Married into a family of traditional restaurateurs, Prathiksha Nayak sought to create a dining experience that embodied her expression and memories of food growing up. The result is The LightHouse Restaurant, an airy space that is quite un-restaurant-like and more reminiscent of a South Canara home. Here, she serves coastal fare gleaned from family recipes and from her cooks who have worked in kitchens at legendary establishments along the West Coast. Keeping in mind her neighbourhood clientele, there’s a smattering of Chinese and North Indian on the menu too, but it is the dishes from the Kundapur-Mangalore belt that are much in favour here, as I discovered during a recent lunch here. Hope you enjoy this episode, take care and stay safe.

Drum Stick Koliwada
The robust koliwada masala finds its origins in the fishing community of Maharashtra, and although its combination with the drumstick comes as a bit of a surprise, its flavours seem to find a happy partner in this fibrous vegetable. I only wished the drum stick segments were longer, allowing one to chew on the fry better.

Squid Koliwada
The squid holds on to the koliwada masala in a tight embrace, one can taste its spicy notes in every crisp bite. Definitely, a must-order here.

Prawn Ghee Roast
The ghee roast masala is modified here to incorporate coconut and some cashew, so the chilli punch is toned down a wee bit, but that doesnt get in the way of an enjoyable ghee roast. One that sits lighter on the stomach as opposed to a traditional ghee roast preparation. The prawns are fresh and cooked right; this is the sort of dish that is begging to be mopped up with a neer dosa.

Prawn Hinga Udha
A gentle poached prawn curry, its flavours laced with the edge of hinga (asafoetida) and a lashing of coconut oil. Makes for a comforting combination with the boiled rice, the sort of preparation that you would taste in a Konkani home.

Kori Rotti
The chicken curry is robust in its flavours with a savoury onion punch, you can taste the coconut, the coriander, cumin and the slightly bitter edge of the mustard seeds in the seasoning. A delicious combination when ladled over the dry roti.

Bangude Pullimunchi
You can taste the sharp tartness of the tamarind (pulli) and the spicy punch of the munchi (chilli) in the gravy. The bangude (mackerel) is fresh, the masala though falls a bit short in steeping into the fish. An enjoyable curry nonetheless, with the appam.

Raagi Manni
The raagi manni makes for a soothing and light end to a meal here.
