Owning a gun didn't cross my mind until I joined and then left the Police. I would say I was struck with the same kind of apathy Sam talks about prior to joining. The Police are ALWAYS going to be 5-15 minutes away (if they come at all). I did 3 years before I became frustrated and left. About a 9:1 Shit Cop / Good Cop ratio. I would say it gave me the confidence to do exactly what Sam is talking about at 9:00, which actually becomes quite addictive. If you want a fun gap 1-3 years I highly recommend joining.

I don’t have any real knowledge about what cops do internally among each other but I’ve always assumed that cops have quotas that they have to meet of fines, arrests or reports that they have to make within a week in order to justify their own existence to the public. It would explain why a lot of cops don’t give a shit when something real happens because they’ve already filled their quota for the week on insignificant bullshit.

But, even though they ought not be actual crimes (meriting physical punishment), they are suspicious, and someone should intervene to make sure things are safe. Involving a cop is tricky though, cuz some of them (clearly not the ones Hyde encountered :p) might feel compelled to enforce those bad laws, rather than use the more appropriate softer touch of inquiry or shaming.
