the Petulant but I saw a distinct resemblance betwen Prince Loui and the 8th Henry to wear that noble but Exceedingly heavy Crown. Keep the good work a'flowing lads you do a gud un

He was TERRIBLE. Look more into it, he was a dictator who killed anyone who crossed him, and that seemed to depend on which way the wind blew. Have a look at Robert Roose and tell me Henry was sane. Anne Boleyn gave birth to one of the greatest Queens who ever ruled. That is at least some degree of karma.
@johnnyuk3365
@johnnyuk3365 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. We do forget amongst everything else that Ann Boleyn was the mother of arguably one our greatest Queens (more importantly Monarch), Elizabeth I. Joining our other great monarchs such as Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. I can’t quite think of it but I feel all three of them have something in common. Eliz I did do many nasty things including beheading Mary, Queen of Scots, who did gain vengeance after death by her son taking the English crown. So Mary, QoS, Elizabeth I and II, and Victoria. I still feel they have something in common.

@@nomadpurple6154 absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. We have almost no evidence of civilization patterns or settlements at all prior to the Neolithic, so while you are correct i would argue that it was still a hierarchical society. For example, if in a hunter-gatherer society one man is the best hunter in the tribe, it is likely that he will have higher status than others due to his increased ability to procure food.
