Beckham spoke for Unicef, but do we know if he was paid for that, or was it true charity for a cause? Either way, it's your follow through that counts on these things, Beckham is sorely lacking in this area with Qatar. Many great althletes sacrfice to transcend sport and become leaders in other worldly endeavors (Ali, Abdul-Jabbar, Colin Kaepernick, Pat Tillman, Jesse Owens, Tommie Smith, John Carlos, Jackie Robinson). Sorry, being Canadian, my references for this category is mainly American, but I think you can add somebody like Marcus Rashford trying to make a difference in child poverty and I'm sure there are a good amount of older examples of British and European athletes who can be listed.

Prior to the Newcastle takeover and during the whole process in the deal going through, there was this sudden bandwagon of human rights. Now Qatar and going forward, one country or another... First of all, people need to research and see who put these people in power in these countries we are talking about. Secondly, don't despise Beckham for what he's done. There are many other people who would do the same or are doing the same (behind closed doors) Thirdly, why only talk about human rights? What about selling arms to certain countries? Starting wars, destabilising and overthrowing governments with lies in impoverished regions for oil? Let's be honest here and talk like grown ups! Money matters to almost everyone. There are many atrocities being committed around the world, but I don't ever hear a word on those from most public figures. However, I agree that England should have been selected to host the World cup before Russia and Qatar. Even with 2026, there was talk of USA, CANADA and MEXICO putting in a joint-bid. How can they get another world cup?, as USA and MEXICO have hosted it twice before already.

Well said Simon. 4000 slaves died building the stadia nevermind how they treat Women and LGBT there. Absolute shame on Beckham to willingly be used to legitimize all that has gone on. Tournament shouldn't even be going ahead after all those deaths. People unwilling to critisize Beckham are the same ones who are happy to turn a blind eye to the deaths and slavery due to their selfish hunger to enjoy a world cup and be entertained. The whole thing is the opposite of what football is about and world cups. Sickness of greed and politics and a lack of decency, strength and morality from the national football governing bodies to stand up and not participate.
