Can really hear the effect of the worn tires with what they are talking about as far as it’s driving dynamics. I own one and the car decidedly defaults to oversteer when driven into a corner a little too hot not understeer. You also have to do something really dumb to it to make it understeer badly on corner exit as well.

Cup 2 tires are probably worth at least a couple seconds on that lap. Power and weight are pretty similar - in another video the weights were spot on each other and the Civic nominally only has 15 more HP.

They need to run the EN on fresh tires. And I would love to see them compare their times with the Manuel and the dct because they said they got a better time with the Kona and I’m sure the tires and the dct may have helped with that. Hope we don’t have to wait a year to get an updated lap time

My 2021 R is on 265/35/18 all around and on Cup 2s it's amazing. On RE71RS now which has similar stick but Cup 2 has better feedback at the edge. Going to Cup2 R this summer. Also going to a 305 upfront. 640hp and the chassis eats it up with a smile. FL5 should be even better

Can the Type R's stability control be fully switched off on "individual mode" with different damper setting not in +R? I've heard it can't but would be nice to know for real.

I blame Hyundai USA for not prepping the EN for a major oem track test. These are not their cars… it doesn’t make sense to push it over the limit if it’s not properly prepped. People should be glad they even tested it! They said they’ll try again it next year.

Great commentary. It would have been interesting if Car and Driver had put the same driver who lapped the Civic Type R Limited Edition last year, also lap the FL5 Type R to remove any possibility of a driver variable impacting lap times. The FK8 Limited Edition had Cup2s as well, but narrower tires at 245 vs. 265 on the FL5. It would be a good exercise to have the same driver and tire combination to level the plainfield for a comparison. Either way, FL5 did amazing!

That was my feeling Type R will beat Supra 3.0 at VIR. I'm looking for SCCA T3 race car and I think I know what I want at this point. Supra 2.0 is 3 seconds behind.

dang-- it's really disappointing for Hyundai to simply not be more prepared. With Road and Track at Monticello, the N was .8 seconds and 1.4 seconds behind the GR and Type-R respectively a lap. That is INSANELY close for the disparity between Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2s and PS4ses..........not even considering ADM, the value is just off the charts for the N.......and with skin in the game at 15k miles on a Performance Blue 6-spd, I absolutely love the car.......

EN w/ DCT is about 2 sec faster than Kona N at 2 min track. That puts it about 3min 3~4sec. If it has cup2, it will shave another 2sec ish, which is about 3:01~3:02. It won't be faster than GR or CTR for sure but respectable for what it is.

oh no no.. a track tire like cup 2 shaves off 2 sec on a short track of 1.5 min. Guarantee it will shave off atleast 3-4 sec to reach the 3:00 mark, just a second behind type R

3.03 for dct (higher dyno, quicker shifts) based on your comparison to kona n at 3.06, then expect down to 3 min mark with cup 2s.

There is a guy doing Time Attack with an Elantra N here on YT. He’s running 18x9 wheels with 255 RT660 track tires and he’s regularly beating Type R’s.

Snag@ Not that simple I'm afraid. Presenters contribute to this confusion with their lap time delta remarks. Besides tires, you have to factor in overall vehicle height, f/r track, the center of gravity, ride height, overall weight, f/r weight distribution.... etc. Couldn't help but notice for the high speed corners on the EN run the braking zones were pushed back to the 4+ board. Also for med speed corners the driver had to really feather the throttle to avoid understeer. When was the last time you heard that word mentioned in the same sentence as EN? Also in low speed corners had to wait until the car was pointed straight. Taken together the aggregate of these factors is much more than the 2 seconds you claim. I'd be underwhelmed if the EN on fresh tires didn't go at least 3 - 4 seconds faster than the lap time posted for the Kona N. And we all know the new ctr is on the optional $3.1K lightweight wheels to gain any advantage possible. Can't help but wonder if the ctr OEM tires are bespoke as well. EN on equal tires and wheels makes for a very interesting comparison. And would certainly be on par with the new ctr, with less HP/TQ which tells me the EN chassis is generating more mechanical grip out of the box... which is an advantage for Hyundai. And explains (partially) why they have had success in CTR.

I noticed several drivers doing completely random stuff like entering a corner from the center of the track, bashing over curbs, unnecessarily going into the grass, and taking bad lines constantly. Maybe they didn’t get enough track time this year but in all honesty watching this and LL 2022 back to back was pretty different.

I used to own Kia's until I got a job in the service department at a Kia dealership. The vehicles have too many electrical issues and cheap engines. Btw, Kia considers excessive loss of oil if it loses at least one quart of oil per thousand miles driven. If you're vehicle loses less than one quart of oil per thousand miles, Kia considers the oil loss acceptable and the engine to be good.

Yikes it's not entirely your fault but it's a wash tires are massive in general and even more so with a higher HP FWD car. The GR Corolla is underwhelming overall the FL5 is superior but not worth the markup minimum

Was up with the elantra (Hyundai /KIA) love? Does the steering wheel taste like beer or something.? It's a Hyundai, a car company that cuts corners alot. It's the most stolen maker because of lax security, engines catching fire. Etc etc
