How to Get Section 8 Immediately
Emergency section 8 HUD housing choice vouchers.
Priority, or emergency section 8 HUD vouching choice vouchers, can be immediately provided to senior citizens, the disabled, veterans, women fleeing domestic violence, people fleeing a disaster and others. With the waiting list for many local public housing authorities (PHA) near you closed or backlogged for many months or years, a housing choice voucher can be very difficult to get. Find how below, in an emergency, an applicant may be given section 8 housing immediately to meet their need. The priority system used for applications to determine who is qualified is based on a point scale.
There are never any guarantees to having the application or wait process accelerated or to bypass the existing waiting list. There will always be limited funding from the federal government and a shortage of low-income housing units. So even though a section 8 emergency voucher is possible, the process for how to apply is still long, complicated, and time consuming.
Waiting list for section 8 emergency housing choice vouchers
There are a few different ways to be given priority for immediate HUD section 8 housing choice vouchers near you. Note that the applicant still need to meet all the other program terms, such as be low income, have limited assets, have residency within the jurisdiction, and other criteria. Any home or apartment provided will also be income based, and the tenant will need to pay 30% of their total household income for the rent on the section 8 property. The landlord also needs to participate in the program. Those conditions of the HCV program do not change.
Emergency section 8 is also called a priority list. The determination is based on a point scale, with a higher score meaning the applicant may be placed towards the top of the wait list. The person seeking the rent voucher also needs to have a home available that meets their preference. All of the following groups of individuals may be able to bypass a section 8 waiting list to get an emergency voucher immediately. Or they may be put to the top of a waiting list when the next voucher or apartment becomes available in their community.
Senior citizens and the elderly, and there may be supportive housing offered too them immediately that offer on site medical care.
Disabled, whether mental or physical.
Veterans and service members can bypass the wait list as well to be given an emergency section 8 HUD voucher.
Anyone that was displaced from another public housing unit.
Women (or men) as well as children fleeing domestic violence or abuse may be placed into a shelter, then moved on an emergency basis into the Housing Choice Voucher section 8 program.
If someone has had a house destroyed by say a fire, floor, or natural disaster, they may be given priority too. But more than likely FEMA housing is used for them.
All those situations may apply. A local HUD qualified public housing authority can provide more information on the terms and conditions as well as how to apply. However, the most likely situation in which a emergency housing choice voucher is given will be if the applicant is a very low income senior citizen or disabled person. The Department of Housing and Urban Development makes more efforts to get them to the top of waiting list, if their housing unit preference becomes available.
To apply for an emergency section 8 voucher, and to try to be given priority to bypass a waiting list, immediately call a local public housing authority in your town or county near you. Select a state below to find a housing authority in your area for priority review. I’m on section8 and if you think waiting on the waiting list is hard! It gets harder when you get the voucher and can’t find a home to secure in the time frame they give you. INMAGINE all the time waiting in the wait list and in the end you loose it cause no housing is available! I’m facing this right now it’s not easy at all it’s frustrating and very stressful

Thank you for advocating for people sort-of-speak. I wonder what I can do NOW, or in the future, as Santa Barbera, CA. Housing Authority told me "we don't participate in that program" asking "who do I hook-up with to get info about "First Time Home Owner Program?" Then, I replied "Well I thought it was a Federal program?" she merely repeated herself, like jackass and that was the Director. Also, inquired into their "Workforce" Program for 1-bed/Studio, if I was merely Seeking work. For those willing to "Relinquish" or don't have cars with the idea being "Eco-Green" using bus line, in the immediate downtown/beach area because really, they DON'T have parking. In Alameda County, CA, I called the 211 number and got the CES screening intake. They said it can take 2 - 4 weeks before I get a call back for the CES/CoC questionnaire. 😲 The HRC doing the CES questionnaire doesn’t take calls, they call you. (56, disabled, homeless in vehicle.) Apply for Section 8 and I had a social worker to call me up at 11:45 in the middle of the night tell me I got approved for Section 8 it turned out I did not get approved she did not know what she was doing long story short because it goes on and on I tried to change social workers and the supervisor over all the social workers there would not let me change and would not tell me who was over them and everytime I call she can't tell me that she don't return my phone calls but you are awesome and you tell it like it is and I love that about you thank you so much for sharing everything with us

I’ve been on the waiting list since like 2019. I applied via the CEL or COC for my state, they said they would put me on a list for emergency housing vouchers, and after 4 months I was told that never existed, and they won’t help with emergency housing. The best they can do is put me in a shelter, which puts me at risk for COVID as I’m disabled and at risk.

Hi Thank you for helping all of us! I hope you can help me. I just moved back to SD from Vegas. Long story short had bad landlord in Vegas that rented me a condo with black mold I found out and bam Im getting a no cause 30 day. I stand up for my rights but its a money town and with a property man. that's been in business 25 yrs. Little man got kicked to the curb literally. Property management made it so hard to get my assets in the house I had to sign a settlement under duress YES. But my business was in there and our whole life savings over 250 k. We go to drive the Uhaul (which U-Haul rented us a truck with a bad exhaust system) About to go to arbitration for that. OUR U-Haul gets stolen the last night we were in Vegas. Now Im in San Diego no way to make money until I recently just got a job but doesnt start for a month. I have a son who gets out of a treatment center he was in for over a year and they just basicly threatened me to come get him, refused to transfer him to San Diego when the laws say you could do that. Im staying at a friends that I have to be out Aug 1st. and my son cant stay here. My son is out running a muckkk back in Vegas and needs help and is coming back before school. But I can't find a place that I can afford, its not a problem getting in one, but I need help. I've applied for section 8 and all the different lists. I have as interview with Salvation Army if they answer there phones. But my question is do I have to have a disability (I do) But my son has a huge one, and being that they just kicked him to the curb and needs help shouldn't that help me to get a EHV? Or I need to just buy a house through hud. So I need a appointment. if you can help I'm more than happy to pay you. how do I make a appointment??

