Basking in the hot southern countryside of France, an imposing golden castle stands tall above the rolling green hills.
Not only steeped in history, it holds secrets that set it apart from the rest…
For over 900 years the same family has held this land, they first constructed here in 1133, and upon these original foundations was this grand chateau built in 1740.
You are greeted by a vast marble entrance hall with doorways leading off in every direction, as we look up, we can still see its hunting heritage, trophies from centuries of shooting parties peer down from the walls.
This was a popular hunting lodge for the rich, due to its location and vast size.
After the hunt the guests would be invited to the grand dinning hall for a feast.
The 18th century dinning table remains here to this day, along with some unusual decorations.
There would’ve often been magnificent parties and events, the family enjoyed entertaining friends, which leads us to the 18th century theatre, decorated in 1740’s style, complete with a golden sun. This is one of the only chateaux with this unique feature.
As we move through the dimly lit rooms, you begin to smell the library before you find it, home to many thousands of antique books, collected over its 280 years.
A total of 25 bedrooms and six bathrooms are spread across its 5 stories.
Each one decorated in a unique style.
Although one stands out from the rest, this exquisite 1800s wallpaper was specially created for this chamber, this one is so unique as it was once showcased at New Yorks Museum of Art before being returned here.
All of the paintings seen throughout were also specially commissioned to depict life at the chateau.
We venture up into the top levels of the house and into the attic, where we find the medicine room, and an office with more clues about the previous owners life.
Down beneath the castle, we move through subterranean passages leading to lofty vaulted rooms, still filled with resources.
Priced at 12 million some years ago but it’s perhaps not fit for modern day use and may sadly remain at risk for the foreseeable future,
Join us as we step inside and unravel all of its secrets.

Contact a local historian, this needs to be restored and turned into a museum, I, personally, would love to be able to see it in person, I’m sure I’m not alone on that. I’m just fascinated. That necklace that was on a plaque, looked like an artifact. I’m completely in awe! Literally my jaw has been on the floor since the beginning of this video! I can’t thank you enough for sharing ❤🙏

Can't remember the name of the show, But on BBC. An expert comes in to try and help the owners rescue the castles by renovating and renting them out as wedding venues, inns, etc. If the buildings are truly abandoned, it seems odd that the furnishings couldn't be removed and resold, perhaps by certified antique dealers. Not sure why this isn't done.

@@staceykersting705 I'm sure someone somewhere still actually OWNS it, even if they aren't living in it and the most personal belongings are gone. You can't just go in and take what isn't yours. There's a saying - take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints.

@@staceykersting705 I'm ... not? I think you better read my comment again. I was trying to discourage it. Goodness! They absolutely should be preserved. The best bet would be to attempt to track down any remaining family members. If that can't be done, then sadly there's nothing to do for it but leave them there to decay.

You are correct most if not all are sitting in an auction book if in this condition .the house was owned by someone and it’s not very often they have no family .And if they dnt have family they own the land .When you buy a house you never own the land .And this is the reason so the gov can come along and restore or demolish and rebuild .pre 1980 they wld just rot away.

Those tiny secret doors you're finding in the bedrooms are for the maids to sneak in and make the bed without disturbing the whole room. Often those doors are not in the main hall and keeps servants from roaming through the main hallway. Also, those long ribbons on the wall are bell pulls to call the servents.

Hmmm, 2 years ago I purchased a 5 acre house with a tiny " room/ space" , under the steps, which goes to the other side, which at one time was a sunroom which we've turned into one hell of a nice bedroom. Did I mention the house was built in 1864. You can definitely see the add on's over the year. But I like to think, im bringing it back to a happier time and making it pretty again. Right, if your house is happy......

I was excited and very surprised watching this video. I saw this chateau for sale online not more then 2 years ago. They wanted over 15 million dollars for it. The sale pics were beautiful but they obviously only showed the rooms in good condition. I would never have guessed it was in such a state of decay. It will take millions to fully restore. I hope someone with deep pockets purchases the chateau and saves such an amazing treasure.

