How to use Meguiar's Clay Bar Kit W/Paul Henderson 4/2018

As of September 2019 I have been using a-2 Bucket w/Grit Guards & 2 Wash Mitts when washing my new Chevy Silverado All-Star Edition Truck that I purchased on 9-2019.
As for using the clay bar, I will still continue use straight, circular & diagonal motions....It all depends on where your at on the vehicle.
I just might have to do a new clay barring video on the new truck. I did clay bar it the first week I had it. So the next one will not be until 9-2020...

How to use the Meguiar's Clay Bar Kit. This kit will make the finish on your vehicle smoother than a sheet glass. It will remove the very fine contaminants that are imbedded into the paint that washing and waxing can not remove alone. In this video I will show you the steps to achieve this. The three main steps are, A thorough Washing, Using the Clay Bar, Then applying the Wax. There are about five more steps, that are mixed in with the three main steps . And of course you need to start with a paint that is in good condition, with a solid clear coat.
This is my personal truck, A 2006 Chevy Silverado V-8 5.3. She is 12 years old today, with 90,000 miles on odometer, she's always parked outside. And as you will see at the end of the video, my Silverado is as shiny as the day I bought her. With proper care of your paint , yours will look just as great for a very long time.

if the vehicle's finish is in good shape and not oxidized this clay bar will make a huge difference in the feel of the finish. Just be sure to thoroughly clean the finish, and use light pressure when using the clay bar. Yes you can go in circles diagonal straight lines up and down back and forth it really doesn't matter it's just a preference and where you're at on the vehicle.

Glad I could help. And I know it looks like I didn't spend much time using the clay bar but I said this before in other comments less is best except for when it comes and lubricant use plenty of it. least amount of pressure and least amount of time while using the clay bar is best. Only rub it until it feels smooth. And if the clay bar gets too dirty after turning it over onto itself throw it away and use a new bar. a dirty clay bar will scratch your paint...

You do not need to dry the car all the way, just a quick wipe. Just use plenty of the quick detailer.. you will be amazed how smooth your paint will be. Provided your paint is in good shape. Just waxed my truck yesterday.

sometimes I wash it the night before and then first thing in the morning I'll do my clay barring or waxing. On this day it wasn't hot but the hood was getting warm.

Nice. Just use plenty of the quick Detailer for a lubrication. What I do about every couples square feet I will put the clay bar in a bucket of water rub between my hands just to knock off any loose contaminants if there's any.

That's great, glad to see you used all Maguire's car care products. How does the finish feel on the back of the hand. Try this too, once a month do a quick sray wax with Maguire's quick wax, its a great in between waxing. I bought a new Silverado truck back in September 2019, I had a buddy clay bar and wax it the first week I had it. [ my back was jacked up ] I then did a polish and wax job myself the first week of January. And it looks AWESOME.

I wax the car about every six weeks, it's standard procedure when I wash the car. For next time, I'll be investing in a buffer, so I'm researching those. As for next time, I think I'll be moving over to their Pro line.

It worked. The clay removed the white over sprayed on my gray car. I just have to applied more pressure on some tough spots. The surface feels sooo smooth now. Yay !!!

That's great. Try it on the windshield to, you won't believe the difference it makes when you use the wiper blades and then once a month use the spray wax after you wash it, it will help to maintain that just waxed look between Washings. I I ust washed and spay waxed mine today. Plus an oil and filter change.

Nice, just be sure to clean the finish extremely well. Use plenty of quick detailer or similar product for lubrication. I don't know how dirty or contaminated your finish is, If it's bad you may want to pick up a second bar so if the first one becomes to dirty to use, you will have a spare. You can rinse the bar with soap and water, just keep an eye on it.

@@actualsurfer that's a tuff one.....it might help but if it's oxidized really bad, sometimes it beyond help... I had a buddy that had an oxidized clear coat on his firebird, it made a little difference. but his was pretty bad though. Try it on an inconspicuous spot.....it can't hurt to try....

After I washed it and went to wax it, there were many things embedded in the paint. I dont want to get too aggressive all at once. I picked up the clay kit you rec'd. Ill follow your advice and start on a small section on a fender.

