Cold showers can be one of the most effective practices you can do at home every day to feel your best. I have previously discussed the numerous benefits of cold exposure. But the thought of standing in cold water while you wash your body and hair might not sound appealing. How can you make yourself take a cold shower every day and not hate every minute of it?

Update: I actually ended up taking a cold shower later that day after watching a few more of these types of videos, and have been doing so ever since. I have to say that my stress has noticeably gone down at work. I use to tense up in my shoulder and neck area, resulting in a nasty little headache. I had those for about a week straight, and right around the time I started taking cold showers, it went away. I started off with 2 minute showers, then worked up to 3 minutes, and now a week and a half later, I am taking 10 minute cold showers twice a day.

I started like 5 days ago. The first time I couldn’t last a minute, I was shaking, sore and felt like dying really, and I also only let it touch my back. The next day I gave a bit more effort and got the minute in, I was so happy with myself and didn’t feel any tiredness, it was good. I went from Not being able to do a minute to now being able to do a minute and a half while washing myself.

@@o0jalen0o27 I would recommend getting used to the temperature first. What I did was I let it touch my back then slowly the rest of my body, this was so I got used to the temperature and it didn’t feel as bad. The head is one of the hardest locations of the body to cover so don’t start with that. I know putting your whole body in is tough but you will get used to it overtime, I believe in you. Also nobody starts perfect, it takes about a week or two to get into the groove of it, so don’t rush yourself.

@@o0jalen0o27 I know that feeling the coldness of the water will demotivate me, so I just jump right in. I try to tighten my body and hold my breath as I enter the shower and loosen in after about 3-8 seconds. For my first showers, I only let it touch my chest/front body because for me, it feels less cold there. If you are new to it, I would suggest using some sort of distraction to distract you from the cold like music, and a toy you can fiddly with/squeeze. And remember: FOCUS ON KEEPING YUR BREATHING SLOW Wish you success in your cold shower journey! The first step is always the hardest, but I know you will get used to it.

It’s great when you are having stress /anxiety /depression and you need something to get you to “snap out” from that horrible feeling. Also running to your hearts content helps as well . @Tom Tom Sure man. A cold shower wakes you up in the mornings and are great post-workout (wait till you cool down first at least though) as the cold water is going to assist in muscle recovery. I remember years ago at my old mans place the reason I took cold showers was because whoever built the house thought to put a smoke alarm right outside the bathroom door. I remember adapting to that was a pain, the trick for me was to ease into it. Have you tried a slow, gradual process? Start a bit colder than your usual but still comfortable to you and as you shower, every 30 or so seconds make the shower just a tiny bit colder, get comfortable again, and repeat until it's too much. Stay in that for as long as you want (longer of course is better but it's up to you) then turn off the shower and dry off. A nice thing after doing that is when you exit the bathroom, you're gonna feel a lot warmer than if you just got out of a hot shower. Hope this helps you somehow

@@Adam-qu5uk that's exactly the point, for me at least. (Didn't realize I was writing an essay here lol.) If you go into a cold shower, you know that nothing bad is going to happen to you, quite the opposite it is actually good. The only bad thing about it is while you are in the shower it is just freaking cold and there is nothing enjoyable about it. Because the activity itself is not just not enjoyable but also quite bad itself, your fear starts to kick in. That fear, which makes every cell in your body attempt to go in reverse. When you stand in front of that cold shower your mind will start making excuses "you don't have to do it", "just put the water to warm it's going to be better". That is the exact fear (for me at least), when I have to give a presentation, talk to a girl, try and step up at my job or university. It's the exact same fear for me and that is exactly why I do it. I conquer that fear every time I step into that shower. I overcome it and feel the growth inside my head. I've been taking cold showers for like 3 days now (just begun doing it) but I feel amazing after conquering the fear. I've also realized that I am more confident with how I ineract with people because I am learning to conquer that fear. In short it is helping me get mentally stronger. Try it once and see how you feel about it.

I'm 59 and been taking cold showers daily, and practicing Wim Hof breathing method for 1 1/2 years now. I do 3 minutes cold shower (at the end of hot shower) and 5 to 7 rounds of breathing technique with breathe retentions up to 3 minutes, by round 7....no longer use my sleep apnea machine, and haven't had a cold, or allergic reaction since I began. I have learned to concentrate on my breathing, then after 3 in/out breathe cycles, I’m absolutely fine. I’m in England, so it will be interesting to see how I progress with this into the winter. Within the next couple of months as we progress into the colder weather, I’ll hopefully be able to handle the reduction in temperature. I’m combining this with semen retention, & I’ve noticed some big positive changes in myself recently. May the improvements continue.