That was amazing. I counted 29 bedrooms and 10 locked rooms, some of which could also be bedrooms. Having watch a few abandoned places now, it never ceases to amaze me about the amount of stuff leaf behind! Such a lot of waste of what was once nice and now antique! This video is one of the best I've seen. Thank you for showing it.

Just so you know : the little plainer rooms adjoining the more decorated ones, with a little bed would be (originally) the lady's maid room or personnal valet room. The boxes hanging beside de fireplace: long matches box. The double headed eagle (on the big cabinet in the big hall) is the emblem of the Hapsburg dynasty. Maybe they were somehow related. Very cool video. Breaks my heart to see such a place going to waste.

Not sure if it registered with you guys but that one newspaper you were looking at dated August 1939 would have been printed right before the outbreak of WW2. This chateau was truly phenomenal, it amazes me how there can be so many treasures that span such a long period of history and so many of them looked like they could have been a part of someone's daily life. I really wonder about the decline of the place before the abandonment. Great video.

I've been watching your videos sort of backwards and I have to say, out of the 7-8 urban explorers I've watched consistently, I've enjoyed yours the most. You keep the music relevant, no rock bands, no rap music, just plain and quiet classical to match the French areas you are exploring. Then you don't yell and then say things you don't understand or don't know. I enjoy that you take time to focus on the photographs of who lived there, paintings, furniture etc. I also enjoy how you explain what the rooms feel like to you and you make comparisons to the way of life now. You appreciate the fine architecture, wallpaper and paintings. You go into each and every room to where it makes sense to the viewer what the layout is like when you walk in. Thank you for that.

This is a magnificent chateau. It's like a museum. The bedroom that Jessie liked was done in the Napoleonic style. I think the scenic wallpaper was hand blocked and printed by a company called Zuber which is still in business today. At room 1:28:00 is not a "medicine room". The very first box shown is one of a Kodak developing compound and the numerous bottles of chemical compounds are all photographic related and for the mixing of the chemistry required for developing film and the making of prints in the adjacent darkroom. Some of the bottles are also labelled in French "revelateur nuef", "revelateur vieux" to distinguish between freshly mixed developer and developer that is still usable but may have been used to process film a couple of times.

Hello. Lovely. Thanks so much. The ceramics and glass in the chateau are old, some are very old. I cannot imagine what the family may have removed. With the roof leaks, this chateau is in slight danger. However, unattended, those leaks are guaranteed to become very serious. Ten years will be enough to threaten the existence of the entire building. They need to be attended to immediately, while the cost of repairs will be relatively reasonable. The faceted stove in the laundry was used for heating irons,, one one each side. The house appears to have been redecorated in several waves. The carved wooden paneling - generally called boiserie - represents the earliest period of the interior design visible. There seems to have been a major interior redecoration in the early 1800s, perhaps 1830-1840, judging from the early surviving wallpapers. This would include the dramatic scenic wallpaper. Note how the overmantle and over door painted decorations match the earlier decorative scheme, not that from the end of the 1800s. Finally, the darker, more moody and romantic wallcoverings appear to date from the end of the 1800s. Most appear to be restorable. In several rooms, the wall coverings and the vast curtains match, so the walls and curtains visually bleed together. If I were tackling this house, I'd conserve both, but I would add borders to the wall coverings to give them scale and form, so, for example, you are not simply looking at acres of paisley curls. A dado or chair rail around the rooms would also help with the scale. For the curtains, I'd add gimp and fringe in contrasting colors so that the folds and drapes of the fabric had greater definition. The wallpapers themselves are very interesting. Most appear to be the late 1800s. The paper on the walls of the third floor study is really interesting, and may be mid-1800s. In the room where the fabric wall covering was lifted, the glimpse of the wall treatment underneath looked to be wallpaper from the early years of the 1800s, perhaps 1830-1840. The spectacular room with the painted walls is actually wallpapered with an early 1800s 'scenic' wallpaper. The design appears to be from the period 1820-1840, and possibly printed on handmade paper by Zuber or one of their competitors. These papers, in their original locations, have become very rare. It should be preserved 'in situ' at all costs. One quick note. Your tours may be the only modern record these buildings receive. When it is possible, could you try to record the rooms architecturally, like a room portrait, say from a doorway, or opposite a fireplace. I know some rooms are simply too small for any type of general shot. However, paneling and fireplaces are commonly stolen for the antiques market - a friend has assured me that these thieves will be reincarnated as carpenter ants - little compensation for current architectural preservation - so your photographs could become a very important record to try to recover stolen artifacts for restoration. Also, when possible, do not forget to carefully record fabrics, wallpapers and ceilings. Again, this may be the last we will ever see of these buildings and homes. Again, lovely tour. Thanks so very much.