@@actualsurfer When I read your first comment I pictured it looking like my buddies car that I told you about. If the paint is in good shape and it has some imbedded contaminates the bar I used in the video should do the trick. On the Maguire's site they do sell a more aggressive bar but you are right you don't want to get to aggressive from the start. Be sure to use plenty of the quick detail as a lubricant and maybe pick up a second clay bar kit, that way if the bar gets really dirty you can switch it out. Try this also, keep a clean bucket with car soap and every small section that you do dip the bar in the bucket and wash off any loose particles from the bar.

And yes I still use one bucket and a synthetic chamois. This week I just shampooed the interior with the Bissell Spot clean PRO and wow looks brand new.

Hi Ko Kelly Just so you know I washed the truck the day before. I did a quick wash job just for the video. I do know that if the paint is dirty I would start on the very top and work my way to the lower portions. As for doing circles, it doesn't really matter it's going to scratch it if you do circles, back and forths, and up and down motions. it all depends upon how clean you keep the mit and if you have enough suds for the dirt to flow off.. I do have a grit guard but I did not use it that day because the paint was clean. As for using a chamois, I've been using them for as long as I can remember I always store them wet in there storage container so they never get dried out. Clay barring should be done at least once a year and waxing should be done at least three to four, it all depends upon how many miles you drive and the weather conditions. Kind of funny though, my truck is 13 years old and people ask me when I've had it repainted. so to me that tells me that I must be doing it right, and it works for me. Now you can wash and wax and clay bar your car however you want it all depends upon the person that's doing it and the way I do it has works for me all these years. I had a 1989 bright red Pontiac firebird it had 325,000 miles on it, the paint looked awesome when I got rid of it. And yes I do regret getting rid of it.

You're welcome. Just so you know. And some of the comments people said you can't do circular motions it has to be a back and forth direction because it'll scratch. It's all a preference of how you want to do it on that particular spot. Just stay off the sharp edges use light pressure and make sure you keep plenty of spray lubricant on the finish. And most important make sure your finish is clear of any loose debris like sand, or dust because that will scratch the paint. Happy clay barring.....

Do to some comments I received for not using a 2 buckets, & 2 mitts washing technique, one bucket for the soap and one bucket for the rinse water. I do use a soap gun to to help with loosening the stuck on grime. I always wash the from the top of hood and roof and then work my way to the lower panels. My truck was not dirty in this video and the temperature outside was not hot. As for using the clay bar, it does not matter if you go in straight lines, circular or diagonally. it all depends on where you are at on the vehicle, I do a little bit of all three while clay barring. ****** So, as if September 2019 I have been using a 2 bucket-with Grit Guards and a 2 mitt washing technique on my new 2019 Chevy Silverado that I bought in September 2019.*****

Thanks for taking time to post. I've never had luck working in direct sunlight, either washing or waxing. I wonder what I'm doing wrong? I live in SD county, CA, and it's not even hot here. I see people work in direct sun with no issues. It's a mystery to me.... Also, you have an opinion of paste vs liquid meguires wax? I've always felt like the additional elbow grease needed for past would somehow mean a better bond.

I started early in the morning. By the time I got done filming this video it was getting a little warm but it was still doable with the temperature. When I was younger with my 89 firebird I used to use the meguiars paste wax and once meguiars came out with there liquid waxes I've been using liquid ever since. I do prefer their ultimate liquid wax I have been using this one for years, spreads evenly and comes off easily. I don't know if there's a benefit to using paste wax over liquids. But waxing should be done early in the morning if it's done outside or under a tree or in the shade if it's hot outside. Where I used to live in Orange county we had a huge tree in the front yard so if it was hot and sunny out that's where I would do the waxing never had any problems. I always hated being stuck in the garage doing stuff.

Thanks...you should see my new truck....check out my 6 month review video of my 2019 Silverado....be sure to use Meguires Quik Detailer or Mothers spray as a lubricant...do not use just water or soapy water...Plus it doesn't matter you use circular, straight lines or diagonal or triangular motions...you can wash the bar with soapy solution to keep it clean as your clay baring...if your paint is really contaminated you may want to flatten out the bar and fold it over onto itself...I usually get 2 to 3 uses out of one bar,,,,my paint is never very conaminated....

Thanks for the video. I just got a clay bar kit for Christmas and am excited to use it. I do have a couple of questions: I live in the Houston area where outside temps are above 80 for a lot of the year, how does temperature and direct sunlight affect the clay bar and waxing process? I don't have much access to a shaded area in my apartment complex and have always heard that you shouldn't wax in hot temps. What are your thoughts?

i recommend doing this early in the morning if you have to do it outside because you have no choice. But it's best to do it under a covered area like a garage or car port or a tree. doesn't matter how hot the outside temp is, but the temp on the vehicle paint needs to be cool or warm to the touch (NOT HOT). be sure to do the windshield this will help to keep the wiper blades from skipping. I,m clay baring my truck the first week of next month in 2019.