I am very physically disabled with mobility issues, asthma, severe sinus infections and cannot stand or walk for long periods of time. I live in subsidized county housing but I am continually hassled my managers who IGNORE my disability issues. I will be calling you. I have been threatened with eviction because I cannot keep things as clean as much as they want & some are their issues are insane, made up arbitrarily as well. I have tried for years to get a caregiver but I either get no responses or people don’t want to drive 10 miles. I was in a bus accident six months ago that permanently damaged my knees. It’s why I cannot stand, walk, sit, clean, etc. without pain and screaming.

So sorry. Many towns have a type of 'Helping Hands' program for Seniors who are volunteers- who do handiwork, possibly even cleaning. Ask local town hall if there's anything like that for disabled. They may have charity resources that can help too. Also ask faith based groups. And consider Knee Replacement surgery - ideally 1 at a time (in case of a problem w/1 surgery).

I am almost walking!!!! I was born with chronic hip dysplasia, I lived in Shriners as a child, it felt, and since after 30+ surgeries ( 2 months old - until age 39 ? My last one, hopefully tomorrow or soon!!!.) I will have survived two Dr.'s breaking my femur or destroying precious bone so I went from well to basically worse than before and weaker, older I am desperately looking for a hud home cabin style in a warmer climate, me and my 16 yr old who is busy high school boy so Dad is helping out with his living until I can get a home. I have never had one and my parents are on thin ice with adult services. I am trapped with people who verbally abuse me. It's not safe and I broke my hip falling here so I should'nt be here.

Wow this is crazy I'm at the hospital with my disabled daughter in CA. We got illegally evicted and now have til the end of the month to find a new home. I would never believe this is actually happening I'm so scared I'm loosing my mind my daughter is on oxygen wtf California courts are letting this happen!!! I hope you find a home soon 😢😅😢

I've made it until now . I live on Maui hi because I kinda have too . I paid my November rent. Had to go to California asked my if I could pay my rent by casheare check like before. I paid nov and got on a plane 11/16/22 the next day he though all my belongings out

Im 56 and i need housing now im on sec8 i had nobody to help me get housing i dont want to be lost when i didnt know what was going on and i dont want to continue to be lost when i know its been nothing but trouble i dont feel safe anymore i want to help myself please help me if i have to pay more then its worth paying the rent to be in a stable home im done what i had no idea what i had to suffer every single day.❤❤❤❤

I am on SSIDI and currently. Homeless in Texas I can't seem to even find a application to get on a waiting list I still hold a mortgage on a home that I was illegally evicted from back October 21,2020 the lender that offered me a cash offer used my e sign from 1 page contract to buy my mortgage to have me removed with out ever paying me a dime.

I'm on two waiting lists in Florida, and I'm still looking to get on several list more until I make it 🙏🏻 it's really exhausting. We are a family of 3, my father, my son and I, but my father doesn’t want to apply and he’s a Vietnam Veteran still working part time at 81 years old 🥹 he doesn't want to stop working yet! But I’m applying for me and my son only. My son has special needs, mental/ behavioral impairments, disabled. Can I apply to other states? or when i get the section 8 voucher, can i transfer to any county i want in fl, or to another state and not lose the voucher? Thank you very much. Im in PB elderly housing in California and i have been trying to add my partner on my lease with me but was told i can only add a member if i married him or if he was my care worker. They tell me that adding a member at the time of your recertification is not the time to add a member. I updated by adding my partner to my application online before i was processed for a unit. there had to be a way to add a member..

I live in public housing right now. Here is the problem. They moved me from an apt in Oct that had bad mold to one that I believe because of my symtoms has mold in the ventilation system. I have called as well as hand delivered a letter about having it checked. I want to move to section 8, I have hyperthyroidism because of being exposed to mold in the former apt for almost 2 years. I have depression and anxiety and have seen a Dr. for those and several other mental issues. These apts are very old. I need to be in a updated , free of mold apt! It is adding to my anxiety and health issues being where I am. WHAT DO I DO? When I asked I was told that I'm not priority because I have shelter. I NED OUT QUICK BEFORE MY MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH WORSEN. HELP!

Amputee rt leg left leg twice broke back to back. Trying to heal and return as prosthetic orthotic tech. Rented freshly Kilz house lots of covered up toxic mold. Roommates breathing got so bad couldn't work moved in with friend. I saw water leak notified landlord he said he was insured fire only no mold or water damage so it was on me. Magistrate judge wouldn't allow me to introduce evidence, I owe a handy man over 15,000.00 got evicted called all orgs no help I'm still sick on mold toxicity Homeless on disability , no idea what to do.