What a great find, loved this so much. Those tiny rooms above the bed were play areas for children. This is a beautiful place and I’m so grateful for you taking us with you on this explore. You need to come to Australia, some temperatures go up to 45 to 50 degrees in the summer in some parts. Those little covers were to put over the tea pot to keep them warm. The little door next to the bed was so the husband could come and have his way with his wife in dignity. They use to sleep apart in those days and were discreet when it came to marital life. The black room was probably used to develop their own photos. Much love from Australia

Your best place yet, absolutely extraordinary. (I don't think the French hunter Aardvark though Jess, lol) The little stubby chair things in some of the bedrooms are prayer kneelers where you would kneel to say your bedtime prayers. The library was a joy and I loved the upstairs workshop. As a simple french citizen still living in France, I tell to whom wants to hear....please purchase our thousands of castles that are falling in ruins! Common french people and business men in France don't have the money to maintain them, so they are just abandoned to robber, rain and time. I'm so sad for my lovely country and all his rich culture, that we are not able to stand on the world business nowadays, and despite all our ressources and assets we aren't able to create a ministry of patrimony to maintain and save it... so I have to swallow my pride and ask to Anglo-Saxon to help us saving these architectural treasures by purchasing them and maintain them instead of us. If I was a billionaire, I would do my best to save as many castles, mansions and churches as possible!

I get the sense that Jess is most attracted to photographs of the prior inhabitants, which I suppose gives it all more context. But now I really want to visit it myself just to spend a day in that library!

I watched this when y’all first posted it but I did a search and I saw it so had to see this chateau one more time bc it is unbelievable!!!! I would give anything to have a place like that - so much history. My parents lived in an apartment when they first had me and we lived in 3 other houses - the last one built in 1979 - a whole 44 years old and these people lived on this property for 900???!!! It’s crazy when you think about it. It would be nice to know your family history going back so far and for so many family members to live together like they used to in these big mansions. Great explore - loved it 2nd time too! Thanks.

Don't know why I'm asking this because I have NEVER seen you respond to any comment from any of your followers but here it goes. That bedroom with wedding photos and the bed with the blue floral print, wad that a child's room as the bed seem really low to the ground? I LOVE watching your videos as well as Dave and Mark from AWE, Adam Mark, Jef Stetics. You all have the same enthusiasm, care, love, and most importantly RESPECT for the properties and families of the properties that you explore and the respect is what keeps me watching all of you.STAY SAFE ALWAYS! MUCH LOVE FROM OERGON USA 🇺🇸 😊 ❤

Wow, how could the owner even keep track of the rooms without a map, I suspect many rooms didn't get a visitor for years 🤔 I would love to go back in time a 100 years and see it full of life, and how many people roamed it's halls.

Loved the video. The Chateau is amazing. I searched for more information and found that it was renovated or restored and put on the market in 2017. I couldn't find any ore information or pictures of it after that but my main reason for searching was to find out if this very beautiful mansion had been adopted and cared for.