@@frankbiz it will remove the fine contaminates stuck on the paint. But sorry, it will not remove scratches. Meguiars does sell a product for that purpose. I think its called Meguiars (Scrratch X 2.0). scratch remover but be careful not to over do it or you will damage the clear coat. Some scratches can only be reduced but not removed..

Carlos Raúl Palomino Sánchez Mother’s Back to Black is a GREAT product also! Once a year I use their B2B cleaner, and use the B2B restorer cream every time I wax my truck. Nice deep black trim without fading or streaking - and it’s not shiny. I prefer matte black on my FJ Cruiser.

Meguiars said it's recommend to go in linear lines instead of circles because if you scratch the paint it will show up in the circles... But it will show up the same in lines or circles....my Pontiac was 23.5 years old and it had not one swirl mark on it....it's all in the prep.

great editing i must say. i am getting the clay kit due to spray paint over spray when i painted some black plastic bits on my Pagani. clay seems like a tedious step but it is essential for the imbedded stuff that is hard to see with the nude eye. i was going to do it anyways but the overspray motivated me much more. then i will use Groit's One Step Sealant as the last step. not sure how they all compare but i like it so far and have to use it up :) i wish i got paid to comment like that for companies but i do not. pop tarts® don't pay me to say they are the start of a wonderful day. rolex© doesn't pay me to say they are priceless as well as timeless. pagani© didn't give me a free car as long as i comment about them 100,000 times a day.

At 14:55, you use a towel to remove the wax prior to buffing. Why is that? Can you use the rotary buffer to remove the wax while buffing to a high gloss?

It doesn't really matter if you go in lines or circular motions. I called up Meguire's and yes they do recommend circular motions but it's whatever you prefer. Like I said before in other comments I do circular I go back and forth I go up and down, it doesn't really matter. You're going to scratch the paint it's not because you're going in circles it's because you didn't prep the finished correctly like making sure it was clear of loose dirt and small particles.

What can i use for water spots my wife has a 2019 Dodge charger Black I bought the clay bar kit but didn't see the difference on the water spots looks the same the paint is smooth but water spots are really on the paint what do you recommend

That's a tough one. Is it water spots from sprinkler system on a hot day. If so those are the worst. Try this.... Get a spray bottle, pour a half cup of water, use a mineral free water, soft water is best or buy a bottle from the store. then add half cup white vinegar, mix well. Spray the mixture on the affected area, let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then wipe off then wash and dry the area. Do this in the shade or a garage. It should do the trick. Then clay bar your car and re wax it. The same thing happened to me on my firebird quite a few years ago. It sucks, biggest spots I'd ever seen. It was a 100 degrees plus day, the sprinklers at a mall I was at went off and the high calcium water dried on the paint. It was so bad I could feel the spots.I used a vinegar/water solution back then, but I still had some very light rings left behind, they did vanish over time. back then I don't think there was a product to get rid of the rings that were left behinds from the hard water spots I hope this helps.... it doesn't really matter, what every works at the spot you are on the time of claying. I do a lot of back and forth motions and some circles and what ever it take. Just be sure the paint is very clean of any type of debris or you will scratch the paint. The reason most people say to do circles is so that if you do scratch the finish it will be in circles, I say then don't scratch it......

@@vinr Yes I would recommend it. Meguiares sells an Ultimate Polish for the first step and then top that with there Ultimate Wax. Of course do a thorough washing first. As for using the Clay Bar, only if it doesn't feel smooth to the touch. That would all depend upon how long it sat on the lot for. But if it was smooth and you still want to use the clay bar just to do it, just be sure to do it really light and use plenty of lthe Meguiares Quick Detailer as a ubrication. after all the clay bar is an abrasive tool to use, but if used correctly it'll make your paint look phenomenal. The day after I bought my bright red 1989 Pontiac Firebird, I put one coat of the McGuire's car cleaner wax, and two coats over there carnuba wax I think. If they would had a clay bar back then, I would have used it I had that Firebird for 23 years the three hundred twenty five thousand miles on it and it still look damn great. I just got tired of it and I wanted a truck

Yes you should apply a good coat of wax. The best would be to use a polish then follow it up with a wax. If your finish is in great shape a good coat of wax will do just fine. A polish will help to fill in some some imperfections on the clear-coat, So It can't hurt to use a polish first. As with my truck the finish is perfect no scratches, swirls or oxidation that is why I haven't used a polish yet. For my Silverado's second birthday I will be treating it to a Clay Barring, an Ultimate Polish and an Ultimate Wax.

