Some clarification for anyone worried about UV lights: This was not caused by standard stage lighting. The bored ape event in Hong Kong was using non-coated mercury vapor lamps, a special type of light only used in industrial and scientific equipment. Regular 'Black Light' fixtures use a mercury vapor tube that comes from the factory with a coating that only passes deep blue and near ultraviolet light, which is safe to view. Bare mercury vapor lamps emit a small amount of visible cyan glow and a large amount of deep ultraviolet, which is invisible to the eye but very harmful to tissue. I do not have any information about the production of this event, but I doubt that they were supplied by a reputable production company. In my experience as a lighting and laser tech in the US, it would be nearly impossible for this to happen at a professional production here. I don't have any experience in Hong Kong, but industry standards there appear very different.

The lights were in a small "art" room at the event that looked like a decorated restroom. Several photos show the UV-C lamps turned on in the room which is actually horrifying. It wasn't just one, the whole room was illuminated by them, and they don't give off much visible light.

Having lived in Hong Kong for most of my life I find it incredibly funny and ironic that the Ape event took place at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. It cost billions of dollars of taxpayer money, replaced one of the most iconic airports in the world (at least for aviation geeks) and not once have I ever seen a single cruise ever anchor there. Everyone in Hong Kong knows its a scam and knows how badly the government fucked up with it. Oh, and they're now building a monorail on it. Truly a fitting zoo for bored apes.

I mean the eye damage is only a small part of the problem. Long term exposure to unfiltered UV light is linked to skin cancer.... it's the reason you're told to wear sunscreen because while the atmosphere does protect you from some of the UV light it does not protect you from all of it. It's the reason why tanning beds are so dangerous. This was completely moronic and, in my opinion, criminally negligent but I highly doubt they will be held accountable or even liable.

Holy-moly! You can see on the video of the stage that they used some brutally powerful blacklight! Normally you shouldn't be able to see it, but you can clearly see the beams! I read somewhere that the organizers wanted to be extra fancy and didn't use normal UV lamps made for stages and such, but super expensive industrial grade lamps. The ones used for sterilizing stuff. Tricky stuff 'cause it is invisible but causes the same kind of eye damage as any powerful light source.

i've had photokeratitis (welder's flash). the most painful thing i've experienced, worse than broken bones imo, though my case was pretty severe. feels like the insides of your eyelids are like sandpaper, any and all eye movements are horribly painful. i can point at myself and laugh about it, but really only have sympathy for others
@SpiceIntolerance10 ай бұрын
I remember my boss describing it just like that when I started my apprenticeship and that the only way he could sleep was by getting so drunk he passed out lol. It definitely scared me into sticking to the H+S rules though because even after my 14 years of welding I’ve luckily never experienced it! 🤞🏼

I worked in a fireplace factory setting up parts for wire welders. The arc flash from 8 hours of exposure was incredibly painful and required about 2 hours a night with a wet cloth over the eyes.
@pickelsvx10 ай бұрын
In college, our welding instructor taught us all a lesson about welders flash by stepping out of the way after the speel as the other instructor struck an arc behind him. Afterwards we were issued our helmets. 1/10 would not recommend looking at the very pretty bluish-white light.

Apparently most of the lights there was LED lights but for some reason they decided to use clear mercury vapor fluorescent light that produce UV C in the toilet showplace(It is just two toilets and some other props) .The thing is that venue had this accident before and they literally decided to reuse the props despite knowing it had something wrong with them. This is blatant disregard of the human health rather than ignorance or a mistake. How expensive is to buy a proper normal flouracent light with uv filter could be? They should get sued.

Not to make light of the situation, but this is reminding me of that scene from Invader Zim where the aliens use lasers as part of their light show and they keep getting hit in the eyes. Just because it looks cool doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I had this happen to me when someone in my advanced metallurgy and welding class didn’t call welding while I was setting up for a lab. Welding will cause this in seconds. I didn’t get blindness as the moment I heard the crackling of the arc, I shut my eyes. But the pain, bright spots, and feeling of sand in my eyes was not fun. At least we were warned what could happen without ppe. Our professor was in his 80s and told of times it had happen to him. He was pretty cool. He was one of the welders who build the original space shuttle.

My dad used those same lamps to decontaminate our bathroom when some of our household members got COVID. Every time we used the bathroom, whether it was taking a shower or a shit, we had to turn the lights off, because we knew it'd fuck us up majorly if we didn't. The bathroom was always incredibly warm, you could smell the paint degrading, and the towels became... crunchy. I can't imagine going to a convention and not immediately noticing that something's wrong with those kinds of lights being used. Like, holy hell.

There was a massive increase in UV light production back during the quarantine for disinfection purposes. Now less companies want to spend the money on them so they widely available for cheap. So yeah. Someone just saw a cheaper alternative and assumed that a light is a light.
