@sleepykoinu10 ай бұрын
Yeah like does this allegory not imply that irl minorities are dangerous monsters only kept at bay by technology/drugs..? Like the people in universe have a good reason to fear literal zombies who would kill them if the watch ever malfunctioned or ran out of battery. It'd make more sense if it was only propaganda if you want to match real life.
@fangirlstampede3065 Жыл бұрын
I think the backstory really muddies the whole “race allegory” this movie is going for, because it makes the situation far more complicated. I mean, the zombies apparently killed and ate people, and the only thing stopping them from doing it again is an electronic band. I’m pretty sure that’s a scary situation for everyone, both zombie and human, and it makes a conflict resolution way more difficult than I think this movie can manage. As an alternative, they could’ve made zombies just rise out of the ground one day. They don’t kill anyone, they’re just a medical anomaly where the dead are reanimating. But give the humans a lot of false preconceptions about zombie culture based off of legends and their depictions in media. This could not only do the race allegory better, but also show how racist depictions in media can affect how people view a certain race.
@emilylike-the-soup2502 Жыл бұрын
That would be much better messaging! Although, how would that mesh with the high school setting? Did Zed die as a teenager? Do zombies age, or is Addison going to grow up while he stays a teen forever?

Exactly. One of the things that racist people in the real world do is give the "its in their nature" argument. which has constantly been proven to be false. The issue with this movie is that it *literally is* in their nature to be violent. Completely destroying the race analogy. Zootopia had this same problem.
@drawingdragon Жыл бұрын
@Frying Panda Um.... no? The entire point of Zootopia was that it _wasn't_ in their nature, but false preconceptions caused everyone to _assume_ the bad things happening were because of their nature. That's... that's the point of the movie.

I’m really glad Danny highlighted how the racism analogy fundamentally does not work. The same issue applies to most racism allegories in fiction because the stand in for minorities is always mutants, aliens, etc, but that comparison will always fall short because in the real world minorities literally have zero differences beyond superficial aesthetics. Even if the zombies never ate people the allegory still doesn’t work because they are still on some level physiologically different to humans in a way ie black people to white people aren’t
@horrordyke Жыл бұрын
It's similar to why zootopia doesn't work, both zombies and predators were a threat + have the opportunity to continue to be a threat, the prey/humans have genuine reasons to be afraid of them, racism doesn't work like that idk why directors are convinced it makes sense

@@horrordyke to me the way I make sense of it is that with kids movies, as is what most of these movies are, Racism is a very heavy topic and while it is important to teach kids about these issues you need to do it in a way that won't traumatize them, like there's a reason movies like the OG Disney's Pinoccho aren't being made anymore and it's also easier to explain to kids who is who by giving each side defining characteristics that set them apart, there are definitely better ways to do this than Z-O-M-B-I-E-S or any other movie who use genuinely dangerous characters as the oppressed people but there's also a fine line between explaining heavy topics and getting sued this movie still sucks but that's just my opinion on the matter, I'm an internet stranger with too much time on my hands.

i just came here to say exactly this, youre so right
@lauracerqueiramachado8979 Жыл бұрын
Yes but the zombies actually like the Z-Bands because it helps them and has many uses, I remember watching a video of Milo and Meg rehearsing the script and there were lines saying that the Z-band can also play music and in the movie later Zed says that they got an upgrade and now had Wi-Fi, in Zootopia the predators hated those shock collars and only wore them because they had to in order to be accepted and live there because it kept them from attacking someone but it also wouldn’t let them have strong feelings such as excitement and joy
@epic6435 Жыл бұрын
ya but zootopias also bad rep of racism bc the minority r literally predatory animals 💀
@AllyGatorAnimator Жыл бұрын
@@lauracerqueiramachado8979 Also, to add to that, Zootopia had the collars be a tool to stop a perceived threat based on prejudice, with many prey not even knowing (or caring) just how badly it affected the predators because they were so set in their incorrect belief that predators were predisposed to aggression. It's a genuinely interesting depiction of how fear can cause people to unfairly judge and oppress others. In Z-O-M-B-I-E-S it doesn't really work as an oppression allegory because, as you said, the zombies like the bands, but also they are a legitimate threat if the bands stop working. It makes the "don't call people monsters for being different" message kind of fall flat when the oppressed group will go into an uncontrollable murderous rage if they don't wear a band. It would be like if in Zootopia they had the predators actually go savage when the collar came off. It's just such a weird decision.
@cyndrift Жыл бұрын
@@AllyGatorAnimator yes exactly. it feels like they thought of the premise and thought of an interesting conflict and either the broad strokes were never revised or it just did not click for them how those two things together basically justify racism in your racism allegory. not to mention having your stand in for black people have barely-controlled rage issues programmed into their DNA that they use only to prey upon the majority group? fucking yikes. were there no black people in the writers room at disney, or like a sensitivity reader, or anyone with even a basic understanding of anti-black racism?? that shit would absolutely not fly nowadays. the fact this was made and scrapped-zootopia wasnt (even if the budget and culture at the time are obviously why) is lowkey upsetting

I honestly think it’s funny how Danny switches between: “zombies are just people with green hair” And “zombies are vicious monsters, who will eat people’s pets, and babies” Edit: plus how both statements are technically correct

I remember watching a video about this movie a few years ago and ever since then I’ll randomly wonder why they didn’t make Addison’s natural hair color green even though she’s human. It feels like it would be a bigger reason for her to feel the need to cover it up.

What sucks is that the zombie's struggle could have been really interesting. Creatures that are too dangerous to have full human rights have sentience forced upon them is a much more interesting angle to explore than a horrible allegory for irl racism
