There was a worker at my dads job who got his head crushed by a forklift. Initially, due to shock and a belief he was dead no one took any action, it was almost 10 minutes before anyone even fetched my dad from his office. The mans brains were spilling out and skull was hanging all over the place. My dad called an ambulance and wrapped his head in a jacket to hold his brains in until the ambulance arrived and started cpr on the man who’s coworkers had assumed was a goner.The guy lived, he was severely impaired for several years but apparently one day some brilliant doctor came by took a look at him and said “I can fix that” through a combination of brain surgery, physical therapy and a few alternative medical practices he managed to kinda put the guy back together and he is now able to support his family again. Dad always told us that story growing up to show that there really is no limit to what people can overcome with enough support and belief from people and to never give up on anyone in pain

Phineas Gage's injury is actually tons more interesting than just the sheer miracle of him surviving. Everything is up to debate since the sources about his behavioural changes are very muddy and even the areas of his brain that were affected are still debated to this day! His case is one that respected members of the neuroscience/neurology community still fight over.

I actually own the penultimate work about Phineas Gage, and he didn't necessarily put his head OVER the hole, it is believed the hole was at an angle. Its worth noting that, immediately after the accident, Gage sat up in a wagon and finished making the notes for the day (he was actually the secondary boss on the site).

I’d read about another one where a guy fell onto exposed rebar iirc on a construction job. Went through from hip to neck diagonally. Somehow just bypassed every single organ and artery. They basically just pulled it out, gave him some antibiotics and closed the holes and guy was completely fine. I’m sure there was a recovery period but that nothing vital was damaged. I cannot imagine how that happened, the doctors couldn’t either. I forget what country it was to try to find it, this was some years back but I saw the X-ray. Literally just throughout his body. The fact the on site guys cut him free from where he was impailed and was able to transferred to the hospital with it never killing or particularly injuring him, that’s insane.

Phineas Gage’s story is actually really interesting. We learned about him in my psychology class. He’s one of our earliest recorded pieces of evidence for localisation of brain function (certain sections of your brain perform different functions). Gage’s erratic behaviour is probably due to a damaged prefrontal cortex because that is what stops us from acting on pure impulse/instinct. It’s also most likely that Gage died from a fungal infection in his “headhole” than from the actual injury because doctors would often visit him and stick a finger into each hole and (for lack of a better word) twiddle them in the middle (the horrible hygiene of that time is probably what introduced the infection in the first place)