Not sure why it would have. Unless the paint wasn't washed just before using the bar and there was some dirt or sand or too much embedded contaminates in the paint and while claying the paint it built up on the clay bar and it scratched the paint. or not enough quick detailing lubricant was used or too much hand pressure was being used, So if there was enough contaminates on the bar it basically was like using sand paper on the paint.

Good morning. In some case you would need to use a compound if you have significate damage to the vehicles finish. like very noticeable swirl marks and or scratches and blemishes. You can use a polish if you notice small scratches or blemishes. I did use the Meguiars ULTIMATE POLISH a couple waxes before this one not that it was needed I had no surface scratches. because the finish of my truck was in such great shape I only needed to used the ULIMATE WAX... I just had another comment where someone said that using a clay bar on your vehicle in circular motions will scratch the finish, But a straight line won't.... To clear interior of vehicle vacuum car, apply carpet cleaning spray to fabric chair or carpet, and then use a drill brush to loosen dirt. Then use carpet spot cleaner to extract water and dirt to leave all carpet and fabric chairs clean. Use a toothbrush to loosen dust and dirt on car dashboard and then use a brush attachment on vacuum hose to suck up dust from car dashboard. You should use a steam cleaner to get sticky leftovers off plastic of door and cupholders. Use rubber pet hair brush to remove pet hair from carpet.

No it will not remove the clear coat, trust me I had a Pontiac Firebird for 23 years and the clear coat was perfect. Just be sure to prep the paint before using the Clay Bar. Rinse off all the loose dirt with a strong stream of water, be sure to wash it with a good amount of soap suds, you can even do a second wash if need be, you do not have to totally dry it. The most important part of using a Clay Bar is to make sure there is no loose particle sitting on the clearcoat. Be sure to use plenty of spray lube---do not use water as a lubricant--and use light pressure when using the Clay Bar. It's recommended to go back and forth, But I use both circle and back and forth motions. It's how I have always done it.

Using Straight or circlular motions, the clay bar is still in contact with the paints clear-coat. It will scratch the same. The trick is to use light non aggressive pressure and most importantly you need to pre-clean the surface thoroughly prior to using the clay bar. Plus a clean clay bar to. I use both circular and straight depending on where I'm at on the vehicle.

it squeeks because the stuff your spraying on has wax in it quick detail is just wax with water a poweder formed wax and your doing it wrong yoru pressing with your fingers and you can cut the bar in half and stick it in warm water to work it to a thin sheet you dont wanna use that thick sheet.. and they last long because overburden or fallout takes a while to accumlate ie tree sap etc you can also use soap and water as a lubricant.. wash off your clay bar too

I still prefer to use the quick detailer as a lubricant, I do however rinse the bar in clear water while using it, It may be squeaky before clay barring and waxing as you say, but after I do the AWESOME job I do it's as smooth as glass, and no swirl marks at all.

So I say to those people if you prep the surface correctly and it's clean it won't matter what direction you choose to use. I do all, it just depends where I'm at on the panel and stay away from sharp edges that's where the paint is at its thinnest.

It really doesn't matter. I do a mixture of both. It's just a preference. it will scratch no matter which method you use if your paint is not up par.. You just need to wash the paint as thoroughly as possible and keep the clay bar very clean. My vehicles paint is always clean so I never have any problems while using the clay bar. I wax my truck 3 times a year and clay it on it's anniversary.

I'm telling you it doesn't matter if you go in circular motions straight up and down back and forth or a triangle. I've been waxing my own vehicles and motorcycles for over forty years. I've never had any problems going in circular motions back and forth up and down and sideways it's all the same. it's all in the lubrication, you have to have enough of it. If you don't use enough lubrication then yes you will end up Scratching it. I had a 24 year old Firebird, bright red, and the day I sold, and it had 325,000 miles on the odometer it did not have a single swirl mark on it. So trust me when I say it doesn't matter what direction you clay bar or wax it, you can do it anyway you want,just make sure to use plenty of the Quick Detailer as a lubricant....

