Think you’re doomed to whatever “runs in your family”?
THINK AGAIN. As it turns out, your genes do NOT determine your fate.
My guest and I agree that with the proper knowledge, you can live a long, healthy life - no matter your genetic predispositions.
On this episode, I welcome back Kashif Khan, the founder of The DNA company - a company helping thousands decode their genes to optimize their health. Kashif and I share how nutrition, lifestyle and environmental decisions impact our genetic function - and do a deep dive into MY DNA test results!
In this episode you’ll learn:
- Why your genes are NOT your destiny (and how you can turn anxiety and depression into a superpower)
- The shocking results of my “genetic x-ray”
- How heat can actually affect your mood (and the heat-hack for supporting brain function)
- Micronutrients that can actually become toxic (and why you may not be absorbing nutrients from vitamins)
- One of the BEST little-known tips for supporting sleep
- Why 49% of people do not have a gut detox system, including ME (and what it may indicate about my health)
- Why MOST people over the age of 50 don’t make this energy enzyme anymore (and what to do about it)
- How to manage your “gene expression” to optimize your health and add years to your life
This episode is sponsored by The DNA Company but Dr. Gundry’s opinions are his own.

Please, Dr. Gundry, turn on the "translation" function in the subtitles in the channel settings. I live in Russia and am very fond of your concept in dietology, but due to poor knowledge of English (many in the post-Soviet space suffer from this, the quality of education leaves much to be desired) I cannot get acquainted with your work personally. Forced to use third-party sources, and they can distort information, or where there is text - Google translator. Thanks in advance

Polyphenols and certain amino acids like Tyrosine and Phenylalanine inhibit the COMT catechol methyltransferase enzyme hindering the clearance of catecholamines like dopamine epinephrine and norepinephrine in the brain subsequently causing anxiety and is implicated in psychotic disorders like schizophrenia whereas magnesium and vitamin C SAMe and folate increase COMT activity

Here you are, "The Doctor Plant Guy," as I say to my friends (I'm terrible with names), but Dr Kahn is saying your genetic predisposition is for "Paleo" with lots of lean meats. I laughed when I heard that; especially after you gave some warnings about some sort of "sugar" in "red meats" (like beef) in a recent pod-cast.

i think you literally fix bad genes by working hard and pushing yourself/conquering your mind however you decide you want to be great. Theres some things that can''t be fixed like that but there are some that could. Like being a bad organizer, or being a good welder or something/craftsmen/ball player. Anything your predisposed to being terrible at doing, you can practice and become good at it, and then not stopping there and becoming overly great at it. That work has got to alter your DNA that will then be passed down. I'm no scientist but i've seen real life examples of doing just that working. I mean when you think of any person who is great for a certain reason and they gain much notoriety then have offspring which grows as being someone who people see as being in the shadow of that notable person but an extension of that notable persons potential that has been passed down; the offspring will likely have those built in strengths and talents to start to do a lot what the notable person did earlier with the notable persons guidance, and due to learning it sooner, can surpass the notable person at doing that certain thing due to having more time with more knowledge the notable person didn't have early on and only got over time.

There is some truth to what you are saying. The only thing I will add is in some things people are just not wired or designed to be good enough at. Everyone can't be a professional athlete no matter how hard they try, practice or put their mind to. I saw that in starting a business. Like you said I put everything into it and overcame a number of technical weaknesses. The cost however almost killed me because what I was trying to do, I basically was not wired genetically to do. So, I literally developed high blood pressure and heart disease because of the strain of making it successful. I even became suicidal at one time. I did become relatively successful, but the cost was great. The reason I am saying this is, understanding these factors genetically is not limiting, but it may mean partnering with people who have skillsets that you are not designed to be good at. There is more than one way to skin a cat, but the cat can't get skinned optimally without the right information as in this case genetically.

What you're describing sounds more like Practice Makes Improvement. Just doing and knowing something with great interest leads to being well versed in that topic. You practice the skill and gain more knowledge and become proficient. If a child does well in what their parent's did well in, it's bc they showed great interest (possibly bc they wanted to share something with their parent and grow a bond through that topic) and were very receptive to the knowledge that the parent accumulated so they skipped pass many of the parts that would've be difficult and time consuming to learn on their own. That's nothing to do with your genetic make-up.