What a find. Great explore. Thank you, guys for sticking with it and seeing it through. When I am a multi-Billionaire, I will go round to pick that place up. Couple of things I did notice. On those shelf Jess liked so much with the medicines. There was a brown box that said, and my translation is ruff, but it said something about 50 Cartridges and Below that it said Calibur 12. So, I wonder if they were 12-gauge shotgun shells. Next to it there was a box of white 3-inch cylinders that I think the label said candles. But the labels were in German, and my German is worse than my French. Lastly, in that upstairs study on the back of the door leading in, above the Coats of Arms, there was a certificate that said Medal of Honor for, and the last word looked like Travel. That might go along with all the Pilot stuff. But once again, great job, great explore.

This was the absolute BEST Video I have seen on KZbin of an explore of a true ancient Chateau! I really wish that you had the history of this magnificent place. I saw traces of objects from various Countries in there. Touches of India, Belgium, Africa, and a few other places. I was horrified when I saw the black mold, and wondered if you two felt ok afterward because you did not have on face masks, head coverings, or gloves and went about touching stuff. If you both say you are fine and that you will remember to carry those items for next time, I will breathe easier. BIG HUGS for this Magnificent EXPLORE! 🤗🌞🌴

Didn’t think you could top the château you visited before this one but you have! This place is beautiful! Unique that it contains a theater. One of my favorite rooms. Other favorites were the bedrooms with beautiful beds, chairs matching fabric on walls. The library, well I could go on! I really love that you show us what’s inside cupboards, see photos and small trinkets and treasures. Thanks for taking your time and enduring the heat for us! I have an idea of who’s home this was. It was for sale but don’t know if sold. The tapestries were said to be worth quite a bit. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were auctioned off. I believe the last of the family line purposely wanted to sell the home and land with contents for historical value. Anyway, I can’t get enough of your videos. Keep up the fantastic work. Be safe and travel well.

There is nothing "untouched" in this Chateau. And it is hard to say "everything is left behind". Half of the furniture has been stolen in the past year. Almost all gobelins and chandeliers are gone. Look for older videos of 2019. Back then it was really a time capsule, but not in 2022.

@@N0N4M30 I can only link my own video which is a sampler of sorts. There you can see some pieces of this chateau, but also many other chateaux that deserve more of the superlative "untouched" (but I won't use it because nothing is really untouched). For example, the video shows a second visit to the library in this castle and already in 2019 there were empty rows on the shelves. Two months earlier everything was intact. But there are still all the clocks on the mantels, candlesticks, all the tapestries are still there etc etc. It is a mystery to me why everyone is running to this castle again years later. It has probably now appeared in England on some swap meet for all the Urbex followers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqbLYal-jtJ1abc

THANKU Sam, Jess (& Karl oft also) :) If not for You/Your Channel I wouldn't even know that places like this STILL EXIST today, heck, I wouldn't know they existed really at all because I am not a "cultured" literary being, the times I do pick up a Novel, it's "True Crime" of today's period & recent past, so ThankU for exposing me to something completely outside of my World, chances are almost 0 that I will ever travel outside of my home Country of Canada so your virtual tours & explores are really appreciated for when I am in the mood to see something VERY different from my World. I see this Grand Palace and am left to wonder to myself "have we really come that far ahead in the last 300 yrs?" as it certainly doesn't appear that these Folks were experiencing any "hardships" or going without any of Life's comforts (I await the tour to see IF they managed indoor running water? Perhaps not flush toilets, but as long as there's a shower ability, I call myself happy & am not left feeling like I'm going without anything. Oh, just want to mention, that this THEATRE would be FAR preferable to me than any of today's Movie Theatres or Imax's, that's for sure, LIVE THEATRE!!; a treasure EVERYONE can enjoy when given the opportunity! THANKU THANKU