It's not a good idea to, the day I made this video it was a cool morning day when I started. I don't think it was above 70°. I can't remember. But You are right, it should not be done in direct hot sunlight. My finish was slightly warm to the touch by the end of filming... Only when I wash and wax it I do it first thing in the morning between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. usually takes me 2 hours to wash and wax maybe two and a half with a clay bar if I take my time.

Yes it was sunny and yes you should not do it in direct sunlight. It was cool that day it was not hot. the lighting was great for filming outside. it doesn't really matter if you go in circles or go back and forth, like I said in all the other comments I replied to: it's going to scratch whether you do it in circles or back and forth you have to prep the finish correctly. I even called Maguire's and they do recommend in circles that way if you scratch it it will be in circles and not a scratch line, he did say it's whatever your preferences. I do a little bit of each depends on where I'm at on the vehicle. Check out one of my newer videos that has my new truck in it she's going to be 3 years old this August. I used a clay bar two to three times on the first year and then every year on it's anniversary date I wash it at least twice a month and spray Wax it once a month usually on the last wash of the month. And the finish on this truck is unbelievable not a scratch on it. But technically it should be done back and forth motions.

Paul Henderson the point of not going in a circular motion is because light reflex off of the clear coat and it’s easier to see the swirls when it’s a small circles everywhere. But drying and claying in one direction doesn’t cause many micro scratches in a cross hatch pattern. I hand dry my car using a one direction motion only per panel, and swirls are very minimal, same goes with claying. Usually claying doesn’t really matter since the car will need a compound and or polish after words, but if someone accidentally get a small rock between the clay and the car, small circles would be a lot more damage

@@IntegraDIYthe proper prep work is the key to not scratching the finish, that's why People have to be careful with anything they do on the finish like using a quick detailer spray, or a California duster or even washing it to. Because debris that is stuck on the lower portion of the vehicle and get transferred to the mitt and scratch as they are washing the area next to where it was picked up from. They need to be diligent with rinsing the mitt constantly. That's why the car has to be washed very well and when it comes time to clay bar and use plenty of lubrication and to also constantly rinse the Clay bar off in a clean bucket and inspect the bar before moving on.. I had a 23 year old firebird with 325,000 miles and not a single swirl or scratch mark in it. I know it's hard to believe but it's true...so I must be doing something right. I clay bar in all directions, it depends where I'm at on the vehicle..

Im sure I never will in the future either...most people don't understand how compounds work. They are very abrasive ,they remove a thin layer of the clear coat to get rid of the micro scratches and if you have a deeper scratch and try to use the compound on that you'll remove even more clear coat. So to me thinning your clearcoat to get rid of scratches isn't a good idea. Doing the prep work correctly would be a much smarter thing to do... So no I don't and will never use a compound.

This is what he said: it's whatever the person using the clay bar prefers to use, it's just a matter of reference. So I said this to him: Doing circles, straight lines, diagonals, triangles, squares, up and down, back and forth, it really doesn't matter. It'll scratch the finish if the vehicle is not cleaned thoroughly, and he said (CORRECT). But it is recommend doing a left and right motion. Probably to cover their butt. That is why you need to prep the paint correctly. The reason why they say to do it in lines is so if you scratch it you'll have a scratch line that will not be as noticeable as a circular pattern. So this is what it won't get scratched if you're sure the paint is clean and there is no sand or grit in the clay bar. My new truck is almost 3 years old and there isn't one single scratch in the paint and when I clay bar my truck I do circles, back and forths, up and down it all depends upon where I'm at on the surface. So the bottom line is the most important thing is prep the vehicle and make sure it's totally free of all dust, dirt, and grime. Awesome vehicles that sounds like 15 years old dog I learned how to do it on my mom's 78 Trans Am my brother taught me everything he knew about detailing vehicles, but I'm way better than he ever was and ever would be at claying and waxing vehicles. Do you do all this in direct sun.Also Meguiars recommend clay bar use in straight line motion and not circular.Amateur.

First of all, yes the sun was out, it was overcast when I stsrted and it wasn't hot at all... Second... it doesn't matter if it's done in a straight line or circular motion or diagonally..I prefer doing it the circular way ..I've been detailing all my autos since 1983, and as you can see my 2006 truck looks AWESOME. I think in this video it was 12 years old....
