Nice save on the sheepie. I got out to the beach in Tampa yesterday & got the season's first pomp. He bit on 'fish bites" with a piece of shrimp. It was 14" at the fork & then he was delicious on the fork.

I hope you remembered to tell the pompano to come north to Cape San Blas. I'll be expecting them from May 15-22nd. They sure are delicious aren't they?

Jacks fun to catch, one of toughest fish for their size. Agree they are not good to eat. Caught one about the same size as yours on a bait caster for bass and took a long time to land. Seeing a feeding blitz where an acre of water erupts in fish is unforgettable.

What size of rod do you recommend for throwing from the pier? I have a couple of 7ft medium heavy rods paired with some vanford 3000’s I picked up that I throw some spoons with from the beach. I don’t really know if those are appropriate for the pier. My other options are 2 Pen battle 5000’s with a much stiffer rod but they don’t throw spoons as well. I’m still learning this new area of fishing. Any advice would be great. Would love to meet up with you one day. My in laws have a condo in Perdido Key. Last week I caught 8 pompano in 3 days of fishing . It was a great week! Please respond with any tips!

The Gulf State park pier is a bomb. We I use to catch trout, croaker, blue fish, shark, stingray. I mean like a lot of different types of fish there. Sadly the pier was closed and I couldn't go fishing there. Plus I live in Texas so it's about a 10 hour drive, but now that's it's open and seeing Bama Beach catching some decent fish, I might go back there this summer.

The last time we were on that pier, there were pelicans everywhere at all the sinks and cleaning tables waiting to be fed handouts. I don’t know if those facilities were built back from the hurricane, but those pelicans were very tame and posed with my wife up close.
