My question might seem a little silly but it's about anchor points. I just bought my home and I'm nervous about messing up a door frame due to some anchor points. On the side of the doorframe seems fine but I'm concerned about bottom or top anchors. Any word on that or suggestion?

As I've gotten older (42) I've definitely come to appreciate band training a lot more. Free weights were taking a toll on my joints and led to a couple of unnecessary injuries. I still do some free weights but with bands. It let's me keep the weight lighter but still get a really effective workout. My son is almost 11 and recently started working out with me. I've been showing him how to do things with bands and letting him know that safety is paramount. It doesn't matter how much weight you can lift if you end up getting injured and potentially causing long-term damage. Keep up the videos and spreading the word about bands 👍
@JamesGrage2 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. I'm excited about creating some future content around this specific topic. The interesting thing is that with bands you have the potential to not only minimize injury but there's some good science to support the idea that you might even be activating the muscle more effectively. By the way, I do the same thing with my kids. There's no way that I would let my 9-year old daughter lift weights but she uses bands to improve her strength for her jiu jitsu.

Sir, you're absolutely right on resistance bands. I'am 53 years of age and started similar to bands. Everything James said is 100% correct. And bear in mind he discovered and promoted band training long before we had ever heard of COVID. I fortunately found him on You Tube when I was scrambling to find an alternative for workouts when the gyms closed due to the quarantine. Now I'm a bands only trainer, and like he highlighted, my physique is better, feels stronger, and is absolutely more functional that it was before weights. Now, at 55, I'm in the best shape of my life, and I have no desire to step foot in a gym. I love working out in nature, and I'll I need is a set of bands (or two), a pair of gloves, and my own motivation.

@JamesGrage2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the freedom you get is one of the best peripheral benefits of training this way. It was one that I didn't immediately acknowledge when I first started using the bands exclusively. In the beginning I was still in the gym. Then one day I looked around the gym with the fluorescent lights flickering and I thought to myself, "Why am I even in here"? I immediately packed up my bands and went to the beach. I had an amazing workout and then sat there and watched the sun go down. That was it for me. Game changer.

Hey Derick. You know it's funny you say that because I experienced the same recently. I hadn't lifted weights for what's getting close to be 5 years now but recently we shot some video to show what some of these band movements look like with traditional movements in a gym. I was a little surprised at how easy it was after having not picked them up for so long. It's a true testament to the effectiveness of bands as a legitimate training tool. The only downside was just that little bit of weights killed my shoulder and elbow.

Hey Dean. I can relate. With all the injuries that I've experienced it forced me to start looking for a smarter way to train, where I could still get great results but do it in a way that wasn't beating my body up. Training with weights can quickly become counterproductive - even for people in their teens and twenties. Problem is, when you're young you just don't care. The consequences are too far into the future for them to be concerned.

Discovering James Grage and Undersun changed EVERYTHING I thought about training with bands. I was searching for an alternative because I couldn’t increase load of weights to progress with training due to joints problems. I had these prejudices about the bands being good only for PT. James proved me wrong big time. What attracted me in his videos is the way he explained how bands work and how one should work with bands to achieve goals. I have been working out with bands for more than 2 years now. I was able to increase my muscle mass and I feel strong. People very often don’t believe that my definition comes from bands. 😂 I am a strong ambassador for James and Undersun. It might take some time to get used training with bands and find the routine but once you do - it is working!!! Also the training programs are a great guide (Just to make sure - I promote nothing, it is just my subjective opinion. I am not affiliated with Undersun in any way). Can’t thank James enough for allowing me to keep my fitness routine and not letting injuries stop my progress.

Ive been waiting on ACL and meniscus surgery. I used to work out with weights in the gym but it got to the point where even using machines was getting too painful. And I was losing confidence and began avoiding a lot of workouts because I was afraid of doing more damage, of falls, or mishaps with weights if my knee became unstable. I didn’t want my physical health and strength to deteriorate during the pandemic while waiting for surgery and was looking for alternatives when I found your older videos here on YT. Bought some bands and gingerly made a beginning. The bands allow me to modify and make adjustments I could never do with traditional weights and I’m able to stabilize myself in ways even machines couldn’t allow for. Ive been able to keep in shape and gain muscle and strength and even mobility in the affected leg as well as work on some of my wonky imbalances. I feel really good going into surgery (finally happening in a couple of weeks) and feel very confident about recovery. Knowing I’m never ever going to be dependent on gym availability or be limited to range of motion constraints ever again … well, its pretty awesome. I feel like i have total ownership of my body and my health. Thank you so much. (Also, my bands sure were appreciated by everyone in my household who couldn’t get to a gym during the pandemic!)

Thanks for this video ! I have been training with bands for about four and a half years. You were one of my first “teachers“ on KZbin and I feel deeply grateful. I am French and I bought two similar sets as yours, plus three stronger bands (from 770 N to 920 N), as well as a complete set of “rehab” bands. The latter are very underrated, in my opinion. I work my triceps, biceps and shoulders mostly with them, very effectively, as well as the rotator cuff: I find them more convenient than loop bands for many exercises, and they are perfect for long drop sets till complete failure. They can be combined with each other, doubled, folded... Those who think that with them you can’t work with intensity are just completely wrong.