I developed CRPS/RSD of my lower left extremitey/primarily my L foot after a orthopedic surgery years ago, showers, temp. change, exposure to wind, certain textures, etc etc were all very painful, set off a pain response, especially cold exposure, I dreaded it. After practicing WMH as well as other meditative practice, I'm able to take a cold shower regularly, which I believe has decreased my s/s dramatically. For me when I turn the shower on I start with setting 6 out of 10, which is about the temperature of a swimming pool. Get washed, wash hair etc. -Then after a couple of mins I turn it down to 5, which is noticeably colder than my body temperature. Keep it at 5 for about a minute. -Then down to 4 for 30 seconds. -Then down to 3 - 3 is cold and if I don't slow breath I start hyper ventilating and feel slightly uncomfortable. -After a min or so 3 feels fine, at this point whacking it down to 0 feels hardly any different. -Stay at 0 for about 3-4 mins -Tips: Make fists to keep your hands warm as it can really start to hurt the hands. -Cupping your junk helps too. -Get your head and neck under - don't be a pu$$y! DO IT NOW! -Have a hot face wash before so you can open and clean your pores first before washing with cold water which will close the pores. -Be prepared for shrinkage if you are Male.

I believe the rate of change is what shocks someone. If you were in a quiet environment and suddenly a loud alarm sound starts it’ll surprise you - this correlates to the temperature different when you take a cold shower.

I lost my hearing for 3 weeks in one ear, i went to the doctor and had them flushed out. My hearing did not return. He said they were clear of wax. I thought when i have a hot and cold shower my nasal passages clear up so why not my ear passages, i let the hot water run into my ear by opening it up for one minute, then turned to cold for one minute. It didn’t help immediately but an hour later my hearing returned, it was amazing, my hearing is better now than ever.

My water heater broke so I have no choice but to take cold showers until I get it replaced. And I live in a cold climate so the water is VERY cold. I start by just putting one segment of my body in at a time to get used to it (legs, arms, then torso). I also turn it off in between washing so I can complete my shower routine without getting too cold. It's really uncomfortable at first but afterwards I feel amazing!

I bathed in warm water, then turn it gradually cold. I do this because in my experience, its easier to lather soap in warm water. It also lets it be less of a shock than going straight to pure cold. Also, my water is from a deep well, so it’s plenty cold.

I find it works best to make the change to cold water by beginning with only one quarter turn of the water knob, so your body adapts much quicker to cool water as opposed to cold water. Now, after doing this on a regular basis; you are ready to take the knob another quarter turn, so the temperature delta is halved each time. This helps with duration and the adjustment is less of a shock. Also, in a seasonal climate, the winter is far more taxing to endure the cold than in July. So, if you are a procrastinator, this is a good reason to mind meld across the change of season; which is nice.

The absolute best way to get ready for a cold shower is to have a warm shower , crank it up until its almost too hot to bear , then turn on the cold, kinda like having a sauna & then jumping into cold water ( known for it's health benefits for centuries). Jumping straight into a cold shower ...... Overhyped & nobodies gonna do that!.... PS I've personally done the hot/cold shower for probably 20 years now , it feels amazing .&....every morning I look forward to it ! ......Wouldn't look forward to a cold shower LOL!

For me I hate waking up in the morning and also don't want to take caffeine, that stuff adds up some serious expenses for a broke guy like me. A drive to planet fitness for a shower is my norm (don't have a shower here) and when I take a warm one I feel soothed and while nice, just makes me more tired. A cold shower though really wakes you up but they're... annoying, take it from someone who has been doing them for years

If you are Hyperventilating buy controlled breathing, you are definitely NOT using the WHM. The breathing method he uses is not forcing out the breath, but letting go of the breath which is actually gentle. I keep finding people who profess that Wim’s breathing method is Hyperventilating and to me, that means they have never had a hyperventilation event. I have been practicing the WHM for 2 years now and started using his method because I was in the habit of Hyperventilating when stressed and now I never have those episodes.