I've always incorporated bands to some degree in my gym workouts, and they definitely helped during the pandemic. But after one of your videos caught my attention recently, I binged watched quite a bit in your playlists on both this channel and the Undersun Fitness channel, and now I'm really leaning towards doing more band workouts at home, saving the wasted time traveling to the gym and not being able to get on all the equipment I planned due to the late afternoon crowd....The fear of losing muscle and not spending 2 hours at the gym lifting weights is on it's way out. Your explanation and faq's really sold me. I purchased your band set even though I have plenty already, just because I love the color and fun element that your logo and name brings to it. I'm waiting for my Undersun gloves to arrive....not sure why it takes over a week, but using full finger gloves definitely helps with the grip and makes a difference in the precision and quality of movement. I didn't like the feeling of the bands on bare hands when I would grip it farther down for more resistance - I didn't know that this was the missing key, hence why I hardly ever used them other than for assisted pull-ups or standing glute hip thrusts! Fair play James, great vid. I only use your bands and have great results, daily. I have MS and really struggle with severe fatigue and mobility issues. 9-12 months in, daily (5xpw) I have designed the perfect set of just 1x20 reps x 8 exercises all done in 30 mins and lost 30-40lbs with no cardio! If it wasnt for you (and another YTer), I wouldn’t feel this good and I would still have no understanding on how muscles actually work. Thank you James 👊

Hey my friend! So recently I've been doing some PT with a doc who was part of the Miami Dolphins staff for 20 years. He's been helping me work through some old injuries from a really bad car accident that I had a long time ago. Now all those injuries are coming back to haunt me. LOL. Anyway, one of the other therapists that works in his office has MS. I asked him what his strategy was for managing it and he said that it was finding the right balance between doing just enough exercise to improve strength and mobility but without overdoing it and creating too much inflammation. The nice thing about the bands is they can provide as much stimulus as you need but they aren't as hard on your body. It's like the old bodybuilding saying, "you don't need to stimulate, not annihilate"
@curlychew27362 жыл бұрын
@@JamesGrage thanks for replying James, I appreciate how busy you are. I fully agree, the fatigue/ recovery balance is really hard to crack. I’ve been spending weeks-months now designing and focusing purely on form and resistance amount and I’ve found that a lighter warm up set then creates pitfalls in the working sets (I’ve never completed 1 full work after a warm up). For me anchoring at the perfect resistance’s throughout enables me to complete a 20 rep exercise, 1st 10 easyish but next 10 near to maxing out. Do that and 7 other upper body exercises (bonus points for extra reps) and that’s meee. Recovery time!! But not wiped out shanking recovery time!!

Great Summary James. What about your injury that forced you into bands?
@JamesGrage2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was a big part of it. I had a lot of old injuries from a bad car wreck that forced me to always look for smarter ways to train in order to get the same results. Bands ended being that ultimate solution. There was a very distinct turning point though and that was a really bad case of tendonitis turned to tendinosis that really put a dampener on my training. Shortly after that I went to bands only.

Brooo, you even brought our boy "bones" back....now i really believe you are back for good, hahaha. Bands are kind of superior to weights, because you have constant tension in several excercises where weights fail the tension because of the angle or position. I still like to combine both. But bands for real changed a lot and gave me an extra "boost" in exercises i plateaued for years. As summer is around the corner, i will just train with bands outside for the summer months and maybe stick to it...will see :)

I use resistance bands about the same way someone would use cable weights. I purchased cable weight attachments that you would find around the cable stations at any gym, rated carabiners used for industrial fall protection and a good assortment of resistance bands. I anchor to my power rack using bolt on shackles and do exercises very similar to the way you would do at local gym's cable station. I haven't seen anyone use them in this way and I quite surprised as I quite enjoy the pump I get from this.

Yep, they are great when you don't have a cable machine. You can do all the same movements. I do something similar when I work out in the garage, using regular cable attachments. I just don't have time for the gym, and I feel these resistance bands could realy be a life saver. My plan is to run for like 10-15 minutes and then exercise with these bands for 10-15 in the morning before work. I know it's not much, but I have to start small and build the discipline before I overwhelm myself. This video reall encouaged me that getting resistance bands is a good move.

Hey James, thank you for all of the older band work out videos on your channels, they’ve been really helpful. I’m excited to see the new videos recently. Would you be able to discuss best practices for avoiding loose skin from losing weight. I’m on the bigger side and and am worried about losing weight too fast. When is someone at risk of getting loose skin and what is the ideal amount of weight to lose per week etc. Thanks.
@JamesGrage2 жыл бұрын
Hey my friend. From what I've observed over the years with friends that have either lost a lot of weight (including older bodybuilders that lose a lot of muscle size) is that it's not just the loss of size but it's also the loss of elasticity in the skin that seems to make the biggest difference. The older we are the more this becomes a factor. It might be worth going into a medical specialist to see what their thoughts are.
